Jersey Girl Takes on Obama Over 9/11 Comment
By Alegre on April 5, 2008 at 4:51 PM in 9/11, Al Qaeda, Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, Bush/Cheney, Hillary Clinton, Rice
I’m married with children, and I’m a pro-choice, tree-huggin, Million Mom Marchin’, yellow-dog-Democrat :: my e-mail address is HillarysBloggers@yahoo.com
I was at my desk in Washington, D.C. the morning of 9/11 — watched the Pentagon burn from the rooftop of our building — labored over whether hubby and I should pack up the car and get us and our infant daughter out of the city. I also watched as our city turned into a ghost town at night for the next 7 or 8 months, got used to the sound of F-16s criss-crossing our skies at regular intervals, and listened as the news readers explained how to tape up a safe room and put together grab and go bags.
My friends who worked in the Pentagon were lucky that day — they worked in another corner of the building. But I’ll never forget the pregnant wife of a guy named Eddie who sat vigil on a hillside near the smoldering corner that did get hit. She refused to leave until he was found (hopefully alive) and the news talked with her one evening. My heart ached for her and her 3 kids. Thousands of families went through what she endured and the Jersey Girls made news when they fought for an honest investigation into what happened that day.
Kristen Breitweiser is one of those women. She and her friends used their loss and grief — channeled into a force for the truth and spent more time here in DC than many members of Congress. They earned the respect of a lot of us and when one of them has something to say — I listen.
Well Ms. Breitweiser posted something in the Huffington Post today that caught my attention. She was surprised to hear that Obama and Rice have something in common. Neither thinks anyone could have predicted what happened on 9/11. Take a look…
Kristen Breitweiser
9/11: Where Barack Obama and Condi Rice Sound Alarmingly Alike
Barack Obama appeared on MSNBC’s Hardball last night and was asked about the way he would handle the 3 a.m. phone call.
The transcript:
MATTHEWS: Let me give you a scene that may face you in the next year or two, where the national security adviser calls you at 3:00 in the morning and tells that you a couple of jet — commercial jets have been hijacked. And they believe it is al Qaeda. And, as we know, al Qaeda always tries a second time. They tried for the World Trade Center after ‘93. They came back in ‘01.
They’re heading for the Capitol. What do you do?
OBAMA: Well, look, I am hesitant to engage in hypotheticals like that, because…
MATTHEWS: But it has been predictable.
OBAMA: Oh, well, the–I don’t think anybody predicted 9/11. And, so, we don’t know what kinds of circumstances are going to come up.
Yup. That’s right, Barack Obama glibly stated that he didn’t “think anybody predicted 9/11.”
Perhaps Obama might better strengthen his image of having a handle on national security issues by not sounding so much like the disgraceful, incompetent former Bush Administration National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice.
Recall that Ms. Rice stated that “I don’t think anybody could have predicted that these people would take an airplane and slam it into the World Trade Center, take another one and slam it into the Pentagon; that they would try to use an airplane as a missile, a hijacked airplane as a missile.”
I am not even going to bother listing the hundreds of cites/articles/studies/reports/military exercises, drills/testimonials/PDB’s/SEIB’s or even television shows that disprove Rice’s statement. I will just mention my personal favorite — the August 6, 2001 Presidential Daily Briefing titled, “Bin Laden Determined to Strike in the U.S.”
How could Obama have such a poor understanding of the 9/11 attacks and their subsequent impact on the US intelligence community? Has Obama even read the 9/11 Commission’s Final Report that (even in its whitewash form) calls Rice to task for her “misleading” statement about the predictability of 9/11-style attacks? Or sets forth recommendations for intelligence community reforms?
One of the reasons I support Hillary Clinton over Barack Obama is because of the enormous help Senator Clinton gave to the 9/11 families who were fighting to create a 9/11 Commission.
My experience in Washington showed me that there were very few people who understood what needed to be done and even fewer people who had the courage, stamina, and ability to get those things done.
Hillary Clinton was one of those people. And without fail, anytime we needed help — whether that was achieving bi-partisan consensus, strong-arming the White House and/or House Republicans, or cajoling reluctant and recalcitrant Democrats like Lieberman, Senator Clinton always took the call and helped solve the problem.
