Donna Brazile is lying about Wright’s moderateness

Donna Brazile said on This Week that Jeremiah Wright is a moderate among black ministers.  He is not.  And Barack Obama has known this the whole time he has known Reverend Wright.  Wright was so radical that he could not get a job at any Baptist Church. (link):

The rebellious son of a Baptist minister, Wright was hired by Trinity United when he could find no Baptist church to take him. The congregation on 95th Street, then numbering just 87, had recently adopted the motto “Unashamedly black and unapologetically Christian.” They did not mind his fiery red Afro and black power agenda.

In his 1993 memoir “Dreams from My Father,” Obama recounts in vivid detail his first meeting with Wright in 1985. The pastor warned the community activist that getting involved with Trinity might turn off other black clergy because of the church’s radical reputation.

The point here is not whether one should be a moderate or not.  That is a wholly separate issue.  The point is that Donna Brazile wants us to believe that Wright is a moderate even though he is not.  Why would she say that?  Perhaps for the same reason she twisted Bill Clinton’s use of the word “fairytale” out of context and accused him of racism. (Video of that here.)

Donna Brazile is not the unbiased observer she pretends to be.  And she needs to be called out on that.

Look at that expression on George Will’s face as she says that.

I haven’t seen the show yet. The Seattle ABC affiliate doesn’t air it until 4 pm — after the basketball games. Sigh. (Some weeks, KOMO doesn’t air his show at all.)

Donna Brazile is not lying. She said he is “actually one of the more moderate” black ministers. That is the truth. You simply don’t know the black community.

The problem is that this just shows how separate black people are from other, more assimilated races in this country, such as asians and latinos, both of whom intermarry freely and often into the white community. This form of black nationalism has been festering for years. It becomes more visible to nonblack people only in special circumstances, such as when Bill Cosby tried to rally black people to take more responsibility for the condition of our neighborhoods and families. He was excoriated by the “academics” who follow the same line of reasoning. Rev. Wright is one of the more moderate black ministers. But it is a relative term, judged in the context of views commonly expressed in the black community when other races are not present.

It is sad that you and your sponsor, Larry, an ex-CIA agent no less, probably know certain communities in foreign countries better than you know your own fellow citizens in the black community here at home. For example, the other day you commented that Michelle was probably treated well and accepted at Princeton. I don’t know how she was treated. I do know that black students have had racial problems at the Ivy League schools. Historically, Princeton was the last to integrate and was forced to do so by the military after WWII. It was traditionally viewed as one of the roughest for black students because it had a deeply racist and large white Southern representation among the student body. In contrast, Harvard had a more diverse, tolerant, NY/Middle Atlantic, Jewish, student body and a long tradition of integration.

And the Clintons are sometimes ignorant too, despite their long history with the black community. I winced when they chose BET founder Johnson to speak for them. Anyone in the community knows he is held in low regard despite his money because of BET’s low quality and his poor treatment of his ex-(black)wife. But whites sometimes pick anyone who is wealthy and black without really checking to see how he or she is actually viewed in the community. (Note to the Clintons - don’t pick Bryant Gumble.) Black women dominate voting in the black community and our struggles to secure a place in society with far less money and very limited marriage and other social opportunities are an important factor in understanding Obama’s success. Without Michelle, with her down-to-earth style, her dark-brown skin, her deep family roots in the black working class, and her connections to the Chicago black elite, Obama would not have had the success he has had in the black voting community. In sum, Obama’s support is based not on simple “pride” as Ferarro said, stupidly and racistly, but on the belief that somehow the Obamas represent them - the same way people foolishly elected and re-elected Bush thinking he somehow represents them. Try running Tiger Woods or Bryant Gumble for President and see how much of the black vote either would get.

People on this blog can continue to call anyone who supports Obama a mindless idiot. They can continue to define “moderate” for the black community without knowing anything about the community. They can even use the “n-” word as they did on another blog today in criticizing blacks generally while discussing Rev. Wright. Or they can try to learn what is really said in the black community and to understand it so that they can intelligently challenge it. It is worth the effort.

QuietOne..

Thanks for your Comments..These Issues are Worth a debate..and I agree it should be more Public..
and mixed.. We white folks hve to understand that we do not see everything the same as other racial or Ethnic groups..

I have always been grateful that I always had a roof..a Bed..and something to eat..and a good Mom..who had to work hard every day..to take care of us..raised her own chickens..grew a garden..cut the fire wood..never was bitter about anything and never asked anybody for anything..

I picked strawberrys in the summer time..picked wild berrys and fruit and vegtables for my Mom to Preserve..

The problem I have with some of your position is that the Black Communitys then to Dwell to much on Anger..Bitterness over Slavery.. and Black
Citizens Demonstrating thier own form of Racism..Blaming Whitey for so many things..Hating Whitey..being Jelous of Whitey..Hating the Government..and Saying the things Pastor Wright and others Say to Inflame the Black Community..

