Frank Luntz Praises Hillary’s Speech & More Punditry

NOTICE: Hillary Clinton will “roadblock all six broadcast and cable morning shows Wednesday.”

GIGGLER OF THE NIGHT: “[Tim] Russert just said that in a general election, Obama needs to shore up his support with working class white women. Fair enough. He speculated that you might do that by focusing on the economy. Sounds plausible. He then speculated you might do that by picking Mike Bloomberg as VP. So put it all together, and Russert thinks working class white women are looking for . . . New York City’s billionaire Jewish mayor? Really?” — from Matthew Yglesias for The Atlantic

POPULAR VOTE NUMBERS: ABC News Delegate Tracker (down one screen) notes that, if you count Michigan, Hillary has taken the lead in the popular vote:
      Hillary - 15,005,761
      Obama - 14,893,607

ABC’s JAKE TAPPER adds, “Why Can’t Obama Win Pennsylvania?“:

There’s this presumption out there, it seems to me, as if it’s just a CRAZY notion that Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, would be able to win the Keystone State, like the idea is INSANE, just unfathomable, as if the state consists of Bill, Chelsea, and les freres Rodham.

I don’t begrudge the Obama campaign for successfully setting Sen. Clinton’s bar so high — that’s its job — and of course I understand that in order for Clinton to have a real shot, she needs a big W so as to eat away at Obama’s 800,000 popular vote lead, and to make the argument to super-Ds that states such as Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Florida are a problem for him.

Fine, fine.

But what’s so crazy about the idea that the Democratic frontrunner — flush with cash and outspending Clinton 3-to-1, running against a candidate with such high unfavorable ratings — should be able to win a blue state primary?

Just because Clinton has the support of the governor and the mayors of the two largest cities? So what? This isn’t about Ed Rendell. …

EFF the NYT. To this pathetic, Obama-like weak editorial:

NYT joke editorial

I left the following response, which is likely to not see the light of the comment board but which need to be said:
.
.
.

An embarrassing and untoward editorial from The Old Gray Lady. To put it mildly, you are far better than this.

There is a very good reason why you are writers and editors and the high-priced political consultants have their own jobs. To put it bluntly: Stay in the shallow end of the political pool and stick with spliced commas.

Senator Obama has not been properly vetted, much as your paper failed in its duty to help Americans vet the supposed intelligence which led up to the Iraq War, or failed to capture fabricating employees.

There are numerous reasons why the Times is slipping without any hopes of righting itself in terms of advertising revenue and distribution. This editorial is a succinct display of those reasons.

If you decide it is your obligation to play the new Pat Leahy to Mrs. Clinton, do not be surprised when your readers decide to mimic Dick Cheney to your Leahy.

Hillary won an enormous victory tonight, and your desire to have the referees prematurely stop the contest demonstrates the same lack of resilience and strength which has just seen Obama both turn down a debate in North Carolina and decide not to talk with reporters for 10 days.

John Adams would be disgusted with both you and the Illinois senator.

In the comments section of the Matthew Yglesias article, a couple of people suggested that Obama pick Joe Lieberman as his VP. I would love to see Obama announce tomorrow that he is considering Holy Joe as his running mate. The Boyz in the Blogz like Kos and the rest of the crew heads would explode before they twisted themselves into knots trying to rationalize that move.

Comment by typical.white.person | 2008-04-23 03:33:01

There’s not much difference between David Boren and Lieberman (besides Boren hiding in a closet all his life).

Since Boren endorsed Obama this last week, having Liebermen on his ticket wouldn’t be that far off base.

What is this obsession with choosing a Republican as a running mate? And yes, Lieberman is a Republican as anyone. Obama can’t think of a Democrat as a running mate. Same reason he is floating only Republicans for Cabinet positions. He is completely dependendent on those Obamacans for votes.

I don’t see anyone demanding that Hillary choose a Republican. She would clock them for even suggesting it. That is because she is a true Democrat.

Comment by myiq2xu | 2008-04-23 03:46:41

Hillary wins decisively in all but one of the big state primaries, several of them “battleground” states where the November election will be one or lost, like Ohio, Florida, Michigan, Pennsylvania.

Obama wins caucuses and a few primaries in lots of small and/or solid red states that will almost certainly go to McCain next fall.

Who does the media, most of the lefty blogosphere and the Democratic Party elite think we should nominate?