I might add that for someone whose husband, former President Bill Clinton, was a point of investigation for the 9/11 Commission, it certainly did not play in Senator Clinton’s favor to have something like the 9/11 Commission impaneled. Yet, Senator Clinton was one of our biggest, fiercest, and most vocal advocates for the creation of a 9/11 Commission.
But as a 9/11 widow who, along with other 9/11 families, fought very hard to learn lessons from 9/11 to not only make our nation safer but also to hold people like Condoleezza Rice accountable, it is wholly unacceptable for any presidential candidate to get such a simple, historical fact about national security — that the 9/11 attacks were predictable — so totally wrong.
(Emphasis added)
Now I’ve lived in the DC area for nearly 24 years and this is the only time we’ve been hit like this — hopefully the last. On the one hand you realize this is probably one of the most protected cities in the country (well aside from the port up there in Baltimore but I won’t go into that now (Hillary did work with a group to address port safety btw)), but on the other you kind of have this nagging worry at the back of your head that you live in a city with one big-ass bulls-eye over it.
I glad the Jersey girls demanded some answers. I’d like to think that some of the recommendations of the 9/11 Commission report — as watered down as that report may be — have been implemented.
Going forward, I want someone to take over from Bush’s miserable failure of a watch and be ready to deal with whatever comes her way. Someone who understands that yes — the tragic events of 9/11 were predictable and could have been prevented if only Bush and company had been paying attention!
Now I know we can’t change history and undo what the terrorists did to Kristen’s husband and thousands of other innocent people that day — but we can sure as hell elect someone who knows what they’re doing and can think on her feet like no one else.

Wonderful post, and you are right, we do not want someone in the White House who doesn’t know what they are doing. God help use all if this happens again. I hope Howard Dean realizes this…..Hillary knows what she is talking about and does not answer with just words.
Reading a few of these comments, it seems few people are aware of the truth about 9/11. Is it in the Commission’s report? The one directed by the guy in Bush’s pocket? You’ll find very little truth in there.
Instead, do yourself a favor and watch a couple documentaries put together by real people like you and me, who got the real facts together through investigation. just do a google search for: “loose change” and “zeitgeist”. i believe they are both on youtube. people don’t have time to collect and read a bunch of info, so some real patriots put their talents to good use making these doc’s for us to see/listen to.
You should always research anything you hear, especially from the money-controlled mass media. Be wary of the tube folks, and ignore the fear they try to teach you and your kids. Your neighborhood’s not really out to get you!
Proof about the media? In USA today recently, they did an article (front page, of course) about a guy who is going to trial for the 9/11 attacks after confessing. I URGE you to research that, do searches for truth. You will find how totally f’d up that situation is. I’d confess to anything if it would make the torture stop…
Today, our voices and this internet are our most powerful weapons.

More and more, I’m convinced that Bush will leave the White House on January 20, Obama will move in- and it will be as if absolutely nothing has changed. One clueless, open right-wing corporatist who wants to keep tens of thousands of troops in Iraq indefinitely replaced by one clueless, closet right-wing corporatist who wants to keep tens of thousands of troops in Iraq indefinitely. Reformer With Results makes way for Change You Can Believe in.
The more things change….

Yes. Kristen and the Jersey Girls have earned the respect and admiration of many!
I read her post on Huffington and I was absolutely horrified at the vile comments being made by people who obviously didn’t have a clue as to WHO she was or WHY her input had such significance.
The Jersey Girls are true heroes. In the midst of personal tragedy and loss, they pushed onward with courage and dedication in search of truth. I wish them peace.
Thanks for posting this, Alegre.
Yes, Alegre, great post.
I hope bloggers, and others, never let up on 9.11, ever until someone is brought to justice, if only for gross negligence.
Bush had warning, he chose, for whatever reason, to ignore it.
Another president would have acted, as Bill Clinton did, in Seattle, in 1999, and prevented those attacks, sparing the nation so much unnecessary trauma, and grief.
IMO, 9.11 was preventable.
It’s called competent, intelligent PRESIDENTIAL management.
