I guess the Deutschlandhalle in Berlin was already booked for August 28th???

Comment by lorelynn | 2008-07-08 11:22:09

The night the Enabling Act was passed - the bill that legalized Hitler assuming full dictatorial powers - the Storm Troopers surrounded the Reichstag. The legislators had to pass through a huge gang of Nazi thugs to get inside. As they debated the bill inside, the could hear the chants from outside through the walls: “Full powers or else! We want the bill or fire and murder!” In the end only the Social Democrats voted against the bill and thus Hitler was born.

The point to this little violation of Godwin’s law is that Obama’s move to the stadium gives him reason to have an extra 25,000 of *his* supporters, specifically, at the convention. The stadium seats 75k. There will be 50,000 people attending the convention - delegates, politicians, and press. So, that leaves an extra 25k seats available, and of course, who is going to travel to Denver to see that spectacle but the most hardcore of fans?

What will those Obama fans do if the balloting does not go their way? After the primary we’ve seen, does anyone really believe those supporters are just gonna say “aw, shucks, I really wanted him to win” and go home?

To my mind, this move is about creating the most threatening atmosphere possible for any super-delegates who might change their mind. Think about the threats in the primary - Jesse Jackson Jr. astonishly went on tv and threatened elected officials with primary challenges and, even more astonishingly, Obama was never asked about it nor distanced himself from it. Tavis Smiley’s elderly mother was tracked down and threatened. So was civil rights here John Lewis and Philadelphia’s Mayor Nutter. Bloggers such as Taylor Marsh have received death threats. Even esteemed and non-partisan bloggers such as Digby have had to shut down comments after a pro-Clinton or anti-Obama because of the obscene anger that filled the comments, Clinton caucus attendeess were locked out, screamed at and spat upon. And Obama has never said a word about the bad behavior. Oh, he’ll apologize to McCain for Air America show host Ed Schultz calling McCain a “war monger”, but not a work when Air American host Randi Rhodes called Clinton a “fucking whore” over and over and over again as a crowd of Obama supporters attending an event organized by Obama supporters and advertised on Obama’s site laughed uproariously.

None of that is a coincidence, folks. And now a guy who has run a campaign that has split the party in two, and won by rigging caucuses adn threatening super delegates, has found a way to have 25,000 of his supporters on the ground in Denver. There are only private rooms left which are outrageously priced. So they’ll be on the streets. The DNC, knowing how fractured the party is, should never have allowed this.

I don’t think this is going anywhere good.

Comment by chris | 2008-07-08 14:43:24

Who the hell is paying for this? I thought the DNC was having problems with finances. It’s got to be incredibly expensive to have 2 places for their coronation festivities. Man I hope someone is looking behind the scenes at the monetary side of all this. Where’s a good forensic accountent when you need one. The Repubs had better get on the train here and start blasting OB and gang for all this stuff. I almost can’t believe all the garbage that has come out about him that is not being acted upon by the people running against him. It just doesn’t make sense. The longer they wait the more time OBIE and his minions have to counter attack any objections. C’mon Repubs, even Rushbo is calling you out for not jumping on this stuff.

Comment by lorelynn | 2008-07-08 14:52:47

The expense be damned. How else is going to make sure that the SDs vote as planned? As long as he wins, it’ll get paid for. But if doesn’t have another level of threat, then he will have burned through his resources for hammering down the nomination.

When the nomination for the presidency is about to slip thorugh your hands, the money to hold onto it is probably secondary.

This is more outrageous than people seem to realize.. The threat of riots - which I’ve always thought was low - has just increased exponentially.

Comment by clairtx | 2008-07-09 14:29:31

The Republicans are holding all the big ammunition until Obama is crowned, then they will come after him with the big guns.

What will Obama do when he has to give a speech in the Oval Office with no one around except the camera crew? Will he be able to do it without thousands of adoring fans screaming at him? I doubt it.

He is not the nominee yet.

Comment by PGraber | 2008-07-08 09:52:09

They are just renting the stadium to “scare” the super delegates into voting for BHO. The Super Delegates would rather ruin our country by voting for BHO than causing an uproar with his crowd by voting for Hillary Clinton, who would save our country. Dean and BHO are going to fill the stadium with BHO supporters and that way the SD’s will vote for him to the BHO supports won’t lie, cheat, steal, and riot like they did during the caucuses.

If he was really smart he would have schedule his acceptance speach on the steps of the whitehouse on Pennsylvania Avenue.

THe backdrop of the whitehouse as he accepted the nomination he stole would cement the image in americans minds that the Obama presidency is a faite accompli, and there would be a massive call for McCain to drop out and BUsh to resign immeadiately.

Just think of the money we could by not having to have an election in november. Just think Obama could start being president in August, 5 months ahead of time…which would mean we could all get a 5 month headstart on getting everyone to the promised land of Hopiumerica.

Comment by TimNCGuy | 2008-07-08 14:41:54

that’s not how this usually works. the “coronation” takes place at the convention and is attended by the convention goers. they don’t have “additional” invitees who aren’t convention goers who they need to make room for. But, in this case that is exactly what “team Obama” has done. Decided to hold the coronation OUTSIDE the convention hall so that they could invite 75000 additional people to attend the momentous occaision.

