The Gas Nazi: No Tax Relief for You!

Cross posted at my blog.

Gas NaziBarack Obama has taken a stand. He doesn’t support lowering your taxes. In fact, he considers doing so a political stunt. What I am of course referring to is his adamant opposition to proposed the federal tax holiday on gasoline this summer. Obama is against it for several reasons, none of them genuine. First he opposed to it because John McCain proposed it. Then he opposed it because Hillary proposed something similar. But instead of offering McCain’s deficit increasing measure Hillary insisted it be paid for.

Obama Takes Heat for Opposing Gas Tax Holiday

“Senator Clinton is following Senator McCain’s lead. I mean, McCain was the first one to come out with this and Senator Clinton said `me too,’” Obama said.

So poor ole Barack feels tag teamed and as everyone knows, he doesn’t like a lot of pressure. Instead he prefers to eat waffles. Or is that just waffle?

A little examination into that elusive record of Senator Obama’s reveals a little known fact. He was for a gas tax holiday before he was against it. No wonder John Kerry supports him so readily.

Fact Check: Obama and the gas taxes

Democratic Sen. Barack Obama accuses his presidential rivals of pandering to voters by supporting the “gimmick” of temporarily lifting federal taxes on gasoline, despite his own past support for a similar tax holiday.

As a state legislator voting for a tax break, Obama even joked that he wanted signs on gas pumps telling motorists that he was responsible for lowering prices.

A damned shame something pesky like a fact or two has to enter this debate. Otherwise Senator Obama would be able to bamboozle the rest of us about his support for working families struggling to get by day to day. Because the way Senator Obama sees things this tax break business is just Washington as usual politics.

“This is the problem with Washington. We are facing a situation where oil prices could hit $200 a barrel. Oil companies like Shell and BP just reported record profits for the quarter. And we’re arguing over a gimmick that would save you half a tank of gas over the course of the entire summer so that everyone in Washington can pat themselves on the back and say that they did something,” Obama says.

Senator Obama seems to be confusing Washington for Chicago style politics. Because by his own admission, that was the purpose of him voting three times to eliminate the gas tax in Illinois. It was a campaign gimmick. And don’t think for a moment that Senator Obama was merely joking with his comment.

In 2000, gasoline prices were climbing quickly, reaching $2 a gallon in the Chicago area — a remarkable price back then. Illinois legislators scrambled to offer some election-year relief to angry motorists.

Obama voted three times for a tax holiday.

The version that ended up becoming law required a six-month suspension of the state’s share of the sales tax on gasoline, a 5 percent tax paid directly by consumers rather than gas stations. It also required gas stations to post signs on their pumps saying that the Illinois General Assembly had lowered taxes and the price should reflect that cut.

Senator Obama clearly understands what a political gimmick is. He has plenty of experience participating in them. His voting three times for a tax holiday in Illinois is a prime example. But Obama also likes to project his past experience in Illinois upon Washington D.C.. It’s a case of misguided transference. And it is designed to hide his own record in Illinois as well as hoodwink the public so that they don’t remember that HE voted for the Bush-Cheney-Obama Energy Bill that put us in this situation to begin with. And his plan? Blame Hillary for playing politics.

He says a tax holiday would provide consumers little real relief, ignore the country’s energy problems and take money from road and bridge repairs.

Cue the obnoxious buzzer: Wrong! Hillary’s plan DOES NOT take money away from road and bridge repairs. That is John McCain’s plan. Hillary pays for the tax relief by taxing the windfall profits of oil companies. Those very same windfall profits that Senator Obama made possible. The very same oil companies that contribute so heavily to his campaign. But I am sure Senator Obama doesn’t want you to remember that. He wants to change the subject by attacking Hillary for offering SOME relief to people that are crying out for help. And just what does Senator Obama offer?

Sorry, I  didn’t quite hear that. Can you repeat it? Huh? I must be going deaf. Because all I hear are crickets.

