Get Your Daily Rezko Dose Here

Here, from Friday night’s McLaughlin Group on PBS, you’ll hear much speculation on the Rezko trial and Obama (transcript). As a regular viewer, I always pay attention to what John McLaughlin focuses on since he’s pretty sharp. He was alone on the panel the previous Friday in predicting that Hillary would win both Texas and Ohio. He also has done excellent shows recently on the energy and infrastructure crises. (Thanks for the link, C.S.)

The Chicago Tribune has another gavel-to-gavel report on all that transpired today, including Obama’s involvement on a state board. ABC’s The Blotter reports:

As an Illinois lawmaker, Barack Obama was one of eight state officials consulted on appointments to a state board which later became involved in what prosecutors describe as a fraud scheme, the Associated Press reports today.

That information was contained in a June 2003 memo from a national Democratic official introduced this morning as evidence at the trial of Antoin “Tony” Rezko, a Chicago-area developer and political operative facing corruption charges. [...]

The memo does not say how much influence Obama had over the process of picking members for the Illinois Health Facilities Planning Board, AP said.

And it did not indicate Obama was involved in the alleged corruption that later tainted the board.

Conservative bloggers are all over this story after one of them — Ed Morrissey of Hot Air — dug up a story from 2007 that has been overlooked:

Rezko cash three times more what Obama admits: Sun-Times

By Ed Morrissey

When attempting to defuse an embarrassing situation, the best strategies rely on early and full disclosure in the hope that the eventual revelations prove anti-climactic.

And here is a sampling of more posts following Morrissey’s lead, from conservative bloggers:

Rezko cash three times more what Obama admits | SEE ALSO: Hot Air

Barack Obama apparently hasn’t learned this yet, but the Tony Rezko trial may wind up schooling Obama on the principle. The Chicago Sun-Times reports that Rezko and his associates provided three times as much money for Obama.

Obama’s Shady History and Rezko:

Ed Morrissey has been doing a great job over at Hot Air researching and analyzing the Rezko-Obama situation. In his recent post about the scandal, he dug up a story that should’ve received more attention when it came out in June of 2007 …

Imagine if Obama is the nominee. All of those bloggers — and there are many whose posts I haven’t listed here — will be hitting this story constantly. (Along with William Ayers.)

And Rezko Watch has more in its “Follow the Money” section on “Obama’s Alsammarae ‘fairy tale’.”

I wonder what the name of the person was who took this picture, as well as who else was in the room.

As the board was voting on the Mercy proposal, Levine left his seat and whispered in the ear of fellow board member Dr. Imad Almanaseer, who had just passed on the vote. When it became apparent the hospital plan would be rejected, Almanaseer stunned the audience by changing his vote in favor of the Mercy proposal, giving it a one-vote margin of approval. Almanaseer did not seek reappointment to the board after his term expired on July 1.

Rezko owed Co-Schemer F [Hannon] and Co-Schemer F’s wife, Individual Y [Fortunee Massuda], millions of dollars.

Why would Fortunee Massuda vote the way Rezko wanted her to when he owed her Millions of dollars and then get her to donate to Obama’s campaign as well?
$10,500 from Michel Malek,
*$2,000 from Fortunee Massuda,
*$3,000 from Imad Almanaseer,

What were Baraks and Michelles Obama’s interaction with the planning board?

Senate President Emil Jones Jr. also was recorded by Hayden as sponsoring Martin Nesbitt, the president of a parking company, as a candidate for the finance authority. Nesbitt is a close friend and campaign supporter of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama.

The agency involved is the Illinois Finance Authority, which was headed by Rezko business associate Ali Ata. He is now under indictment in a separate criminal case in which Rezko also is charged
Pickering also mentioned that the firm had worked closely with several top legislators, Obama included, in pushing legislation to overhaul the hospital board.

The Wives Club

But the transaction was actually done in their names, in Mrs. Rezko’s name and in Mrs. Obama’s name.

Saw the show and was struck by the fact that this was the first time I heard anyone mention the Senate Gift Ban in relation to the house deal. There was a big to-do when Lisa Murkowski of Alaska got nailed for violating the ban by getting a sweetheart deal on real estate.

It seems to me, however, that people are confusing bribery with the possible gift ban violation by implying that nothing was wrong if Obama did no favors for Rezko in return for getting something of value. If my understanding is correct, that would be the crime of bribery. A violation of the gift ban does not require any favors to be done in return. I am not clear whether this is illegal or just a violation of ethics. Since it looks like Obama got something of more than $200 value when Rezko helped him buy the house, he appears to have violated the gift ban. Even if this was just an ethical violation, it is bad for Obama since his big claim to fame is sponsoring ethics reform bills and being Mr. Clean.
Can anyone clarify the gift ban?

AS an aside, simply because you mentioned Congress, and graft, and Obama, sort of, I thought of this, from Rezkowatch:

UPDATE: A RezkoWatcher has provided some interesting side information related to this article.

According to his official Congressional webpage, “As a senior member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Foreign Operations, Congressman Knollenberg has led the fight to ensure U.S. funding is being used to rebuild northern Iraq.” Knollenberg writes on his website that there are “an estimated 120,000 Chaldeans in southeast Michigan, the largest concentration outside the Middle East,” and he “represents Chaldean families that live in Oakland County [who] have close relatives in Iraq.”

Interestingly, it just so happens that Rezko’s proposed power plant in Iraq was to be built in Chamchamal in Kurdish (northern) Iraq.

I’ll tell you what really irks me about this entire Rezko-Obama situation, and the McLaughlin Group just illustrated it. I know it’s a rather raw analogy, but this episode reminds me of a spouse coming home and finding their partner naked in bed with another person—and then the “caught” couple jumps out of bed and swears, “We weren’t doing anything!!” You can pretty much assume they just had sex, (or were about to), and committed adultery. In this case, let’s just say Obama and Rezko are naked in bed, and we’re the unsuspecting spouse/public. The press and pundits are all saying, “But you can’t PROVE they had intercourse!!! So it’s not really adultery.” In the clip, I heard the panelists give ridiculous excuses, “It was between the lawyers in a trust! Only the wives were involved!!!” Does the press really think we’re that stupid?!! Their comments insult our intelligence. My jaw dropped when Buchannan said, “Obama told the truth, but not the WHOLE truth.” I guess it’s okay if I pay PART of my income taxes, but not the full amount.

And it’s infuriating when the pundits say, “All politicians do it. Nothing happened. There’s no evidence—no proof of exchanged favors.” I know from personal experience, that anytime I need a loan, perfect strangers off the street are always willing to help me without expecting anything in return—not even interest. And when vacation time comes, the travel agent always gives me a free trip just because I have a lovely smile. Oh, and did I tell you I’m from planet Neptune too?!! Yes, and anytime I need money, all I have to do is sprinkle magic fairy dust on marigolds.

Maybe the press could get off their cushiony asses and ask Obama a hard question once in awhile instead of acting like we’re all a bunch of fools!!
