This is Ignore-The-Blacks “Shrub” Behavior, Barack

You’ll recall how, for years, President Bush has “shined on” invitations to speak at the annual NAACP convention, only this last year finally addressing the hugely influential, historic national organization. Now Barack Obama is “shining on” the national “State of the Black Union” founded by Tavis Smiley, and being carried LIVE on C-Span today. It is not insignificant that Smiley chose New Orleans for his annual gathering.

Who is the ONLY candidate — Republican or Democrat — who accepted Smiley’s invitation? Hillary Rodham Clinton, who speaks live to the group in a few hours, reports CNN. (I’ll keep tabs and will update this post to let you know when she’s about to speak. BUT, I’m listening now, and it’s truly fascinating — they just introduced major Hollywood director Jonathan Demme.) Barack Obama? CNN reports that Obama declined and offered to send Michelle, but Smiley told him that sending a surrogate is not enough and turned him down. Obama said he’s too busy campaigning in Texas and Ohio to bother with the national convention on black issues. That “bamboozler.”

CNN International sums up the controversy in “Obama takes heat for skipping State of the Black Union“:

STORY HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Sen. Hillary Clinton is the only major presidential candidate to accept invitation
  • Sen. Barack Obama told organizers he needed to focus on his campaign
  • Talk show host Tavis Smiley: It’s a missed opportunity on Obama’s part
  • Smiley tells Washington Post he’s gotten angry e-mails, threats for criticizing Obama

By the way, Tavis Smiley has been subjected to extraordinary attacks and pressure for daring to support Sen. Hillary Clinton. I read about it at MyDD, and am glad that CNN repeated the story today.

Now, this is not an all-pro Hillary event. Michael Dyson is now speaking. He is, best I recall, an avid Obama supporter. [UPDATE: Now Jesse Jackson is speaking, and he is a Obama supporter (somewhat "tepid," though I've read), and his son is a national co-chair of Obama's campaign -- although Jesse Sr.'s wife is an avid Hillary supporter, and did a commercial for Hillary.] Smiley has no intention of making this about one candidate. He invited ALL of the candidates. Huckabee too. More from CNN International:

“I think it’s a missed opportunity on Mr. Obama’s part,” Smiley told CNN. “Now, I am not interested in demonizing him for his choice, but I do disagree with it.”

But Smiley’s criticism has also prompted many people to come to Obama’s defense. The talk show host told The Washington Post he has been inundated with angry e-mails and even death threats.

“I have family in Indianapolis. They are harassing my momma, harassing my brother. It’s getting to be crazy,” Smiley told the newspaper.

Think about that: Crazed Obama supporters searched nationwide for the phone numbers of Smiley’s elderly mother and his brother, and called them with harassing threats.

(It’s hardly a surprise to me, and everyone else who’s dared to criticize Obama. The hate mail, the nasty and sexist attacks in comments. They’re unbelievably and cruelly immature. This is MOB POLITICS. And it’s rank with bamboozling.)

It’s important to note, again, that Smiley selected New Orleans to give the struggling city support:

He will be busy despite Obama’s absence. Some of the nation’s top black activists and politicians attend the State of the Black Union.

Smiley said he picked New Orleans as the 2008 host city to highlight the continued plight of its residents in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

“We owe it to them, those who survived, those who are still struggling to rebuild their lives,” Smiley said. “We owe it to them to raise these issues louder than ever.”

Again, it’s on C-Span.org and on your TV’s C-Span channel. Stay tuned for Hillary!

Not to worry, the media will paint this group as a “fringe organization” and Hillary as a “desperate” candidate “foolishly” wasting time appearing before it.

The Evil Hillary can do no right, and Saint Barack can do no wrong- until he wins the nomination, of course.

Now Barack Obama is “shining on” the national “State of the Black Union”

He’s busy winning an election. Nice try. The Clinton camp tried to turn him into the angry black Muslim candidate. Didn’t work.

Now you try to turn him into Clarence Thomas who ignores his people. It won’t work either.

Comment by John | 2008-02-23 10:01:13

I guess I missed it when the “Clinton camp tried to turn (Obama) into the angry black Muslim candidate.” Evidence, please.

