Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee Booed by Pro-Obama Constituents

Here’s the description provided by the YouTube video-maker:

U.S. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee from Texas (D-Houston) gets booed at Texas Senate District 13 Democratic Convention on March 29, 2008. Though her congressional district is overwhelmingly in support of Senator Barack Obama for President, Congresswoman Jackson Lee is a superdelegate and supporter of Senator Hillary Clinton in the 2008 U.S. Presidential Race. When she took the stage, she had to wait a couple of minutes for the booing and Obama cheering to subside and kept remarking, “I’ll wait for you to stop.”

From KVUE, the Austin, Texas television station that has more raw video of the booing:

HOUSTON — On the campus of Texas Southern University was a Democratic Senate District convention unlike the others being held across the state.

Democrats together, but yet still divided over who should be the Democratic presidential nominee.

And never more was that more apparent than when longtime Houston Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee took the stage.

A majority of the crowd showed its support for Barack Obama by shouting his name and booing the congresswoman, letting her know what they thought of her allegiance to Hillary Clinton.

To some, especially Clinton supporters at the convention, the booing came out of nowhere.

[...]

[F]or those backing Obama, they said it sent a clear message to the congresswoman from her constituents.

“For her to standout against the wishes of her district and be a Clinton supporter, I guess pissed off our delegation,” said Obama supporter Phillip.

For years, Sheila Jackson Lee has been a popular politician in the 18th Congressional district; winning re-election overwhelmingly at least five times since 1995. The district is predominately made of up African American voters.

“It is always tough to go into the face of adversity,” she admitted to the chorus of boos she received Saturday.

But could the disfavor from those who support Obama, hurt Jackson Lee?

“We are somewhat in uncharted waters,” said 11 News political expert Bob Stein. “It simply reflects the fact that Lee is in tough position here.

“Her district when 90-percent to 10-percent for Obama.” …

Why has Lee stood her ground, holding strong on her support for Hillary?

“What would I be if I went back on my word to an individual that I’ve worked with for more than a decade and sat down talked to me about her vision for America,” said Jackson Lee.

See more of the 713 news story on how Rep. Lee was treated, as well as the Texas conventions.

[...]

Getting wild

One of the wildest conventions was Senate District 19 held at a San Antonio warehouse.
When there was a fight over the list and credentials of registered delegates, the warehouse owner threatened to expel the convention.

At the Senate District 13 convention at Texas Southern University in Houston, an Obama stronghold, Clinton supporters unsuccessfully tried to gain delegate strength by asking Obama backers to switch so they would be elected as delegates to the state convention. Obama came out of the convention with 272 state delegates to Clinton’s 69.

When U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Houston, a superdelegate pledged to Clinton, spoke to the Senate District 13 convention, some Obama supporters booed her.

Despite the hassles Saturday, many Democrats said the turnout excited them about their prospects of breaking the Republican political hold on Texas. …

If they want to talk about the SDs vote along the line of people in the district. Then Kennedy and Kerry need to endorse Hillary, same as Bill Richardson.

They can’t have it both way.

I had a friend, as a child, we were in 7th grade, she was riding with her mother and sister in their car, in the backseat alone, on the way home from the store.

She saw they were about to be broadsided, and knowing there was nothing she could do to stop it, as she wasn’t driving, and she was only 12, she simply moved from behind the passenger side, over to the driver’s side, avoiding the worst of the impact.

Smart, I guess, kept her head, at least.

Anyway, when I see aspersions to Rwanda, I have to think the same, and just, wow.

There is a war strategy called the Pillsbury dough boy, you press the tummy, the fat comes out the other side, I think Obama’s newest campaign tactic is more like who cut the cheese?, you know, one stinker, the room temporarily empties, and when it’s clear, everyone can come back in.

“A whole generation of entitlement freaks.”

There is an interesting article I read recently at the On Line Jerusalem site entitled, “Obama-mania and cult of self-esteem.”

The author, Abraham Katsman’s main point is that Obama’s most ardent supporters are products of the public schools ’self-esteem’ philosophy.

He states, ” Obama has tapped into is the first generation educated in schools focused on “self-esteem.” Now, the products of self-esteem education have come of political age in substantial numbers, perhaps with profound implications for this and future elections.”

Isn’t it amazing that someone with the credentials of Sheila Jackson Lee is treated with such discourtesy while an empty suit like Obama is placed on a pedestal.
Can anyone explain to me why the DNC is condoning such a rigged election (caucuses instead of primaries, Red/small states given the same weight as large states, not acknowledging MI/FL, etc.)? Do they really believe that Obama can win the general election? The only way I will not vote for McCain (if Obama is anointed the DNC’s candidate) is if he selects Inhofe or someone like him as his Vice-President.

