Imagine if Wright Were Hillary’s Pastor …

Imagine for a moment Hillary had for two decades embraced a minister and a church that preached racism or hatred for America as Wright has done. Imagine that she had embraced a minister who claims that America “started the AIDS virus . . . We are only able to maintain our level of living by making sure that Third World people live in grinding poverty.”

Imagine that Hillary had Rev. Jeremiah Wright on her “African American Religious Leadership Committee,” as did Obama as of December 4, 2007.

Hillary Clinton not only would not be running for president, she wouldn’t be in the Senate, she probably would not be employable in public life anywhere. The question is after how many such speeches was Mr. Obama’s response to draw the man closer, to elevate him higher?

What if Hillary’s response to Ferraro’s outburst (which was not in the slightest bit racist) was to say, “Aw, shucks, don’t mind her, she’s like a batty old aunt who sometimes says things she shouldn’t?”

Do you think CNN’s Anderson Cooper, as he did last night about Obama’s pastor, would have asked, “I mean, does it matter?”

Or that Gloria Borger would have replied, “I think, honestly, it depends on how much the Clinton [Obama] campaign decides to make of this …”?

Or that Ms. Borger would have offered Clinton this reassurance? “If he feels the need to distance himself even more, I bet he will.” Ahhhh.

No. Jack Cafferty, Wolf Blitzer, Keith Olbermann, Chris Matthews et al. would be hammering the $22,500 donation to Jeremiah Wright’s racist church — more than twice what the Obamas gave to any other charitable group — at the TOP of their newscasts. That is if this were Clinton’s tax form:

Obama’s 2006 Tax Form. It is shown on page 21 of 23 of the pdf file. The amount is $22,500 to Trinity United Church of Christ.

Hillary Clinton knows this. She knows how the media will fixate on the most trivial or the most meaningful parts of her tax returns. She has complied fully, and yearly, with the Senate Ethics Committee’s requirements for financial disclosure, but she has to have trepidation about releasing all to the media in the midst of a highly contested race because she knows what the media will do.

The media are couching all criticisms of Obama’s 20-year association with Rev. Jeremiah Wright, who married him and Michelle and baptized both of their daughters with remarks like Ms. Borger’s — “If he feels the need to distance himself even more, I bet he will.”

The media are not reporting, clearly, that the Obamas give Wright’s church more than they give to any other charitable group.

The media are not — in light of the anti-American views of his minister — re-scrutinizing the infamous photograph of Obama standing next to Bill Richardson — with Obama’s hands at his side, while Richardson’s right hand is over his heart during the playing of the national anthem.

The media are ignoring the now-obvious (to anyone with common sense) ties between Michelle’s negative statements about America and the views held by her pastor, who she’s listened to for decades.

[She won't even commit to supporting the Democratic nominee if it's not her Barack? Astonishing. IMAGINE IF BILL OR CHELSEA CLINTON HAD SAID THIS.]

[The Seattle Times op-ed adds: "And Michelle Obama didn't help with her comment about finally, in her 40s, "being proud of my country for the first time," and suggesting to a young audience in a working-class Ohio town that they should sidestep "corporate America" and instead seek out more rewarding, lower-paying jobs in teaching and social work. Whom did she think she was talking to, the senior class at Vassar?"]

I’ll stick my neck out and ask this:

Do we want a president and First Lady who have been inculcated for 20+ years with the racist propaganda that America is AmeriKKKa, that America had it coming on 9/11, that AIDS was given to black people by white people, and that rich white men run America and therefore America deserves nothing but their contempt and incendiary hatred?

Do we?

UDPATE: See this diary at MyDD.com: “WSJ: Obama and the Minister.” The diarist QUOTES the Wall Street Journal here:

His voice rising, Mr. Wright said, “We supported Zionism shamelessly while ignoring the Palestinians and branding anybody who spoke out against it as being anti-Semitic. . . . We care nothing about human life if the end justifies the means. . . .”

Concluding, Mr. Wright said: “We started the AIDS virus . . . We are only able to maintain our level of living by making sure that Third World people live in grinding poverty. . . .”

I “hope” the media does go after this and a good sign was Morning Joe on MSNBO. They fairly well hammered Obama on this, except Chuck Todd who seems to now treat Obama as the saviour.

I would also hope the Clinton campaign keeps their mouths shut. Let this play by itself.