I agree with you that it may have been preventable. After reading Richard Clarke’s excellent book and the report from the 9/11 Commission it seems clear that there were many signs pointing to what took place. I am not so foolish as to believe that fine people didn’t do their job. But there did seem to be an attitude in the way the Administration prioritized what was and what was not important that surely led to the mistakes that were made.
More than anything I think that your diary demonstrates that Obama doesn’t have the intuitive curiosity necessary to be an effective Commander in Chief. He parrots talking points of Condoleezza Rice for christsakes. A person he voted to confirm because she is black.
My issue is with the August PDB.
Given the urgency of that memo, and the fact not only Tenet, but others, felt it so critical they spoke to Bush personally (and we know what it means when the big boss uncharacteristically speaks to us, in person, it’s urgent), how could Bush not take action?
And why do we excuse it?
Our intelligence did not fail, Bush and Cheney did, why have we allowed them to get away with it?
FWIW, imagine the director of the CIA coming to you, (you’re the President), and saying “we have an urgent situation, proof, the nation needs to go on high alert, Al Qaeda will attack” and the President says “nice to know, I’ll pass it on” and then doesn’t?”
THAT is criminal.
It is difficult to imagine, much less believe, that anyone would purposely ignore a direct threat as it appears our current POTUS and members of his administration did with 9-11.
But the facts are hard to dispute. They knew. Some may call that incompetence but I say that is too kind.
Do I believe Bush would allow 9-11 to happen in order to start a war? Yes. I do. I think it is possible for some men to think that the sacrifice of a few to save the many is as powerful a reason as it is an excuse. And here I don’t suggest he was saving us from WMDs. These guys were seriously playing a real life game of “Risk.” Whether Hussain’s looming threat to give up the dollar for euros or the strategic oil middle east positioning, these right wing nutjobs thought it would lead to world domination.
They are all to happy to have us think them stupid. As with Katrina.
The money, and the power, and the ego are things we cannot really understand, unless we are mentally ill, and from that class of wealth.
I made the comment once, after Cheney shot Harry, that when Dick and his friends get together drinking, and speak of world domination, they aren’t kidding.
Cheney isn’t Kennedy, and Bush isn’t Clinton.
And both benefited from Madison Ave selling tactics, the same as they’re doing with Obama, a whitewash of character, and failure, real intent.
This is a very important article. This lady knows what she’s talking about . I’m glad to hear from one of the Jersey Girls on this.
9/11 was Hillary’s Katrina so to speak and EVERYONE says she came though hugely. Hillary has proven herself over and over. I pray we are luck enough as a nation to have her in the White House
allegre,
i work for united airlines. we send our families on planes everyday, many knew people on those united flts.
kristen is amazing…
everday we work at airports and planes and still fear, for the future… especially at airports where someone with a vest strapped on, can easily walk on the propery.
HILLARY, has the respect of the world, she has friendships that are strong…
she has experience in the white house..
if its her or obama? i choose hill…
I am so sorry you and your friends and neighbors had to experience what to me was a totally preventable attack.
Under Bill Clinton, the issue of terrorism, such as it is, was held in check.
With intelligent TOUGH executive management, again, this will hopefully never again be an issue for Americans, really, it’s almost inconceivable anyone was able to penetrate American defense in the manner the hijackers did.
That’s political.
Jesus fucking Christ that guy is so fucking DUMB. He’s not even a good talker. He’s so STUPID. A DUNCE. MIGOD this is a DISASTER.
LOL You gotta learn to express yourself Kourian. Stop holding back.
Alegre, thanks so much.
Obama must be the only person left in the country who can read who doesn’t know that the White House was warned.
Uppity,
I don’t think he really cares. I’m serious.
Actually that’s not true.
None of his supporters know either.
I was just reading comments to this diary on MyDD. Speaking of low information voters.
I had decided not to post on those blogs because I hate arguing with people who are dumb and want to remain ignorant. But I am now thinking it might be very important for some of us to “patrol” these sites - not to troll or hassle, as Obamabots do, but to inform those who are too young, busy, or innocent to question this guy. Maybe a few of them can be reached. It’s for their own good. And of course for ours and the rest of the world’s.