What country IS this? These are not Democrats, these are not American voters interested in the good of their country, these are FANS! They don’t care about their party, they are like mindless cult followers, they don’t even know why they’re acting like this…where was this vehemence when Bush was getting elected twice?

And where are the interviews with John Kerry and Ted Kennedy, defending their decision to endorse Obama instead of following THEIR constituency? It’s like Mayor Nutter says, only the African Americans are questioned for their allegiance to Hillary…White people aren’t questioned for backing Obama, even against the wishes of THEIR constituents.

Comment by DisenfranchisedVoter | 2008-03-30 18:28:33

Ugh. I feel really bad for the Hillary’s African-American supporters. I commend them for their courage to stand behind someone they truly believe in but they are really putting their political careers on the line for her. It sucks that their constituents cannot respect their decision to support Clinton. Would they like it if MA voters, in a state that went to Clinton, booed Kennedy or Patrick for supporting Obama? It is disrespectful.

Comment by Gregoryp | 2008-03-30 22:42:08

I agree. These people are profiles in courage that is for sure. Jesse Jackson Jr. and Obama sure did open a can of worms. The real tragedy is that of the two candidates Hillary would do far more for the African American community. We know what Obama gets done for them. Not a damned thing except misery and despair.

Comment by Nan | 2008-03-30 18:58:30

I just fired off a letter to John Dean. These Obama supporters are not the Democratic Party I want to be a part of. If Dean wants to protect their voices, while not listening to the voices of Florida and Michigan voters, then, where is this Democratic Party headed? It’s headed to defeat. The DNC elite seem to be only listening to the voices of one group of people, the Obomabots. They seem to think that their vote matters more than mine. I do not want to retaliate in such a rude and obnoxious manner as them, by shouting down, a good and fairly elected official, but I will not go quietly into the night. I am letting a lot of higher-up Democrats know, that they will lose a lot of Dems (I have been voting Dem for 36 years), if they do not wake-up and tell these people to cool it, and to start paying attention to the people who have been the backbone of the Democratic Party for years. We need to keep contacting all the Democratic officials, and let them know that they cannot win November without us.

Comment by Molly | 2008-03-30 19:17:21

Nan,
I have already done the same along with dozens of women I know. There is a movement on the net to let John Dean know that we are no longer going to be Democrats, particularly if Florida and Michigan continued to be blocked by Obama from revoting. His two Mich State senator friends were grinning like Chesire cats on the news. These two cochairs succeeded in keeping the revote from occurring. One of them even said, “It’s good to be in the lead”. These people should be indicted for fixing an election.

As for me, I am leaving the Democratic party one way or another now that I know that a candidate and his surrogates can pull all the sexist tricks, get a free pass to a nomination, and be perfectly at home in the Democratic party.

I urge you to encourage every disgusted person you know to write to John Dean and staple notes on any mailings looking for money, along with a Zero in the contribution field. Also collect all the filthy remarks to women that the omabazoids type with shocking regularity on the net and send them to him like I did.

These people are truly savages, drunk with the drug of a faux messiah who is ironically nothing more than a savvy Chicago politician. They crave blood in the street and it shows. They have chosen to worship a false god who bears friendships with infamous domestic bombers and PLO members. More frightening, he has cast a spell upon the young and foolish with concerts and rallies, whereupon he has literally stepfordized them with hatred.

So insiduous is this campaign that they managed to block two states from revoting to retain his lead, however faux because of it.

This man’s nomination would be a very frightening and deadly time for America up until the time that so many of us vote with huge force for John McCain. From Italians to women, the offenses and free passes have been inexcusable among this mad crowd and the only way they will be quelled is a vote against their deliberate catalyst on the biblical and very frightening White Horse of Conquest.

Till then, it is best to avoid them for they want the rest of us dead.
I applaud this congresswoman for her courage and hope she has adequate security.

Comment by cynthia | 2008-03-30 19:35:35

This is not America that I know, where people can have different opinions and beliefs and not be bullied, intimidated, pressured by people whose positions are different.

The Democratic party under the leadership of Dean and the Obamabots is heading for the road of self- destruction. With this type of behaviors (Reminds me of those sports Holligans that go around causing destruction to everything once their home team lost), I fear the worst for the big cities with high concentration of Obamabots if he was to lose the nomination to Hillary.