Comment by Fleaflicker | 2008-03-14 11:24:56

Hillary did the right thing by doing all that apologizing. Now she needs to zip it up and see what happens. I haven’t seen Obama speak about these latest revelations. No excuses and no apologies. It sounds like he is supporting Wright.

I saw Todd this morning and was wondering what planet he is living on. Wright is Obama’s pastor, mentor, and spiritual and campaign advisor. Come on, people. CNN and MSNBC are slow on the uptake of the story and are framing a victim mentality narrative IMHO. They are not showing the “GD America” portion of Wright’s sermon, the Jesus/Obama portion, or the “doing it dirty” comment either. Fox is running this every hour on the hour (no big surprise). Team Clinton isn’t touching this. What amazes me is the utter hypocrisy of it all. Ferraro got flayed repeatedly for her comment. CNN is talking about Ferraro and Hillary again as I’m writing this.

Wright is Obama’s pastor, mentor, and spiritual and campaign advisor

The Daily Show in a segment about Wright ended with a protester holding a sigh that said “FU USA” followed by another that said “john 3:16.”

(TDS was wondering where in the bible it says “FU America,” as Wright seems to imply…)

Maybe that could be put on all the new Obama bumperstickers: “FU USA –Obama’08.”

I agree that Hillary’s camp should just watch this unfold without comment (at least, for now), but this is just the sort of stuff that the media loves to use to stir the pot. They will ignore Hillary’s policy speeches and comments and come at her (and her campaign staff) with endless questions seeking a reaction to Rev. Wright’s statements. The media will not take “NO COMMENT” for an answer, and will twist any such NO COMMENT answer into something intended to foment conflict because, above all, they want controversy and conflict, as controversy and conflict are what juice ratings.

Bill Press had Hillary’s comm director on this morning, and he deflected the questions about Wright by suugesting they be put to Obama. I thought that was a GREAT move - let him hang himself with this one!

I saw that comment by Mr. Copper and wondered why he would asking if it mattered. Those two were having a conversation and not aware of the idiotic babble drippings. Nothing else matters. I was flipin the dial and from what I can tell there was not one radio station that was not playing it. Yes it matters. What fish bowl are they swimming in?

Rich white folks do run America and Hillary prays with them

When Clinton first came to Washington in 1993, one of her first steps was to join a Bible study group. For the next eight years, she regularly met with a Christian “cell” whose members included Susan Baker, wife of Bush consigliere James Baker; Joanne Kemp, wife of conservative icon Jack Kemp; Eileen Bakke, wife of Dennis Bakke, a leader in the anti-union Christian management movement; and Grace Nelson, the wife of Senator Bill Nelson, a conservative Florida Democrat.

Clinton’s prayer group was part of the Fellowship (or “the Family”), a network of sex-segregated cells of political, business, and military leaders dedicated to “spiritual war” on behalf of Christ, many of them recruited at the Fellowship’s only public event, the annual National Prayer Breakfast. (Aside from the breakfast, the group has “made a fetish of being invisible,” former Republican Senator William Armstrong has said.) The Fellowship believes that the elite win power by the will of God, who uses them for his purposes. Its mission is to help the powerful understand their role in God’s plan.

Comment by mimi | 2008-03-14 10:33:53

You’re really reaching pal.

But that was then and this is NOW. Is she still praying with them? How long did she do so? As you said, this was 1993, when she FIRST came to Washington DC as First Lady.

Let’s really talk…

A lot of good her association with this conservative group did for her with the rabid Right Wing.

Like the person says above, I hope Hillary’s camp says nothing. Let this play out among the voters whose opinions really matter. Not the MSM who try to tell us what to think.

If this matters to voters they have a right to be heard. Frankly, Wright is meaningless to me. I support Hillary because she is the superior candidate. And frankly, I’m shocked and quite curious about Obama’s association with this man and this church. Obama seems to have planned out every aspect of his political life with the utmost care and even cunning. There’s more to his allegiance with Wright, underneath there is a bigger story. I’d sure as hell would love to know what it is.

Comment by simon | 2008-03-14 14:40:55

A lot of good her association with this conservative group did for her with the rabid Right Wing.

Conservative church ladies, essentially, who don’t go around screaming “fuck you, America.”