Senator Obama likes to demean the concept of offering citizens some relief to the ever increasing fuel prices. He acts as if a 18.4 cent per gallon tax relief is no big deal. That us common folk wouldn’t even benefit from it. I wonder if he has seen the long lines of motorists waiting to fill up when the prices at any station are only 10 cents less than the rest? Surely he either hasn’t seen it or his elite ass doesn’t frickin care. I know plenty of people that will drive 15 miles just to get gas at 15 cents less per gallon than what they pay for in their own neighborhood. PLENTY OF PEOPLE. It isn’t unusual. And when people pay less they feel like they have done something good for their family and are willing to spend more on other things thus stimulating the economy.

Now an elitist might not think that way. Perhaps only the price of arugula means something to them. But us regular folk that have to pay for our own transportation and fuel, and have to actually work for a living actually care about the cost of gasoline. And we want, no we demand some relief!

So if Senator Obama is too busy listening to the sound of his own voice that he loves so much to offer ordinary Americans some tax relief we will answer in kind. And hear this clearly Senator Obama: There will be no votes for you!

Oil companies are making a fortune while the rest of us scramble to pay for gas. Taking mass transit is no picnic and their rates are rising also. I haven’t heard Obama say anything specific as to what he will do for the economy….make change(no pun intended) tell us how!

Comment by simon, too | 2008-05-02 12:00:46

And knowing how much more of my money is going toward gas, when I went grocery shopping this morning, I forgo the Soy Protein I buy (veggie burgers, and such) figuring I’d make do with what I have, cheese.

So I didn’t buy at least ten dollars worth of items, due to higher gas prices and it’s impact on my budget.

This affects Morning Star (the manufacturer), Morning Stars suppliers, and Target, at the very least.

And we understand this trickle down effect, right?

Now apply that thinking to the greater asymmetric war strategy, “one thing leads to another.”

They can’t, they get overwhelmed, and they can’t deal with the truth, past their specious, fantasies of a Starussian world, ie “if I only torture more, they will obey.”

Again, Kevin Federline, all the way down…

And once they understand it’s a bit more complex than “shock and awe” they panic, and they simply dont know what to do, our big bad White House, and Congress…

Again, vote Clinton.

Comment by Rick Rottman | 2008-05-02 10:20:48

They should suspend the Federal gas tax. Not only for the Summer, but forever.

Why are they taxing gasoline? We buy gasoline not because it is some sort of luxury item that we reward ourselves with, but it is something we need to get us from one place to another. For better or worse, it’s literary the fuel we need to be productive citizens.

Comment by Bob Sakowski | 2008-05-02 10:48:03

Gasoline taxes, both state and federal, are intended to be used to maintain the network of highways.

Comment by Pagan Power | 2008-05-02 10:52:29

Agreed. They are important taxes. That is why Hillary’s plan is the superior one. She gives tax relief without taking money out of the highway fund.

Comment by BernieO | 2008-05-02 14:07:38

Another criticism is that since supplies are tight in the summer, dropping the tax may not lower prices anyway. However, Hillary also is proposing stopping the addition of oil to our strategic reserves, and releasing some of it to add to the supply thus taking pressure off prices. She also is advocating investigating evidence (which she says Congress has) that oil prices are being manipulated the way that Enron did with natural gas prices.

She specifically ties her plan to inflation, pointing out that gas prices are a big factor in the cost of things like food. Her plan could well help slow the rate of inflation, taking some air out of the bubble.

Comment by simon, too | 2008-05-02 17:29:30

Very pertinent, why hasn’t Obama brought this point up, and suggested the American people are being deliberately ripped off, with political help?

Trolls?

Comment by Rick Rottman | 2008-05-02 11:29:14

It isn’t like the money goes into a special fund set aside just for roads. It goes into the same massive fund that all taxes go to.

To maintain the infrastructure of the country.

Would you be interested in starting a war in Iraq, Rick?

Obama is getting huge amounts of help from the alleged “journalists” in the media, who are constantly trying to tell us that McCain and Hillary are offering basically the same plan, while Saint Obama refuses to pander, taking the high road, blah blah blah.

Obama’s solution: Nothing. Laugh and quip. “Reject this Inside Washington kind of plan.”

Your cars? Let them eat Waffles.

