THIS bigoted sermon was the inspiration for Obama’s “Audacity of Hope”?

THESE WORDS are what inspired Barack Obama? THESE WORDS are what “jumpstarted’ his “Christian journey”? THESE WORDS are what prompted Obama to name his book The Audacity of Hope? THESE homophobic words in the fourth sentence of Rev. Wright’s sermon?

“Have the audacity to hope for that child of yours,” Wright sang out in the sermon that Obama has said jumpstarted his own Christian journey.

“Have the audacity to hope for that husband of yours. Have the audacity to hope for that home of yours. Have the audacity to hope for the homosexual of yours. Have the audacity to hope for that church of yours. Whatever it is you’ve been praying for, keep on praying, and you may find, like my grandmother sings, There’s a bright side somewhere.”

I had never seen the full context of the phrase, “the audacity of hope,” until I happened to run across those paragraphs while reading an article at NPR. I was stunned. I was speechless. And with more sadness than sarcasm, I must say that I’m sure that all of our GLBT friends and relatives want us to have the “audacity to hope for the homosexual” of ours. Good lord.

I wonder why Barack Obama hangs around so many homophobic “spiritual advisers,” like Rev. James Meeks. Rev. Meeks — who shares with Sen. Obama the distinction of receiving substantial donations from indicted, taxpayer-bilking slumlord Tony Rezko — is named by the Southern Poverty Law Center as “one of the ‘10 leading black religious voices in the anti-gay movement’.”

Sen. Obama’s affinity with homophobes may explain why he has refused to grant interviews to, or take questions from, Pennsylvania’s gay newspapers. Hillary Clinton, of course, gladly accepted the invitation from Philadelphia Gay News.

Then there is the story that Hillary told to Ellen Degeneres recently on the Ellen syndicated talk show — a touching story about the relationship between Hillary’s parents and a gay couple who were their neighbors:

::::::::::::

This is part two of the interview on Ellen, which focused on Hillary’s great efforts to fight breast cancer:

You can read all about Hillary’s ambitious plan in her press releases here:

Clinton Unveils Plan To Find Cure For Breast Cancer On The Ellen DeGeneres Show

Plan Includes $300 Million in Increased Funding For Research Annually And Increased Access To Treatment And Screening Services

::::::::::::::::::::

And here is part of the interview that Hillary granted to EPGN:

PGN: I assume that you and President Clinton have gay friends. Can you give me your impression of one of those couples that you socialize with, without giving any names?

Hillary Clinton: Oh my gosh. There are so many of them. I know that Mark [Walsh, Clinton’s national director of LGBT outreach] is on the phone. Let me say this, we don’t get to socialize a lot. But when we do, it’s usually at a big event where we get to see people and spend time with them. This is something I want to do more of as soon as I finish this presidential campaign. It’s sort of hard to pick out people. We go to some events in Washington and New York. I’ve got friends, literally, around the country that I’m close to. It’s part of my life.
PGN: How would you respond to those friends if they asked you why they can’t get married?
HC: What I say is that marriage is in the province of the state, which has actually turned out to be lucky for us, because we didn’t have to get beaten on the Federal Marriage Amendment because we could make, among other arguments, that it was such a stretch for the federal government and it was wrong to enshrine discrimination in the Constitution. And that states are really beginning seriously to deal with the whole range of options, including marriage, both under their own state constitutions and under the legislative approach.

I anticipate that there will be a very concerted amount of effort in the next couple of years that will move this important issue forward and different states will take different approaches as they did with marriage over many years and you will see an evolution over time.

PGN: What will you do to improve the immigration policy for same-sex couples?

HC: I think that that’s one of the biggest problems that we’ve got to contend with. Even states that have civil unions, domestic partnerships or even marriage laws are running into roadblocks with the federal government when it comes to federal benefits and privileges. Of course, immigration is a federal responsibility and I am going to do everything I can to eliminate any disparities in any benefits or rights under our law at the federal level so that all people will have available to them every right as an American citizen that they should, and that would include immigration law.

PGN: What changes would you make toward governments that execute gay people, such as Iran, Egypt and Iraq and numerous other countries in the Middle East and Africa? Will you offer political asylum?

HC: I would be very strongly outspoken about this and it would be part of American foreign policy. There are a number of gross human-rights abuses that countries engage in with whom we have relations and we have to be really vigilant and outspoken in our total repudiation of those kinds of actions and do everything we can, including using our leverage on matters such as aid, to change the behavior so we can try to prevent such atrocities from happening. … Read all.

In the meantime, Barack Obama dodges and weaves every question about his 20-year relationship with his homophobic pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright — as well as his long relationships with other homophobic “spiritual” advisers.

And he keeps his homophobic friends happy by avoiding interviews and contact with the gay media.

