Open Mouth, Insert Foot [Updated]

Yesterday former Democratic nominee and Obama supporter John Kerry confirmed everything that Geraldine Ferraro said. Not only that, he took it a few steps further, In an interview with the New Bedford Standard Times Senator Kerry stated that:

the color of Obama’s skin makes him uniquely qualified for president and even reach out to the moderate Islam world (VIDEO BELOW).

Please take note that John Kerry used the phrase the color of Obama’s skin makes him uniquely qualified for president.

Now excuse me if I belabor the point, but didn’t Geraldine Ferraro say basically the exact same thing when she stated:

“I think what America feels about a woman becoming president takes a very secondary place to Obama’s campaign - to a kind of campaign that it would be hard for anyone to run against,” she said. “For one thing, you have the press, which has been uniquely hard on her. It’s been a very sexist media. Some just don’t like her. The others have gotten caught up in the Obama campaign.

“If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position,” she continued. “And if he was a woman (of any color) he would not be in this position. He happens to be very lucky to be who he is. And the country is caught up in the concept.”

Ferraro was referencing the truth that anyone else with Obama’s light experience would not even be considered for the Presidency. But since he is an African American and charismatic people are willing to look past his relative inexperience that would otherwise be seen as a non qualifier.

But Kerry took it even further. According to him electing Barack Obama would somehow redeem the United States.

USANews

“It would be such an affirmation of who we say we are as a people if we can elect an African American president, a young leader who is obviously a visionary and got an ability to inspire people,” Kerry said. “It will give us an ability to talk to those countries, to in some cases go around their dictator leaders to the people and inspire the people in ways that we can’t otherwise.”

Well, a short message to Senator Kerry who evidently has a bad case of short term memory loss. Not 8 years ago we had a President that was able to inspire people. He was also able to talk to countries in ways that had not been possible before. But the reason he was able to do this had nothing to do with the color of his skin. It was based solely on the content of his character which should be above all else the determining factor in who our leaders should be.

Apparently Senator Kerry seems to think that electing Barack Obama would not only help us get rid of our awful white guilt about our slavery past, he seems to think that electing an African American as President would somehow open up new avenues with more moderate adherents of Islam. And no, I’m not making this stuff up.

The Massachusetts senator said Obama has an ability to perhaps even empower moderate Islam “to be able to stand up against the racial misinterpretation of a legitimate religion.”

The racial misinterpretation of a legitimate religion? Is he talking about The Nation of Islam? Because that is the only racial misinterpretation of Islam I can think of. And just what is it that supports Kerry’s contention should this even be true? Is it because Obama is a long standing member of a church that recently gave a lifetime achievement award to Louis Farrakhan, calling him a man that “epitomizes greatness”? Is that his bonafides that will convince “moderate” Islamists to venture away from the Nation of Islam? Somehow I just don’t see that happening.

And yet Kerry decides to really explain this for us so there is no doubt as to how Obama will help us.

Asked by a reporter what gave Obama the credibility to do so, Kerry said, “Because he’s African American. Because he’s a black man, who has come from a place of oppression and repression through the years in our own country.

Lets see… Kerry is making the claim that Obama came from a “place of oppression and repression”. Hmmm… the facts don’t square much with the myth. Barack Obama was not born into poverty and hardship. I have never read that he went a day without a decent meal. In fact he attended private schools since he was a child. And he graduated from Harvard. In fact in the year 2006 Barack and Michelle Obama claimed a combined salary of $506,618. That is OVER a half million dollars in one year. Not exactly anywhere near the poverty line. Obama’s Senate salary alone is $169,300 + VERY generous benefits. That ain’t so shabby. In fact I would be quite happy making that much money every year.

But somehow Senator Kerry attributes Obama’s background as coming from a place of “oppression and repression.” I can’t speak for anyone else but if I made the kind of money Obama makes and was as popular and all that, I am not so sure that I would consider myself oppressed or repressed. I mean sure, compared to some of the real million and billionaires I might feel like Ma and Pa Kettle but otherwise I would feel pretty successful. Definitely not repressed or oppressed. Unless I went to a church that preached every Sunday how the white man had been oppressing me in the US of KKK A, that is.

