Overview: This is a story of big-city behind-the-scenes politics — of scratch-my-back and I’ll-scratch-yours backroom dealings. It is a story of how Bill Ayers and Barack Obama — sitting on a charitable board (for which they were paid) — aided and abetted the lucrative real estate development projects of Obama’s former law firm associate Allison Davis and Davis’s development partner Antoin “Tony” Rezko.
The Woods board on which Ayers and Obama sat ended up giving those two development partners the sum of one million dollars, from which both Davis and Rezko reaped considerable financial gain. And Obama did not recuse himself from the board’s vote on this large real estate transaction despite a clear conflict of interest from his past associations. Obama then became the beneficiary of large — very large — campaign contributions from Rezko and many of his wealthy associates. It all worked out very well for Sen. Obama.

Bill Ayers, Obama’s friend and benefactor, was introduced to the public during Wednesday’s Democratic debate, much to the chagrin of the Obama campaign and his supporters.
Let’s get one thing out of the way: Ayers was not a radical; he is a domestic terrorist (Ayers once suggested that young people should “Bring the war home. Kill your parents.”). There’s a big distinction between having radical ideas and violent plans. Gloria Steinem, Tom Hayden, and Todd Gitlin were radicals. The desire to kill innocent Americans makes Ayers a terrorist.
Larry Johnson makes the point that:
William Ayers is not just some guy who lives in Barack’s congressional district. He helped Barack organize his run against State Senator Alice Palmer. Ayers raised money for Barack. Ayers contributed money to Barack. And Bill Ayers and Barack Obama sat side-by-side as paid board members of the Woods Fund.
Contrary to Obama’s claim that who your friends are shouldn’t matter, the fact that his benefactor is an unrepentant terrorist calls into question Obama’s judgment. If Obama were applying for a job with the FBI or any American intelligence agency, his relationship with Ayers would receive the utmost scrutiny and would likely result in him receiving a rejection letter:
The CIA employment Web site says:
Friends, family, individuals, or organizations may be interested to learn that you are an applicant for or an employee of the CIA. Their interest, however, may not be benign or in your best interest.
This is a warning for an entry level analyst position. Obama is applying to be Commander-in-Chief. Obama’s friends have included an American terrorist and Obama wants us to be believe that this relationship was benign? Not only are we entitled to ask about this relationship, it’s our fiduciary duty as voters to demand more information about this relationship.
As the National Review Online asks about Obama’s association with Ayers, only slightly tongue-in-cheek: “Do you, personally, know anyone who has ever tried to blow up the Pentagon?”
Obama’s poor judgment in picking his friends–from Wright, to Rezko, to Ayers–becomes glaringly obvious when you realize that many of Obama’s friends knew each other and were all working for each others’ benefit. Like the Teamster’s Pension Fund, the non-profit Woods Fund was place where Chicago’s powerful could mingle and dispense funds to their friends:
In Obama’s case, a whole gang of slumlords in Illinois made their “voices heard” by writing campaign checks to fund his rise to fame. But as long as the focus of the slumlord allegations remains solely on a crook named Rezko, the other members of the gang will not get the credit they deserve.
Until now…
In the mid-1990s, Ayers and Dohrn [Ayers’ wife] hosted a meet-and-greet at their house to introduce Obama to their neighbors during his first run for the Illinois Senate. In 2001, Ayers contributed $200 to Obama’s campaign. Ayers also served alongside Obama between December 1999 and December 2002 on the board of the not-for-profit Woods Fund of Chicago. That board met four times a year, and members would see each other at occasional dinners the group hosted.
Writing for the Chicago Sun Times, Tim Novak reports that Obama’s “charity” work may have equally benefited Obama and his friends. Obama and Ayers were sitting board members when their friends came looking for money:
Seven years ago, Sen. Barack Obama was on the board of a Chicago charity when his former boss, Allison S. Davis, came looking for money. At the time, Davis was a developer represented by the law firm where Obama worked, as well as a small contributor to Obama’s political campaign funds. He wanted the charity to help fund his plans to build housing for low-income Chicagoans. Obama agreed. He voted with other directors of the Woods Fund of Chicago to invest $1 million with Neighborhood Rejuvenation Partners L.P., a $17 million partnership that Davis still operates.It’s not clear whether Obama told other board members of his ties to Davis, whose family would go on to donate more than $25,000 to Obama’s political campaigns, including his bid to be president of the United States.
“Let me get back to you on that,” Obama presidential campaign spokesman Bill Burton said when asked about that two weeks ago. He never did.
In a painful contortion, the Obama campaign defended Obama’s “magnanimous” vote by claiming that
“It was a worthwhile project,” Burton said. “It’s not a conflict of interest to do what’s right for your community.”
City records show Davis used some of the money to build a 72-unit apartment building for senior citizens at 87th and Ashland. The $10 million project — built with a $5.7 million loan from the city — netted Davis nearly $700,000 in development fees, city records show.
Perhaps the biggest revelation is that Obama’s buddy Rezko was a business partner with Davis.
As a developer, Davis’ partners have included Tony Rezko, the now-indicted political fund-raiser who has been among Obama’s biggest political supporters. A few months after Davis left the law firm, Obama won his first political office — a seat in the Illinois Senate. His campaign contributors included Rezko and Davis.
Two years later, Obama wrote to city and state officials, urging them to give money to New Kenwood LLC, a company that Davis and Rezko formed to build an apartment building for low-income seniors at 48th and Cottage Grove.
Davis and Rezko were building that project in 2000 when Davis approached the Woods Fund, seeking its investment in future projects.
In summary, Obama was at the intersection of money and power in Chicago politics. He voted to fund his boss’s projects who in turn donated huge sums of money to his campaigns. His boss was in business with Tony Rezko, another Obama friend and fundraiser. And all of this was done while sitting across the table from an American terrorist, Bill Ayers, who also gave money to Obama’s campaigns and to the business ventures of Rezko and Davis. It’s now painfully obvious why Obama doesn’t want us to examine his friendships.

