Sunday Scoops: Rezko-gate and Adviser-Gate

OF NOTE: “Clinton is viewed favorably by 75% of Likely Democratic Primary Voters. However, that figure includes just 56% of Obama voters. Obama is viewed favorably by 68% of Likely Democratic Primary Voters, a figure that includes 41% of Clinton supporters.” Rasmussen Reports

TANTALIZING SPECULATION OF THE DAY: “Was There an Obama-Daley Deal on the Presidency?

Okay, now for the “Gates” news:

  • Going to school on presidential politics — As an adviser in Barack Obama’s campaign, U. of C. economics professor Austan Goolsbee finds himself caught in the NAFTA crossfire,” Chicago Tribune, March 9, 2008. Here are a couple tidbits:

“It’s [NAFTA-gate] very frustrating for him, because he says everything that’s being said about what he said is all very false,” said his mother, Jane Goolsbee. “It’s very, very frustrating.” [...]

… Goolsbee lunches regularly with economic conservatives on the U. of C. faculty such as Kevin Murphy and Nobel Prize winner Gary S. Becker. He remains close to MIT’s Poterba, who chaired an economics panel that advised President Bush on his tax-cut strategy. [...]

“He’s a strong free-trade person,” Becker said. “He believes in free trade, as a vast majority of economists do.”

  • Spotlight reveals Obama camp missteps,” Politico.com, March 9, 2008. …

  • From “Spotlight reveals Obama camp missteps“:

… elements of his inner circle are still dangerously new to the maelstrom of presidential politics. [...]

There’s little doubt as to the cause of their unforced errors: the sheer novelty of the spotlight. [...]

[F]ormer State Department spokesman Jamie Rubin called it “amateur hour on making foreign policy.”

“He can’t seem to run a foreign policy team the way it’s supposed to run,” he said.

  • Obama’s inner circle,” columnist Lynn Sweet, Chicago Sun-Times, March 9, 2008. (From David Axelrod to Julianna Smoot.)
  • Run Herd on the Obamans?,” columnist Victor Davis Hanson, The Corner blog, National Review Online, March 9, 2008.

Obama’s campaign needs to take a time out, gather together, and start to get a grip. First, the candidate gets huffy at a press conference, then the unnecessary NAFTA flap, then Michelle is back at it again (America is “just downright mean”),and then his adviser Ms. Power (not content to be sober and judicious despite past attacks on her) gives an unnecessary book promo interview and dubs HIllary a “monster”.

All this has a deer in the headlights look to it, as the mantra “hope” and “change” starts to get old, and we are getting back to to a normal old 19th century campaign of head-to-head invective and back and forth—which Obama has not yet gone through.

Two things are starting to happen and the Obama pros need to get a handle on it asap. One, there is a McGovernish flavor to the campaign of a bunch of freelancing ideologues that are going off message and in sloppy fashion ranting and raving in petulant 60-style. Two, the shelf life of all messiahs is not long if they don’t produce miracles, and Obama has not quite yet knocked Hillary off as expected,. So the above-the-fray, change the world love-ins will have to change a bit. …

  • Obama and the Pet Rock,” columnist Victor Davis Hanson, The Corner blog, National Review Online, March 9, 2008.

BONUS ITEM: “The Sorrow and the Pity Party,” James Wolcott, Vanity Fair, March 9, 2008. Wolcott takes down a Daily Kos diarist — and how — along with other crybabies of his ilk.

The Wolcott piece was outstanding! Good grief is this dismal fella actually a teacher? Would have thought him a heroine in a Victorian noval who was going into a decline after a thwarted love affair.

The thought of this dimwit in a class room is almost enough to get me as disappointed and depressed as he is.

Relax teacherken, in spite of your malaise we are talking about Hillary Clinton here not Cruella DeVille. Go out and have a beer, go bowling, get a grip.

What does the (% of Clinton) and (% of Obama) portion mean?

Obama: 68% (41% of Clinton supporters)
Clinton: 75% (56% of Obama supporters)

Does it mean 41% of Clinton supporters have a favorable opinion of Obama and 56% of Obama supporters have a favorable opinion of Clinton?

Susan, the SNL skit is very fitting in this blog…lol

Such against Obama not wanting to be CEO but a Visionary, that is a failure now too!

The downfalls coming to light against Obama’s words, and campaign now are:

Change is a do nothing President!
Hope is that those he brings in can do their jobs, well that proved differently this week!
Uniter and cross party lines, Republicans will love Obama in the Whitehouse, by doing nothing for a rookie!

Positive campaign and anyone does anything against it on his campaign is gone immediately Well Goolsbee is still there, the person who caused the biggest blunder in politics by causting his candidate his credability!

Judgement well look who he hired and campaigned against!

The person who did the 4 pg memo in SC is still there too.

Blagojevich kills contract he defended

For more than a week, Blagojevich had stoutly defended the state’s more than $30 million contract with Illinois Property Asset Management LLC

http://www.ilcampaign.org/press/news/illinois/2005/2005-5-6BlagoContract.html
Illinois Property Asset Management (IPAM)

A subsidiary of Mesirow, Illinois Property Asset Management (IPAM), was fired by the state after the Illinois Auditor General revealed that the company was given favorable treatment in getting a $25 million “cost savings” contract, then produced questionable results, and to top it off billed taxpayers $31,000 for things like ice tongs, candy, parking at a Chicago Bulls game and a party to celebrate winning the contract.

The deal is being equally divided into two series, each of about $500 million, with serial maturities between 2018 and 2031. JPMorgan is senior book-running manager on the mid-range maturities with Citigroup Global Markets Inc. running the books on the longer maturities. Perkins Coie LLP and Burke, Burns & Pinelli Ltd. are co-bond counsel, while Mesirow Financial Inc. and Scott Balice Strategies are the highway agency’s financial advisers.