I support the others here. Fuck you. I don’t even mean that in a nice way as I usually do. But you are dirt. Dirt. No more.

I just got through seeing the LA Times coverage of your fabulous leader with his wayward finger and his cocky grin and I have this message for you to give him.

Mr Obama you little piece of shit,

Up to now you had people seeing through you and laughing at you but now your twelve year old behaviour has gone too far. You need a bitch slap, you little worthless runt, and if I see you I will bitch slap you so hard you will cry and beg for a typical white person to comfort you and take away your pain.

You are a disgrace to the United States of America, Obama. You are a disgrace to good honest decent black people everywhere. You are a disgrace to the entire fucking human race.

I believe in poetic justice. I believe karma always has its say in the end. I cannot begin to conceive what poetic karma whack will hit you but I can promise you I will celebrate with the rest of humanity on that day.

Eat shit and die, Barack Hussein Obama. I have never used that expression outright because I think it is too extreme. It is going too far. But you are the vilest thing that has come along anywhere in any context in a long time and one way or another you will be stopped. And I will see that day. And when it comes - when we all hear of your disgrace and demise, no matter how long it takes, we shall raise our glasses and toast the good in humanity you fought so hard to oppress.

Eat shit and die. Take big mouthfuls. Start eating now.

OK boy - now you take that to your leader. He may give you a tip for your trouble. Sleep well.

Apparently the kind that Obama let’s baptize his children.

Bill Clinton didn’t sit in a pew for 20 years, listening to Rev. Wright’s hate-America speech without objecting.

As far as we know, Clinton only met Rev. Wright that one time, and it was at a gathering of many ministers. To consider it equivalent to Obama’s close relationship with the Rev. is ludicrous.

Comment by deke | 2008-04-19 21:23:44

It was your posting that brought on that response and I agree it was uncalled for but you still haven’t make a cognitive response here. So Bill had his picture taken with Wright. And?

Comment by Beelzebud | 2008-04-19 21:26:04

The point is that the Clinton’s never had a problem with Wright.

But I guess if Sean Hannity or Bill O’Rielly has a problem with him, then thats good enough for you.

Comment by deke | 2008-04-19 21:40:15

I suppose you know have insight into Bill Clinton’s head. I guess he was there because someone recommended he be there. The evidence is Clinton didn’t know who he was. Besides your whole argument is a false equivalency.
What you are saying is because in 1939 the prime minister of England had his picture taken with Adolf Hitler, therefore the Prime Minister of England was a Nazi.

Comment by Beelzebud | 2008-04-19 21:45:02

Did the prime minister of England send Hitler a thank you note that read like this:

Dear Pastor Wright:

Thank you so much for your kind message.
I am touched by your prayers and by the many expressions of encouragement and support I have received from friends across our country.

You have my best wishes.

Sincerely,
Bill Clinton

So even though Clinton may not know Rev Wright personally, the White House evidently thought well enough of the man to invite him to the forgiveness breakfast

Sorry but the preacher who counseled Bill was actually Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr. By the way, not long after he was offering Bill Clinton spiritual counseling, it came to light that the dear old Rev. Jackson had a “baby mama”. She had worked for his coalition and he used $250,000 to pay her off for all intents and purposes. He has an illegitimate daughter who is now in her very early teens. This may also explain why the dear old Rev. Jackson’s wife, unlike Rev Jackson and his namesake son Jesse Jackson Jr., is a very strong Hillary Clinton supporter.

Comment by Eurogirl70 | 2008-04-19 21:57:22

By the way, Beelzebud, I wonder if Michelle Obama feels that women like Coretta Scott King and Mrs. Jackson should be allowed to participate in the political process at all. If you will recall, dear old Michelle said that Hillary “couldn’t keep her own house in order, so how could she be expected to keep the White House in order.” Well, there have been numerous women, Eleanor Roosevelt, Jacqueline Kennedy, Ladybird Johnson, Coretta Scott King, and Mrs. Jackson who all had filandering husbands. They all accomplished great things, and were great assets and inspirations to this country.

If you would even look at the picture of Bill Clinton with Rev. Wright you would notice that he is not even looking at him. The dear old Rev. is staring up at Bill while BIll is looking off at an angle at something that has his attention.

Having your picture with someone does not mean that you know them or that they know you. Until you can produce evidence that Bill Clinton, like Obama, was offering up tithing monies to the tune of $20,000 and was a member of the church, shut the fuck up!!

Comment by TeakWoodKite | 2008-04-19 23:00:52

But hey, what is 7k compared to a house for BO and a house for Wright, or Obama making toasts to Auchi at Rezko’s house.

I am sorry but you have to explain to me what point you are trying to make in support of your candidate.

