Reverend Wright Says We all Twisted His Words [Video Update]
By Uppity Woman on April 24, 2008 at 3:58 PM in 9/11, Barack Obama, Black Agenda Report, Black nationalism, Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr.
UPDATE: This is the first snippet of the Wright interview, via MSNBC. We will post more video as it is released. We understand that Chris Matthews featured both video and discussion about the Moyers interview, and we’ll have that video for you soon. - Susan
________________________________
That’s right folks. We twisted his words. It’s all your fault. And it’s Hillary’s fault he said what he said too. He didn’t really say what he said. You twisted it! You twisted his twisted words. It’s really nice stuff, not bad stuff. You just are too stupid to understand Black Liberation Theology, dammit. No I mean GODDAMMIT. How could you twist all that loving stuff? You are despicable! Cut it out! All you goddamn Americans should apologize to Reverend Wright right now!
In his first wide-ranging interview since video clips of his inflammatory sermons were aired, the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr. defended himself over the controversy, saying that his words were twisted. [NO QUARTER READERS: The full interview will air Friday night on PBS's Bill Moyers Journal; Rev. Wright will also speak at a National Press Club breakfast Monday at 8:30 a.m.]“I felt it was unfair,” Mr. Wright said, according to excerpts of the interview released Thursday. “I felt it was unjust. I felt it was untrue. I felt for those who were doing that, were doing it for some very devious reasons.”
In Mr. Wright’s sermons, he suggested that Americans bore some responsibility for the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, saying “America’s chickens are coming home to roost.” He also
blamed the government for the spread of AIDS among African-Americans, characterized the United States government as corrupt and referred to the “U.S. of K.K.K. A.”He did not apologize or back away from his remarks in the interview, instead saying that people wanted to paint him as “some sort of fanatic.”
That settles it. It’s our fault.
Gee, Reverend Wright, we are sorry we stupid people got it all wrong and were a little bit put out. Let’s take another look so that we might get it right. We wouldn’t want to twist your words or anything. After all, we really appreciate that you removed the Hamas Manifesto from your web site now. No offense, Reverend Wright, but you don’t need any “paint” to look like a fanatic.
We know you didn’t really say these things.
We know you didn’t really say these things either.
Now, we don’t want to misunderstand that the Return to “68″ Movement stuff that’s being dropped all over the net has anything to do with the 1968 origination of your theology that you mentioned below a few months ago. We are just stupid that way, so let us know. We don’t want to twist it or anything. So thanks for correcting us.
I know you will be speaking to the National Press Club and you will be getting all cuddly with Bill Moyers this Friday night. So, I am just wondering: Will you tell them what you said below…or will you be changing it for now? I mean we want to know just how much we need to apologize for what you have said.

Well I guess my inferior cracker brain got all that cracker hate wrong…..Wright….
Guess it did. Go on and bite your pillow.
Be sure to copy the schedule of your favorite pastor…The Good Rev. Wright…..LOL
We must now really push for Michigan and Florida to be counted as is or for a re-vote primary be set for June! Individual personal emails have a huge impact:
Please email the DNC at this link:
http://www.democrats.org/contact.html
Email House Speaker Pelosi at this link:
http://speaker.house.gov/contact/
Email Senate Leader Harry Reid:
http://reid.senate.gov/contact/index.cfm
sonia, I swear to you, if you write to the democrats.org contact area and you find
1) you will get no answer and
2) you will start receiving a plethora of emails from Howard Dean, Nancy Pelosi and other odios people who do not represent you—asking for money. then you NEVER get rid of them.
I wrote to them and told them to crap in their hat and put it on their heads and all I got was Contributor emails at yet ANOTHER email address. God, I despise these people.
That’s “odious”.
I get the never ending swirl and then it times out. Maybe the obamabrats have hacked the party’s website?
I don’t think we should give up on this. If we jam their email system every day, it may have an effect. It may not. I believe it is definitely worth the effort!