McGovern - Mondale - Dukakis - Obama

The few, the lame, the losers

Comment by John | 2008-04-23 07:24:30

Obama can win states (in the primaries) where we see:

1. Overwhelming superiority in numbers for African-Americans in the Democratic primary (SC, Georgia, Mississippi)

2. A large population of wealthy liberal whites (Connecticut, Maryland, Virginia, probably Oregon)

3. Lily-white Republican states (Idaho, Utah, Kansas, the Dakotas…)

Great coalition there. Are you paying attention, Superdelegates?

Obama CANT WIN in states we NEED IN NOVEMBER. We get it. Why don’t you?

Comment by beebop | 2008-04-23 07:59:44

And how many of those states are going to — as the One likes to put it — vote against their interests or party history? Damn few.

Comment by Uppity | 2008-04-23 07:44:57

McGovern - Mondale - Dukakis - Obama

Exactly! And I watched them all. None were as lame as Obama either. Lame. Just. Plain. Lame.

The one thing they all have in common, besides being losers in a GE, is they were championed by the whackjob fringe that just won’t understand that they cannot hijack the Democratic party in a General Election.

Comment by workingclass artist | 2008-04-23 07:57:42

Morning Uppity!

One thing I noticed about the fringe in Obama’s camp……. a LOT of those voters started out as a champion of Dennis or Bill R then when Dennis fell short most of them moved to John E and after JE got out they had only 2 choices and Hillary was NOT IT.

Because MOST of them are the unforgiving left

The LOONY left sanctimonious (I’ve used that a LOT) holy roller left!

Not that far away from the LOONY bible thumping red letter giving RIGHT

I wonder if there is a place where previous voters for BO that have now realized they frigged up…… if there is a place they could undo (symbolically) their vote for that fraud?

I wonder?

This election is in so many ways reminds me of 1972 but with Obama acting the part of Thomas Eagleton.

Eagleton was the nominee of VP who after receiving the nomination was discovered to have had electroshock therapy. The party did not vet the candidate and as a several weeks dragged on any chance McGovern had was destroyed by lack of action by the DNC. After awhile Eagleton was removed but the party could not find anyone to run with McGovern because his campaign became toxic. They eventually settled on Kennedy in-law Sgt. Shriever. The result was the worst election landslide in history with down ticket candidates suffering as well eventhough they tried to distance themselves from the McGovern campaign.

I see Obama as Eagleton not vetted not disclosing his nefarious connections and the DNC not recognizing the potential damaged it is doing to its prospects in November, not just with the presidency but down ticket as well.
I fear the Democratic Party is in for another Eagleton moment.

I have no idea why the Times feels it has the right to try to blunt Clinton’s momentum with that BS editorial. The good news is that in looking at some of the comments on the piece, many people were rightly pissed of at the NYT’s cheap shot.

Look, if Obama is Jesus and Moses rolled into one, why is it that everybody is going out of their way to protect him? Didn’t Jesus spend 40 days in the desert or am I making a mistake?

Obama is one of the most pampered, spoiled candidates I can ever remember. He is a glass-jawed fraud. I have NO idea what people see in him except that which Shelby Steele has suggested, i.e., ‘white guilt.’

Comment by Xeno | 2008-04-23 05:18:03

You are absolutely right about the fact that the obots, both online and in the press, are obsessed with protecting their messiah. The reason for that is obvious, at least to me. Even the obamatons most drunk on Kool-Aid know damned well that the man is an extremely weak candidate. He simply cannot stand up under the sort of battering a presidential contender is going to take. They are also well aware that he has a closet full of skeletons that haven’t yet been fully exposed to the public. Because of Obama’s many weaknesses and liabilities, his supporters feel compelled to try to protect him.

Of course, all that coddling just makes it apparent that he is weak and unready for the general election. If he can’t win a primary with all the money in the world and the press corps as his personal cheerleading squad, how can he beat McCain?

Comment by Uppity | 2008-04-23 07:47:13

The race card is already being deployed by the coastal elitists at Huffpuke and Sirota as a explanation why the messiah lost.

This morning’s NY Times has an anti-Clinton editorial straight from the desk of David Axelrod (via Frank Rich, no doubt). It is so full of Obama-pandering and logic-lapses that there is no way it could be the result of their Editorial Board (as claimed).

Sorry I missed Paul’s earlier comments on this. At least I provided links. ;-)

That may well be the most disingenuous editorial I have ever read in the NY Times, and I’ve read a few. However, was it racism that allowed their effete sensibilities to not be offended by images of Katrina?

