Keith, first let me say, I have thought you wonderful for years. But last night, well, I’m done with you. Had you been honest enough to publicly endorse Obama, then at least I would respect your next words, for they would have been the lies and distortions of an advocate. However, your failure to do so makes you even less than what you criticize, for at least Senators Clinton and Obama admit they are politicians, advocating for their own election. You pretend to be an uninterested observer, and are therefore a hypocrite and a liar, at least by omission.
I need not regurgitate your sham from last night. Your outrage, your “concern” (can you be a “concern troll” on TV?), are well established. So is your hypocrisy.
First, your complaint is not so much with what Geraldine Ferraro said, for everybody agrees that was profoundly stupid and offensive. The Clinton campaign itself said:
Williams reiterated Clinton’s rejection of Ferraro’s comments — “I do not agree with that and you know it’s regrettable that any of our supporters on both sides say things that veer off into the personal,” said the New York Senator — before adding: “We reject these false, personal and politically calculated attacks on the eve of a primary. This campaign should be about the leadership we need for a better future and these attacks serve only to divide the Democratic Party and the American people.”
But that is not the problem. The problem is, you quibble with the word “regrettable,” claiming it insufficient. You also pretend Clinton is the first and only candidate to inject race into the discussion. In that, well, there is no other term, you are a damnable liar:
Are you familiar with the name “Jesse Jackson Jr.”? Of course you are. Do you remember when he said:
…there were tears that melted the Granite State. And those are tears that Mrs. Clinton cried on that day, clearly moved voters. She somehow connected with those voters.
But those tears also have to be analyzed. They have to be looked at very, very carefully in light of Katrina, in light of other things that Mrs. Clinton did not cry for, particularly as we head to South Carolina where 45% of African-Americans who participate in the Democratic contest, and they see real hope in Barack Obama.

He said Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. of Illinois had recently asked him “if it comes down to the last day and you’re the only superdelegate? … Do you want to go down in history as the one to prevent a black from winning the White House?
How did Obama respond? Well, to date, he has YET to respond to the second quote. How did he respond to the first one? Did you explode with outrage, more concerned with protecting the Party than his campaign? Is it a campaign, or a suicide pact? Let’s see, shall we?
It turns out he waited a week, then decided, having gotten what he needed out of it, to declare a “truce,” and at the same time pretend he was innocent:
“I don’t want the campaign at this stage to degenerate into so much tit-for-tat, back-and-forth, that we lose sight of why all of us are doing this,” Mr. Obama told reporters at a news conference here. “We’ve got too much at stake at this time in our history to be engaging in this kind of silliness. I expect that other campaigns feel the same way.”

“If I hear my own supporters engaging in talk that I think is ungenerous or misleading or in some way is unfair, I will speak out forcefully against it,” he said. “I hope the other campaigns take the same approach.”
I guess he just didn’t “hear” Jackson’s statements, eh? Tell me Keith, is that a good defense for Hillary, too? No? Does the word “hypocrite” spring to mind yet?
Hillary apologized from Bill’s comment in South Carolina about Jesse Jackson. Has Obama apologized for Michelle’s comment, her blatant appeal to race?
With polls showing African-Americans have yet to give overwhelming support to White House hopeful Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.), his wife Michelle said “black America will wake up and get it” in an interview running on MSNBC on Monday.
And while we’re at it, which candidate ran an ad saying the other “doesn’t respect our people”? Well, Obama.
Keith, some Hillary supporters have said stupid things. The problem is, so have some Obama supporters, including his wife and his co-chair. Why is it, then, that only the Clinton campaign deserves one of your “Special Comments?