Cabinet appointees to an adminstration are vetted by the senate. What makes these Rezko, Rev Wright and Ayers relationships troubling and why it is important that the media vettes them is the advice a president receives from his friends and confidants is sometimes the most important advice he receives. We trust the advise from a friend before we trust the advice of a colleague. When a person surrounds himself with people with less than stellar reputation we have to wonder what he is hearing and is it in our best interest. When a candidate surrounds himself with lobbyist alarm bells go off because of questions of what is in the best interest of the public. When a candidate surrounds himself with people of extreme political position or balent self interest these same alarm belts should go off.
Obama has not shown he has sufficiently distant himself from these people and additionally what other kind of people is he surrounding himself in his kitchen cabinet.
You’re right. I’ve had a brother and a son go through top security clearance and there wasn’t anything left uncovered. All of their previous employers were interviewed as well as their college professors. Every member of the family, including far-flung cousins, were investigated and my brother still claims his clearance was held up because his sister (me) marched in the Viet Nam war protests. So this disregard for Obama’s “missing pieces” of personal history are either because he hasn’t been investigated, or he has and the Republicans who ordered it aren’t talking (yet), or everyone who wiped his records clean has been paid off. None of which are reassuring.
I’ve even read of people who have worked in high level intelligence saying there is simply no more privacy, period, the information they deal with is so sensitive.
So imagine how that plays for Obama.

I agree with Uppity here (as usual) that saying that Obama used “poor judgment” gives him too much credit. (Although Bud may be saying it tongue-in-cheek).
Obama has developed and exploited these relationships intentionally. That’s the part that most scares me. His political assent is calculated. And given who he is and what he’s done (nothing) you don’t have to be a PhD (although I am) to figure out he’s as crooked as those with whom he associates.
Obama is much worse than the Chicago sleaze machine from which his corrupt ass found a home. I think he has achieved whatever security clearance he has as well as his pass to enter into politics by the crooked wheelings and dealings of some political figures high up enough to make it happen.
Now he is in their debt and whatever plans they have for him, he will be obligated to carry out. And what better way to support him than to draft a mob of child-like worshippers who lack the ability or the desire to think critically. No doubt Ayers has been very helpful there.

We choose people we share commonalities with; we choose friends because we want their company, their opinions, their support. Obama chooses to spend his time with disreputable people and he needs to be accountable. If he wants us to believe he has good judgement, Obama must demonstrate something other than friendships with known terrorists.
I can recall that back in the 70’s a friend of mine needed security clearance to work on a nuclear submarine as a pipefitter and because of that many of his friends/family were interviewed by men in black suits. Fortunately for him there were no worrisome associations. But, my puzzlement is why the big investigation for a pipefitter as opposed to a contender for POTUS.
Where are the trolls, stark contrast between this serious topic and the middle finger fiasco (not minimizing it) I find it interesting. I’d like to see the obamabots spin this info. Can’t do it.