Comment by Beelzebud | 2008-04-19 21:37:59

What sounds Republican is using Fox News to smear a Democrat’s preacher. The point I am making is that Bill Clinton never had a problem with Wright. The right-wing has a problem with him. Fox News has a problem with him.

Richard Mellon Scaife. you mean the guy Hillary had a meeting with a few weeks back?

Comment by deke | 2008-04-19 22:14:44

I suppose you know for a fact that the Clinton Campaign has told Fox News to smear Obama preacher. Fox News I guess has never smeared Clinton.
I you know whats in side Bill Clinton’s brain and have inside information that they approved of Rev Wright. And if Fox News reports that the Mets beat the Phils 4 to 2 that is a right wing conspiracy.
The facts are the facts irregardless of who reports them. I think you have worn out that argument even the Obama campaign abandoned that because they were looking silly.

As far as Richard Mellon Scaife please know what you are talking about before you speak. RMS is the owner of the Pittsburgh Tribune a notorious ant-Clinton bordering on slanderous newspaper. The paper’s editor requested an interview with Hillary and granted that request. Do you understand so far or are we going to fast for you. During the interview Scaife requested to sit in. No nefarious meetings just an interview which was published in the paper. They ripped her anyway.

Hello,

“Clever” one-liners are incapable or erasing the whole rancid Obama package of 20 years with Wright, naming his book after this homophobic sermon, Rezko, Auchi, Ayers, a corrupt campaign of intimidation and threats and god knows what else, etc.

It is disingenuous and an unfair comparison you make.

There are plenty of reasonable people here willing to debate you, but you will have to provide more than a one-liner drive-by posting.

Obama shows the poorest of judgment. Would you sit in that church for 20 years and pick that man as your mentor? Most people would not. They would find another church.

I don’t know about one visit to the Whitehouse, but I am certain the Clinton’s did not know of Wright’s past. If you have evidence they did know, please provide it. I would think if there was such evidence it would have come out long ago.

Any person or church that scapegoats certain groups in furtherance of the ego of the pastor and funding is not something mainstream America wants anything to do with. Obama is out of touch with mainstream America which would explain him dissing the people in Pennsylvania like he did.

Everyone already knows that Rev. Wright attended an event, along with many other clergy. If I were you, I wouldn’t begin to play that “guilt by association game”, not with that candidate of yours.

Hey.. as all of you guys have been proclaiming this week that “you don’t need us!” to win the GE, then why are you here?

I presume the relative poverty of the Clintons will show them to be different in this regard, eh?

I didn’t quite think Rev wright was slurring homsexuals in that statement. I thought Wright had a big aids thing going on in his church. Not to excuse Obama from his stands….especially the tour with that reformed gay preacher, Donnie McClurkin, he went around with.

Comment by Janis | 2008-04-19 20:08:45

I doubt he cares about AIDS and gay people. AIDS and the black community … well, yes in his way. Not enough to do anything other than spread lies about it.

Comment by Donald from Hawaii | 2008-04-19 20:43:10

Please don’t go there. I’ve worked as a volunteer HIV counselor for nonprofit support networks a number of years. It is a fact that the AIDS epidemic hit the Chicago black community particularly hard. Rev. Wright undoubtedly presided over the funerals of many victims, and counseled their survivors.

Suffice to say that the good pastor offered up in anger some questionable and outlandish statements. Let’s not compound the ill will by retorting in a mean-spirited and equally foolish manner that otherwise good and decent people inevitably come to regret. Remember, until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes …

I think it would be a far better use of our time to ask Sen. Obama what if anything did he proposed specifically, in his capacity as chair of the Illinois state senate’s health committee in 2003-04, to direct sorely-needed resources toward dealing with this HIV / AIDS crisis in his own community. Of course, that question could well prove to be rhetorical.

Comment by Janis | 2008-04-19 22:05:01

Point taken, and I am duly admonished. But I just can’t see how spreading those foul lies would have done any good for anyone. What other lies has he spread? Has he counseled safe sex? Safe sex for gay men and lesbians as well, in his community? Told people the ways they can and can’t get HIV? One lie falsely spread can undo the good of twenty truths when it comes to a virus like this — all it takes of one mistake.

I just don’t know if he really understands or feels remorse at this, or if he wants to do constructive things to help. PLENTY of priests have duly and ponderously stood over the bodies of people in their flock who died, intoned all the words, and felt nothing.

I just can’t make assumptions about him. I would need to know absolutely and without any ambiguity where he stood and stands on this before I’m going to cut him ANY slack.