America suffered two major terrorist attacks on US soil during Bill Clinton’s term in office. In both cases, those responsible were apprehended and convicted. Bin Laden still walks freely, something the Times seems to have forgotten.

Comment by John | 2008-04-23 07:31:45

Post a comment, but don’t read the other posts if you don’t want to spend the day in an angry haze. People are just utterly clueless. “Thank you NY Times!” “Hillary needs to go!” “McAulliffe is trying to twist the rules to give Hillary the nomination!” (seriously!)

It’s scary how deluded these people are.

Deluded, and mean-spirited. And pathetic poor sports.

Suck it, losers. How do you expect to deal with Obama getting pounded like a pinata in November if you react like this over a loss in Pennsylvania?

Hillary did really well 70% of the catholic vote in Pa. When you factor in Latinos, another huge block of the catholic vote…Large populations in the southwest and both coasts….For the first time in years the catholic vote becomes really relevant. OBAMESSIAH wll not be able to make the inroads with this vote in Nov. Although McInsane with his association with Agee the freak has been a little hurt in terms of distasteful hesitation in the minds of Catholc voters and OBAMESSIAH will try to exploit this. he will not succeed. OBAMESSIAH will not succeed because catholics know there is a big difference between an expediant endorsement by FreakAgee and 20 yrs. of indoctrination in BLACK (SEPARATIST) LIBERATION THEOLOGY, which most catholics find deeply disturbing…..Caholics are very aware of Liberation Theology and it’s history with the church throughout Latin America. When your candidacy disturbs voting blocks of two of the traditional orthodox religions ( catholics and Jews ) even in his largely protestant country notice should be taken. I would suggest to Kennedy and Kerry, GO TO MASS and have a chat with some everyday catholics.

Comment by stodghie | 2008-04-23 09:17:07

liberation theology in latin america did bring out some i think sincere catholic priests. i notice that it was put down by the vatican. at the end of the day good intentions often take the wrong road. that happened in a number of occasions in latin america. the road taken by rev wrong and obama does not even have good intentions.

Comment by workingclass artist | 2008-04-23 09:31:30

It was smacked down by the vatican for a number of reasons…Here’s a couple…The theology subverts doctinal authority of any denomination (why the baptists wouldn’t give Wright a church)….Social justice achieved with marxist ideology….Making christian identity into militant action…The list goes on. The historical consenses is still up in the air about history in Latin America on this, but the vatican is clear and most catholics were wary of the miltant mix….It’s interesting stuff to read up on. Black Liberation Theology is black sepratism with sprinkle of Jesus to help Marx wash down a bit easier.

Comment by stodghie | 2008-04-23 09:50:49

thanks so much for the update. you really know your “stuf”. i have some sympathy for the priests in latin america but i can’t find any for the rev wrong brand of theology.

the priests in latin america lived in poor conditions and sometimes died for their beliefs, whereas rev wrong sure profitited ie 10000 square foot home and all. i can see however why the catholic church would have to end this trend with the marxist background and what appeared to be open rebellion to rome.

Comment by workingclass artist | 2008-04-23 10:49:14

I haveto agree with you on that one. Liberation Theology is very seductive…Mostly it was smacked down as an heresy. A lot of priests that were involved in Latin America got caught up in trying to change things and many were killed. Ultimately it is a dangerous mix. The RCC has been trying to redefine political activism and square it for catholics, ut they don’t like tactics that call for ( CLASS WARFARE ) The RCC has been there and done that. I took a theology class in college taught be an ex-jesuit when this shit was hitting the fan globaly. It was one of the best philosophy classes I ever took…..Americans ned to understand that this shit is just as radical as radical Islam is that’s why Wright sounds so scary,
He is scary…..Liberation Theology is extremist…Extremism is scary.

Hillary’s speech was, as usual, just great. She always engages with her audience and it is apparent that they are with her 100%. So few of the pundidiots ever notice or comment about her speaking ability. But then she is Hillary Clinton and must never be shown in a favorable light. Ever.

Evidently the people are seeing through all these pundidiots and their drivel.

I remember years ago when a JFK speech on television ended and my mother turned to my dad and said, “Now some idiot is gonna come on and tell all us morons what he meant by what he said”. She had it right then and the people have it right now.

I didn’t watch the returns last night. I swooped in periodically to get numbers and swooped right back to whatever nonsensical program I was watching.