Comment by Mary Jo Kopechne | 2008-05-02 10:34:46

This is the kind of elitism that drives (pun) me crazy. I know so many young families in which both mom and dad have to commute in different directions to their jobs. A gas tax holiday would mean money for their kids to go to the pool a few times a week over the summer.

This is why Dems lose elections. This is felt-need elitism.

Comment by John | 2008-05-02 11:14:54

The worst part is that the sneering rejection of Hillary’s plan by Obama is not accompanied by any plan of his own. It’s just negative. Maybe he should change the chant to “No We Can’t.”

Comment by Uppity | 2008-05-02 12:25:06

Not only that, but his rejection of a bit of relief at the gas tank isn’t going to fly well with all those poor ‘hicks’ he looks down his nose at—whose votes he would need in November, and won’t get. They are going to say, Let Obama eat arugula.

Comment by jwrjr | 2008-05-02 12:32:01

That is Mr. Waffle all around. He complains about how things are and says that they need to be fixed, but offers no plan on how to fix them. In the campaign ads, he complains but never promises to improve anything.

Comment by simon, too | 2008-05-02 11:37:28

OTOH, Hillary looks good, while Obama is inadvertently helping to float the trial balloon of “tough love” that MUST come with either Clinton or McCain as President, and taking the brunt of the scorn.

I mean, Obama has nothing to lose at this point, though he doesn’t know it, he’s a joke.

Harmful, Divisive And Fallacious Petition From Color Of Change
By Big Tent Democrat, Section Elections 2008

Color of Change is circulating an outrageous, deplorable and fallacious petition:

Leaders of the Democratic Party are playing a dangerous game — risking the credibility of the party to hand Hillary Clinton the nomination against the will of voters. Heading down this path means disenfranchising millions of voters and legitimizing a campaign strategy that has displayed a clear pattern of race baiting and divisive politics.
If Hillary Clinton wins the popular vote and the Super Delegates hand the nomination to Barack Obama, the Democratic Party will have acted against the will of the voters. Despite that, I would whole heartedly support Barack Obama’s candidacy in November. In addition, Color of Change falsely smears the Clinton campaign while engaging in race baiting and divisive politics itself. Color of Change smears not only Hillary Clinton, but the millions of Democrats who support her.

As a Latino, I denounce and reject Color of Change’s petition. It is an outrageous, divisive, racially polarizing and deplorable act. At a time when all Democrats should be thinking about unifying the democratic Party behind our eventual nominee, who in all likelihood will be Barack Obama, Color of Change acts to exacerbate divisions. This petition hurts the Democratic Party and it hurts Barack Obama’s chances to win in November. Color of Change’s petititon should be rejected by Democrats of all stripes.

By Big Tent Democrat, speaking for me only.

Rasmussen: 58% Say Obama Tossed Wright For Political Reasons

A new Rasmussen poll is out:

A Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that just 30% of the nation’s Likely Voters believe Barack Obama denounced his former Pastor, Jeremiah Wright, because he was outraged. Most—58%–say he denounced the Pastor for political convenience. The survey was conducted on Wednesday and Thursday night. Obama made his statements about Wright on Tuesday.

Glad to hear that. I listened to an NPR report where they interviewed African Americans in North Carolina. One lady stated that Jeremiah Wright was a prophet. I mean, where do they find these fruitcakes? No offense to fruitcakes implied.

The trolls (where are they, getting lobotomies?) might go meshuge over the “Nazi” reference. I understand the author’s use of the term since Internet censors are sometimes referred to as “Net Nazi’s” although I prefer the term “thought police.”

If the trolls do go meshuge, they would open the floodgates since there are arguably many parallels to the ascension to power of Hilter and Obama’s attempt to rise to power. I am speaking as to modus operandi only. I don’t know if we want to have that debate but it could be argued to be a fair comparison. I don’t even know if I would participate in such a debate: one must pick their battles in this life.

Thought I would try to prevent the obvious war that could erupt here. I think it will erupt anyway though. The trolls are pretty shallow and key in on any perceived weakness or vulnerability they see.

Comment by Pagan Power | 2008-05-02 11:02:24

My intent was a play off from the Soup Nazi character on Seinfeld. Nothing more. But yes, trolls get all kinds of bizarre things in their heads. And if they think that they will be able to twist something around to discredit someone they will most certainly do so. It’s a good thing I don’t care in the least what they say.