If Olberman, Matthews and the other talking heads had actually been on the streets on the ground in South Carolina for the primary there, they would have head the Obama adds that were playing the race card.
This is a letter I sent to Steve Capus and Phil Griffin at NBC today:
Gentlemen,
I have been a regular viewer of MSNBC and Keith Olberman for some time now. At first, Mr. Olberman exuded keen political insight during his broadcasts wherein he meshed fact and a very sardonic wit in his delivery of the news. Sadly, those days have come to an abrupt and shocking end. Mr. Olberman has begun to take aim at Senator Clinton in the most unfair and under-handed of ways. His recent ‘Special Comment’ was, indeed, ‘very’ special. For it showcased in no uncertain terms that Mr. Olberman has become more partisan and divisive than George W. Bush and Karl Rove could ever hope to be. Don’t misunderstand me. For I appreciate our freedom of speech and opinion. Mr. Olberman is entitled to his editorial comment.
Nonetheless, I - along with the many millions of Senator Clinton’s supporters - expect this: that the same truthful and thoughtful motivations be summoned on behalf of both candidates. The man who was from the outset a virtual town crier fighting to re-direct the misguided media into challenging the Republicans and President Bush has now waffled and imploded into a sea of tar. He seems to no longer care about fair and truthful foundations, but rather insidious and inciting rhetoric. If one is to lead by example, then Mr. Olberman is preaching nothing less than a repugnant venom reminiscent of a religious zealot.
I find his repudiations of Senator Clinton equal in anger and ignorance to the rantings of Bill O’Reilly. Mr. Olberman has become not the Edward R. Murrow of his dreams and ambitions; but, rather, the Rush Limbaugh of the Progressive Democratic Movement. I am a proud Democrat and a proud American. I am not proud of Mr. Olberman. I am not proud of MSNBC for allowing such bile to be so effusively spewed forth from an obviously sexist man. His stature has been immeasurably diminished. I will no longer be watching.

Oh, and I’m looking forward to Keith’s second commentary on Rev. Wright. I’m hoping he viewed the video where the minister moves his hips in a humping fashion while referring to Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky. Yes, I imagine that gesture is quite typical in a lot of congregations—it has such lovely religious overtones. Makes me think of the Virgin Mary. I guess when the Rev is preaching, you just have to be quick about shielding your children’s eyes and ears before he gets to the porn references. Otherwise, you’ll be stuck in the car ride home explaining the birds and the bees to your five-year-old. And that would be a bummer if little Jimmy asked Grandma if he could ride her while she cuts the Sunday roast beef.

To put this in PC terms, it seems that if you read between the lines on the Page Six article that poor Keith Weeniemann may just have a problem with being “Woodificationally Challenged”. Maybe for the good of all we could pitch in together and buy him a healthy supply of a certain little blue “woodification” pill. That should help to get poor Keith’s “spirits up”, so to speak. Clinton Campaign Requests Resignation From Second Iowa Coordinator for Obama ‘Muslim’ E-Mail
This was the case of Judy Rose, a volunteer co-ordinator who forwarded the hoax email, but has since quit the campaign. What has been ignored is WHY DID SHE FORWARD IT?
Well one volunteer who worked with her clearly stated that Judy Rose was concerned about the email, not endorsing it.

Okay–maybe I’m the only ONE in the WORLD. But I think Ferraro was right. Any time 80% of ANY population –across gender, age, income, education & geography are voting as a BLOCK–they’re not voting on POLICY. So, pretty much the only criterion you have left is race. I mean isn’t that pretty clear that that is what the AA population is doing?? As the media (and hopefully the electorate) becomes more critical of Obama–the AA becomes, curiously, less so. As to Olbermann’s rant–what he said (with the exception of Wilson) was not correct–TR and FDR had legislative AND executive experience as governors of a huge, tough state (NY) & TR had military experience, as well. Obama has to be the most underqualified candidate in history. Would people be voting for him with the same skill set as a woman? No way. As a white man? No way.
Lastly, again, I MAY BE THE ONLY ONE IN THE WORLD who thinks this–but I think these ‘knee-jerk’ apologies and self-censoring on the basis of race are ridiculous.
Obviously the McCain’s talk show guy (Cunningham?) was trying to emphasize Obama’s “foreignness” by repeatedly saying his (legal) middle name-Hussein. But why is that off limits?