I mean, the guy is running for President…

BTW, what is it opus dei? the catholic version of this religious elitism, is also very prominent in certain Washington circles, I’ve read.

I believe in God, but ALL those people are a bunch of kooks, aren’t they?

I’ve always been taught a real christian keeps his mouth shut, and gives, without fanfare, or force, without ego, without expectation of power, or riches.

But then, I was taught by nuns.

Comment by PMS | 2008-03-14 10:35:41

Ohhhh, that’s so scary, praying with Conservatives…. not.

That actually a GOOD thing by not demonizing people you might be able to work with for the public good on shared concerns.

Of course, if you are simply anti-Christian, then hateful, xenophobic Christianity like Wright’s (and Obama’s?) is OK. Polarization good, commonality bad.

The right side talking radio heads will have no other choice but to go after Obama on this. Obama just lost the GE, even though the right is not “with” McCain, (yet).
People are not blind to the fact that if you are a member of a church for 20 years, like many people in this land, they will know intuitively that OB fully supports his pastor. Uncle my ass. They are always looking for the biggest ant hill to climb.
It is odd how people can Say God DAM America on one hand and then take 22.5k on the other and YES..Isn’t America F’ing Great?
Hey SEN. OBAMA! Are these the words that matter? What a dull Ice pick.

Comment by DisenfranchisedVoter | 2008-03-14 20:14:45

No, I think MCcain just won Hillary’s voters if Obama wins the nomination. Look out for a lot of McCain Democrats. Obama is the best thing that ever happened to the Republican party. And Dean just screwed over himself and the DNC by helping Obama disenfranchise MI and FL. The Republicans just have to sit back and welcome the thousands who will leave the Democratic Party after this election. Trust.

Heywood,

I’m glad someone else is digging this stuff up. McCain has already backed away from trying to use Wright against Obama.

Hillary needs to be careful too…I take that back.
The people here won’t question her association with anyone. For all that praying, it hasn’t stopped her from dealing with the worst people.
Has anyone talked about her relationship with the Tan family?

Hillary Clinton and the sweatshop tycoon of Saipan
By Byron York
Posted: 03/16/06 12:00 AM [ET]
You may remember news reports a few weeks ago about the nationwide reach of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton’s fundraising network.

The nonpartisan website PoliticalMoneyLine reported that her biggest political action committee, Friends of Hillary, has raised more than $20 million since the beginning of 2005.

Some of that money came, as it does in any campaign, from donors who gave less than $200. Such contributions do not have to be reported to the Federal Election Commission, and thus we have no information about them.

But of the more than $13 million that came from individuals whose contributions were reported, $5.63 million came from Mrs. Clinton’s “home” state, New York.
Donors in California gave $1.54 million. Washington, D.C., accounted for $603,360. And donors in Sen. Clinton’s actual “home” state, Illinois, gave $554,088.

The list goes on and on. Florida, Pennsylvania, Michigan — until it gets to something called “MP.”

Do you know what “MP” is? Neither did I.

It stands for Marianas Protectorate, and it refers to the Northern Mariana Islands.

It turns out that Sen. Clinton has some big fans in Saipan. And most of them are in the family of one Willie Tan.

Last year, Tan gave $2,000 to Friends of Hillary. So did Raymond Tan, Siu Lin Tan and Josie Tan, all members of Willie Tan’s family.

FEC records indicate that the $2,000 checks from Willie, Raymond and Siu Lin were all received on Sept. 30, 2005, indicating they were sent together. The check from Josie was received Oct. 2.

Together, the Tan family’s $8,000 contribution to Friends of Hillary was more than the senator’s PAC received, separately, from residents of the entire states of Hawaii, Mississippi, Nebraska, Vermont, Utah, Kansas, Wyoming, Alaska, Idaho, South Dakota, Montana or North Dakota.

In the alternate Universe of “if this were Hillary’s pastor,” we wouldn’t even be having this discussion because Hillary would be a private citizen somewhere, begging Chelsea to make her a grandmother.

Every time I have to put my head around the media’s dogged determination to bypass everything about Obama as they reject the notion that they are being biased, I feel as if I’m stuck in that black & white film with Ingrid Bergman and we’re being Gaslighted by Charles Boyer and the MSM.

Somebody wake me up soon. Surely this is a nightmare!