….it seems to me no Democrats should be supporting Obama since he has promoted anti- gay People and toured with them in South Carolina..the likes of singers Mary Mary and the ex-gay Donnie McClurkin Oct 26, 2007, it couldn’t get much more anti gay than that or homophobic.

and do “Remember, until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes …”

All of my gay friends were appalled by Obama over that manipulation and political stunt..and it ” was a complete” political manipulation.

I can not imagine anyone who has gay friends or friends who have had HIV infected family members or friends, would support this vile man. He is counter to every value i have had for a lifetime in Democrats.

As a flight crew for 33 years of a major airline, many of my friends and co-workers died of AIDS, and were allowed to die because of political manipulations of a horrible disease. They were White, Asian,of all religions, and African American. Male and female.

I can not stomach another president of this nation, that would play such Political games with so many peoples lives for political gain..Obama disgraces the Democratic party values and those who have worked for this party for so long for equality and compassion.

All I see out of Obama and those who he has surrounded himself with are people of hate..intolerant people of hate.

One can try as they might to dress it up as something else , but I see it, as it is ..hate..

I believe I have seen enough of that to last me the rest of my lifetime, I will not stay in the democratic party a day longer if Obama is our nominee, through manipulation and hate and deceit. And unfortunately that is what is happening in the dem party to date.

From a 2004 Elected Democratic Delegate from the State of Florida. The State Obama won’t count our votes and the DNC is manipulating this election with!

In my humble opinion….You can’t care about AIDS in any community unless education and other prevention tools are offered. As long as the emphasis is on MORALITY we will continue to kill the young….

I had the same impression that he was basically saying have the audacity to hope for the welfare of a homosexual about whom you care and are concerned. That is rather open to interpretation—hope that they will be ok or, as I think it was interpreted here, hope that they may be “cured”. While the Rev. probably meant the latter, this passage is not damning like his KKKAmerica or god damn America etc. I do not like Obama; I think he is worse than G. W. Bush but I also like to try not to say or do some of the things both Bush and Obama do that cause me to dislike them intensely. So I do not want to read a lot of meaning in between lines.

Jangles….I think perusing some of the excellent Gay Press out there could open your eyes a little….Loved the recent Blank Front page in the Philly press because THE LIL’ PRINCE would’t give them any interviews. It was CLASSIC…On one side OBAMESSIAH’S photo and then Blank. On the other side HRC’S photo and an extensive interiew. Refusing to deal with a sizable number of the traditional democratic base is a big mistake. BTW the Village Voice Wayne Barrett has been doing EXCELLENT COVERAGE. But then again I’ve always enjoyed reading the Voice.

Oh God, here we go… A conversation about people’s lives and rights peppered with the input of the ignorant. Terrific.
Well, for those of you who have souls:

Rev. Meeks (Obama’s buddy): gives sermons where gay folks are routinely roasted in hell. He also likes to scare the shit out of little children (sexuality unknown) by telling them that they will go to hell.

Rev. Wright’s Trinity Emporium of Hate: choir master
was found brutally murdered. Trinity’s response was “well, he did lead an openly gay lifestyle…”

Donnie McClurkin: poster boy for “Jesus cured me of my homosexuality..” On the campaign trail for Obama even after huge uproar from gay community.

Larry Sinclair: we don’t even know what the hell is going on there.

Gay Newspapers: Obama won’t give interviews to them.
One paper even ran a big blank space to show where the interview would have gone, if Obama had deigned to give it.

Now all this anti-gay behavior and close affiliations, while Obama is blowing smoke to the gay communtiy about how he is there buddy, their pal, their champion.

Oh, by the way.. sorry if that intro was a little harsh. I was just assuming that from the first comment that there would be plenty more. No one else has taken that tact. So, my bad.

Comment by Uppity | 2008-04-19 20:49:08

Well you certainly pretty much wrapped up the question, that’s for sure.

Comment by hillarysmygirl | 2008-04-20 13:32:40

I didn’t see anything harsh about it, it’s the truth! And the truth sure hurts the Obamazoids, that’s why they come here and lash out at us (that and the $1.50 an hour from the Obama campaign). Some people’s souls are easily bought…

The more I see Obambi, the less I like him. If he were truly Chauncy Gardner, I’d like him a lot more, because at least he would be a true innocent. But he’s not. His performance at his speech post-debate was stunning…I can’t believe his followers think he’s funny or cute or hip or whatever it is they like about him. I don’t need a hip guy/friend President who deep in his heart holds so much anger and hate, I need someone who will come in an get the job done. People seem to forget that the job of President is about being our public servant. And no one is more willing to be of service to us than Hillary. All I can see Obama wanting to serve is his own ego.

According to the CDC:

In the United States, the HIV/AIDS epidemic is a health crisis for African Americans. At all stages of HIV/AIDS—from infection with HIV to death with AIDS—blacks (including African Americans) are disproportion
