Barack Obama, from his March 2008 Philadelphia speech on race:
“I believe that Americans will judge me not on the basis of what someone else said, but on the basis of who I am and what I believe in; on my values, judgment and experience to be President of the United States.”
Barack Obama’s JUDGMENT was that Jeremiah Wright was his “close spiritual adviser” for 20 years until the media bought the CDs of Wright’s sermons, for sale publicly, and simply played excerpts from the sermons that Wright himself and his church had CHOSEN for inclusion on those for-profit CDs.
Barack Obama’s JUDGMENT is that the character and abilities of the new pastor Otis Moss are such that he will continue to be a member of Trinity. Well, that’ll last until the media more widely plays the videos of THOSE sermons — and quite possibly more videos we haven’t seen yet — and then undoubtedly Obama will do another fast backtrack.
Larry Johnson had a great conversation with his own former pastor of many years recently, and wrote about the talk in his story here, “What Would Tip O’Neill Do About Barack’s Pastors?” That retired pastor told Larry a story about a truly WISE politician, who KNEW what to do:
Too bad Tip O’Neill is dead, because Barack Obama could benefit from his wisdom. I had a conversation last night with my pastor, a man named Calvin. He is like Jeremiah Wright in only one aspect–he has retired from his official duties. Unlike Wright, I have never heard a hateful, vile, or racist rant from him and he continues working to touch the lives of people.
As we discussed the Wright rant, my former pastor recounted the words of Tip O’Neill, the former Speaker of the House, as they played golf twenty years ago. The subject was the role of pastors in speaking out on hot political topics. Tip told Cal:
Politicians need to learn an important skill. If you are hearing things that go against your values you get up and walk out.
The common sense of Tip O’Neill is sorely lacking in the life and campaign of Barack Obama. Most Americans have already seen clips of Wright’s racist and hateful rants. But he’s not the only religious adviser close to Barack with a knack for intemperate comments. Consider the following gentlemen.
“If you are hearing things that go against your values you get up and walk out.”
Can it get any simpler than that?
Obama can hold a press conference every day from now until June, and it won’t erase the KNOWLEDGE that people NOW have about him: That he sat in those pews for 20 years and heard the same narcassistic, hate-filled, anti-American “bull” from Jeremiah Wright that we were all subjected to on our television sets from Friday through Monday morning.
In “When it suits his all-consuming political ambitions, at the time …,” I wrote:
[W]hen it suited his political “aspirations” in 2004 during his U.S. Senate run — Obama couldn’t get close enough to Rev. Wright and his church. From the Chicago Sun-Times, April 5, 2004:
These days, he says, he attends the 11 a.m. Sunday service at Trinity in the Brainerd neighborhood every week — or at least as many weeks as he is able. His pastor, Wright, has become a close confidant.
Obama can’t unring this bell.
Obama can’t deny knowing that his own church sold the now-infamous Wright sermons on CDs to make money.
Obama can’t deny having seen and/or read the church’s bulletins, full of anti-American writings.
Obama can’t deny having been married by Wright or having his two beautiful little girls baptized by Wright.
Obama can’t deny who he is: An opportunistic politician who can’t get close enough to someone like Wright when it helps, and who can’t run fast enough when it most certainly doesn’t help.
And Obama can’t lessen Wright’s impact by pointing to that “wonderful” new pastor because — thank god — we have tapes these days. We have YouTube these days. And we can see that that “wonderful” new pastor, Otis Moss, is preaching the same divisive, racist rhetoric that Wright did.

Afterthought: It is heartening that few of America’s predominantly black churches preach racist hate and separatism, according to NPR’s Juan Williams.
It is therefore all the more disturbing that Obama chose one of the small minority of churches that used hate, distrust of whites, and anti-Americanism to rev up its parishioners.
Obama probably wouldn’t have gotten the visibility — and the aid to his all-consuming political ambition — had he attended one of the more progressive, and probably smaller and less influential, black churches. But he would have been able, during this presidential race, to present himself as someone who, as Tip O’Neill did, got up and walked out, and instead sought a more mentally healthy atmosphere in which to worship.
It is, however, very worrisome to me that such churches exist and make boatloads of money from selling such hate. Their more impressionable parishioners can be forever affected, scarred, and wrongly influenced by such racist speech.
But this is a free country. No matter what Jeremiah Wright — and many of his parishioners, including ____ ? — may think of it. And they are free to preach their hate speech.
Maybe it’s not such a bad country after all.