Comment by Garlic-Nosed Guitarist | 2008-05-02 11:13:43

I did not “get” the soup Nazi reference, not being a viewer of that sitcom. I guess that’s obvious. :)

Comment by simon, too | 2008-05-02 11:46:38

Trolls overestimate their power, and think they have the last word on dirty tricks.

Worked real well for Cheney, and Bush, and Obama, didn’t’ it?

let’s see ,they’re wrapped in a cocoon of false security, and confusion, chaos, while Pat Fitzgerald, and many in the government, are vociferously defending the Constitution. And the trolls are losing, but for the life of them, can’t figure out why.

Meanwhile, the economy, military, and our political infrastructure are falling apart.

They can’t fix that, either.

Bright, bright boys.

I remember reading, a few years back, Bush intended to control reaction to the Iraqi war, and win it, with the use of “statistics, a couple of statisticians” from Yale, or Harvard or one of the other Ive League trade schools for mediocre people with no talent, but plenty of arrogance, who lose wars.

ROTFLMAO

My goodness, they would have been better off hiring a bunch of stupid bloggers…

Oh, wait…

Dont’ cry, babies, don’t cry…

I cannot even begin to say what I think of Nancy Pelosi.

I will just say I will be supporting Maxine Waters or Tubbs-Jones or Jackson-Lee to take her place.
And if I can’t get someone who has the ability of any of these three women, then:

I will also be supporting my next door neighbor’s cat to take her place.

My friend’s back yard furniture to take her place.

The stuff on my tennis shoe to take her place.

She is the worst I believe I have ever seen.

What a petulant little fart she truly is.

Comment by Garlic-Nosed Guitarist | 2008-05-02 10:50:54

All Pelosi accomplishes by denying debate on the gas tax holiday is she provides further proof to the American people that she and others are ganging up on Hillary, and America loves the underdog.

So she is helping Hillary by hurting the American people. How ironic.

People in the heartland have a certain wisdom that Hillary knows all about, but Obama and Pelosi are obviously clueless about — the heartland will see this as a ploy and hold it against Obama. Cool.

Comment by speaktruth | 2008-05-02 11:13:25

That would be fantastic. I love all three of these women and would love to see any of them as first AA president, after Hillary’s eight years. The way I figure it, women are over 50% of population, we’ve had 43 male presidents so far, so we have a lot of making up to do re female presidents over next few hundred years. Waters, Jackson-Lee, or Tubbs-Jones all could fit the bill.
And it would be great to see one in Pelosi’s job meanwhile.
There are so many really great capable AA leaders, instead of babyO.

So another slam comes out of Axelrod’s pocket. People say stupid things, like “typical white person.” This happened a long time ago, and there’s no pattern of racism in Hillary’s campaign and I challenge anyone to prove there was a pattern back during Bill’s campain(s). Patterns matter.

That being said, there is a pattern of racism coming from Obama’s campaign and we have proven it.

Does the Obama campaign want to be called out by Hillary directly for using race-baiting and fear-mongering? She could and might have to if they persist and keep crying wolf with the obvious race card.

Comment by Pagan Power | 2008-05-02 11:09:15

I didn’t particularly like that exchange in the least. It is impossible to tell with the whispering and the angle of his mouth whether or not those were the exact words that came out of his mouth. But should they prove to be true then Kantor needs to go in a BIG way. If I were Hillary I would put on a special pair of boots just to kick him right in the ass. Language like this is not acceptable to me.

What EXACTLY is Kantor’s official relationship with Hillary’s campaign?

Comment by Garlic-Nosed Guitarist | 2008-05-02 11:19:05

Whatever it is, to paint Hillary as a racist when Obama is the real racist — that’s what gets me. And if the Obama campaign pushes this, maybe its time for Hillary to come out swinging. Enough is enough!

Comment by simon, too | 2008-05-02 12:17:32

Given how Obama is hanging himself, what is your justification for her to come out “swinging?”