Senator Kerry being the astute politician he is answers the deeper question with a lesson in history.

We only broke the back of civil rights, Jim Crow, in the 1960s here. Everybody in the world knows this is a recent journey for America too. And everybody still knows that issues of skin and discrimination still exist.”

So because civil rights weren’t established in the 17 states that had Jim Crow laws until 40 years ago, we need Barack Obama to be our President to show people just how far we’ve come? Is Senator Kerry suggesting that BECAUSE Obama is a black man he would make a better President? Isn’t that the definition of a Double Standard?

If you can stomach it, watch the words come out of Kerry’s amazing mouth.

UPDATED (From Larry Johnson): Tremendous piece, as always, by Fleaflicker. Since I pay for the blog I wanted to exercise an owner’s right and attach myself publicly to quality work. John Kerry has an important point that has been overlooked so far in the comments. Muslims really do like black people better than white people. How do I know? How many white people did Arab slave traders kidnap and sell? Not many. How many black people? Millions. I hope my sarcasm is understood. I cannot believe that Kerry could be so simple minded and misinformed about history. Retired, who comments below, has it right–Kerry went full auto in shooting himself in the foot and catching Obama in the friendly fire as well.

I’ll have to check out John Kerry’s challenger for his Senate seat here in MA…

Comment by Mechan | 2008-03-20 17:16:15

He has two republicans so far that are running against him…one is Jeff Beatty who is a Army Delta Force officer/FBI agent/CIA Officer…
the other is a man by the name of Jim Ogonowski (R)..he is the brother of one of the pilots (AA) on the horrible day 9/11
I thought I heard that some democrats are running as well, don’t have that info right now…

Comment by Andy | 2008-03-20 18:30:54

I vaguely heard about some businessman challenging him also? Have no idea who he was though…

But will take a look. I am getting very irritated with John Kerry; I already wrote to him ….

Comment by Nellie | 2008-03-20 21:03:42

Andy,

I believe one of the Dem’s running against him is Ed O’Reilly - I may not have the name correct, but the guy is a lawyer from Gloucester, Ma.

Several months ago I saw a brief TV ad with the Song playing softly in the background, and this guy saying he knows HOW to fight - He has experience in knowing when to hold, and when it’s best to fold.

A Democrat -

You said “Limbaugh Republicans for Clinton” when BO is running ads for Dems for a day?!

Does that crap sell on the playground?

Comment by apishapa | 2008-03-21 10:13:50

WHat is it Obama calls his hundreds of thousands of Republican supporters? Did he call them Obamacans in a speech where he pointed out his vast Republican support?

Didn’t he run ads in Nevada begging Republicans to register as Democrats for a day? Didn’t he urge Republicans in Iowa to crossover and vote for him? Hasn’t he been just this week blocking the re-vote in Michigan because Republican primary voters would not be allowed to vote? Hasn’t Obama been running ads nonstop in Pennsylvania urging Republicans to register as Democrats fo rhte primary?

It is Obama who has been courting Republicans for a year. Not Clinton. She does not brag about herr Republican support. Republicans hate Hillary, they always have and she knows it.

His current term will end on Jan. 3 2009.

He was being challenged (in Dem primary) not by a businessman–
as I wrote above- but by
attorney Ed O’Reilly ( I don’t know who he is..)

I guess I missed my chance to look into him; I wasn’t
paying attention to Congress
when I voted in the primaries….

from the Dem. side.
The state primaries in MA are Sept. 16th 2008

Have to find out more about Ed O’Reilly.

Wow, what a different between a decorated combat vet (Kerry) and a politico who hasn’t served in the military (Obama). When Barry O. aims for his toes, he carefully plunks them off one at a time with aimed individual shots. Kerry just puts the M-16 down on his foot, selects full auto, and holds the trigger back.

Kind of a shock to discover that he’s just plain stupid.