This is especially true for NBC/MSNBC and Newsweek which is owned by NBC.If they can get enough people to think there is mommentum or ‘evertbodys’ doing it, they can get some more votes.

If Obama’s relationships with Rezko, Davis and Ayers get more coverage in the main stream media, he will most likely alienate enough main stream voters to become unelectable. Since he does not have an extensive resume, and has not been on the national stage for a long period of time, many voters will view these relationships as indicative of Obama’s modus operandi.
I’ve learned enough to conclude that he played the games that needed to be played to thrive in a very corrupt environment, and would not be surprised if the Rezko trial should unearth new information (I’m not in any way suggesting he will be indicted, just that we may learn more about him than he would like us to know).
Anyone who thinks this stuff won’t matter will be unpleasantly surprised if Obama becomes the nominee. These types of questionable relationships matter, they matter to me and they will matter to enough voters to become a problem.
What is really sad, is that if Obama had waited a few years to gain more experience and allow more time to elapse from his Chicago days, he would have had a much better chance of becoming president. Empty rhetoric can only take you so far, especially when it is contradicted by your record.

This is an excellent diary Bud. Hard core factual information that spells out the relationships very plainly. Obama’s complete lack of judgment may well be historic. How possibly can anyone in their right mind not get that Obama awarding money to a crony that will in turn give money to him is not a conflict of interest? It is at least one of the most blatant cases of quid pro quo I have ever read about. It’s Case Study material. Of course stuff like that is natural in Chicago style politics.
What’s really frightening is that Obama doesn’t seem to understand why he must denounce these people.
His lame ass excuse about how he also is good friends with Sen Coburn, was really revealing. (Coburn called for the execution of abortion doctors.) Obama whined, “am I suppose to denounce him too?” Well yes you idiot, you’re a Democrat aren’t you?? I assume you also don’t advocate executing doctors?? So yes, you denounce such things, or at least sane people do.
But it was also really strange, because Obama seems to be implying that Ayers and Coburn are comparable. Obama is implying that blowing up things is the same as being a Senator who disagrees with you? What?

This Obama fellow and the revelations that you have posted about him and his semingly nefarious activities in Chicago mentioned in this blog entry are truly disturbing.
In fact, from the revelations about Mrs. Obama never being proud of her country until recently, to Obama not wearing a flag pin to commemorate 9/11, to Obama’s mentor and ex-pastor, racist, anti-semitic Jeremiah Wright, to his ‘bitter-gate’ elitist comments about small-town America, Barack Obama smells (stinks) of something really putrid and obominable. He truly stikes me as someone to be feared and be VERY concerned about.
I remember back in the Plamegate days when I would come here several times a day for Larry’s insightful commentary.

It’s really not that hard to connect the dots, here, same players, a minor cast of characters, none to smart, all involved, in one way or another with businesses thought traditionally run by the CIA, you know, cocaine, heroin, money fraud and arms smuggling.
(That, and the manufacture of finest domestic, natural fiber cotton quilts, anywhere).
Anyway, politically connected world wide, a ring of petty, lavender crooks, all functioning within a world of corruption, (and within a larger asymmetric world war waged since the end of WW2) have brought about this level of terrorism, and corrupt inept governmental officials we now see. No biggie, just crime on an international scale, to be expected given the scope of the multi national corporation. Think gangsters in the thirties, but modern day, international. They are also responsble for supplying and financing most of the terrorist groups we are now fighting. Obama and Ayers funnel money through the woods foundation to Khalidi, and Khalidi sends the money to Palestine, and Hamas, say, and there, they buy a couple of rockets from some Saudi or ex pat american dealers, and launch them on Jerusalem, for instance.

Obama is connected to this ring, through the IL combine, which serves world wide, in part to the large Arab community which has settled in Chicago, ala Rezko. Auchi is also suspected of being connected to this ring, as is Dick Cheney’s pentagon members, as mentioned by Sybil Edmonds. It all relates back to Plame, and terrorism, and attempts to control the flow of goods while reaping large amounts of cash and fufilling political ambitons, ala the Internet bubble, in the 90’s. Think Daley’s Chicago, in Washington, with the verve of Silicone Valley, during the bubble days.
Time to see things as connected, a new school of thought, leave the 20th centure behind.