Ah, the fine art of Making Shit Up. Why don’t you explain to us why Obama is snubbing this group instead of twisting logic into a pretzel to turn this into an attack on Hillary? Don’t they teach that skill in Troll School?

Comment by Cee | 2008-02-23 11:18:15

John,

Keep reading the comments of Mike Howell. He’s one of the people who claims to support Hillary.

Also a campaign staff member sent out the following. The staff member was fired but the damage was done.

It’s one of a couple Obama-Muslim-smear emails circulating widely, and one of the ones Jonathan Martin and I wrote about in October. It’s probably the most vicious of them: It states the underlying hint — that Obama is some sort of Muslim Manchurian candidate — explicitly.

Let us all remain alert concerning Obama’s expected presidential candidacy.

The Muslims have said they plan on destroying the U.S. from the inside out, what better way to start than at the highest level - through the President of the United States , one of their own!!!!

The email was sent by someone identified only as “Judy” whose email address begins jcheroke. The Clinton campaign has said they are now asking a volunteer county coordinator to leave the campaign when the email came to light.

But the email thread indicates that along with Hart, a Clinton staffer named Ryan Callanan received the email back on November 21. Filings confirm that Callanan is a staffer, though I wasn’t able immediately to confirm his role on the Clinton campaign, and he didn’t respond to an email.

Comment by Cee | 2008-02-23 11:20:42

Let me add this

December 10, 2007
Third Clinton Volunteer Knew Of Smear E-Mail
A third volunteer for Hillary Clinton’s campaign was aware of a propaganda e-mail alleging that Barack Obama is a Muslim who plans on “destroying the U.S. from the inside out.”

“Let us all remain alert concerning Obama’s expected presidential Candidacy,” the email reads. “Please forward to everyone you know. The Muslims have said they Plan on destroying the U.S. from the inside out, what better way to start than at The highest level.”

Two Clinton volunteers, Linda Olson and Judy Rose, have already been asked to resign from the campaign for their roles in forwarding the e-mail. The AP reported yesterday that Olson, a volunteer coordinator in Iowa County, sent a version of the e-mail to 11 people, including Ben Young, a regional field director for Chris Dodd’s campaign. Young passed it on to the AP.

Rose, a Jones County coordinator, was forced out last week after the campaign learned that she’d forwarded a similar e-mail.

Comment by Ann | 2008-02-23 12:38:46

The difference between the two candidates is that Hillary tries to keep her supporters from going “off the rails” and if she finds they are engaged in false, threatening or abusive behavior she tells them that’s not her campaign.

The reason so many Hillary supporters are anti-Barack is because he allows his supporters to run rough-shod over anyone who isn’t for their candidate. The candidate talks hope and unity while his supporters knee-cap Hillary voters. It’s the most offensive thing I’ve ever seen. They say the actions of one’s supporters reflect the candidate…that’s why there are many dems who will not ever vote for Obama. They feel personally hurt and attacked by his supporters.

I mean really, harassing Tavis Smiley’s family? Good lord.

Comment by Kahli | 2008-02-23 17:06:08

Neither Obama nor Clinton was my first, second or third choice. When Super Tuesday came and I had to make a choice, I went with Hillary in large part because of the absolute hatred being spewed by so many Obama supporters and by their willingness to tolerate misogyny if it advanced their candidates cause. What a sorry situation.

Hear Ye, Hear Ye! All those who wish an audience with annointed frontrunner Barack Obama come forward and submit your petitions for His Majesty’s perusal!

John,

They can read about his views without him having to take a break from his campaign.
If they don’t learn anything because he doesn’t show up, Chris Rock is right.

Rock said “If you want to keep information away from black folks, put it in a book.”

Let me add newspaper or Obama website.

Comment by kenoshaMarge | 2008-02-23 12:38:00

Kinda funny logic here don’t you think suggesting that black people can’t or don’t read is okay, because it was a black man basically insulting other black people; yet when Joe Biden said Obama was “articulate”, something usually considered a compliment,it was a racial slur.

Again out of curiosity why do you spend so much time on a blog that supports Hillary Clinton and pretty much loathes Obama? Like to do your ugly little gloating like you did about the Feingold vote? What is it with you anyway?