Comment by Mary Jo Kopechne | 2008-03-14 10:44:04

Gaslighted is a great way to put it–it’s totally crazy-making–Sexism 101. The young, charismatic man can do no wrong but the older, experienced woman can do no right.

What can we do about this? I’m serious–the fact that the media is giving Obama a pass is unfriggin believable. Nothing in the NYT today; nothing on any msm sites. The preferential treatment continues. It’s sickening. It’s maddening. I’m disgusted and furious.

I’m sure the Obamabots feel that as the chosen one, the savior of the world, Obama is being protected.

I’m thinking revolution–at least the internet/msm kind. Any ideas? Really.

What we need is a few campaign commercials that feature Reverend Wright’s rantings. Television spots in Michigan, Florida and PA would be great but cost prohibitive. However, radio spots are pretty cheap. Maybe we need a No Quarter 527.

If you want to bring crap like this up ask Hill about these folks.

Hillary Clinton’s Involvement with a Conservative Christian Fellowship Group
September 4, 2007

The Fellowship’s God-led men have also included General Suharto of Indonesia; Honduran general and death squad organizer Gustavo Alvarez Martinez; a Deutsche Bank official disgraced by financial ties to Hitler; and dictator Siad Barre of Somalia, plus a list of other generals and dictators. Clinton, says Schenck, has become a regular visitor to Coe’s Arlington, Virginia, headquarters, a former convent where Coe provides members of Congress with sex-segregated housing and spiritual guidance.

We contacted all of Clinton’s Fellowship cell mates, but only one agreed to speak—though she stressed that there’s much she’s not “at liberty” to reveal. Grace Nelson used to be the organizer of the Florida Governor’s Prayer Breakfast, which makes her a piety broker in Florida politics—she would decide who could share the head table with Jeb Bush. Clinton’s prayer cell was tight-knit, according to Nelson, who recalled that one of her conservative prayer partners was at first loath to pray for the first lady, but learned to “love Hillary as much as any of us love Hillary.”

Cells like these, Nelson added, exist in “parliaments all over the world,” with all welcome so long as they submit to “the person of Jesus” as the source of their power.

Coe counsels that Fellowship cells shouldn’t engage in direct evangelical activism, but rather allow Christian causes to benefit from the bonds that develop within the cells. Former Nixon counsel Chuck Colson provides a rare illustration of the process in his 1976 Watergate memoir, Born Again. Facing prosecution in 1973, Colson allowed Coe to ensconce him in a Fellowship cell with a Nixon foe, Senator Harold Hughes. Hughes became the Nixon hatchet man’s staunchest defender, voting in favor of a possible pardon for Colson and later supporting Colson as he built Prison Fellowship, now one of the most powerful organizations of the Christian right.

That’s how it works: The Fellowship isn’t out to turn liberals into conservatives; rather, it convinces politicians they can transcend left and right with an ecumenical faith that rises above politics. Only the faith is always evangelical, and the politics always move rightward.

These days, Clinton has graduated from the political wives’ group into what may be Coe’s most elite cell, the weekly Senate Prayer Breakfast. Though weighted Republican, the breakfast—regularly attended by about 40 members—is a bipartisan opportunity for politicians to burnish their reputations, giving Clinton the chance to profess her faith with men such as Brownback as well as the twin terrors of Oklahoma, James Inhofe and Tom Coburn, and, until recently, former Senator George Allen (R-Va.). Democrats in the group include Arkansas Senator Mark Pryor, who told us that the separation of church and state has gone too far; Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) is also a regular.

What can we do about this?

Obama, a man running for President of the United States, has a pastor who who has inadvertently summed up Obama’s entire mission, in regard to his pursuit of the highest office: “fuck you, America.”

If that isn’t ROTFLMAO funny, I don’t know what is. Obama looks like a fool, not even understanding his own motivations, this childish, adolescent attitude of bathos, and persecution, fueling his hate, and confusion, NEVER considering his background associations, and criminality, to be an obstacle TO THE PRESIDENCY OF THE UNITED STATES. That’s crazy, isn’t it?

What kind of bonehead thinks he can get elected, really, having associations, from his church, to the academic, to the political, polluted with the most vile, insane anti Americanism, ever, including Rezko?

I think of the stereotype of the angry black man, and think, well, don’t exploit this, don’t feed this stereotype, but it all goes back to the REZKOS, those Chicago and IL people, ALL of it.

