He. Can’t. Close. The. Deal.
By SusanUnPC on April 23, 2008 at 11:56 AM in Barack Obama, DNC, Electoral College, Hillary Clinton, Howard Dean, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas
Via MyDD’s Jerome Armstrong today, in “Counting the people“:
The AP asks: “Why can’t Barack Obama close the deal?“ The contest in PA was the 4th major chance that Obama had to close the deal, and failed again. Anyone who thinks that Clinton is going to be out of the race in May is delusional. For us political junkies, it’s quite a fix.
Boy, did that question bring back memories. Memories of a story I wrote on March 5, 2008: “Hurrah! (He. Can’t. Close. The. Deal.).”
It is eerie how much of what I wrote following Hillary’s March 4th victories in the big states of Ohio and Texas, as well as Rhode Island — and the critical quote in that piece from Taylor Marsh — remains true nearly two months later.
“The wind at Barack’s back, the press at his feet, but he couldn’t close it out,” Taylor [wrote on March 5, 2008].
In fact, Taylor Marsh revived the point, last night, that Obama can’t close the deal:
On to North Carolina. …then Indiana.
Last night was a game changer. With all [of his] advantages, Obama still couldn’t close the deal.
Here’s more from my March 5th story, about Hillary’s morning show appearances following her big victories, especially in Ohio — a likely “blue” state come November 2008:
… Halperin on more morning shows:
ABC’s “Good Morning America”: Clinton tried to frame the race around John McCain, saying that now there’s a GOP nominee it’s even more critical to have a Democratic nominee who can stand up to him on national security. Doesn’t accept that she’s gone negative against Obama, said national security is legitimate issue to contrast. Ignored the math questions, still thinks Michigan and Florida delegates should be seated, said it’s up to state leaders.
NBC’s “Today”: Clinton said voters are “starting to ask some hard questions” and realizing she’d be best commander in chief and best on the economy. Offered lengthy defense of superdelegates exercising independent judgment, saying that was the reason they were created. Said Florida and Michigan voters should count, and voters “were dragged into” the confusion by GOP governors and legislatures. Also more firmly denied that Obama is a Muslim, called it “a scurillous rumor that should be rejected out of hand.”
It’s also amusing to re-read the section of that story about Obama’s complaints about tactics.
He’s always whining.
She’s always winning — where it counts.

The victory last night in PA is decisive. He outspent her 3:1, but she trounced him. Obama cannot close, while Clinton can.
I want another debate.
Here, here, me, too.
Speaking of debates, and capabilities, I went shopping at Target, and I swear, over night, every item, in particular, FOOD, went up at least 1.50.
So I went without, and will be making significant changes in my spending. High oil hurts the whole economy, and wages are not matching.
This is significant, and it’s related to oil.
Bama gonna handle that?
Don’t think so…
The Fact Hub — which Jerome also quotes — has this today:
I suggest that all clinton supporters send out a graphics of the state by state break down based on the electoral college and point out that she effortlessly won over 300 points already.
http://www.mockelection.org/electionmap/
here’s one you can play with. if you plug in his wins and her wins you will see how badly he’s lagging the magic 270.
It’s her most effective argument for the superdelegates. everyone with half a brain can understand what she’s accomplished in winning all the 20+ states and the battlegrounds.
i agree
lets all be friends ,,,and lets work together ,,,
lets all share the links
and post it and paste it everywhere
and lets do it
Obama uses math. Hillary uses critical thinking.