I used to have respect for the Senator, I even liked him. I was hoping that he would consider to be the VP under Hillary so he can be ready to be a president after her terms are done. What a naive thought -NOW NO MORE

I used to think that Michelle mispoke about ” The first time in my… I ‘m proud to be..”. Now I think she actually believes it. She has been attending the church that teaches hatred to America and White people.

Thank you Sheila for being so courageous, as MLK had said he wished someday that people are judged not by the color of their skin by the content of their characters. Sheila, you have praticed what MLK has taught us. THANK YOU SHEILA

Yes, but the real problem — and I’ve posted my opinion on this before — is that Obama himself needs to speak directly to his constituents and demand of them that the be humble and accepting of the near 50% of the Democratic party that supports Senator Clinton.

For a man that campaigns on the theme of Hope and Change, he sure does very little to calm the divide that is growing between his camp and Senator Clinton’s camp.

How many times have we heard Clinton say publicly our party will be unified by the GE? How many times has Obama stated anything similar? I rest my point.

The Obama supporters have already threatened violence at the Convetion, unfortunately. They’ve decided that the nomination is already his (they decided this last month) and have blogged and commented alll over the internet that they have plans to become violent if Hillary “steals” it.

They are ill. The moment I knew that I would never, ever, consider Obama was after New Hampshire when his supporters went nuts screaming that Hillary STOLE New Hampshire.

It’s a cult. It’s a freakin’ cult. End of Story. The DNC are so afraid of pissing off his voting bloc that they are willing to lose their bread and butter voters to the GOP or Independent. If they succeed in pushing OBama on us, you will see a resurgence of a real Independent PARTY, not just a handful of candidates. This may very well be the end of the two-party monopoly (or is that biopoly?)

Didn’t we have this same kind of thing with the Supreme Court in 2000 when Scalia said something to the effect that the election was Bush’s? Am I recalling this correctly?

We are descending into a very undemocratic abyss. This Obama nonsense is an extension of the BushCo politics, only now the Democrats are using these strong arm tactics to bully Hillary and her supporters. They can go to hell for all I care because I will continue to give money to her campaign and WILL NEVER vote for that Obama thug person. There is no sense staying in a party that holds its own members up to contempt and tries to blackmail and destroy a viable, brilliant candidate. They, for some unknown reason to all of us, have decided that Obama and the far left, anti-American Rev Wrong followers are more important than the rest of moderates. Fuck them!

I write to Howard Dean every day. Along with Donna Brazelle and Nancy Pelosi.I think we all need to flood their in boxes with our opinions as often as we can. This woman will never ever vote for the Golden Boy. Not because of his color, I wouldn’t care if he was polka dotted. It is because he has so little experience and he is not at all prepared to be President of this great country. He feels he is entitled and Clinton should just step aside and let him be crowned. He thought it would be a piece of cake to knock the little woman out and never knew she would be so tough and he would have to work so hard. He has his little thugs to strong arm the Clinton voters at the caucuses and wins red states that will never go blue in the General and that he most likely would not have won if they were primary states and he could not game them. He whines and demands apologies from Clinton over ridiculous imaginary slights and just out right lies. He is the biggest baby that I have ever seen. He is never called on his blatant lies and his questionable razor thin resume and his ties to his Kenyan cousin and his slum lord friend and benefactor Rezko. He is disenfranchising two very important Democratic states that we will need to win in November. He is telling these people that their votes will only count if they don’t affect his total lead and only after he is declared the primary winner. He is determined to win the nomination at any cost and does not care about ruining the Democratic Party in the process. He has been given every advantage with the most glowing and fawning media support of any person I have ever seen and even after out spending Clinton three and four to one still can’t close the deal. How the heck is he going to win against McCain and the Repubs? They will swift boat him worse than Kerry. If Clinton is not at the top of the ticket I will hold my nose and vote for McCain.I could never vote for a person that has sat in a pew for twenty years at such a gross, American hating church and called it’s pastor his mentor and refuses to denounce him and find another place to worship. He never once apologized to the Clinton’s for what his pastor said about them. If Clinton or McCain had went to such a church that long they would have been hounded out of the race and probably the Senate but the Chosen One gets a free pass. I do feel bad for all the AA voters that he has used to his advantage and will likely discard if he wins this thing.I believe he has done lasting damage to the civil rights gains that we had achieved in this country. He has set race relations back fifty years and I will never forgive him for painting the Clintons and Ferraro as racists while the Democratic elders never opened their mouths about it.I have been a Democrat all my life but I will re register as an Indy if this man is chosen by the SD’s. It is so obvious that this is what they want and it is so sad to admit that this is not my party any more.