Comment by Cee | 2008-02-23 13:09:43

Marge,

I didn’t criticize Joe Biden for that comment. Take it up with someone who is thin skinned.

I’ve been coming here long before you parked your butt here and I’m going to keep coming until Larry and Susan (hopefully Leslie) get back to what they did best in the past.

Comment by kenoshaMarge | 2008-02-24 09:11:32

Didn’t suggest you leave just wondered why when you are so unhappy with the blog you keep coming? I was just curious.

And since it’s a blog that pretty much agrees with what I believe I think I’ll continue to “park my butt” here. Didn’t know that I had to have been a long time resident to ask a question. Do long time residents have special privileges of which I am unaware? Are new commenters unwelcome? Are newbies supposed to sit quietly while “older, long term posters” pontificate? Someone please tell me the rules so I can “park my butt” where it belongs. Or is Cee not in charge? Again, just a question.

Sorry if my simple question ruffled your feathers and lead to a snotty response that failed to answer a simple question.

It’s a question I’ve asked numerous times on numberous blogs and have yet to get an honest answer.

Comment by SusanUnPC | 2008-02-23 10:45:48

You tell me. You go do the research. Since your only response to all the evidence mounting against Obama is to attack the messenger. You find the evidence that the organization isn’t worth anything.

Far as I know, Smiley is building this new group. If it’s good enough for Jesse Jackson, Michael Dyson, Jonathan Demme, and Hillary Clinton (and a large number of others on the stage I haven’t heard introduced yet) to attend — and it’s helping the economy of New Orleans — and C-Span is broadcasting it LIVE nationwide (so all blacks in the nation can watch it) — it must have just an itty-bitty bit of significance.

Comment by Cee | 2008-02-23 11:50:16

Ouch. For some reason I’m having problems inserting the links for articles.

If the blogosphere is any reflection, however, black America believes Smiley should check his ego. Commenters would much rather see Obama campaigning against Clinton in Texas and Ohio than at Smiley’s confab in Louisiana, a state he’s already won. Critics burned up Internet chat rooms, taking turns at denouncing Smiley. Pundit Melissa Harris-Lacewell, an Obama supporter, authored a biting anti-Smiley opinion on TheRoot.com (which is owned by Washingtonpost.Newsweek Interactive), entitled, “Who Died and Made Him King?”
A fan of Smiley commented on one blog, saying, “Tavis, Ya Killin’ Me, Man.” An angrier writer headlined his comment, “This is just dumb.” “This man is involved in the fight of his life for the presidency of the UNITED STATES, not black states,” he wrote of Obama. “I don’t know if Tavis got the memo, but Hillary is leading in Texas, Ohio and Pennsylvania, where the governor said that his white folks won’t vote for a black.” Other comments would likely be blocked by Net Nanny and can’t be printed on the Web pages of a family newspaper.
——————————————-
Obama’s campaign said he called Smiley twice on his cell and office phones. Smiley said he returned the calls but got no response.

On the Tom Joyner Morning Show recently, Joyner brought up the controversy during an interview with Obama, relating how Smiley was taking heat for saying he thinks Obama doesn’t want to talk about issues black people care about.

Obama chastised Smiley, but spoke as if the two were friends. “I’m going to have to call Tavis up and straighten him out on this,” Obama said. He said he’s addressed issues that Smiley cares about, such as health care and eliminating the legal sentencing disparity that allows judges to send mostly black crack cocaine offenders to prison with sentences that are five times longer than powder cocaine offenders who are mostly white and Latino.

Obama followed up with a letter to Smiley, dated Feb. 13. In it, Obama explained why he declined the invitation, saying that he needed to campaign in states that Clinton must win to in order to topple her candidacy.

Just like Rove did, but that one was taken apart, too.

There is historical precedence for this type of behavior, even Lincoln had to deal with it, narrowly being renominated for his second term.

But if Obama IS guilty, he’s already, um, ineffective. I mean, what about the terrorist ties, it’s not going away…

Why?

Comment by Nellie | 2008-02-23 13:01:38

Cee,

First of all I am going to help - a little.

Most Indonsians ARE Muslims. They are pretty casual about their religion unless there is some kind of crises.

Wahabism comes from Saudi Arabia.