But it’s a small group, I would venture the majority of Americans understand this is isolated.

This is quickly turning into a Tennessee Williams play, isn’t it, with a two dimensional satirical twist?

Or a farce.

Everything you said is absolutely so completely true. I honestly don’t understand why the media isn’t doing their job. If it was Hillary they would be lining up outside her home with torches and pitchforks. hell, they would probably try to burn it down with her mother inside. Hillary being a monster and all.

Comment by Rob Gard | 2008-03-14 12:24:34

I can understand that it will be hard for Hillary and her “surrogates” to let Obama/Wright play out without comment from her campaign, especially when watching the media move at a snail’s pace to cover this. I keep thinking of the analogy of placing a large juicy porterhouse grilled steak out on the patio, sitting my dog a few feet away, and repeating “stay…stay…stay…” At least Jon Stewart was able to play the uncensored “God Damn America” clip last night, and I’m sure that made Obama’s folks furious, because that was some major exposure. Hope the rest of the mainstream media pick up on this because they often look to see what the “fake news” programs of Jon Stewart and Steven Colbert are covering to determine what is an actual bona fide story with “legs”.

mimi - keep napping…I fear your nightmare is not yet over.

I want to start planting an idea for post primary/general election: regardless of who is nominated and who wins, we CANNOT walk away from the problem we are confronting on a daily basis: the fact that women still are not equal and, if the press and corporate white males continue to have their ways, we never will be.

It’s time to re-energize the feminist movement…and I bet this time it includes more types of women than ever before.

Comment by grlpatriot | 2008-03-14 11:44:00

Yes, in addition, I’m sick to death of Hillary being painted as a racist by the MSM and the blogosphere. I feel like I’m witnessing victim mentality and a collective purging of “white guilt” over and over and Hillary has become it’s hitch post. Why does this continue to happen? Why is everything blamed on Hillary? Is this some absurd unresolved Oedipal complex, or a gang violence fantasy. I’m not trying to be dramatic. I really want to know from a psychological stand point what the motivation is. What is driving the mob to attack Hillary they way they do? Why does Hillary have to carry our collective shame?

Comment by Shainzona | 2008-03-14 12:01:30

Good point - I have friends who are ga-ga over BO and I can’t figure out why as they never seemed the type before. Maybe it is their collective guilt for the “sins of our fathers”.

Hey, I’m not happy with what this country has done to many of its citizens (Native Americans, too!) but I don’t think we have to do a collective purge to make things right/better.

Hillary and Bill Clinton were doing what I thought was a wonderful job (he was our first black POTUS according to some AA leaders) and it would have been longer lasting and more meaningful to support that direction than to turn the most important job in our country over to someone who is not qualified.

Comment by Fleaflicker | 2008-03-14 14:41:47

I don’t feel any guilt for the plight of African Americans. I checked a long time ago and no one in my family had slaves. And I have been on the side of civil rights since I was barely 10. I have fought for and stood up for civil rights my entire adult life. So I ain’t getting trapped into this guilt thing. I don’t agree with what happened to African people all those years ago and I think that slavery is abhorrent. But I didn’t do it and considering the activities of my life I refuse to hold any guilt for it.

I agree completely. Don’t get mad, get even. Hillary has courageously walked through this fire, revealing that sexism is alive and well. Join a women’s organization and get involved. Emily’s List is a good place to start. I am going to put my money and effort into this organization, instead of the woefully incompetent DNC. Howard Dean and sadly, Nancy Pelosi, are a disgrace.

Comment by The Gringo's Wife | 2008-03-14 12:35:00

I think that comment about the “Zionist” will ensure Obama does not win Florida.

I watched C-Span this morning. I can’t remember the AA reporter that has me wanting to pull my hair out with tweezers.

On the one hand, she said she could not read Ferraro’s mind to say that she didn’t mean a racist remark. But when asked about the Obama’s preacher’s hate speech she went on a long explanation of what the man was saying. Of course it was just an opinion and it reflected the AA view.

I think she is right. A great many things will come out of this campaign. One of them is to open the eyes of the American people to the homegrown radicals we have right here in our country. As our own history has shown us, we have had more attacks in our country from inside the country than any terrorist.

Whether you think Jeremiah Wright is right or wrong, it simply was ugly, trashy talk about Americans. If it doesn’t matter what color his skin is why should Hillary’s?