Comment by joe | 2008-03-21 01:40:05

It’s not about intelligence or even judgment…it’s about being wealthy enough to become a senator or congressman or having access to wealth. All campaigns should be publicly financed else the problem will remain. For that matter higher education should be publicly financed (hell even Cuba is exporting dedicated Doctors due to free education). Did anyone ever really like Kerry or was he just another pushed on us to make believe he was a great candidate? Most people(who consider such issues) don’t see BO as ‘black’…they see him as ‘Muslim colored’. This race baiting bullshit will backfire and become a hugely divisive issue. It’s amazing how issues that should have no bearing on becoming president like race, color, sex, are impacting this campaign. Just saying…

Comment by madamab | 2008-03-21 12:36:28

I absolutely agree re: public financing. The incredible wealth of many of these politicians, especially Senators, can really insulate them from the daily concerns of non-rich Americans. Yet, who else can afford to campaign for Senate but a very wealthy person these days?

One of the reasons that the media elite punditry always hated the Clintons was because they were not rich, and actually exemplified the American Dream that “anyone can be President.” Nothing plutocrats hate more than people who are Not Their Sort.

Hillary and Bill are rich now, but they haven’t forgotten their roots.

Duh! He just wrote off Mich and Fla based on a stupid twisted logic. Oh, and he said, “Don’t worry, Mich and Fla will vote Democratic in the GE - they don’t need to seat these delegates.”

Arg!!!

Kerry is now Obama’s b—ch, cause if Kerry ever dares take a contrary position to Obama, Kerry will get the “Obama pointed finger you’re a racist” treatment for these remarks. In fact, if Obama becomes President, he’ll control all white politicians because at some time or other each one of them has said something that is susceptible of being manipulated to be racist.

CHICAGO TRIBUNE

“In winning the Democratic Senate primary in Illinois, Obama drew as many as two white votes for every black one, showing nearly unprecedented crossover appeal for a black candidate in a statewide race. Obama acknowledges, with no small irony, that he benefits from his race.

If he were white, he once bluntly noted, he would simply be one of nine freshmen senators, almost certainly without a multimillion-dollar book deal and a shred of celebrity. Or would he have been elected at all?”

of course Hillary can’t say a thing about sexism and neither can anyone else. Even Scarborough said yesterday that they would not tolerate her saying anything of the sort. Yet they have enabled Obama’s race baiting at every turn.

I have truly and completely had it with this double standard.

Comment by JoanH | 2008-03-20 18:51:36

Oh and PS…. Hillary is the toughest person in this race. Scarborough and the bowtied one were laughing about it this morning. It was one of the few times they have not made me sick… they were saying that the two toughest politicians these days were Cheney and Hillary.
You can not knock that woman down. She takes abuse like no one and she keeps coming back and insisting on doing what is right anyway. I know people are cynical about her and I am sure she has political ambition, nothing wrong with that.
But in truth she is the real visionary here. She is the one with a picture of what America can be if we all work together. Obama’s vision seems to be all about him being president. I don’t see any other vision he might be talking about.

Way to polarize the electorate, there, John. Vote for Obama BECAUSE he is black? How is that NOT a racist statement? Obama’s “skin tone” is the overriding element in this election? Oh my. I guess as a “typical white person” I just don’t buy that argument.

Comment by Linda | 2008-03-20 16:47:54

Ahhhh Kerry, Mr. Excitement hisself. So many things come to mind. The biggest was how he wouldn’t fight to make sure the election wasn’t stolen in 2004. When Senator Edwards had only said like an hour before that they would demand a recount. Kerry took Edwards by surprise I think on that one. Yeah, Kerry so thoughtful, and what a fighter. His is a combat hero you know. I’m only giving Hillary $ these days. The Dems don’t have their hands in my pocketbook any more. The whole party needs to be cleaned up. Yeah, Kerry - what a fighter. Against Clinton that is. Not when a recount in Ohio was needed. Hillary probably scares him.