Accusing half of the Democratic party of being racist scumbags because they prefer one candidate over the other is not going to win anything in November. Did you know that when you call people vile names that they will not participate. Local party organizations are falling apart because of the hostility, aggression, and foul language of some supporters of Senator Obama. Morons like Olberman are only fanning the flames.

New members are great for the party but the new members hate us. This is literally what I am being told by 40 year activists and contributors. But I guess it is all for the good of the party that scumbag, down market, rascist, filth, old white women who donate tens of thousands of dollars are being purged from the pure and holy Democratic party.
I’m a Clinton supporter, and if Obama is the nominee the only struggle I’ll have at the polls is whether to write-in Hillary or Al Gore. I have voted Democratic in every Presidential election I’ve been eligible (since 1984,) but I will NOT vote for this slimeball.
Neither, I suspect, will more than 45% of the voting public.
If Obama is the nominee, say goodbye to Florida and Michigan (they will not forget his attempts to disenfranchise those states, or make them revote because he didn’t like the outcome the first time.) And if any of those states Obama is so proud to have carried- Utah, Nebraska, Kansas, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Idaho, Mississippi, South Carolina- goes to Barack in November, I’ll eat my hat.

I guess that I am already looking beyond this cycle to the next elections, and I have always worked more directly in state and local matters, but this is the most damaging mess that I have ever seen. I have been around since 1971 when as an 18 year old I started by envelope stuffing. It is as if the entire right wing Republican crazies have morphed into Dem loons. I am not convinced that they are Democrats but rather in the movement of the party of Obama. I have told state and local candidates to stay out of it, do not express any kind of opinion or it will bite you. The party has diminished in the last 2 months and I could tear into our “leaders” for not trying to tone it down. It is as if everyones judgement flew out their a**. Geraldine Ferraro said what many people have been thinking and she was ditched for it. Since no one can speak for fear of being jettisoned from the party, people will speak with their vote or non-vote. We are looking at a possible calamity.

I can’t believe I turned my dad on to Olbermann last fall- I told him Olbermann was MUST SEE TV. He was, back then. Now I can’t stand him, and I spend that hour taking a walk, or hitting the YMCA, or something else much more productive. My dad however is hooked- he hates Hillary, and MSNBC lets him indulge in this hate without the guilt that comes from tuning in to Fox.
First of all, thank you for this blog. I thought I was losing my mind with all the Obama worship out there. Second of all, I can no longer stand to look at Keith Olbermann. After years of thinking Keith was the greatest thing on TV he just lost me with this attack piece bile that he had the gall to call a “Special Comment”. It revolted me. You could feel the misogyny coming off it in waves; if not for all women, then at least for one woman. Hate is never an attractive feature, and that was 10 minutes of hate. I felt sort of bad for him, revealing himself to be yet another partisan hack on TV but like you said, refusing to admit it. He’s been pro-Obama for a long time now, and this “Special Comment” was the culmination of weeks of Hillary Hate coming to a head. I think Countdown deserves to be pulled off the air and Olbermann fired and this proves once again how much the Obama campaign “unites us” all. I have never seen such hate in the political process as during this election cycle, and much of it is coming directly from the media. ‘Countdown’ is now firmly and permanently off my “watch” list.
Remember, if anyone on television is called upon to apologize for tossing sleaze at Hillary, its because Bill called and threatened firing, torture, death, etc. It’s never because they tossed slime, it’s always because the Vast Unstoppable Ruthless Clinton Machine forced them to do it.
You know, that same machine that manufactures votes for Hillary. Because of course, no voter would intentionally or willingly vote for Hillary over Saint Barack.
Remember Randi Rhodes after Super Tuesday: “Hillary won California, but remember there were so many Early Votes cast there!” Implication: If only the people of California had been willing to wait to be touched by the light of Saint Barack, they would have voted for the Messiah from Chicago.