The job of medieval friars required much patients and grog. To journey in the valleys you describe, one must fear no evil.
Obama’s response indicates a chilling ignorance re: what was known before 9/11 and how little was done to counter the attacks. All of us have seen the video of the hijackers walking through the airport and never being stopped or questioned-and we watched knowing the outcome-they were going to board a plane and use it as a missle to bring down part of the World Trade Center. It is fixed in our memory. We watched the investigation, heard the evasions, learned the entire event could have been prevented. How could Obama not know the attacks could have been prevented? What level of hubris allows Obama to believe he should be president?
Oh no he didn’t!
Obama: “Well, look, I am hesitant to engage in hypotheticals…”
Doesn’t engage in hypotheticals???? What does he call his stance on the war?????
Oh my God! Where are the good journalists, anymore? The ones who ask tough follow-up questions???
This is a nightmare!
Why is he getting away with everything????
it’s pretty simple : het some planes up next to the jet, evacuate sensitive targets in the locale. Blow the planes out of the air if they look like they are ging to ram anything.
Can you say that on TV?
I recall a debate moment when he said his job as president “will not be to run some bureaucracy. It’s to set a vision.”
Yes he is the vision guy just like bush.
I just came back here after reading the entire article that Kristen wrote and most of the comments by the readers are as usual, that anyone that mentions support for Hillary, is writing this to make
Obama look bad. I have been saying for years that if Bush shot a man in front of 20 of his supporters, that they would claim the gun fired itself and I think we are seeing the same scenario with Obama supporters. One woman said that Obama is not a policy wonk like Clinton but a bit picture
person and it’s silly to ask him some specific
question like this…..really. What do we ask him
then….are are you today, where did you buy your suit?
A big picture person? Does this sad little Obamapologist not understand that what happened on 9/11 was a PRETTY DAMN BIG PICTURE!
It is all fine and dandy to support your candidate. You may even be willing to excuse a thing or two that you are not completely comfortable about, but for God’s sake is it really necessary to park you damn brains at the door?
Support is one thing. Dismal, blind, brain-dead acceptance is quite another. I always thought people who called Obamapologists “cult-like” were exaggerating. Maybe not so much!
All: Isn’t it amazing how the pro-Obama people are now making this about whether or not 9/11 was predictable? Sorry — I’m not going to get distracted by that.
Obama was asked a simple, direct question. Insteat of answering it, or even asking follow-up questions to clarify and formulate his response — once again — he chose to be evasive, and not take stances on issues that matter. In short, he continues to let people project whatever they want to see in his candidacy. I find that very troubling.
If I were Matthews — I’d have come right back at him with — “but Senator, where is your vaunted judgement?” I suppose he’ll make a grand speech on Tuesday about foreign policy and how we must understand the grievances that cause such terrorism in the first place!?
Matthews loves Obama and hates Clinton. He would never ask a tough follow up of Obama.
One wall of books in my study tells me that 9/11 was ‘predict\able’. Many fine peoples’ lives were devastated in countless ways by those who intentionally ignored the intelligence priorities being generated by our intelligence agencies.
Senator Obama’s response of “Oh well..ah..,
we don’t know what kinds of circumstances are going to come up. …
is simply uninformed. Obama is in need of a telescope. What it tells me is he is politically tone deaf. To answer such a question by Chris Matthews, who served up a “gemmie”, Obama could have shown how in depth his study of the facts are.
I would say, hypothetically, that Senator Obama is not interested in understanding what sacrifices it takes to keep this nation safe. And that is who the Birkenstock wing of the Dem’s want to elect?
Thanks Algere. Another gaffe or downright stupid statement by BO added to the ever growing list.
I am shocked…SHOCKED!
If Obama really is going to make statements as ludicrous as this, America is in deep trouble if he becomes our president.

2 of those Jersey girls live in our town East Brunswick, NJ. My daughter in law was going into the 2nd building at the Trade Center when the second plane hit. She saw some unspeakable things happen to many innocent people that day. If Obama doesn’t know all the warnings before 911, he should do a little more reading and a little less campaigning first.
I live in nyc and what i find equally disturbing to obama’s comment is the msm ignoring the fact that he said it.