This video reminds me of my local caucus. Except I’m not a politican with a thick skin and a lot of experience speaking in front of hostile mobs. I literally dread going to my county convention. But I’ll be there, come hell or high water.

That’s it folks - The Unity crowd in action. Pure hatred and disrespect to a noble democratic congresswoman. “we shall purge the party of the nonbelievers”.
that’s who these people are. they’re nuts and I’m ashamed of my party.

I love shila Jackson-Lee!!! She is great! She is strong and smart and dedicated!!!! I hope her support for Hillary is unwaivering. She is a strong Texas woman. She didn’t seem to be moved by the sreaming. Go Hillary!!! Go Shila Jackson-Lee!!!!

Comment by Catriley | 2008-03-30 22:41:21

Screw Obama and his supporters (aka thugs.) They “gamed” the caucuses, and bullied, and cheated their way through Texas.

How odd that Kerry and Kennedy have not been Booed by their constituents, considering Hillary took their State handily.

I’m sick of the thugs and the rude assholes associated with Obama. they think they can just strongarm their way into the nomination. He can only seem to win in caucus states because they are ripe for thuggery and cheating.

Comment by Sandy | 2008-03-30 22:53:52

When did Barack arrange with his supporters to react to Sheila Jackson attempts to speak about Hillary? Are we saying this was planned by him. Take your meds please if you believe this.

Comment by salo | 2008-03-31 00:53:54

Tell you what the video is showing that Obama’s followers are doing it all by themselves.

Which is actually more trouble than you’d think.

At some point it’ll reach pandemonium. And he won’t be able to control the unleashed beast.

Comment by Jess Wonderin | 2008-03-31 03:13:23

Actually it’s the “spontaneous” reaction manifested by these cult members that is scary - the pack mentality at work flexing the mussel of ignorance and intolerance . . . it is the assumption of right without thought. Shelia is no Bush and her lifetime contribution to PEOPLE”S rights cannot be ignored. The crowd reaction is shameful and tells volumes about the Jackson Jr approach to the New America.

It would be a powerful statement if enough people would exit the Democratic Party on the same day. Anyone want to start a movement?

Comment by mimi | 2008-03-31 00:40:05

Well, I’m doing it the day after Election Day, if Hillary doesn’t get the nomination. If I do vote for McCain, I want ot do it AS A DEMOCRAT. Just so they get the point.

Comment by loyal dem leaving party | 2008-03-31 03:23:38

hope, i agree exiting the same day. but i’m a texan and we don’t register as repub or dem or whatever. what i do plan to do is send money to mccain the day obama is nominated (which i, sadly, believe will happen). and that same day i’ll email the dnc, pelosi, et al that i have done so and that they’ve lost a 4-decade loyal dem.

love the idea of starting a movement, to ensure they clearly get the message. any ideas about how?

Comment by John | 2008-03-31 03:30:28

I have an idea - we can form a group whose core values are anti-abortion, anti-labor and pro-war. We’ll call it “The Republican Party”.

Comment by loyal dem leaving party | 2008-03-31 03:38:35

john, you misinterpret both obama and mccain (see posts on other articles). you might want to do some research.

the thrust of your comments on this and other articles seems to be that we are “silly” (your words on another post) if we prefer mccain to hillary. i beg to differ. in any event, that is what we prefer. and we are entitled to our opinion, as you are are entitled to yours. the problem with obamaites is that most of them do not believe we are entitled to our opinion. too bad, so sad. (obamaites also believe we will come around to their side and support their guy in november - they are wrong.)