The same goes for writing to news outlets. It may seem that they don’t pay attention to us. But Charlie Gibson paid attention, and he’s as big a shill as the rest of them. Do you think it was because of all the emails he received before the last debate? I think it was. Went right back to shilling the next day, but it got out the truth, and probably pushed the PA win to be bigger than it might have been.
Can’t hoit :-J!
I’ve given up on writing the DNC. I’ve emailed, faxed and snail mailed. All I get in response is dead air and like Uppity said, a stupid appeal for my money. Sorry. They know the right thing to do. They just aren’t doing it.
Thanks for posting this, Sonia. I just sent the following to Howard Dean, and will send it to the other two in a second:
“Before the Democratic National Committee and its officers are embarrassed beyond all measure (any further), you need to seat the Florida and Michigan delegates. A careful reading of the rules shows that this is perfectly within the DNC guidelines, and you do or should know that. If you do not seat the delegates, the eventual Democratic nominee will be seen as illegitimate. The only reason to not seat the delegates is if you don’t care if there’s a Democratic in the White House. It is your job to try and get the most qualified Dem elected, and so far you’re not doing that.
“Please stop biding your time and waiting around for no apparent reason other than to get Obama elected, and seat the delegates. Florida and Michigan voters deserve to be counted. Anything else is un-American and un-Democratic.”
The Fox News anchors keep asking WHY Rev. Wright would be getting more publicity now, and why he isn’t lying low.
It seems obvious to me why: Barry is having him appear in highly protective arenas — like the lofty Bill Moyers Journal and the National Press Club — where the questions will be lovingly polite and piety will rule.
Rev. Wright is being sanitized in order to protect Barry from those nasty 527 ads in North Carolina.
Well, they’re trying to clean him up. I don’t think it’ll work. But you never know. People can be very gullible.
I’ll have a bucket by my sofa when I watch Moyers on Friday night.
Agree….I don’t see how this guy will clean up…The longer he talks the more he reveals….Too late Barry…Black Separatism is what it is even when you wrap it in a baby jesus….
Racism is racism.
I’ve heard idiots try to argue that ONLY white folk are prejudiced/racist — that AA or Blacks cannot be racist.
To that I say Bull sh*t.
I was only a little kid and I felt the full force hatred of two of my teachers who happened to be black. The hated me for one reason — I was white. In retrospect it was a useful lesson — to hate someone merely because of the color of their skin is really a stupid reason to hate.
Wright is a hater — he hates white folk. And he is part of the back separatists movement — which is a soul male of the white separatists — neither are helpful to a strong and vibrant America.
Way back before MLK was assassinated there was a black liberation/black power group that broke away from the MLK civil rights movement. Wright seems to be part of the break away group.
Wright said what he said and the proof is on video! He can spin and twist all he wants — and lie all he wants. Gee will he sell is big new home and give the money to the poor? HA!
Susan, Bill Moyers is The Choir. It’s not as if Barry is going to wave his Hope-y Change-y wand and everybody else is going to forget. As it is, he blamed everybody else in the article again. Translation: white people, I am sure. Now I knew where Barry learned to blame everybody else for his own shortcomings.
It’s the same as this twisted logic…
Cheney shot Whittington in the face and Whittington APOLOGIZED.
Perhaps it’s time to purchase V-masks.
http://www.amazon.com/Rubies-Vendetta-FOR-VENDETTA-MASK/dp/B000J1BQVW/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=toys-and-games&qid=1209081843&sr=8-1
He has the same hair trigger that Barry does. And he appears to hate having to answer questions. Every time you see him on an interview he tries to keep talking so that he doesn’t have to answer your question. Kind of alike a troll.
He’s trying VERY HARD to keep it together during the interview. The pasted on smile is a hoot!
These show-boating reverends are unable to keep their faces off TV. Remember Jesse Jackson showed up at Terri Schaivo’s parents’ side? Al Sharpton was involved too, if I recall correctly.