Maya, the half sister Obama is close with, told two different reporters that Obama considered himself to be a Muslim until he was 26 years old. That was when he met Jerimiah Wright from Trinty Church in Chicago and become Christian, but it IS a radical type of church he belongs to.

One reporter is with a magazine associated with the NYT. The other is a British newspaper.

Secondly - I LIKE Tavis Smiley and listen to his radio show weekly. Whether you realize it or not Tavis does a lot for AA’s. AS far as New Orleans goes, other than give one of his infamous speeches in August 2007 in NOLA, the ONLY other thing Obama did was to donate the fee he received from a speech at H & R Block in Chicago - it is listed in his tax returns. That is a tragedy - as Obama sits on the Homeland Security Committee, and people are DYING from living in Formaldehyde trailers, and yet Obama DOES nothing!

Take a deep breath and re-read your comment just above. Sorry - but it is NUTS and hysterical!

For an intelligent woman you are losing it. Do yourself a favor and stop reading PROPAGANDA! Will the right attack his being a Muslim - of course. Even the venerable Juan Williams of NPR said “It is a Problem. We (the US) are at war with radical Muslims.” The ignorant will not know the difference.

Frankly Cee, people I associate with, including myself, do not give a DAMN what someones religion is as long as it does involve human or animal sacrifices. The other thing we ask is that they do not try and RAM it down OUR throats.

You go to great lengths about describing people by the color of their skin - WHY does it matter?

As to educated AA’s - no they are NOT for Obama. Here is a piece decrying Obama’s selfishiness and Narcissism:

http://www.blackagendareport.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=149&Itemid=34

Whopee! A letter - now that is going to help people get their lives back - NOT!

You are going to go through a real hard time emotionally, when you see what a fraud this guy is. Susan just trys to enlighten. There is NO reason to attack her.

As for Obama, giving speechs and/or writing letters; that seems to be his sole sum of DOINGNESS on anything.

If you saw someone hurt - would you wait a few days and write the Fire Department that somone MAY need help!

Where is the logic and common sense?

Lastly Obma has been BUYING off everyone - You might want to ask Kos how much he is getting and what he was promised! Are you also on Obama’s payroll?

This is in response to your question about Obama

Expand drug courts; help prisoners with substance abuse
THE PROBLEM
Disparities Continue to Plague Criminal Justice System: African Americans and Hispanics are more than twice as likely as whites to be searched & arrested when stopped by police. Disparities in drug sentencing laws, like the differential treatment of crack as opposed to powder cocaine, are unfair.
OBAMA’S PLAN
Expand Use of Drug Courts: Obama will give first-time, non-violent offenders a chance to serve their sentence, where appropriate, in the type of drug rehabilitation programs that have proven to work better than a prison term in changing bad behavior.
Reduce Crime Recidivism by Providing Ex-Offender Support: Obama will provide job training, substance abuse and mental health counseling to ex-offenders, so that they are successfully re-integrated into society.
Eliminate Sentencing Disparities:The disparity between sentencing crack and powder-based cocaine is wrong and should be completely eliminated.

Imagine, now, what is going on in Afghanistan, and Turkey, and Iraq.

Do you really think Obama is ready to handle situations of this magnitude?

No, he can’t even evaluate whether or not law enforcement in this country knows his every secret.

I don’t suppose you have been watching it today. It’s much more uplifting and relevant than anything I have heard come out of Obama’s mouth. They are talking about issues that should matter to any one who cares about the poor and poverty in this country whether the person is black or not.

I can’t believe that Obama missed this opportunity. Surely he could have arranged his schedule to show up. I wouldn’t expect McCain to show up because I don’t expect his platform to be caring about the poor and poverty, let alone black. This to me, shows Obama’s opportunistic nature, he is happy to get the African American vote, but he leaves them by the wayside when they are having an event like this. I was absolutely stunned to hear he wasn’t attending.

Every time I think, well maybe I can hold my nose and vote for him if he is the candidate he does something that completely destroys that thought.

a. to win the nomination.
a#2. to win the general election.

i rest my case.

Comment by SusanUnPC | 2008-02-23 11:02:39

Huh? I guess I didn’t make my point: Obama is ALL about winning the election. Governance doesn’t hold much interest for him.