Doesn’;t belong in America any more than the KKK or White Racists..

I think The Black Community hurts thier Cause with comments like Farrakahn and Pastor Wright or any other Person makes taht Creates Hatred..resentment..or stirs passions so much people are easily pushed into anger and Violence..

I have admired many Black people..i Have Black friends..One is a Pastor who has the Sweetest Spirit I have seen..I have been to his Church..

I Never…ever heard anyone..but Kids on the Streets and in Gangs..Talk like Pastor Wright..

I will try to do more..but I think the Black Community should stop playing the Race issue too..and be better Role Models..

There are alot of Black Multi Millionares who should be forming Trusts..help Clean up Chicago..Help people Learn a trade..and Work with Thier White Counterparts..who really do Care..and Want to help the Black Communitys To..

Thanks again..

Sorry I’m so late replying. I did not intend to say that this attitude is OK, only that is is widespread in the black community, just as racism is widespread in white, asian, and latino communities. Trust me, when only AAs are present you hear these sentiments. Sometimes the sentiments are expressed half-jokingly, other times seriously. Understand that it is dying out, and the younger generations, including my own, and the much older generations, typically don’t feel that way. Rev. Wright is just in the generation where that was pretty common. Of course, the wider “blame game” hurts the AA community itself more than anyone outside it.

Try to post dollar Bill Bradley’s appearance on MTP. I was quite a show. In consecutive sentences, he exposes more Obamabot hypocrisy.

Essentially, he throws out a bunch of unsubstantiated charges against Bill Clinton, corruption and bribery is what he meant, and has the gall to immediately follow it up with the palaver of Obama representing “a new kind of politics” or some other sort of bovine feces.

Change the name from the Democratic Party to the Hemlock Society Party.

How’s about we cancel the Keynote Address at the Convention and instead, everybody floods the stage for a rousing chorus of “God Damn America”?

I don’t understand why no other campaign in American history has embraced this brilliant strategy.

And on the other side, (sorry for the OT, but I thought this might be relevant):

There’s a little problem with Senator McCain’s temper. He’s often used profanity when dealing with his peers in the Senate. Senator Bob Smith, a Republican, said he’s “never seen a person act like that” when describing the frequency and intensity of McCain’s outbursts. A former Mayor of Phoenix, Arizona, Paul Johnson, a Democrat, has also more than once been the target of the POW’s ire, stating “His volatility borders in the area of being unstable.” Do we really want to make this man Chief of the Armed Forces? Speaking of Armed Forces, his military records were volunteered by him for inspection by the press, I believe in 1999. They show, sadly, that Senator McCain’s inability to control his temper dates back to before his captivity. The icing on the cake is while I was looking up the quote from Paul Johnson, I came across an AP quote that the Senator was giving a talk to a GOP fund-raising dinner in Washington. The Senator, in a poor attempt perhaps to emulate the humor Ronald Reagan so often used, told a joke: “Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly? Pause. The Senator’s answer: “because Janet Reno is her father.”

I saw part of This Week and George Will was pretty disgusted by all of this. He did not believe that Obama could go to this church for 20 years and not hear a single hateful sermon. We all know this is a lie and Obama supporters with any common sense know it’s a lie too but they are covering for him. They just don’t get it. There is only so much lying that Donna Brazile can do. If Obama wins the nomination expect FOX News and the GOP to have tapes with Obama sitting in that church during one of Wright’s hate sermons. I’ve already found several articles which stated Obama was at the church when Wright spoke about white arrogance and White America. I suspect that Obama and/or his wife was in that church on Christmas Day when Wright spoke about Hillary Clinton. Sooner or later someone in his congregation will be paid off to tell the truth in an interview. FOX’s coverage of Wright has just begun. Just wait until the general.
You should also put up a video of Juan Willams who was on FOX News Sunday and made some great points. It seems like the conservatives have more sense than we do right now. They know what can be disastrous in a general election which is why they always win.

This editorial from the Denver post is incorrect in it’s assertion Hillary Clinton’s campaign circulated the Obama picture.

It does stress Wright travelled with Farrakhan to Lybia, meeting the terrorist Gaddafi, killer of 270 over Lockerbie, Scotland.

I wonder if they know Auchi, and Rezko, too?

It’s a small small world…

I, personally would not associate with two men, (Wright, and Farrakhan) who feel there is no problem meeting socially, as a sign of respect and admiration, with another man (Ghaddafi) who sent his agents to blow up an airplane, over Scotland.

Never mind the election, this is simply moral, at this point.

Good heavens, pelosi and dean are dense.

Obama’s connections are fair game

By David Harsanyi
Article Last Updated: 03/03/2008 07:14:04 PM MST

Has there ever been a more politically unfortunate middle name — historically speaking — than Barack Hussein Obama Jr.’s?