“If you make a donation of $5 or more between now and midnight on July 31st, you could be one of 10 supporters chosen to fly to Denver and spend two days and nights at the convention, meet Barack backstage, and watch his acceptance speech in person. Each of the 10 supporters who are selected will be able to bring one guest to join them,” Plouffe says.
Now this statement gives you the impression that the ticket will be chosen randomly, by making a donation.

Obama spokesman Nick Kimball says the campaign isn’t conducting a drawing. Instead, the campaign will consider individual stories and other factors in selecting a group to meet Obama.
https://donate.barackobama.com/page/contribute/openconvention6?source=20080707_DNC_email
Here is the request for the donations and nowhere does it say, oh by the way, please include your “individual stories & other factors” as this is how you will be chosen. But look at this site quickly, because as you know, it will be wiped clean, reworded and thrown under the bus with everything else.

Perhaps it would be wise to investigate the corporate interests that will be funding this rock
star extravaganza and what they will demand from Obama in return.

When our country faces so many perils here at home including a failing economy, and our military are still risking and losing their lives in an unnecessary war…..isn’t it “flippant” to stage a rock concert for the nominee?

You know like flipping the finger to not only Hillary, but to all of us citizens?

No amount of chattering by mindless Obama supporters will save Obama and he certainly cannot save himself now. He is burying himself as well he should. The Democratic party and leadership are utterly and shamelessly embarassing themselves.

As for Super Delegates, SHAME ON THEM FOR NOT HAVING THE GUTS TO STAND UP FOR WHAT IS RIGHT. That my friends is part of what is wrong with people in this country. Let’s not piss anyone off, make anyone mad or do anything that makes them think we might be racist or prejudiced even at the risk of LOSING OUR COUNTRY AND OUR OWN SOULS. It warrants a mention because the job of president is nothing more than a servant to the people. Its not about showmanship, and ego building. The main concern should be the need of the people of this nation, fixing the problems to make life better for all, not for yourself and your family first and foremost.

I see not purpose for a bigger crowd, so what 21,000 is not good enough to see him nominated, is this event not broadcast by the media so what is the purpose of having 75,000 against 21,000.

All this is just for one dam thing, to let Obama get his jollies off and feed his big ego, so the world can see the first AA nominee, nothing more its an ego trip for Obama because he must of felt he would of never gotten this far so now its time to go for the bang and forget about the bucks it will cost, who cares once the world take notice that Obama has arrived.

The DNC is trying to get the people of Colorado to fill up the stadium for them. I found this at the DNC web site:

This is the type of Convention people will want to experience together with family, friends and neighbors, and we hope this move enables thousands of Americans to come together, experience history and put Senator Obama on the path to victory in November,” Daughtry added.

Could we make a grab for most of the tickets? Some are saying this is a way to intimidate the Super delegates. That knowing that there is a stadium full of potentially mean Obama supporters will make them less likely to bolt to Hillary.

We aught to be able to check them on this move.

Last night on Countdown…Rachel Maddow was sitting in for Olbermann. Normally, I can’t watch, but was flip flopping to the channel.

So when they got to the Convention story she went on about Obama having no probelms filling a stadium. They then cut to the Oregon free concert in the park scene and added 10,000 people from the last count.

‘Here he is drawing 80,000 supporters.’

Never a mention about the draw a popular local band….that often opens their concerts with the Soviet’s anthem…..might have on those numbers.

And isn’t that the place he set the portapotty on a memorial for the police? Who needs to be told not to do such a thing to a memorial?

Anyway, free concerts is definitely Obama’s thing…I also wonder who would be opening act.

Comment by gluv | 2008-07-08 12:17:49

how come you can’t call this “popular band” by name? 2nd, most rallies have show openings and 3rd and most importantly, that band only had 10,000 to 12,000 people standing…the rest came afterwards…and even if it was TRUE that the 75,000 to 80,000 stopped by to see this “band” that hardly noone seen on the pop scene or billboard charts..they was still there to watch obama afterwards instead of leaving…

One of the reasons that this is being done is that it will limit the ability of the Clinton supporters to mount an effective dissent. In a closed setting like the convention center, the supporters are divided about 50/50, and those who don’t support Obama would have their voices magnified. Partly, this is due to acoustics. The voices will, quite literally, be magnified, and make the opposition seem greater. By moving it to Invesco field, they can stack the crowd with loyalists. It also wouldn’t surprise me if they had a rock band as a warm up act to draw the crowdsin like they did in Portland.

Obama is already annoouncing his acceptance speech and it’s venue. The media, his supporters, and the Democratic leadership say it’s a done deal.

Why bother with delegates or a convention at all? The party could save money by having another closed door meeting and declaring Obama the nominee.

Then The Powers That Be, (Dem leadership, Media, Obama supporters, Uber Rich Donors), could simply announce to the public that Obama has won the Presidency. Said Powers could tell us not to worry our little heads about that pesky voting thing.

Obama then will be worshiped world-wide - or else.

With Obama you will still need faith.

That man has sold out everyone who doesn’t have deep pockets.

Obama is only looking to increase his prosperity.

Maybe you can join one of those hate based churches and get a piece of the faith based pie.

Of course, you will be standing in line behind the likes of Wright and his 10 million dollar house.

Or the professional shake down artist, Jesse ’smeared MLKs blood on himself to gain status’ Jackson.