Of course Barry is cleaning up Wright, Wright is Obama’s designate for Sec of State, after all, he did visit Lybia, makes him qualified!
It isn’t working. Chris Matthews, Margaret Carlson and Tucker were all over it this evening and they were slamming Obama. They also praised Hillary’s gumption in Pa. I thought I was hallucinating at first. The clips from the Moyers show were not helping Barack at all.
It’s about time people woke up to this. I think the NC Republican ad featuring Wright has also made it crystal clear. Why these fools could not have predicted this, I do not understand, but they are all over it now.
Indeed SusanUnPc; that’s the reason why he is also the keynote speaker in the upcoming NAACP. They are trying to rehabilitate Wright as a
“mainstream” guy. Since Obama can’t explain the unexplainable then the unexplainable (Wright) must become “natural”… Ugh…
Why will Bil Moyers interview him ?
Because Rev. Wright is in the news, and Bill Moyers is the consummate journalist.
I happen to think this has the makings of a rather fascinating discussion. Moyers is a gentleman, in that he will allow Pastor Wright to answer questions fully without interruption by the host, but neither will he back down from asking hard questions of the retired minister.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IN5StQAr7n0&feature=related
IS HE STILL TEACHING SOMEWHERE????
and who is twisting this black professor,s words….
and who twisted bill clinton,s words,,,when you guys twist everything of hill and bill ,,,,we at least saying it as it is ,with the proof,,,,,of ur videos mr wright,,,,
Yeah he’s probably in charge of race relations.
Spiritual committee?
Hahahaha. Yeah that’s it!
You can’t twist “God Damn America.” End of story.
No, but if you chop off the last half of what he is saying you understand where he’s coming from. The problem with this kind of selective quotation is this is how Republicans operate, not Democrats. Democrats should act more responsibly.
Republicans can repeat all the “Goddamn America” crap they want; Wright said Goddamn America for how it treats it’s minorities. If you look at the judicial system, he’s 100% correct. Republicans are also too obsessed by guns and the Second Amendment, they forget the First one.
Since a sentence with more than four words confuses a typical Republican voter, they drop the last half of his statements. The only critique I want to hear from Democrats is how Wright views AIDS as a insidious government plot. At first, I thought maybe he was referring to the inaction by Western governments which would be 100% accurate. Western indifference, and in the case of Bush’s Penecostal views about condoms, has allowed HIV problems to explode worldwide. Well, his views on AIDS are not controversial like his other statements, they’re simply incorrect and dangerous.
To me, those comments about AIDS as a government plot to kill black people is infinitely more insulting than his “Goddaman America” comments.
No one cares what you want to hear from Democrats. “God Damn America” stands alone. He is not saying, “Please, God, show America the error of her ways.” He is not saying, “Please help these poor people who were mistreated. He is anti-American, so he says “God Damn America.”
To someone who loves America, that indicates that “Reverend” Wright does not share that love. Those that love her want her to be the best she can be, not to be damned.
The AIDS thing just shows he’s a nut. And BO followed this insane father figure until it was time to throw him under the bus with grandma.
One cannot criticize the Republicans if we flop around in the slop with them.
You cannot fault Wright for his GD comments.
You really cannot fault Obama for his pastors comments.
You CAN fault Obama for dealing with the issue in such a purely amateurish fashion. Instead of asking why Reverend Hagee and Pat Robertson’s far worse comments have received far less prominence by the same media outlets, why is only Wright singled out?
Wright is only a threat because the Republicans will selectively use his comments over and over. Everyone know that is coming. The fact Obama refused to think a couple steps ahead is rather telling.
I am sorry.
These are issues that came into a political discussion for all of the wrong reasons.
Gerri Ferraro is not a racist. She said nothing different from what Barack Obama says on his own senate website:
“Obama acknowledges, with no small irony, that he benefits from his race.
If he were white, he once bluntly noted, he would simply be one of nine freshmen senators, almost certainly without a multimillion-dollar book deal and a shred of celebrity. Or would he have been elected at all?”