Look up his failure to hold a single hearing as chair of the European Affairs subcommittee of the U.S. Senate’s Foreign Policy committee. Obama hasn’t even bothered to visit a single European country despite holding the position for over two years.

Hell, last time I checked, Obama doesn’t even list the chairmanship on his U.S. Senate Web site. But he sures lists it on his “resume” on his campaign site.

Many Senators have groused about Obama’s failure to learn the Senate rules…. truly shocking … I’m sure that Jim Webb, John Edwards, Hillary Clinton, et al. made that one of their first orders of business when they became senators. They’d be embarrrassed not to know the rules. That’s Senate 101 stuff.

Ugh. He’s into making speeches. Not doing the hard work of the buck-stops-here administrative leadership.

Susan, I’m glad we’re clear. Initially you didn’t make your point. Or, you typed one thing and I heard something different. :-)

Also, this is very key. Major CA university study on internet communicating. Ballpark. Words on only 5% of communicating. Body language and tone of voice are the other 95%. Split about 60-40ish iirc.

I hear you about your other points about B.O.

I also am having bad historical flashbacks lately wrt to woodrow wilson, and jimmy carter. (krugman’s art. was very good.) they were unknown on the nat’l scene and the powers that be (ptb) and the “men behind the curtain” got them into power and the results were bad for the party and the country. (in intensively studying amer. hist. these last 9 years i keep on seeing their handiwork. it’s ugly.) obama is very untested. the ptb wouldn’t be flogging him so hard unless they thought/knew he’ll play ball.

it is my belief that obama is being pushed because the ptb was deathly afraid of edwards (bilderberg approved) and his 2 americas rhetoric. and they looked at hillary and said “what if she doesn’t get the nomination? who’s next in line? (edwards) oh sh*t.”

gotta run for now.

Has it occurred to you there are people in power who are truly appalled at the terrorist fiduciary monkey business going in American politics, in Washington?

Susan wrote a wonderful story the other day about the Crown family, and Obama (Maytag owners who decimated the union).

Turns out THEY’RE connected to all sorts of Palestinian “charities” and the whole Obama Chicago syndicate.

Check out Rezkowatch today, Feb 23, 2008.

Boy, I don’t know who runs that site, but he does a GREAT job.

Just like Susan and Larry, and everyone else who contributes, here at NQ.

He also missed HALF the votes on the Veterans sub-committe he made a big deal of getting a seat on! Too busy working on his campaign I guess.

This election has done nothing to dispel my belief that black voters will go with a black candidate no matter what.

Can you imagine the shit Hillary Rodham Clinton would catch if she just blew it off?

And she won’t gain anything by it. Once again the decent candidate can’t catch a break.

Comment by ces | 2008-02-23 11:01:34

That’s right….he’s already won the ’southern’ states, so why bother now.

Pander ’til you’ve won, and move on.

Sound familiar?

Comment by wethornet | 2008-02-23 11:03:17

re black voters.

one of the things i’ve come to realize is how TRIBAL people are. good, bad or indifferent that, in my view is REALITY.

i used to think that “sweet reason” would prevail. that people would make “rational” decisions.

when i was a stockbroker had a book. quote at top of chapter, the heading was:

feelings are to facts, what 19 is to 1.

something to ponder.

Comment by wethornet | 2008-02-23 11:17:32

clarification. my re black voters was in response to this.

the point about TRIBAL stuff was across the board. black voters are going for obama. white women of hillary’s age are going for her. ceo’s vote republican (who knew? ;-)). joe lieberman had a lot of jewish support against ned lamont.

Comment by kenoshaMarge | 2008-02-23 12:43:55

Joe Lieberman had a LOT of Republican support in order to beat Ned Lamont. And the Democrats that did vote for him have been experiencing buyer’s remorse ever since.

Comment by alexei | 2008-02-23 16:10:30

Do you have the statistics on white women of Hillary’s age and Jewish vote? I don’t believe that it is 80% and above which is pretty much what Obama is getting with the AA vote.

I know many white women Hillary’s age who voted or will vote for Obama. Agree with the poster below, Lieberman received a lot of Republican votes.