I just listened to the second mov, and maybe because I come from the south, and understand the culture the style comes out of, thought it was just good, old fashioned preaching with roots in the African tradition.
My problem with Wright was not the style. Wright preached HATE.
This sermon was about love. I actually found it moving.
There is a reference in that sermon to a song. Listen to the song then you should see the point clearly.
Honestly, I don’t see the big deal either. I listened to the song, and it is as objectionable as Reverend Wright’s comments. However, after watching the second video which contains more of Reverend Moss’ sermon it appears as though he was just using the song as a cultural reference. His sermon seems to reflect the same message that this lapsed catholic heard many times in church.
I agree here. Moss’ sermon is clearly in the AA tradition that the Obamaphiles want us to see Wright’s in. But Wright’s were different.
Moss’ Easter sermon is fairly standard exposition on the Cross. No rant there.

i was channel surfing this morning and happened on an aa preacher. i went back to listen and appreciated the fact that he was warning them about false credit scams. christian? i think so as that would part of the abudant life. the shame to me is there are so many good christian aa ministers.

He has not put himself in a very good spot. I left this at the thread on media coverage. The writer here makes an excellent point about talking to the black voter versus the white voter … He’s gone as far as he can go in pursuit of votes he’s not going to get any way. He is more liable to piss off more people — like he did when he “knuckled under” and went on FOX. The white media is not his constituency. They’re just the cheerleaders.
On Tuesday, Obama responded to the Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s ill-timed defense by condemning his former pastor’s fresh comments as “ridiculous,” “outrageous” and “appalling.”
“When he states and then amplifies such ridiculous proposition as the U.S. government somehow being involved in AIDS, when he suggests that Minister Farrakhan somehow represents one of the greatest voices in the 20th and 21st century, when he equates the United States wartime effort with terrorism, then there are no excuses,” Obama said during a press conference.
“They offend me. They rightfully offend all Americans and they should be denounced,” Obama said.
This is a sad day for Black America.
At a time when African Americans are on the cusp of watching a barrier come crashing down, up jumps a divisive issue that is being driven by those outside of the black community.
Obviously, Wright’s timing for a press conference about his sermons couldn’t have been worse.
Still, when Obama says he is “offended” by Wright’s latest comments — given in defense against an orchestrated assault on his character and on his ministry — he’s opening up a can of worms.
There is no institution in the black community more respected than the black church. And the notion that white pundits can dictate what constitutes unacceptable speech in the black church is repulsive to most black people.
Even so, after Wright’s fiery speeches surfaced on the Internet, most African Americans understood why Obama had to distance himself from Wright.
Obama’s cross-cultural appeal, which, by the way, made some blacks suspicious of him early in his campaign, is largely because of his ability to make white people feel comfortable with his blackness.
But Wright speaks to a different audience, and that audience has been supportive throughout his ordeal.
On Monday, for instance, when Wright spoke at the National Press Club, the predominantly black crowd cheered, clapped and punctuated Wright’s speech with shouts of “amen.”
So, when Obama says America was “offended” by Wright’s harsh language, he isn’t speaking for or to Black America. He is speaking to White America.
As much as I want to see Obama make history by becoming the first black man to be elected president, I don’t want to see a warrior like Wright denigrated to prove to white voters that Obama is not a radical.
When Obama denounced Wright’s angry words but refused to disown him, it signaled that he understood the sensitive tightrope he is being forced to walk.
His “outrage” over Wright’s latest remarks signals something quite different. With the gap narrowing, Obama advisers are obviously scrambling for every white vote.
But really, what more should blacks have to sacrifice? Their dignity?
Frankly, Obama and Wright risk becoming metaphors for the ongoing struggle of blacks to unite politically.
Obama shouldn’t have held a press conference to deal with Wright.
He should have been able to pick up the phone.

This guy is a dual U.S.-Iraqi citizen who broke out of a Baghdad jail in 2006, has been listed as part of the Rezko investigation. He was the Electrical Minister to Iraq and Rezko is accused of giving him a 1.5 million dollar bribe for the electrical contract contract to train Iraqi power plant security guards.

“I’m a little surprised at how much traction it is getting, and I do believe it is beginning to reflect negatively on Senator Obama’s campaign,” Ms. Macoll said. “I think he’s handling it very well, but I think it’s almost impossible to make people feel comfortable about this.”
The most telling thing here, “It’s almost impossible to make people feel comfortable about this.” So right - the American people are not stupid. OB still insists that he never heard/knew of this type of speech. One would have to be naive and suspended from reality to believe this.
Hopefully NC & IN will finish him and he and his pastor can feud in private.