You guys do such good work….I was just wondering….Could you or Larry do another Shame on You Obama article on the fact that he is insulting Al Gore when he attacks the Clinton Adminstration. This is not only bad strategy for the GE but it might squelch the Secret Gore support that baby-O and his campign is spinning…Al Gore has a lot of support and a lot of these Latte Liberals are in the baby’s camp… Either they play down the Clinton/Gore connection or they are just hypocrites. If a democrat is supportive of Al Gore…How can they also support a candidate who insults and distorts the Clinton/Gore admin….Bill Clinton’s accomplishments during his presidency were also Al Gore’s…..
Susan, I mentioned these numbers in an earlier thread. We need to start a drumbeat on FL and MI using these numbers and force Obama and his minions to say FL and MI don’t count. On mydd the delegate numbers are also close (+15 for O) and she may come out ahead in that after all PA delegates are assessed. We have to repeat these numbers everywhere and boost Clinton’s argument — apparently she mentioned she was ahead in popular vote at a rally today.
Terry’s on MSNBC and announced 10 million in cash donated online since last night and 50,000 donors!
Holy bat shit!
Obama did not sweep the Philly suburbs as advertised. He got fewer votes than expected in Philly itself. He received a drubbing in the rest of the state. His electorate is shrinking. As Bud Whight points out in his excellent post here today, Obama would have trouble carrying Massachusetts against McCain, for crying out loud. Count all the certified votes cast in this primary and she’s ahead by over 100,000. He’s tanking.
Oh, this wasn’t in response to Garlic-nosed guitarist, just a comment… sorry bout that.
Turnout for his demo was also a problem — under 29, 10% and under 40, 17% (I think). check savagepolitics.com for more.

Clinton Snags Tennessee SuperdelegateWednesday, April 23rd, 2008
hillary got a new superdelegate today ,,,but ofcourse media will not mention it ,,so pls post the link everywhere
Consider this: 46% of Clinton voters last night said they would not vote for Obama in the general election. 26% would vote McCain, 17% would stay home. Now, these aren’t political junky types who are just upset at the machinations of the Obama campaign. They are mostly regular hard-working folks who just don’t like him, and won’t change their minds.
So let’s play it out. Let’s say that a generic Democratic candidate would win PA by 53-47%. That’s probably too optimistic. And let’s say that only 15% of Clinton voters last night would vote McCain. That’s too optimistic, too. But even so, assuming 4 million votes in PA in November, the generic Democrat would win 2,120,000 to 1,880,000. But 15% of Clinton voters last night is about 180,000; and them voting for McCain would make Obama lose by 2,060,000 to 1,940,000. And again, the defections could be higher and the margin greater. If Obama can’t win PA, he has no chance to win the White House; there is almost no mathematical way he can win enough electoral votes without it, given that no Democrat who can’t win PA can win more conservative neighbor OH. So that’s it, game over–if Obama is nominnated. Democratic suicide, or an almost certain win with a Clinton nomination–what do Dean and Pelosi choose? The math is irrefutable.
To: William
Yes. You are right. I’m among those who don’t like BO. The main reason I did not support him when Edwards quit is that BO is unaccomplished, but when he played the race card I lost respect for BO. I don’t see how I can vote for him, and that’s upsetting because I don’t like McCain. Skipping the vote for POTUS is always an alternative.
William your right. He has maxed out his AA vote there is really no more he can get here even in the general election. He has not not shown the kind of strength in other demographics that could get him over the top. His supposed strength with college educated was debunked last night, he has shown continual weakness with women, and I am not sure about the youth vote.
The students who were at the events in Pennsylvania had already voted. What the MSM doesn’t measure is how many are actually registered in their home states. This should not be overlooked in North Carolina either.
Aren’t there a lot of military in North Carolina?
Does “god damn Amerika” play well with those in uniform?
Well his pastor hates crackers….His associates hate America…His Base hates the working class…Nuff said…