To boo Congresswoman Shelia Jackson-Lee, she has been the bridge that has crossed us over in district 18, when we’ve had problems in our community Congresswoman Shelia Jackson-Lee was not only fighting for us on a local level, but a national level as well, she has even fought in the case of the Jena La case when some of the other black representatives sit on their rears and did or said nothing on our behalf, How thankless and forgetful of you, dont take my word for it the next time you walk out of your doors and stroll or drive through your district do you see any changes and promises that some of these Representatives whom we have placed in positions by our vote,to make a difference on our behalf more so than, Congresswoman Shelia Jackson Lee has, I dont think so. I’m not speaking of changes that the “The Deep Pockets Developers” have been making in our communities, but I’m speaking of other Represensatives in our district that we’ve elected to represent us because of their promises, and they have done nothing other than sit back collect as much money and a name for themselves at our expense, by now I’m sure you realize your answer is a resounding no, I hope by this wake up call that you do realize how thankless of you to boo Congresswoman Shelia Jackson-Lee, never forget the bridge that has crossed you over, because you might need this very same bridge again when you realize you’ve reached a dead end street with lies of HOPE and Change, but dont worry because unlike some of you whom has turned on her because of her presidential preference, because she knows this is your democratic right to vote for your choice, that would be like you turning and disowning your own mother because of her presidential preference not aligning with yours, so what when its all said and done we are still democrats, Congresswoman Shelia Jackson Lee will still be here using any means she deems necessary, and yes that does includes using “THE Media Isiah Carey” to fight for our rights so please my people dont ridicule her, but remember “The BRIDGE” and once again like a good mother, her preference is only representing her love for us, shes only doing what she has been doing for years and thats looking out for our best interest

Bravo, you have been the fair witness to her hard work. And yes, thank you for bringing up her work related to Jena, I forgot to mention that.

These are some divided times, and Sheila even was gracious enough to tell the audience, “I’ll wait for you”. She is truly someone that is way above me in grace and candor, and I consider her a mentor of political behavior and grace.

From the sound of some of these comments, it looks like Hillary has been very successful at totally dividing the Democratic party and ensuring its defeat this November. If Hillary was concerned about the rights of the voters in Florida and Michigan, she would have complained loudly about the decision to disenfranchise them, at the time that decision was made. Instead, she agreed that she would not campaign in these states and clearly indicated that she understood their votes would not count. Now, after she has won in basically uncontested primaries, she wants to count the votes as they are. That tells me enough about her character to ensure that I won’t be voting for her under any circumstance, even if she is the Democratic nominee.

People like me have already decided to divorce ourselves from the Democratic party and you can thank Mrs. Clinton for that (along with her racist supporters who try to cast people who’ve committed themselves to the democratic process - delegates to a district convention - as crazy rioters and cult members. I too am a life-long Democrat, who can’t stomach the idea of staying committed to a party comprised of people with these retrograde attitudes.

And as for “poor” Jackson-Lee, if your constituents tell you they want you to do one thing, and you decide arrogantly to go against their wishes, they certainly have every right to vote you out of office if they want to. I think the booing is really aimed at giving her a chance to correct her decision before its too late.

Understand this people: I don’t question your right as individuals to support Hillary Clinton and I won’t call you names because of that support. But I do believe that constituents always have the right to let the people that they elect, know what’s on their minds and I will always come down on their side in matters like this. This also means that I would fully support the constituents of Ted Kennedy urging him to support their wishes, even though I’m an Obama supporter. This disregard for the electorate is one of the most vexing qualities of the current president to me and I will never support a candidate who displays such arrogance.

Sheila Jackson Lee is a heroine, not just in her current stance against the cult-mob mentality of Barack Hussein supporters, but for the works she has done in the past, some of it for God Himself.

And Noquartersusa is clearly too. Save the US and the world from evil. This is a international emergency, whether he wins or not.

Only look to Obama’s Kenyan cousin, apparently the son of his father’s sister, to see what fanatics encouraged by a cult leader can do if they lose. And that’s the good news in the event that he loses. If he wins, I can’t even begin to imagine the future this deceitful false and evil messenger will bring.

I finished the second episode of a new mini-series on TV tonight called The Trojan Horse. It was the best movie I’ve seen in years. You might want to see it since Obama is also such a trojan horse.

Comment by chris | 2008-04-07 03:55:22

Yes, repeatedly I’ve referred to him as the Trojan Horse candidate, it seems appropriate

Comment by Judy Livingston | 2008-04-21 19:48:16

In addition to The Trojan Horse, how about The Manchurian Candidate? Sheila Jackson Lee has represented her district very well. She’s smart and not a total smart ass like Obama. She’s got enough snap to be able to make up her own mind and not follow the crowd like most of the politicians. The men have made this mess (namely Bubba”Dumb Butt”Bush),so why not let women straighten out the mess. Personally, I don’t see why Jackson-Lee wouldn’t make a goof VP, if she wanted it. She’s black, she’s smart, she’s a Texan and she’s experienced. Unlike Obama.
And guess what? I’m a white senior citizen!!

Comment by Judy Livingston | 2008-04-21 19:51:47

Excuse my typo. She would make a GOOD VP, not a goof VP.

Barack Obama is dangerous. He whips people into a rabid frenzy with no idea of the consequences. Do we really want our nation to turn into some of what we see going on a