For me, what has happened with Reverend Wright is karma.
Wright made these comments in conjunction with 9.11. (A poster on Taylor’s site made this observation).
He is disgraceful, and must be seen in the context of Obama’s campaign: hatred, and fear and intimidation.
I have never seen a campagin Saul Alinsky itself.
And people want this idiot to be President?
Axelrod is as stupid as Rove.
I fault Obama for PURCHASING this man’s sermons on tape.
IMO, THAT’S very telling.
I can fault Wright for his God Damn comments.
I can fault BO for staying in this anti-American church for 20 years.
Why is it so difficult for some people to understand the difference between not going to a wacko pastor’s church, and going to one for two decades? Is it really that hard?
Of course I can blame Obama for having an intimate relationship with a bigot and nut such as Wright for 20 years, all of Obama’s adult life. It is a disgrace.
Thank you for being so open-minded, fair and non-judgmental.
Your ignorant comments are revelatory, in that you never listened to that particular sermon in its entirety, because in fact the Rev. Wright DID question why America wouldn’t help the poor.
You merely want to project your own particular brand of xenophobic / ehtnocentric vitriole, and Rev. Wright’s intemperate outburst conveniently provides you with an excuse to do so, and it will undoubtedly suffice until another excuse to do the same comes along.
Now, why don’t you go wrap yourself tightly in the American flag, and go outside to shoot a couple squirrels for dinner?
You may be appalled, but you are not a Clinton supporter.
The U.S. Constitution is a “covenant with death and an agreement with Hell,” said William Lloyd Garrison, THE leader of the abolitionist movement in 19th-century America.
Sometimes conditions warrant a jeremiad. I don’t think what Wright said was right - especially, as you note, the propogation of the HIV conspiracy theory - but I understand what led him to that angry place.
What led him to his unhappy place is that US GOVT. ISSUE CRACK…or have’nt you heard of that crime as well…There is no defense for him and the fact you would even try is reprehensible….Friz you are a lost cause and a huge delusional liberal wannabe who knows nothing…Your neo liberal flim flamming is unethical and like your candidate a sham….You are the worst of hypocrites….
Hey, cheers to you, too!
And you’re a neo-con clown. So there.
Sometimes conditions warrant a jeremiad
I don’t think that word means what you think it means.
From wikipedia:
That sounds like Pastor Wright to me.
…usually followed by people running from the building.
“God Damn America” isn’t a lament or a warning. It is an order. You know, a warning would have been something that could have slipped under the radar, perhaps. I mean, a pastor’s job is to warn people of the error of their ways.
This is not that. This is an order to God to do the worst thing he can to us. What kind of a citizen does that? Terrorists want that for America.
Then you are either deaf or have a hearing and comprehension disability.
After Obama called his loving grandmother a “typical white person,” it’s obvious that he drank deeply from Rev. Wright’s philosophies. Obama and Wright have merged into one person in the nation’s psyche.
The “typical white person” thing was a stupid comment.
But if you listen to the rest of that interview - which none of you ever do - you’ll hear him totally win over Angelo Castaldi’s crew on WIP, who are blue-collar Philly to the core.
I’ve heard the whole interview. It’s embarrassing. There’s no context acceptable for Obama’s comment, or Wright’s hate sermons for that matter. Obama must drop out, for the good of the country and party.
Because what he really meant was…
Not as dumb as calling the proles “bitter” in front of a secret Inner Party meeting.
+1 for Orwell reference.
Obama is like herpes. The gift that keeps on giving.
]
Why? we do, we just don’t buy your BS “interpretation”.
You nailed it, yobama was mentored by this hate spewing pile of crap for over 20 years. They are tied at the hip.
The fact that yobama compared his grandmother to this miscreant in order to save him, shows how deep the loyalty runs. Politically I can’t think of a another politician in the last 30 years who would throw one their parents under the bus to save a racist and conspiracy nut.
Even LaRouche has more decency that Obama.
Yeah…I don’t think even Nixon would’ve done that….