He. Can’t. Close. The. Deal.
That sound you hear is goalposts moving…
neither. can. she.
Agreed.
Why don’t you trolls take your discussion where you’ll find more receptive crank yankers like yourselves?
“Why don’t you trolls take your discussion where you’ll find more receptive crank yankers like yourselves?”
Why don’t you take that giant chip off your shoulder and calm down? You had a good night, why don’t you just savor it?
We would if you didn’t try to piss on it and say it’s raining.
Do you not get it?
He had unlimited funding and nearly six weeks.
You couldn’t turn the TV on without an ad running.
The media puts their jackets down over mud puddles.
A couple of irritating questions and he turns into Paris Hilton and flounces for a week losing precious time and not helping his image one bit.
He doesn’t have the personal fortitude to be a politician. No guts. And. No answers for the American people … which they are finally seeing.
He has to disqualify other people and get their names pulled off of ballots. That’s the only way he knows how to win. He can’t BEAT anyone except in caucuses and then he lets other people strong arm.
He’s a sissy and he’s losing ground.
“We would if you didn’t try to piss on it and say it’s raining.”
No one’s pissing on anything, big guy/girl. I already have, and I will again so you feel better, congratulated Hillary and No Quarter on a job well done in PA.
Why thank you Jeffy!
Jeff you are increasingly sounding like a POUTING PILLOW BITER…
Ehemmm…..Jeff you sound like a PETULANT PILLOW BITER…
Hey Jeff, remember your “we’ll see” remark when I said double digits? Just askin’.
I know you had a bad night. Sorry about that.
How sorry?
First thing I did when I stopped by this morning was congratulate Hillary and No Quarter on a job well done in PA. Naturally, no one responded to that.
It’s funny–you guys win, and you have nothing but anger left over from the experience.
Actually Jeff, I saw your remark and took under advisement. Please don’t assume anything OK?
I am not angry ,but in my view BO is an immoral person and is not qualified to be POTUS. So there you have it.
He can not change his actions of the past, but he utterly REFUSES to take ANY responsiblity for them. I can not vote for people I have zero respect for as human beings and believe me when I tell you it has nothing at all to do with ANYTHING racial. Personally I am sickened by the damage BO has caused.
Teak,
You speak for me. So very well said, and an excellent summary on Obama’s lack of character - hence worthiness to have the honor of office.
Sorry, not double-digits. 9.2%. Close, but no cigar.
You must be watching a brand new Obamazoid channel.
I love Obama’s. They love Barry fractions. Barry is a fraction all by himself. Between him and his wife they almost make a whole person.
One really bitter, angry, hate-filled person.
This is not like betting on a football game. No over/under bet, no covering the spread.
SHE WON! She wins the Dem base, she wins the big states, she is a winner. Obama had no business running given his nefarious associates and his negligible resume.
She won- deal with it!
She can and has in the big states….Baby-O is headed for olitical oblivion.
All this talk about Obama is just running out the clock is garbage. This is the time the presumptive nominee is expected to gather strength reach out to his opposition in the party and talk of unity. His campaign talks as if he is the presumptive candidate but they sure don’t act like it.
neither. does. she.
what’s next?
na na na na na na?
Still waiting for talking points?
Still trying to find spin?
Spin this — $10Million less than 24 hours. Real little donors … no bundling.
Rock on Hillary.
Nothing from the middle east.
Rock On…
Rock On…
Words will become solutions
Hope will become reality.
Amen sister!
8 out of 9 of the big states. You know, the ones with all the votes in the GE? The ones Democrats HAVE to win?
Of course, all us Hillary people will just fall at his feet and run out and vote for him. And the knife ran away with the spoon…
Oh look! The return of the prodigal Obamazoids!
Yeah, and Jeff here is trying to minimize the burn, what’s with that? I can’t imagine how shiteous they must feel today.
actually
we are typical white people who are bitter and cling to guns and church
and we are the ones whom obama said ,,,,I CAN GET HILLARY SUPPORTERS BUT HILLARY CAN,T GET MINE,,,,