There is an obvious difference between Kerry’s remark and Ferraro’s comments.

Kerry is saying that Obama’s race is an asset.

That is different than Ferraro saying Obama would not be where he is if not for his race.

Ferraro didn’t just say his race was an advantage. She said that absent his race, he could not have achieved what he has.

Kerry is making no such claim.

Come on, people — we’re all smart enough to see the difference.

Kerry is deluding himself if he believes that the Muslim fanatics in the MidEast would love a CHRISTIAN!!

Ferraro was spot on and the only mistake she made was in stating the obvious.

Reverse Racism and Sexism are alive and well.

Comment by carwinrpc | 2008-03-20 18:44:27

If you and Ferraro mean that because Obama has managed to transcend several negatives, ie. his color, his youth, his relative lack of experience on the national stage, and that he has managed to be so visible in doing so BECAUSE of his color, then I don’t see how one can quibble with that.

I don’t buy it, though, that this is what Ferraro was getting at. Her comments weren’t nearly that subtle, that nuanced–remember she managed to accuse her own critics of racism-not the first time in her history that she has taken the low road when criticized, and not an uplifting experience, either.

Look, I can read: I know you have nothing good to say about Obama, that’s your right and I have nothing to cavil about there, but the fact is that one of the most important jobs a President can have is to make the nation feel that sense of purpose that comes from recharging their faith in their nationhood. Reagan, whom I had no use for at all, was an effective president because he could do that as well as anyone. That Reagan managed to convince the nation of some things that probably weren’t to my liking is a mark against him in my book, but I suspect I’m in the minority. Can Obama do the same? I think that’s been demonstrated repeatedly in the past few months that he can be immensely convincing–so much so that Hillary has actually tried to defuse his substantial advantage in that arena. But being convincing is not a flaw.

Does he have the “experience”? No. Neither does either of the other people in the race–in fact, as anyone who bothers to think of it for more than a moment, no one can possibly have such experience until they are in that most demanding of jobs. Not someone who was Vice President, not someone who was First Lady, not someone who was Governor of a state. To paraphrase George Eliot, the job forges the man, but the man brings his own iron. That is the job of choosing the President, not reading his resume, but judging his mettle–and not just his or her toughness, for all three of these people are tough as nails, but also whether they are who they claim to be and whether they have the values and suppleness of intellect to survive the ordeal.

That’s what we should be thinking about, instead of fooling ourselves into thinking that one or the other is so well prepared for the job that it will be a doodle. It won’t.

Comment by Shainzona | 2008-03-20 18:51:45

Sorry to repeat myself, but what difference is there between what Ferraro said (in proper context) and what Obama said about himself in 2005?

I think that’s been demonstrated repeatedly in the past few months that he can be immensely convincing–so much so that Hillary has actually tried to defuse his substantial advantage in that arena. But being convincing is not a flaw.

Obama is corrupt, taking money from Saddam’s former bagman. Saddam, the mass murder who gassed the Kurds.

I know it is not in the make up of the Obama supporter to be morally outraged in the face of such action, but many others, here, and internationally, are horrified by Obama’s associations.

Is this what you were speaking of?

Comment by JoanH | 2008-03-20 18:55:38

Comment by simon | 2008-03-20 20:50:08

Ok, I have a question for you car, if you know, and this is off topic, and I apologize.

Do you know what the true Muslim attitude is toward Anglos?

I am not speaking American-Muslim, I am speaking middle easterners.

And not speaking Muslim per se, but, say, Iran, what is the average, non violent Iranian, or Saudi attitude toward the average Westerner?

With the exception of the kook crews (your local terrorist network and the rich guys who support them), they’re at least somewhat tolerant, right?

Or am I mistaken?

And even then, given the America government, men like Rumsfeld, have supported and personally profited off some HORRIFIC regimes, ( Saddam, the Shah and the Saudi royalty), well, I’d be pissed off, too. As furious as we are about the Saudis and the hijackers, the Kurds must somewhere, be furious about Rumsfeld selling Saddam the gas.