Barry also mentions somewhere he’d like to ‘expunge’ the blood of his typical white grandmother from his body.
Nice guy.
GOD DAMN BARACK OBAMA.
He’s not going to expunge me. I will help expunge him from the political process.
Bud White, I enjoy your work.
Obama and Wright have merged into one
Next some will be blamed for allowing that to happen.
Like some unruly child reaching for the candy at the check out.
I think that I could happily have lived my entire bitter, typical white existence and not have been any the poorer if I had never heard the words of Reverend Wright.
I have attended High Holy Day services within days of Jewish settlers being attacked and the Rabbi called upon God for peace and understanding. Walking through the parking lot to our cars, it was not difficult to imagine the terror of the innocents. We live in a country that until 9/11 has never known terror. To invoke God’s damnation upon us is an abomination for which I have no forgiveness in me.
Did William Lloyd Garrison run for POTUS?
Your kind of “thinking” is what loses Democrats elections. Instead of just condemning Wright’s idiot statements, you want to analyze them for truth. You want to sort through the manure to find the budding flowers. You want us to defend this stupid dick, because that’s more important than winning this election.
Well, excuse me, but I don’t believe it is. You go defend Wright all you want. Feel warm and fuzzy about yourself when you are done. We adults are trying to win an election and wrest control from the people who are currently destroying this country. I don’t give a fat rat’s ass if Wright has a “point.” He’s an odious moron and if the Democratic party commits itself to defending him for Obama’s sake, we will go down in flames.
You want to throw yourself in front of Wright and defend him? Feel free. Leave my party out of it.
John after your post, we don’t need to say another thing.
John, I hereby nominate you to replace Howard Dean. Boy does the Party ever need someone who is an adult!
I second that…John for party dude….
let’s take a vote - john win!
oops, obama won’t let us vote.
Why are we, the Democrats, obsessed about Wright? While I agree Hillary is far and away superior to Obama, Obama is far and away superior to McCain.
Wright is one of Obama’s many gifts to the GOP. That’s a no brainer. The Democrats cannot be ridiculed as the GOP then says the Democrats as a whole are obsessed with Wright.
Wright isn’t the problem, per se. It’s how the Republicans will use them against Obama. And there is REAL issue. Wright seriously undermines Obama, among a great many things.
Stop the hate on Wright. Concentrate on how Obama is unbelievably weak because of Wright.
I also want to start seeing more Democrats getting ready to hit back with Robertson and Hagee should Obama get the nomination. Wright may be wrong sometimes, the GOP Jesusfreaks are wrong all the time…
Let’s also not end up sounding like a broken record with the constant drone of Wright, Wright, Wright.
Let’s not forget the others like Ayers.
It’s so hard to keep up with all of them. lol.
Wright is NOW. HE chose to go national again. he is relevant at this moment. That is why we are talking about him. Again.
Yeah, but he’s also got the personality to admit he’s wrong.
Ayers comes across as unable. To me, Ayers is the better “Willie Horton” for the GOP anyway. To say publicly just after 911 that his only regret was that he didn’t do enough bombmaking.
Because I feel outraged by Wright’s bigotry, comments and by Obama’s total lack of judgment. Wright comments and the way he carries his
“message” are repugnent to me and I find equally disgusting that Obama has chosen to cultivate a 20 years intimate relationship with that man. That relationship surely make a lasting impression on Obama and I don’t like what that print is.
Obama is far and away superior to McCain.
No.
thank you. completely agree.
if we go along with the obama/dean/kerry/kennedy/pelosi hostile takeover of the democratic party, there’s no party left. far worse than 4 years of mccain followed by getting our party back.
What would John Adams say? What principle is there to defend?
All these attempts a religious nullification by Obama and Wright, is laughable if it was not so GOD DAMN dangerous.
OT: 7500 Cubans got cell phones for the first time this week… 90 miles south of Florida, they are getting cell phones, but the votes of Floridians? Thats a different matter.