Probably not. And though stories of Obama’s ties to Islam are sordid, his Christian ties are another matter.

When a conservative Cincinnati talk show host recently limbered up a crowd at a John McCain rally, he repeatedly referred to Obama as “Barack Hussein Obama.” This prompted massive outrage and an apology from McCain.

If you haven’t noticed, Hussein is a Muslim name — as are Barack and Obama, by the way. What the electorate is supposed to garner from this nugget, I suppose, is that Obama is a closet Islamic imam.

Now, it should be pointed out that many of the individuals so shocked by the use of Obama’s given middle name are many of the same people who eagerly label George W. Bush a Nazi or other exaggerated pejoratives. Selective indignation, clearly, is not confined to either party’s faithful.

In fact, it was a Hillary Clinton aide who last week disseminated a picture of Obama, on a visit to Kenya, looking like he was dressed for the Haj. The Drudge Report, in turn, posted shots of House majority leader Nancy Pelosi, First Lady Laura Bush, and others, wearing kafia headdresses (why an American woman would don misogynistic headwear is a mystery), as is customary on official visits.

The use of “Hussein” and the Kenyan picture are no more than petty political ploys, likely to backfire. Obama has assured Americans, with the political adeptness of a social conservative, that he is “a devout Christian. I have been a member of the same church for 20 years. I pray to Jesus every night.”

Impressive, I suppose, depending on where you pray.

Obama, the guiding hand to American unanimity, has for the past 20 years been a parishioner at Chicago’s Trinity United Church of Christ, whose leader is, by any reasonable standard, a racist.

The pastor in question is Jeremiah Wright Jr. It was his use of the term “audacity of hope” in a sermon that inspired Obama to title his best-selling book with the phrase.

Wright is a longtime supporter of Nation of Islam’s Louis Farrakhan. Last year, the “Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr. Trumpeter Award” was given to Farrakhan, who, it turns out, “truly epitomized greatness.”

Farrakhan, in addition to making frequent distasteful comments about race, is a person who referred to Judaism as a “gutter religion” and its adherents a bunch of “bloodsuckers.”

Wright even tagged along when Farrakhan visited Libya’s dictator Moammar Khadafy — a terrorist financier directly linked to the murder of Americans — for a chitchat in 1980s.

Obama has shown zero inclination to agree with any of Farrakhan or Wright’s odious statements. But as Obama’s largest recipient of charitable donations, Trinity United Church of Christ is more than a fleeting distraction in the candidate’s life. This is not guilt by association. Until a last minute change of heart, Obama’s campaign invocation was to be given by Wright.

After bumping Wright, an Obama aide explained: “Senator Obama is proud of his pastor and his church, but because of the type of attention it was receiving on blogs and conservative talk shows, he decided to avoid having statements and beliefs being used out of context and forcing the entire church to defend itself.”

If he is proud of his pastor, then asking Obama to clarify his connection to Wright is neither slander nor innuendo — nor is it the right-wing “noise machine” in action.

It is nearly inconceivable to imagine Clinton or McCain — or any presidential candidate — enjoying a close relationship with pastor who praises a racist leader for “his integrity and honesty” not coming under the scrutiny of the entire media.

No, Obama shouldn’t have to deal with unfair innuendo, but he deserves no dispensation when it comes to Wright.

BO’s cult will soon be changing this to say that he was a prisoner at Chicago’s Trinity United Church of Christ, whose leader is, by any reasonable standard, a racist.

He didn’t want to be there. He was forced to go, just once when delivering food baskets to the poor.

None seems to be as bad as the good Reverand Wright.

Comment by Stage Left | 2008-03-16 23:21:18

I’ll be the first to say that perhaps it is time to face the double standard. Out of guilt, I am assuming as I don’t know, the AA community has been allowed to openly vent in a way that no other race in this country would dare.

Wright’s diatribe and the fact that he tapes himself and sells the hate truly does define “The Audacity of Hope.”

I only wish we could call Mr. Wright for what he really is: a businessman. A very successful one.

As for Brazile, she has been lying for a long while now and nobody has called her on it. What is up with that?

As I recall, it had something to do with Katrina. I wish I could be more specific. I would love to see that tape.

Comment by Terry | 2008-03-16 18:10:10

Donna B. appears regularly on cable news as a DNC official, but she is clearly an Obama supporter. She has been less than honest in her presentation as simply a party official.

But then, there has been a lot of dishonesty from the Obama campaign. Is my memory failing me, or is it not true that Obama said at a debate (the one before S.C.perhaps) that his association with Rezko was limited to 5 hours or so of work for Rezko by his law firm? Evan Obama’s own disclosures demonstrate that he certainly had a greater assocation than 5 hours of legal work - I think Obama lied, and he should called to respond.