And that friends, is very devisive.

And if you don’t think they have an agenda to control the government … you weren’t paying attention to Bush.

This is the most appalling thing I’ve seen in a long time. To think, Pastor Wright said that America deserved 911, and he said it five days after the event, when the dead bodies of American office workers, firemen, and police were still buried in the rubble of the World Trade Center. I am beyond disgust.

The direct connection between the candidate and this pastor is quite clear. Yet I wake up this morning and it’s barely being covered at all.

Well, the Republicans won’t ignore it.

This morning I feel through with the Democratic party. I believe they are trying to force this man on us by this horrible, disenfranchising nomination process.

What a waste of Hillary Clinton’s talent to have to run against this man, who is certainly going to go down in disgrace if he is the nominee. What a loss for the country if she is forced out as the nominee because Howard Dean thinks it’s more important to punish states that to count their votes. It sickens me. This whole thing is disgusting.

Comment by Shainzona | 2008-03-14 11:33:30

Eye on the ball. What Pastor Wright said is not the issue. He is not the candidate and if religious leaders are the issue, we need to be attacking McCain over his hypocrisy on the religious right. Why do you Hill Supporters not see this? I don’t like Hill but if she were the nominee I would vote for her. I don’t want McSame as Bush.

By the way I believe Pastor Wright shares the same lunacy as Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson, who made similar 911 comments, except they blamed gays for the 911. McSame’s new BRF’S blamed Hurricane Katrina on a gay parade in New Orleans (HAGEE and PARSLEY).

This Obama hatred is a little seamy from Democrats. I again call for the Reagan’s (The only thing I liked about him) Thou shalt not speak ill of another Repuglican. New commandment “Thou shalt not speak ill of another Democrat”.

Comment by Fran | 2008-03-14 20:26:34

You don’t understand. Hillary supporters have had to endure the hypocrisy of the Obama campaign for months. Talk of “new politics” and healing, while their actions include race baiting, fear-inducing mailings and radio ads, deliberate distortions and lies about Clinton and her policies, and obfuscation about his own record and actions. This is just the latest, and one of the most indisputable, examples. His actions do not match his words–again. Endorsing and supporting an institution for 20 YEARS that spouts separatism and hostility cannot be erased because it is exposed, and he now says, “I reject these ideas.” If he truly rejected his ideology, he would not have been married there, had his girls christened there, and sought this man’s advise for 2 decades. That anyone would believe this is astonishing. It will be interesting to see what effect this has on middle America. And the MSM reveals itself to be even more pathetic with each episode.

Think of the irony….looking for listening devices while they decide that listening devices are OK to use against us!

What’s wrong with this picture?

Funny, how willing political criminals are to believe in the fairy tale of the “sound proof” room.

Especially if FISA has been invoked against them.

To criticize Jeremiah Wright is tantamount to racism. Hence the crickets. President-to-be McCain’s 527s will have no such problems.

Any Superdelegate who doesn’t understand that point is willing to lose the GE, and maybe even Congress (the “Amerika-Hating, Muslim-Loving, Chicago-Machine” Obama will have negative coat-tails in November).

The Far Left Democrats live under the elitist-illusion that they can “hoodwink” us dumb hicks into giving them their “rightful place” as our leaders. They see in BO a tool as useful as the one the GOP’s Far Right Neo-Cons saw. Whereas the Far Right exploited conservative Christians, the Far left looks to exploit White Guilt (and I admit I’m guilty).

Liberal Elites like Howard Dean (sorry that sounds so tacky) mistake Madison for Wisconsin, San Francisco/Berkeley for California, and Austin for Texas, just as the Neo-Con Elites saw every pew and confessional as a GOP Polling Booth.

No, this a trait more common to the republicans “we hicks” elected, too, like Cheney, and Bush, and Tom DeLay.

Their democratic counterparts aren’t quite as able to pull it all together.

It’s so weird to watch the media give a total pass to a completely inappropriate candidate one more time, as they did with Bush in 2000. All the warning signs were there - the media ignored all of them. I had felt at the time that the blogosphere could wind up pulling this nation’s fat out of the fire, but the blogosphere seems to be afflicted with the same kind of temptations.

The thing I now know is that journalism must be regulated and the problem is that political news panel shows are as cheap to produce as possible.