And if there is ever to be progress, this must be acknowledged.

Again, someone once told me I had to understand my government did bad things, as well as good things, and this is one of those “bad things” situations.

In addition to the morality of the situation, if the US wants to remain strategically viable, it must make inroads into the middle east, meaning diplomatic dealings with Iran, with a concurrent effort to recognize human rights. This alone distinguishes us from China, and Russia and it is collateral, abstract good will.
That is simply, also, to remain competitive with China, Russia and the EU on a more equal, above board basis, now and in the future. The implications are enormous.

And I am not speaking of the terrorists here, I am speaking of the otherwise peaceful Muslim.

Valid points are being made about Wright, but it’s so easy to just start blindly bashing.

That being said, I disagree with you on that point.

If you’re looking to the future, don’t make Obama a victim, a martyr.

Toward ‘Anglos’? More to the point, what’s the attitude toward Westerners?

My own feelings, based on having lived in Turkey for several years, is that most Americans would do well to have the sort of tolerant attitude toward Muslims that has characterized Muslim attitudes toward the West.

Are there extremists, only a fool wouldn’t know that there are. But once again, the story is complicated and therefore no one wants to take the time to understand, especially when we can just nurse our outrage.

Reagan didn’t make me feel a damn thing, much less good. After living through the Reagan Years are finallly under stood the Medieval Era. It’s sickening the way Reagan is overhyped. What was his legacy? Right Talk Radio? Rush?

Americans are ridiculous about needing to vote for the ‘popular’, pleasing-to-the eye guy. I say Hillary is precisely what we need now. A no-nonsense leader who will have to make tough decisions and who is realistic about the way people feel about her. She’ll have something to prove. I think the country needs a president like that. She’s not my boss or my mother and we don’t have to swap spit.

Thank you so much whoever posted the word “assclown” — couldn’t have said it better myself.

As dire and unbelievable as this whole situation is, I was grateful for a much needed laugh.

How wonderful if the endlessly dull Kerry would actually take a moment to think before he speaks. I have never heard such senseless drivel.

Go Hillary ‘08

I can just see if Obama became President!

While visiting strong allies in London, for a mini summit with the leaders of England, Canada, Italy and Mexico Barack went back to the hotel room after the first night looking down and frustrated! Michelle asks what is wrong snoogums? Barack replies, I gave those folks my best speech, included my anti-war speech too, and asked them to co-operate in financing the rebuilding of Iraq! They all said it was a “fairy tale” for them to even get involved when things were getting better and I withdrew our troops recklessly, and they were all expanded to the limits in Afganistan! Michelle was getting more and more steamed by the minute!

The following morning at a breakfast of the leaders and wives, Michelle got up and went to the microphone and asked for everyones attention! The press was abuzz and cameras were rolling from all the worlds media awaiting Michelle’s words!

Michelle began: Never in my entire adult life have I ever been more proud of my country! We keep house home in order because of the faith instilled in us by our Church and its teachings and that is how we keep the White House in order! So what the f*ck is wrong with all you folks, you think it is a “fairy tale” that a black man can be President? You not realize this black man can simply push a f*ckin button and nuke your f*ckin asses in a second? And this time I will make sure he presses the right f*ckin button!

Michelle Belle is one piece of work. Angry, entitled, militant, self righteous.

She is getting ready to become America’s Queen.

Vogue and fashion slicks are getting their PR stories and puff pieces ready for the self righteous and pugnacious Michelle. Annie Liebowitz will photograph her with Queen Elizabeth
wardrobe,lighting, and props.

She is still saying “What the f**k is wrong with you dumb white “folks”? You think a black woman can’t kick ass?”

The photo op is being planned as I write.

Lou Dobbs had a clip of Kerry repeating this and the panel talking about it, it was really pretty funny in a sad way. If you see the clip you have to wonder if Kerry had a few too many glasses of wine or was smoking some wacky weed or something. It is a really bizarre thing to see. Larry added to it to the original diary on it. It is a must see…Dobbs had a poll up too that said Obama’s typical white comment and Kerry’s comments today, 62% said these comments would hurt BO.