The pundidiots on CNN, I care too much for my aging intellect to ever watch the pinheads on MSNBC, particularly Borger and Toobin can be relied upon to make a case against Hillary Clinton no matter what the numbers are. But then Obama is still, to a certain extent, the media’s darling. Real Americans with real brains shouldn’t like that much. They should remember that GeeDubya was the media’s darling too. Look how well that worked.

After the votes are counted, the only thing that matters to me, is what the numbers say. Pundidiots have long since lost their entertainment value and are now just bores that get in the way of a rational discourse and an honest election.

Comment by Melissa | 2008-04-23 09:38:28

I would suggest to everybody that you tune out the pundits on CNN and MSNBC. We know they are corporate owned and they want to keep their War Contracts. They are the biggest war profiteers out there. I watched the returns and Hillary’s victory speech on C-Span. It was very different. I heard conversations real-time without pundit heads speaking over her. There was no spin. Why watch these shows and their advertizers and give them the viewership they do not deserve. They do NOT serve America. They, like Obama, serve only themselves. They will be in the tank for McCain in the General Election. Cut their balls off now. Obama thinks he can win the women’s vote with a wink and a kiss and a “sweetie”, as a gay guy, I can say that he’s not Brad Pitt.

Donna isn’t having second thoughts. She is setting another bar for Hillary to hop over. She is about as obvious as a sink hole.

Queen Donna knows Barry is sending loads of folks over to Indy from Illinois
I am hoping the true blue Dems of Indy will pull out another win for Hillary and the Dems

Broadway Baby, baby. Read what a Chicago Trib columnist says about a new problem for Obama — http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/columnists/chi-kass-23-apr23,1,4967065.column

I gave $100 last night, and my wife is planning on giving something today.

I have been watching Morning Joe. This is incredible- I am sure it won’t last- but Hillary is actually receiving major compliments- and they (Chris Matthews) is actually pointing out OCharma’s major short comings.

Hummm, maybe I should pinch myself…or…have we all worked so hard that the tide is actually turning?

Comment by Uppity | 2008-04-23 07:49:25

They are going to learn sooner or later that they will NOT tell us who we want for President. If they can’t cover truth, we will find it elsewhere and pass it on, and we will KEEP passing it on till it becomes Common Knowledge.

This could be shaping up to be a fight between Old guard pols of ither party backlah against the ” New Politics “. The more baby-O’s slam the internet and us childish thuggery…The more the old guard is gettin pissed off. If the race was between McInsane and Clinton it would be just the usual political race…Folks are gettin tired of the left anti-everyone BS…Esp. the RACE CARD….It won’t fly against the GOP.

You know, if I were Hillary, I wouldn’t want, (or take it as a good sign), the support of guys like Russert, and Matthews.

They have NO credibility, and they’re so easily swayed, or bought.

I wouldn’t look a gift horse in the mouth, but I would nurture, or look for new, trustworthy journalistic support, people who don’t pander, who tell the truth.

And tell the truth to my opponent, as well.

I’m steeling myself to go over to Taegan Goddard’s site and learn why Hillary’s win was a loss, up is down, and black is white.

Then I can read the posts, and learn why Hillary only won PA because she’s a bitch, but she didn’t really even win, and she needs to quit now, and that the racists won again, except she didn’t really win.

On another topic: once again, we find in Pennsylvania what will never be mentioned by the media: that the real “racists” among the voters are the African-Americans. Or does MSNBC and CNN think that black voters keep going for Barack 9-1 because they prefer his Health Care plan?

Comment by beebop | 2008-04-23 07:57:45

Why, that would be racist, of course!

Comment by John | 2008-04-23 08:23:02

My visit was exactly as predicted: “do the math, she can’t win,” links to comments by David Axelrod explaining this was “no big deal” and posts like “people dont like her, thats why she didnt win by twenty points like she was supposed to…”

What the F-ever. I think Taegan Goddards’ people are people who left Kos and HuffingtonPost because they couldn’t deal with the elevated level of discourse there.

the sad thing here is that obama hasn’t done anything for the aa community and probably won’t in the future. so why vote for him? i can see being proud and inclined to vote for him but think critically. the clintons have done a lot for aa’s, so i think their vote for barry is shameful.

Dowd column is the NYT today was one of the most disgusting pieces of crap I have ever read. I think there is something mentally wrong with that women. She goes around talking about how she can’t find a man who is worthy of her, maybe it’s because she is a frustrated old bag without any appeal to the opposite sex. She is another wind bag who I wish would just go away.
