Sunday Night GO SCHWEITZER! Open Thread

schweitzer_250x.jpgLet the Governors’ Rebellion Begin! Montana governor Brian Schweitzer — who, by the way, speaks fluent Arabic from his years in Saudi Arabia as an irrigation developer (bio) — “declared independence Friday from federal identification rules ["Real ID"] and called on governors of 17 other states to join him in forcing a showdown with the federal government which says it will not accept the driver’s licenses of rebel states’ citizens starting May 11.” (More below the fold.)

On the lighter side, the New Yorker’s Hendrick Hertzberg links to campaign limericks that Andrew Sullivan’s readers have been contributing to his blog at The Atlantic:

There once was a mayor called Rudy
Who went to Long Island for booty
The taxpayers paid
So that he could get laid
Did 9/11 come before Judy?

More on the Real I.D. story:

States have until May 11 to request extensions to the Real ID rules that were released last Friday. They require states to make all current identification holders under the age of 50 to apply again with certified birth and marriage certificates. The rules also standardize license formats, require states to interlink their DMV databases and require DMV employee to undergo background checks. [...]

Last year Montana passed a law saying it would not comply, citing privacy, states’ rights and fiscal issues.

In his letter (.pdf) to other governors, Schweitzer makes clear he’s not going to ask for an extension.

“Today, I am asking you to join with me in resisting the DHS coercion to comply with the provisions of REAL ID,” Schweitzer wrote. “If we stand together either DHS will blink or Congress will have to act to avoid havoc at our nation’s airports and federal courthouses.” [...]

[DHS spokesperson Laura] Keehner says DHS’s policy won’t change even if Georgia — one of the 17 states that has signaled strong opposition to the rules — declines to apply for an extension.

If that scenario came to pass, every Georgian who flies out through the nation’s busiest airport — Atlanta-Hartsfield International — would have to be patted down by Homeland Security agents and have his carry-on bag hand-screened, likely resulting in massive delays.

Keehner also suggests that patted-down citizens will turn their wrath not on the feds but on their state government.

For his part, Schweitzer wants Congress to step up and pass alternative legislation that would stop Real ID and re-instate a commission that was working on driver’s license rules before the REAL ID Act was slipped into must-pass defense legislation in 2005. That legislation assigned DHS the task of setting the rules single-handedly. … Read all at Wired.

What else is going on?

“…could not use a driver’s license to enter a federal courthouse.” This is unconstitutional and dead on arrival.

Seems like a Governor Schweitzer is a “person of interest” at DHS. I heard him interviewed and he is a unique individual. Can you blame him?

Susan: “rebel states” is an interesting choice of words.

My favorite Quote of the week:

Others said they voted for Huckabee.
“I like the fact he’s a Christian,” said voter Stacee Groome. (? A Scoopy-DO HUUH?)

Rebellion or ….As if rebels are those uncouth people that want independence from the union.

This will be another tatered thread in a Quilt that is the “United States”.As the Feds seek to mandate centralized government with a baseball bat there is a limit. California on EPA, Montana and others on Real ID, No Children,No cry. etc…

No, I think Judy came before 9/11. So glad Rudy Giuliani is way down in the polls. Although the other GOP alternatives aren’t so great either. Huckabee??? Romney??? McCain???

Is anyone else experiencing very s-l-o-w blog loading? I cleared my cache, rebooted my modem and restarted my computer. But it hasn’t made a difference. So maybe it’s NQ?

Comment by TeakWoodKite | 2008-01-20 23:20:26

It seems intermitant. The right side of the page has been slow to refresh at times.

Comment by Leslie | 2008-01-20 23:26:31

Firefox is loading NQ much faster than Safari. But writing comments in Firefox takes forever, which is why I usually use Safari. Can’t win!

I Am using IE. Seems ok now. I was posting early and my browser “blew up” midday and displayed some MySql errors. I forwarded them to SusanUnPC.

I’m in IE as well. Haven’t been able to get the right-hand side of the page all day.

Okay, that’s really weird. Just as I wrote that the right hand side came on.

If you stick around long enough, the right side eventually loads. ;)

The requirement that every state has DHS required software running in 2008 is a joke. NO state will have it: they will ask for extensions or refuse.
Some say the design has serious flaws.
Not mentioned in the blog.wired.com story is digital photos. They will be shopped around in other countries before approved and issued. How many problems will develop from this? Anything like the ‘No Fly’ list?
Lots of these ideas have been around for awhile. They will be expensive and a BIG hassle to implement. Those who wish to intimidate will undoubtedly try their best to scare us into obeying the DHS authorities.
Poindexter got fired, but the program goes on…

At the risk of being very boring, only one candidate has spoken out against Real ID. Your papers please, has such a comforting ring to it, so American.

Step right up…Step right up and get your stinking badges right here!!

Defying Congress, the Department of Homeland Security is pushing to tighten identification requirements at U.S. land borders starting Jan. 31,

“It’s time to grow up and recognize that if we’re serious about this threat, we’ve got to take reasonable, measured, but nevertheless determined steps to getting better security,” he told the Associated Press.

Hi all! A company that can architect correctly will (at some indefinite point of time) be able to unleash defiantly. We will unleash paris the term “cross-platform”. Do you have a plan to become leading-edge? It comes off as disorienting, but it’s accurate!
Bye