There are huge dangers to a nation when the people get the majority of their political information from opinion makers. This cat is out of the bag and two blocks away. I don’t see anyway of rectifying the situation. Hopefully, Hillary will squeak through but if not, we’re f*cked for another four years. And even if she does squeak through, how will the Democratic congress treat her. Think about how Reid forced Dodd to filibuster, while granting the GOP a pass on having to stand up. Will a Democratic congress finally decide to get tough once there is a Democratic president? I worry about it.

And all of it leaves me wondering if our nation is serious being about run well. Maybe we’re a nation that prefers having our indulgences to professionally run government.

Comment by Shainzona | 2008-03-14 11:42:56

I agree - amazing the pass that is being given to an inappropriate candidate a second time around.

When this primary started I stupidly thought that Dems wouldn’t fall back into the trap that is set for them in every election. And we (they) did!!

I say “they” because even though I have been a Democrat for 45 years, I will not be after this primary is over. My husband and I are re-registering independent.

Comment by Fran | 2008-03-14 20:31:28

Shainzona: I am already a registered Independent, and my sister is joining me. Write to the DNC and let them know. Howard Dean has done a horrible job, and he needs to know that he is losing members.

Comment by Caronos | 2008-03-14 22:52:55

It’s a calculated pass. if you remember the last election, in the primary the media went after Dean and was in the tank for wonderful, “electable” Kerry. Same thing here, they’re for McCain so they prop his weakest opponent and try to knock off the one who has a chance. Obama would go from saint to devil in a second flat if he got the nom.

Isn’t it racist to refer to an older black man as “uncle?”

Unless, of course, he is the sibling of one of your parents.

Comment by mimi | 2008-03-14 10:41:10

Wasn’t it Obama who described Wright as ‘Uncle?’

Actually, his 911 remarks are pretty awful and totally beyond the pale.

Didn’t Bill Maher get fired for making some comment after 911 about heros flying the planes into the Towers?

My, how soon we all forget. I wonder if he will mention anything tonight about the double standard of him being fired and Rev. Wrong getting a pass? Doubt it - he’s a Hillary Hater, isn’t he?

If you’re unhappy with the FL/MI debacle, write to the DNC and voice your complaint — TODAY at

and

Comment by PMS | 2008-03-14 10:43:01

Done, thank you.

The only easy and fair solution to the delegate problems with Florida and Michigan is to SEAT THEM as they were voted on by the people of their states. The Michigan “undecideds” can be just that… undecided.

The DNC’s attempts to deprive the people of those states (while maintaining a ridiculous Iowa caucus) will be seen by many Democrats as a clear sign that they don’t count.

Comment by alexei | 2008-03-14 12:19:39

The Republicans will eat this up in the General Election. They will (re)paint the Democrats as the party that Hates America, the Blame America First party. If Obama and his supporters think this is no big deal, they are indeed Alice in Wonderland. It is too offensive in so many ways

Comment by Fleaflicker | 2008-03-14 11:45:05

This is one thing I am willing to work across the aisle with republicans and be bi-partisan about. This type of activity should not be acceptable in American politics. I don’t care which political party someone belongs to or what their race is.

I am far from the salute the flag, pledge allegiance to the flag, stand during the National Anthem kinda guy. I am exactly the opposite. For me being patriotic is respecting and standing up for the Constitution. And I do that with vigor. If that isn’t good enough for some… whatever.

But when you start blaming the murder of innocent people on 9/11 on America that is the day I question your patriotism. When you hang out with people that blame 9/11 on America I question your patriotism. And when you give people large sums of money to people that blame 9/11 on America I will question your patriotism.

We need a President that believes in America, not one that blames America.

Comment by grlpatriot | 2008-03-14 12:03:03

Or at the very least a President who has better judgment than to sit for 20 years and listen to a spiritual advisor that preached racist, anti-American propoganda. Obama is about as post-racial as a paper clip.

Heard today that 40% of Americans think it is/was worth being in Iraq. I believe that number is up versus several months ago, so the Repug argument that “it’s been worth it/people who are against the Iraq war are pro-terrorist” may have a larger audience upon which to have impact.

Really good points. I am sick of Preachers, MSM talking heads etc telling folks how they should vote.

The MSMers are supposed to shine the light on issues. Provide us with verifiable information. Been a long long time.