And adults do not reward such scurrilous behavior with “make Nice” or our VOTES!!!
Whoops, almost forgot to ad the despicable hacking of Hillary blog sites - That is called sabotage.
Check the ads RNC is running in NC. Obama supporters are idiots for putting the party in jeopardy. This would have been such an easy election to win but for those fools.
Well, I guess he’ll have to “pull out all the stops” and “go negative” and all those things he says again and again he has so far restrained from, but is being forced to consider. Every time he gets the shit kicked out of him, Obama vows to finally go negative.
And the MSM acts like it will be a new thing. And not like he is just going to go even more negative than he has been from the start.
Oh, and Hillary makes him do it? Right. His entire campaign has been predicated on the race card.
Well, of course it’s her fault. Haven’t you been listening. It is always Hillary’s fault. Unless it is Bill’s.
But, then again, it will not be called going negative when Obama does it either. It will be some aide’s fault, and he cannot control what his campaign does. Or he is just misunderstood. If you aren’t carrying your W.O.R.M. dictionary, then it’s not his fault if you took it wrong.

He can’t close the deal because the many people don’t think he can’t win the general election. And the many people don’t think he will be a good president.
Many PEOPLE DON”T DRINK KOOL Aid. Many PEOPLE DON”T BUY MSM spin.
He can’t close the deal because he’s all mouth and no substance. How many of him have we met in the workplace? Dime a dozen.
Yeah. And when someone gets wise and they get passed over for a promotion, they take their ball and leave. He’s not in this for the “good of the country,” he’s all about Barack and Michelle.
or worse yet they get the promotion and the company goes down the drain.
article in my local paper called hillary’s win “decisive, but not substantial.” whhhhhhatttt?
bet if obama won by 10 they’d call it an unprecedented landslide.
He closed the deal by creating an insurmountable delegate lead, in a race for delegates.
This site gives new life to the term “self parody.” Very entertaining. Keep up the good work!
isn’t it? i get a kick out of all these folks who claim to be democrats trashing the ‘obamabots’ as a bunch of cult followers. yet according to the (bs) polls about which supporters would vote for the other candidate, more of his supporters would vote for her than vice versa. i’m sorry — who’s the cult figure?
he’s the Occult figure?
You have your (”bs”) numbers reversed. Now don’t make me have to pull up those polls. I hate doing children’s homework for them.
Bwaaaana….You are a PETULANT PILLOW BITER…..
nope. just dispassionate and disinterested. mccain will beat either of them.
boo hoo ….;(
bless your heart.

Middle finger up. Not next to my cheek … well, at least not the one on my fact …
uh … that would be face ….
Not because many people don’t THINK he can win the election, because many people KNOW he can’t win the election. If there has EVER been a more UNelectable candidate in the HISTORY of this country I’d sure like to see the candidates for that honor. Check out the adds the repugs are running in NC. Think only repugs are gonna see them? I am AMAZED they don’t have one panning across all the headstones at a military graveyard and then fade to MO and her famous “for the FIRST time in my adult life I’m proud of America” Abd then go to a black screen with white text For the FIRST time?! This clown is UNELECTABLE and it is mind numbing to realize that the Democratic party is in FACT run by a bunch of uberliberal elitests who apparently have contempt for the average working, veteran and voter. I’m thinking maybe it is PAST time for a third party in this country. Because if the Dem elite manages to jam obamalamadingdong down the Dem voters throats they are ABSO-FARKIN-LUTELY NOT the party I registered in those many decades ago. And I am ready to go with people who REALLY do have a feel for the peoples will. NOT just what the rich proffesional political hacks at Party Headquarters want.
McCain has asked the NC GOP to quit running those ads. Magnanimous gesture? Doubt it. More likely McCain doesn’t want to accidentally lose NC to Hillary by their own ads. The GOP wants Obama in the fall. They want him bad.
They hate Hillary, and for good reason (she beats them).
Yeah. He’s learning from Barry.
Let it run. Let people see them. Let them do their damage. And then ask nicey nicey for them to stop.
Karl Rove.
Chapter three.
Never leave your OWN finger prints. Let others do it for you.

Shorter New York Times editorial:
Hillary Clinton’s ruthless insistence on winning big-state primaries with traditional Democratic voters only hastens and strengthens the case that she drop out of the race and let Barack Obama finish his waffle.

Is this their fashion issue?
Is Barry going to wear something other than black?
Is it a red tie?
he. won’t. close. the. deal.
lolololol.
and the nyt can shove itself up its ….
Sen. Obama owes it to Aemrican people to present himself as the true leader by confronting Sen. Clinton in a debate in N. Carolina. If he is unwilling or unable do do so, he should not run for President.
No debate - no mandate!
I love it, Susan!
“Obama Whines, Clinton Wins!”
Isn’t Obama now sounding like a Republican?
Clintons vs Republicans 7-0
Clintons win, Republicans whine and turn nasty against the Clintons!
Clintons win, Obama whines and turns nasty against the Clintons!
Is the Change Obama is offering that of turning Democrats into whining Republicans?
God Forbid….
These trolls must be masochists! Who on earth would come here today. Where’s Kevin? I miss him! Why isn’t he here yet for his daily beating!
Let’s all look toward Indiana now also.
not north carolina? it has more delegates.
Obama isn’t a closer. He’s an ordeal that goes the whole way.
And this from the AP. I sure hope the super delegates are paying close attention.

Equally valid question… why hasn’t she been able to beat him?
How come Hillary can’t close the deal.
This from the AP offers some interesting perspectives. Obama should drop out.
