Obama: I oppose NAFTA
In interview, candidate clarifies Canadian meeting

By STEPHEN ORAVECZ Tribune Chronicle

Barack Obama said Saturday that one of his top campaign officials spoke with a Canadian consulate general representative about NAFTA, but nothing he said contradicted the candidate’s stand on the North American Free Trade Agreement.

In a telephone interview with the Tribune Chronicle, Obama said, ‘‘I don’t know all the details but my understanding is that my chief economist, Mr. Goolsbee, was invited to speak to somebody in the local office of consulate general of Canada.’’

Austan Goolsbee is the top economic adviser for Obama’s presidential campaign.

‘‘If I’m not mistaken, they had a very cordial conversation and there was at no point any suggestion in any way that I wasn’t as serious as I can be about the need to make changes in NAFTA,’’ Obama said.

How does this jibe with his earlier categorical denials? Answer: It doesn't. Now he's all nonchalant...

Obama is full of it.

If you want to listen to the relevant Q&A from yesterday's Clinton campaign conference call, you can find it here:

Wolfson and others discussed NAFTA-gate, responded to questions, and demanded answers. Interesting.

"Larry, you usually get my respect for your expertise. However, you are out of your element and you are not going to get a pass on this one. Stick to security issues."

This line is getting old, and it is fundamentally anti free speech. You stick to your myopia bud.

This isn't over because CTV stands by their story. I too called them on Friday and asked if there was an update. They were ready to name names.
<blockquote>"The facts of our story are accurate." - Greg McIsaac, Communications Manager, News Information and Current Affairs, CTV</blockquote>

Just because Obama's camp says it didn't happen means nothing, of course they deny. You expect them to admit to lying to all of us? Are you dense!?

And diplomats aren't exactly in the business of saying, "yep, Obama called us, it was so poor of him to do that"
That would amount to interfering with election in the US.

Why don't you write a story about McCain, instead of being lazy and asking others to do it in place of your remarkable genius.

It isn't a matter of "hillary's position being better"
Obama brought it up to attack. He is a liar, manipulator, and a con artist Trojan Horse.
He sings a tune to one person (borrowed), then sings it to the next (borrowed still).

<blockquote>"The story, irrespectively of the accuracy of the final-final version (which is yet to be refined), is completely bogus."</blockquote>

Evidence? OH, yeah, Obama's camp
SEE: Appeal to Authority Fallacy

Care to wager this is legit?...you win, I won't vote in November, I win...well that will be good enough for me.

Note: Obama's spokesman was asked to respond:
"Obama doesn't make promises he doesn't intend to keep"
oh yeah? Like this
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/10/22/AR2006102200220.html

<blockquote>Until yesterday, Obama, one of the brightest stars in the party since he electrified the 2004 Democratic National Convention with his keynote address, had said he planned to serve out the full six years of his Senate term, which would have ruled out a presidential or vice presidential campaign in 2008.</blockquote>

Stop telling people what to say and write, it is rather presumptive of you. I am very glad Larry Johnson and Susan have opened this up. I'd be fucking pissed to have fallen into Karl Rove's Trojan Horse Candidate because nobody would put him through the vetting process.

Re: Austen Goolsbee, even you say:
"and he talked to someone in the Chicago Consulate-General "

wait...is the story bogus or not?
I thought nobody called them, it was bogus...it never happened?
The of course you make it sound like he's a hair above a contributor...
hardly
http://www.economist.com/blogs/democracyinamerica/2008/02/sorry_goolsbee_doesnt_sound_fr.cfm

<blockquote>"Goolsbee, a University of Chicago economics professor, Thursday who would not confirm or deny that he had a conversation with Georges Rioux, the Canadian Consulate General in Chicago."</blockquote>

Won't Confirm or Deny....

Funny, the camp with supposed integrity, ethics and the change in washington got out done by Hillary (I'll fire staffers who call him a Muslim) Clinton:
Not only did they deny any contact with Canada on this, they authorized them to publish whoever the contact was.

Why doesn't Obama's camp do that? Why didn't they respond quickly instead of hanging on so long?
And why when asked about it do we get:
'obama doesn't make promises he doesn't intend to keep'?

Thanks Larry for keeping this alive despite the willful disregard of posters like this.
This thing got legs baby, keep paying attention.

Larry, you usually get my respect for your expertise. However, you are out of your element and you are not going to get a pass on this one. Stick to security issues.

The story, irrespectively of the accuracy of the final-final version (which is yet to be refined), is completely bogus. It started out as "high-level staffer" communicating with the Canadian Embassy. Then the source got cold feet on the story--maybe it was a miscommunication (one has to wonder--by whom?). Then the story gets a jolt from a defibrillator--uhm... it's not senior campaign staff but an academic adviser (we'll call him "senior" nonetheless because it makes us look less stupid) and he talked to someone in the Chicago Consulate-General (not an Embassy--but who really knows the difference!). Basically, it's a cover-up of a false story.

But even assume that Obama's rhetoric on NAFTA is overheated. Is Hillary's position any better? Does anyone really have any illusions whatsoever that NAFTA somehow will be affected by the choice of president? It is an international treaty, after all, and one does not take it lightly. Sure, it's convenient to pound the table while claiming to shed tears for the American workers, but, in the end, nothing will happen. Anyone who votes on what a candidate "believes" about NAFTA is an idiot, because no one one will do anything about it.

But the fact that you keep revisiting the issue with updates, trying to resuscitate the story is not to your credit. Leave it alone. You can support Clinton without resorting to this nonsense. It's worse when something is being made out of the non-denials from both sides that were supposedly involved--the point of non-denial is NOT to feed the monkey. Go back to the McCain kissing up to lobbyists story--much more red meat on that one. Or McCain's kiss up to Hagee. But drop this line--it's unbecoming.

Great points. And yes in the last two weeks I sae Hillary in Dayton, Obama in Columbus, Bill, Chelsea and Michelle Obama in Athens Ohio.

Chelsea is the queen of intellect, poise, and humility. I really wish Bill and HIllary had had more kids. I have never thought about starting a movement but listening to Chelsea had me thinking about it.

The CCCC (Clone Chelsea Clinton Campaign) Damn that young woman is brilliant!

Wonder why the MSM does not cover her question and answer sessions? Probably because she knows what she is talking about in detail.

I never thought I would witness someone beat Bill Clinton in the clear information and intellect arena...his own daughter puts everyone to shame.