Hello preacher folks why not get folks focused on real pro life issues, real social justice issues? Why not encourage folks to walk the talk of the core beliefs of Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, and Islam. Jesus, Buddha, Mohammad, Mary, Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Mother Theresa were all socialist. Get a grip! Stop telling people who to vote for.

Encourage folks to walk the talk…then they will figure out who to vote for

DNC can kill two birds (sorry, to my PETA friends) with one stone by simplying seating FL and MI delegates based on the election results.

They can affectly make it harder for Obama to win (that will be a good thing) and save face by not “calling” out Obama on the Rev Wright thing.

You know the DNC are such wimps. What a party! UGH!

Comment by izarradar | 2008-03-14 11:04:10

You are so right about the DNC being wimps. They are making all democrats look bad in the eyes of the rest of the country. How difficult is it to hammer out a decision regarding the Florida and Michigan delegates? Put everyone in a room, and nobody leaves until you have an answer.

Comment by Shainzona | 2008-03-14 12:16:51

I absolutley agree - no re-do. Seat the original delegates and move one (oh, wait, I unsubscribed to MoveOn after its boneheaded move of endorsing any candidate - let alone endorsing Obama).

Hillary didn’t break any rules. And non-Hillary voters had choices (even BO in Florida), so SEAT THE ORIGINAL DELEGATES!

What MSM would do If she went to that church;

She will be dead! They will burn her in public.
They will curse that she burn in hell.
They will run the headline every hour, go over it again and again.
They will be riot on the street demanding her head.
And they won’t forget BilL & Chesea’s heads.

The reporters will mob in front of the church, try to interview every single person, the paster, etc. We won’t have peace until Hillary Clinton is eradicated from the surface of the earth.

Well old KO blowhard would have himself a semi-hysterical Super-Special Shame On The Evil Hillary Comment.

Comment by Kat | 2008-03-14 11:04:35

Susan, you are spot on.

Also, Barack Obama was not born Christian. 20 some years ago, he had the opportunity to “sample” several religions, and this is what he chose. You can’t choose your uncle, but you can choose your church.

I also want to point out the fact that America is the most charitable nation in the world. “The voluntary giving of the American people during times of need has been documented in many different studies. These studies show that Americans will give far more towards helping out their fellow man, in times of trouble, than any other private citizenry in the world.”

http://www.america.gov/st/washfile-english/2007/June/200706261522251CJsamohT0.8012354.html

The American private citizens gave 1.78 billion dollars in relief when a terrible tsunami hit Asia. This giving was above and beyond what the United States Government gave in aid. Bringing relief to the suffering is in the very fabric of the American psyche. The Citizens of the US don’t just give lip service to helping they reach out with their pocketbooks and with themselves in volunteerism. The very size of the dollars given dwarfs what any other developed nation could contribute.

Are they part of the AmeriKKKa?

In a few short months after the devastating Asian tsunami a major earthquake hit Pakistan causing great devastation there. The American people stepped up and gave 78 million dollars to aid the suffering there.

Are they part of the AmeriKKKa?

Just like the Obama Campaign, Rev Wright ignores the positive, and goes after the negative. Why preach ‘hate’ when you can preach ‘hope?’ Isn’t ‘Hope’ Barack Obama’s platform?

I am pretty sick of this anti-America ranting anyway.

Comment by Kathleen | 2008-03-14 12:26:22

U.S. Ranks 12th Among Richest Nations for Foreign Aid
By Sonni Efron, Times Staff Writer
WASHINGTON — The United States has significantly increased its foreign aid to poor countries but still ranks 12th
among the 21 richest nations in its overall performance in helping the world’s poor, according to a widely watched
annual report.
Denmark ranks as the most generous country in the world, spending 89 cents per person per day in government aid
and one cent per person per day in private giving, according to the “Ranking the Rich” survey released today by the
Center for Global Development and Foreign Policy magazine.

The United States spent 15 cents per person per day in
government aid to poor nations and 6 cents per person daily in
private giving, the report found.

So is the U.S. ‘’stingy” about helping poor countries?

That accusation by a U.N. official, in veiled form, provoked indignation here. After all, we’re the most generous people on earth aren’t we?

No, alas, we’re not. And the tsunamis illustrate the problem: When grieving victims intrude onto our TV screens, we dig into our pockets and provide the mass