Why does Obama remind me of Mickey Mouse in the dungeon with a mop ‘n bucket and it’s starting to flood…oops. “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice”,Obama is trrrroublllle. Ou We!
The Rev. talks like a preacher and Obama is “just” talking like a “typical politician”, according to him.
I agree. Rev. Wright is better than Obama at throwing people under the bus. He taught Obama everything he knows.
Excellent post John. Thank you!
This is idiotic.
You don’t say
Godddamn to something that will bite you in the ass later.
He’s cursing from the pulpit, I’m in the South and this is totally unacceptable behavior in a church, any church, black, white, evangelical- it is SACRILEGE!!! And as far as Catholics, strictly forbidden to say GD in every person I know that was raised Catholic’s family, including mine. You just don’t say GD…part of BOs problems with the Catholic vote may just go back to this. It was drummed into us in Catholic school - “though shalt not take the Lord’s name in vain”… Even though I no longer consider myself Catholic, due to my upbringing, I was simply blown away by the cursing from the pulpit and the derogatory comments made of Hillary and Bill also.
Absolutely! I can’t wait to see him try to spin away his humping the pulpit while remarking about Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky. I can’t imagine what theological issue (even from the perspective of Black Liberation Theology) could ever justify such vulgarity in any church.
BTW, I dearly dearly hope that the tax-exempt status of that f**kkking church gets yanked.
Black liberation theology justifies anything said that is ANTI-WHITE…Check it out….Read for yourself…..
And the congregation fucking cheered.
THATS THE PROBLEM!
All whackjob churches have their special congregation.
I know some want to continue slamming Obama’s church, but what happens if he does the smart thing and takes (or is forced to take) the VP slot with Clinton?
The mud on Obama might affect Clinton, which is why the arguments against Obama should be contained to how the GOP would use Wright.
I’m hoping everyone agrees that turnabout is fairplay and we give the GOP the “Wright” treatment by emphasizing Hagee and Robertson…
Clinton/Obama will probably lose my vote. Obama/Clinton will definitely lose my vote.
Clinton/any mangy half-dead dog will get my vote.
ditto.
There is no comparison to Hagee and Robertson. In fact I saw John McCain on TV TODAY, repudiating that correlation, as well he should. He did not sit in church for 20 F*****ING years listening to HIS pastor preach this garbage. Hagee and Robertson are not the pastors of McCain’s church.
I’m plenty pissed about the sheer idiocy of BO, he is going to bring down ticket dems down, he should have left that church at least two years before running for president, what an idiot.
Perhaps that’s why BO does so poorly in debates, he doesn’t understand what makes a good argument and what doesn’t.
They weren’t cheering. They were panicking because at that precise moment there’d been an invasion of cockroaches and termites.
thanks for the clips. had seen the wright stuff before, but not the fox segment. colmes is truly disgusting in his attempt to whitewash - oops, racial slur? - wright’s crap into something good.
fully expect to hear wright’s latest attempt to blame us for his crap spouted from the obamabots ad nauseum.
Colmes is the canary in the pit.
Study his resonse well because it’s all the dems will be able to do.
Colmes is bizarre. Tonight he was defending the “chickens coming home to roost” comment by saying that was another person’s (Malcolm X) quote Wright was using. WTF???
I just think this guy is a nut! If this was turned around and this was a white pastor saying this stuff about black people everyone would be outraged? Right?
Well he would be called racist.
AxleRove must have poured over the polling data and determined that Wright is what killed Obama in PA…..
Now their trying to soften the edges on Obama’s mentor.
Nice try. Obama has become radioactive to the country, to many Democrats, to all good people who hate racism.
The real question is: will the Democratic Party reject all racism? Or is some racism OK? Obama wants us to believe that there are some contexts which make Rev. Wright’s words OK. I disagree.
I say if it aint right comin out of the mouth of a cracker…It aint right comin out of anyone else’s mouth….Nuff said….
Facts are stubborn things.
Video doesn’t lie.