How do you explain white males voting for Obama? Are they really just Republicans in open primaries?

Cee is correct. Rangel is trying to survive the next election so he’s decided to criticize Clinton to score points with his constituency. I find it sad that he is turning on her now that it looks like Obama might be the nominee. He wasn’t acting like that when Clinton was the frontrunner. I guess politicians are that way. They do whatever will get them elected in the next election and Rangel took a lot of heat at first for supporting Clinton over the black candidate.

Comment by Cee | 2008-02-23 10:44:00

Wet,

Charlie is trying to survive the next election.

I just looked up something on the Tavis gathering. This is written by Roland Martin from a widely read AA magazine.

February 11, 2008
Why Obama should skip Tavis Smiley’s State of the Black Union
Sen. Barack Obama took a lot of heat last year from participants in Tavis Smiley’s State of the Black Union annual confab, which was held in Virginia. To be fair, he was a little busy that day…announcing HE WAS RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT!

Some of the folks there were besides themselves, and frankly, were childish about it, even saying that he should have put off his presidential announcement to be there.
As an aside, when I asked my radio listeners on WVON in Chicago if Obama should skip the event, we got 29 calls in two hours, and only two said he should go. And this is a crowd that is normally in agreement with Smiley.

All I read there is that Charlie Rangel is right. Hillary Rodham Clinton’s Xerox line wasn’t the greatest.

So what? She still won the debate and the line is sinking in. It simply could have been much better to help her make the point.

Suggestions for a better line please?

Comment by wethornet | 2008-02-23 11:09:50

mike,

what is significant is that rangel is making noises against hillary at all.

there’s a link in the story about his comments about the super delegates.

you say that hillary won the debate. that’s a belief. a judgement call. (no doubt very popular here.)

and no, i’m not interested in providing better lines. (i will say again that the single best thing i’ve seen is the youtube video downblog by one post i believe.)

Part of bringing America together appears to be leaving NOLA behind.

Louisiana has already voted for Obama, who says they need any kind thanks now?

Forget them, it’s part of the Move On strategy. Get their endorsement, support, ad money, vote, then move on to the next ambition.

Maybe God spoke to Barack Hussein Obama -

The Messiah - (or 666 as my assistants refer to him)

and he was once again Divinely inspired -

to do nothing.

“Mob politics” sure is an accurate term. I had to caucus for Hillary and it wasn’t pretty.

As usual if you point out the fact that Obama didn’t show up, people will just attack the State of the Black Union instead. They aren’t “worthy” of his majesty’s attention. They haven’t accomplished enough, they aren’t important enough.

Obama was busy campaigning and couldn’t vote on the waterboarding ban. People tell me that’s okay, it wasn’t an important bill, not like the telecom immunity that Hillary didn’t vote on. Now that was an important one. Banning torture? No big deal.

Comment by Anne | 2008-02-23 12:08:30

Several things struck me about this decision.

One, he won Louisiana by a significant margin, included in which was a huge percentage of black voters; at a minimum, attending the forum would be an acknowledgment and an appreciation of that support.

Two, that it is being carried on C-SPAN means that he could have been reaching out to a nationwide audience.

Three, that we already have a president who is more interested in adoring crowds than in governance, and another would be a disaster.

Four, I’ve been saying for some time now that Obama would end up being a Jimmy Carter president, whose promise of coming together and healing would die a painful death while absolutely nothing meaningful gets done in DC. Obama would be a one-term president, who would drive a loss of Dems in the 2010 mid-terms, and hand the WH off to the GOP in 2012.

Finally, don’t Obama supporters ever get tired of having to justify the actions and words of their candidate? The convoluted logic and rationalizations are laughable - as laughable as any of the justifications given by those who support Bush, for crying out loud.

Comment by kenoshaMarge | 2008-02-23 12:47:44

Agree with a lot of what you said but must hasten to add that while the result would be the same if Obama were a one term president other than that he has neither Jimmy Carter’s integrity, grace, nor class.

Comment by alexei | 2008-02-23 16:11:51

Agree and I would argue, experience. Carter was a governor.

sooooo i don’t think the “down low brother” running for president who’s about to get called out is brave enough to show is face at the State of the Black Union conference.