And Obama never knew his pastor harbored such feelings? C’mon. That is a really doozie. No one goes to a church for 20 or so years and gives $20,000+ (according to BHO’s tax return) without knowing what the pastor thinks. We all go to churches with which we are philosophically aligned; we do not go to churches we disagree with for more than a week or two. Please, Obama, Axelrod, et al, stop talking to us like we’re idiots.

I think it is very telling that none of Obama’s big name backers are out in the media this weekend defending him. Where is Kerry? Ted Kennedy? Caroline (whom I haven’t seen since California)? Maria Shriver (ditto)? The governors of Kansas & Missouri? Sen. Macaskill? John Lewis? Jesse Jackson? JJ Jr?

Could a veteran of the civil rights movement, like Lewis or Jackson, make a credible argument that one doesn’t necessarily agree with one’s pastor despite attending a church for two decades? Black churches were the heart and soul of the civil rights movement. He denigrates that important history by choosing a church which suits his needs when he is running for office on the southside of Chicago and then rejects it when he is running for office elsewhere. Either BHO is a liar ( and he does agree with Wright) or he has been exploitive of Wright by associating with Wright when he need southside votes and distancing himself from Wright when he didn’t.

Either way, this is not the sort of character I want in the White House.

Wright is a moderate…

That is like saying “I can’t drive 55″….Hey it’s Bristol short track today.

What I think is instructive is what Donna B had to say about Edwards and Mudcat…she was clearly “in the pew” for Obama from the outset.

The perception of race in the MSM is akin to the marketing of Barbie of the 50’s…and yet the first black Barbie was released in 1980, some 30 years later.
My point is, the economic strata the AA community has lived through is under increasing economic pressure from the above and below. I can not live it, but I can appreciate it. While the AA community are not alone they are being singled out by Obama and his minions for a political wedge issue.

An Iranian government agency, the Institute for the Intellectual Development of Children and Young Adults, has developed two dolls that it hopes will counterbalance the corrupting influence of “western-style” Barbie dolls. The dolls, Dara (male) and Sara (female, and dressed from head to toe in the black chador), have been devised to reinforce traditional Iranian values, which the authorities thought were being undermined by a huge influx of American toys and accessories into the Iranian market.

I noticed quite a while ago that Donna cannot hide her true feelings when it comes to the Clinton-Obama competition. But I also think that we should not concern ourselves with who is in favor of what candidate.
The existence of sermons by Senator Obama’s long-time parish minister, spiritual adviser, and member of his African-American religious committee will speak for itself.
No political campaign in the U.S. should have religious advisers in an official committee function. Imagine, a white candidate with a caucasian religious campaign committee.
However it is sliced and rationalized, there should not be room for this sort of racial divisiveness in 21st century America. The Reverend Wright’s long-time church and the overall United Church Christ can point their fingers to the media and partisan opponents and whoever else, they need to look at their own divisiveness, if they really want to unite.

This is an example of Donna Brazile’s naivete. This is from a Wash. Post article after Katrina. She wants to believe Bush is the answer. As she wants to believe Obama will bring us together. Unfortunately she is a fool.
“On Thursday night President Bush spoke to the nation from my city. I am not a Republican. I did not vote for George W. Bush — in fact, I worked pretty hard against him in 2000 and 2004. But on Thursday night, after watching him speak from the heart, I could not have been prouder of the president and the plan he outlined to empower those who lost everything and to rebuild the Gulf Coast.

Comment by Ann | 2008-03-16 20:25:43

Really, it doesn’t matter if a video is produced of BO sitting in a pew for one of these sermons…it would be great but it isn’t necessary. The videos of Rev. Wright are numerous and they are all hateful so all that needs to be proved is that BO went to church when Rev Wright was preaching. Done deal.

Plus the whole, “You’re going to have to distance yourself if you get the nomination” and “I can’t have you give the invocation because you get a little ‘rough’ in your sermons sometimes” say it all.

BO’s pastor of 20 years is a black liberation theologian who hates white people, hates “white america”, particularly hates the Clintons, and is disgusting and racist in his sermons. Sitting in this man’s church for 20 years should disqualify BO from being president of the US. Really, it should disqualify him.

I told you what a dreamer he was. I told you how idealistic he was. We talked about how refreshing it would be for someone who knew about Islam to be in the Oval Office. Your own question to me was, Didn’t I think it would be incredible to have somebody in the Oval Office who not only knew about Muslims, but had living and breathing Muslims in his own family?

I have never been exposed to that kind of duplicitous behavior before, and I want to write you publicly to let you know that I do not approve of it and will not be party to any further smearing of the name, the reputation, the integrity or the character of perhaps this nation’s first (and maybe even only) honest candidate offering himself for public service as the person to occupy the Oval Office.