Obama now using the words “church community” that he felt was so important to him and not the words or rantings of Rev Wright. The videos of those rantings of Wright all over youtube sure seemed to be spoken to a packed church! So what does that say of Obama’s chosen community he is now attempting to use as an excuse?
Well Obama’s community consists of the parisheners who go crazy over Wright’s vile preaching, Tony Rezko, Bill Ayers, Bernadine Dohrn, Uncle Wright and Michelle Robinson Obama. What a scarey community to consider yourself a part and subject your chidren to, what does that say about judgement?
Greta Van Susteren had a minister, Myron Cloyd, on from Houston last night who has known Wright for 25 years. The pastor says he felt Obama should have distanced himself from Wright “2-3 years ago,” because there was “no way who Rev. Wright is and always has been” was not going to be a problem for Obama.
2. Toward the end of the interview, the pastor says that what Obama called a “spectacle” yesterday at the National Press Club is what Jeremiah Wright has been doing all over the country for years. It was the same Jeremiah Wright he has heard for years.

Karen– I saw this Rev. with Greta last night. He’s one of her semi-regulars. Just the night before and definitely all of the other nights, he was singing Rev. Wright’s praises. How his performance with Moyers, and the NAACP dinner was great, great, great. Hell, coming to think about it… every one from Geraldo to Montel to Soledad O’Brien, said “Rev. Wright hit a homerun… right out of the ball park…” Now, he’s persona non-grata. That’s amazing.
BO says it’s cool, Wright is his uncle, so everyone in lockstep — Wright’s cool. BO says Wright is bad news, then everyone in lockstep– Wright is a stark, mad, raving lunatic.

Generally, this fellow preached Christian love in the old-style black church tradition.
Christian churches, especially in the deep south, have always bothered me the way most blame Jews for the demise of Jesus, and this preacher touched it as well. It could easily be expanded into anti semitism, and often does, but he did not, at least at this point.
I would expect an individual as educated as Obama to want his daughters acquainted with a calmer spirituality, but maybe he feels it would be turning them away from their roots. I don’t know.

Well….We are discussing the relationship between Liberation Theology and politics as the two are inseparable especially with regards to Black Separatism. Now this does require at least the ability to grasp fundemantal theological concepts and history.

He gives an “historic” speech where he once again proves he is a liar and no one in the media sees fit to cover it.
He puts Gerri Ferraro in the same sentence as the anti-Cracker and throws granma from a moving train with Jerry’s help.
We have been subjected to an unnecessary social exercise in the middle of a POLITICAL SEASON because the twerp sat in the pews of a hate-spewing upper middle class black preacher!

Yet McCain and Clinton’s pastors remain almost totally untouched.
I’ve got to say, even though I come from an entirely different cultural place (Jewish female from the northeast and a Clinton supporter to boot) but I didn’t see anything hateful or inappropriate in Otis Moss’ sermon. Just because the style was different, and he was speaking the vernacular of his congregation, doesn’t make it bad or wrong, just different. He appears to me, in fact, to be a responsible and very effective preacher.
Wright was wrong, no doubt about that, but from the videos you have shown, Otis Moss is not.
Lets be careful on the things we pick on and publicize lest we be guilty of the same behaviors we criticize in many of the Obama supporters.
cj– I wholeheartedly agree with what you are saying in general. However, I do not believe that the values of the Church are mutually exlusive of Jeremiah Wright. I think that they are the values of the entire Church at Trinity, as a whole. If that were not the case, there wouldn’t be that many congregants left at Trinity after Wright left. I also believe that Moss has just switched places with Wright, a younger version. Wright may be gone, but what he represents, his core values have remained. There is a theme of victimization and oppression running throughout that Church that is inherrently unhealthy and at times, racist.

My fiance is Black and his father is a Pastor of his Church — the themes of Moss/Trinity/Wright are not the themes that I have heard at his Church or any of the othe myriad of Black Churches I’ve attended many times before. They are not, as the defenders of Trinity would say, indicative of the “Black Church” because they are antithical to Wright’s Church. IMHO — the majority of Black Churches in America are NOT like Wright’s Church.

This is sad but true. As a Latina, living and working in the inner city. I know precisely what Wright was speaking about. However, it was how the message was delivered — loaded with racist anger and indignation towards the rich, powerful Whites, Jews, Romans, etc. We have choices. We choose either to stay angry and imprisoned by this mentality or we choose not to. Obviously, Obama chose to stay for over 20 years at a Church, that for all of its high points of community activism, was/is plagued with the low-points exemplified by Wright, and now Moss.
Agree….Wright has tried to imply that his is a AA mainstream church.
Wrights’ is a theology that is BLACK LIBERATION THEOLOGY AND BLACK SEPARATIST.
This is why he is at a non-denominational church.

The video where Rev Moss says that he wishes he could say it like Ice Cube is scary. It really makes me mad/sad that this is what is being preached in many churches.