The morning Washington Journal interview/call-in show is the most fair tv broadcast I’ve seen in my lifetime.
The upside:
- the hosts don’t take sides
- no ‘Fox’ style swooshing sound effects
- separate phone lines for different groups
The downside:
- little or no adrenaline
So, you might ask, if they’re so great, why haven’t their ratings overtaken the big networks?
While many appreciate getting it straight, un-spun, un-filtered and un-varnished, let’s face it, big audiences are gained by pushing hot buttons. Conflict is the essence of entertainment; and entertainment is what get’s ratings. When there’s a fight in a bar, how many people go home vs stay and watch?
When Olberman gets his next performance review in front of his boss, NBC won’t care about Olberman’s opinions any more than they cared in the past.
A few months ago, Keith was interviewed by Bill Moyers who asked, you’re talking potentially against the interests of G.E. NBC’s owner, how do you get away with this? Keith said the answer was, he was told he’s binging in ratings, keep it up. On the other hand, if ratings drop, then Keith will have a problem.
The downside to CSPAN is the bottom-feeder intelligence of some of the callers:
1. The “Nobody is talking about…” callers, who proceed to bring up a subject or point that has been beaten to death in the media yet has apparently completely missed the caller.
2. The “Don’t people realize..” callers, who proceed to bleat some misinformation they heard on Fox the previous evening.
3. The “Good morning, don’t hang up on me” callers, who know they are about to launch into a typed speech and will try to gobble up a lot of airtime and that the CSPAN host will hit the button if he can.
4. The “Hasn’t anyone else noticed..” callers who think they have some kind of witty, original insight they need to share, and never mind that we’ve heard it a dozen times already, sometimes in the same program (my favorite: “You know that movie ‘Wag the Dog?’…” which was repeated endlessly during the Lewinsky “scandal”, each time by a caller who seemed convinced that they had come up with it first.)
5. The “I’m a veteran, and….” callers, who will mention their vet status no matter what the subject, as if being a vet gives their comments some kind of special legitimacy. As in, “I’m a veteran, and I’m totally against the idea of providing Driver’s Licences to illegal immigrants..” or “As a veteran, I’m totally in favor of abolishing the ‘Death Tax…’” I think this might be a subset of the “Dont hang up on me” category as well.
And of course, the most grating thing about CSPAN is that no matter how asinine, no matter how bigoted or rude or just plain stupid the caller is, the reply of the host is always the same:
“Thank you caller.”

Keith Olbermann compared Hillary Clinton to David Duke. That’s absolutely despicable. Mr. Olbermann, despite acting like a petulant child, is also an adult. And adults who don’t play nice should be prepared to wallow in the same slime that they stir up. Remember the old saying, Buckeroo, “If you can’t stand the heat then stay out of the kitchen”. Olbermann started this. So quit complaining like a spoiled 2 year old if someone else decides to finish it in away that The Oracle of Countdown may not enjoy. Hillary is wrong to suggest that McCain is qualified to be Commander-in-Chief. In addition to implying that Obama by default isn’t not qualified, she has bought into the meme the McCain’s military service is a default qualification for Commander-in-Chief.
McCain’s judgment and record proves that he isn’t fit to be Commander-in-Chief. Hillary has already given him a free pass. If she is the Democratic nominee McCain will slam her with her own experience ad. The meme has been set. Voters will ask themselves the question who do I want to answer the 3am phone call a decorated military veteran or a former first lady… one vote cast for McCain.
Time after time Hillary frames issues as a REPUBLICAN. She blindly accepts the Republican framing of the issue. “Enemy of my Enemy is my Friend,” has obviously run its course with regard to Olbermann. Let’s not forget that, first and foremost, he is a sports writer, not the reincarnation of Murrow.