>>> Kerry went full auto in shooting himself in the foot and catching Obama in the friendly fire as well.

Couldn’t happen to two nicer guys. It made me gag to pull the lever for Kerry in ‘04. Nice to know that my impressions (all the wau back to 1971) about this loon were correct.

Someone has breached Obama’s passport file.

(I’m sure they will blame Hillary.)

That is the most absurd thing to say.

We need a competent leader. Did he forget that part?

Comment by Will | 2008-03-20 21:30:04

Now Kerry is playing the race and victim cards for Obama? As if he didn’t do enough of that in the speach. Compare Wright to grandma? (A grotesque analogy. We don’t choose our grandparents. And no grandmother would condemn others to hell. No Christian would either. Luke 6:37). Mention race and Katrina (play the victim card). Mention race and O.J. (Change the subject again but with something so unrelated and trivial it makes the whole issue seem ridiculous). Invent a racial gaff for the Clinton team (Imply for the umpteenth time this week that the Clintons are racist, the most disgusting, ongoing smear of the season, only possible with help from an amoral media and supporters too ignorant for words). Position the attack at the end of a section (Leave the public with the disgusting falsehood hanging in the air). Keep the arrogant attitude lest someone notice your shocking lack of qualifications.

Will,

I am not a pessimist but am beginning to despair for the democrats and what they are doing to their party and what they are doing to the Clintons.

This cheap racist with Malcolm X credentials has been taken into the fold of the democratic party.

I have heard misogyny, slurs on the Clintons, and race baiting to the point of despair.

Obama will tear the party apart, and with the help of the party leaders either lead the party over a cliff, or elect a charlatan who already promises us he will reach out to the Muslims, big time.

The Black dialogue of hate is upon us, and a good deal will be done to hide the white hatred that we
never thought existed to extent we have seen simmering under the surface of “Hope and Change”.

Kerry was pandering today in his usually wimpy way, and I have just heard that Obama’s passport has been hacked at the State Dept.

Maybe something will turn up that is unexpected. Obama can’t blame Hillary for this but watch him try.

The media are more than disgusting as I watch Obama being sold without reservation on Larry King and the rest of the mediawhores.

Obama is a whining pansy. He can’t even take a primary opponent, how the heck is he going to live with the Republican Swiftboats? He’s a serious lightweight who only carried states that haven’t voted Democratic since the 60s in general elections. And even then he had to have caucuses where he could send kids that cut class to drive everybody away, while their parents, who are paying for their education, were working and couldn’t caucus. Obama is a serious lightweight and he loves to use his own race card, which is getting kind of tiring in case you haven’t noticed. Waaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!

Since when are we expected to choose our leaders based on how much the Arabs will like them? They love the hell out of Bush and that’s worked out great.

Hillary can kick their asses. Obama can’t.

Geraldine Ferraro should ask for a public apology from Obama. He was out of line.

Flealicker writes: In an interview with the New Bedford Standard Times Senator Kerry stated that:

“the color of Obama’s skin makes him uniquely qualified for president and even reach out to the moderate Islam world (VIDEO BELOW).”

The video has no such statement in it.

The quote is actually attibutable to NBC pundit Mike Melori, in his commments, i.e., his interpretation of Kerry’s comments.

So, you’re a liar, obviously.

Congratulations, Larry, on your increased traffic. With the help of botttomfeeders like Flealicker, you may soon be right up there with, say, Free Republc.

Please think long and hard about whether you want to be that.

Not exactly an endorsement there Chris.

Comment by Chris Vosburg | 2008-03-21 01:48:22

By the way, Fleakicker, since you have based the entirety of your essay on an erroneously attributed quote of John Kerry’s, that kind of means that your entire essay is horseshit.

Isn’t it?

Thee’s no point in “update,” since the truth kills your argument, so I’m curious, what are you gonna do?

My bet, coward, is that you won’t cop to an error.

So again, what are you gonna do?