Interesting to me, the same complaint was made about Congress,(keeping it’s powder dry) turns out Congress is simply in the pocket of the same people who support Bush.

It’s different for Clinton, though, so why do you see her as passive?

Shes’ been highly effective, I’m always confused for the call of the “swinging dick” since it’s so ineffective for those who don’t understand greater, or even former, US strategy.

Like the trolls, say.

Really, no fooling.

From what I’ve been reading, after the initial “victory” the initial bamboozle, he doesn’t have the chops to recognize or counter change, and the holes in his thinking, and planning, are enormous.

It’s as if he’s running a dirty campaign for student body president, as opposed to one for the United States Presidency, a bunch of stupid teen agers.

Which could explain WHY they have so much trouble, everywhere.

LETS GO AND DESIGN T-SHIRTS
Your Ideas
by Chelsea Clinton5/2/2008 11:44:34 AMOne of the most fun things about meeting people who support my mom’s campaign is seeing all the creative ways they show their support. I’ve seen a lot of homemade signs, buttons, and shirts on the campaign trail, and I think we need to harness that great creative energy for our campaign.

So today, I’d like to announce the launch of Project T-Shirt, a contest to design the next great t-shirt for my mom’s campaign.

I know you agree with me that my mom is the strongest, most progressive, and most prepared candidate, and that she would be the best president! This is a great way for you to show exactly what her historic campaign means to you.

Maybe you’ve got a slogan that you’ve been dying to share. Or maybe you want to share your design talents. Whatever your ideas are, I can’t wait to see them — and we’ll offer the best shirt for sale in the official campaign store, raising money to help my mom win! I’ll also make sure to get a picture of me AND my mom wearing the shirt, which we will post on the website.

So please put on your thinking caps, get those creative juices flowing, and visit our Project T-Shirt website to learn more and submit your design.

Please click here to get started.

I’m so excited to see all the great ideas you have. Thank you so much for all you’re doing to help my mom win!

Go Hillary!

From all those Web designers, to the arts and crafts ladies who used to watch Rosie, each has their own unique, artistic, vision.

Great idea.

And the nice thing about Hillary’s campaign is ALL are welcome.

A person working for minimum wage in this country is now paying 33% of their hourly income for each gallon of gas.

If Pelosi and Obama and the rest of the Ivory Tower crowd were paying 33% of their hourly income PER GALLON, they’d be outraged, despite the fact that even at those prices, they’d have money left over.

I’ll bet none of them have ever scrounged in the kitchen and bedroom drawers for change, then used handfuls of dimes and quarters to put one measly gallon in their tank. The other convenience store patrons look at you like you are scum when you do that, BTW, or at best with pity, which sometimes feels even worse.

I’ll bet they’ve never lived trying to make it to work another day on that single gallon, praying that they don’t run out of gas, fearfully watching that needle already below the “E”, hoping they can run on fumes until they can get their paycheck deposited that afternoon.

Millions of Americans live in exactly that way. Day in, day out.

These people are clueless.

I think they are paying more like 60% of their hourly income. The Federal Minimum wage is $5.85 per hour and gasoline is an average of $3.60 per gallon nationwide. But I am not the greatest at math.

Maybe we should have means tested gas prices. That way Pelosi and Obama and that crew can pay their fair share. But on the other hand, Pelosi gets the taxpayers to pay for her vehicle and her fuel so she couldn’t care less.

Hi, I worked for bit at a small store. Didn’t bother me a bit if somebody came in and bought one gallon of gas. If, however, someone came in and blew their wad on booze and ciggies, refusing their kid/s a quarter for the gum ball machine - that would bother me a lot.

Breathtaking.

Working poor, can’t keep a country strong that way…

WTF is wrong with our Congress?

Too much San Fransico ghetto for that group of elite.

Don’t forget to factor in rising rates for public transportation…..
In cities outside of large cities with a variety of public transportation a large section of the woring poor rely on Buses to get to work, school,
clinics and the rising rates and diminishing services can be crippling.
There are large swaths of the country where transportation is reliant almost entirely on owning a vehicle. Otherwise the poor are forced to rely on the limited bus services which can sometimes take 2 1/2 hours to travel a distance of roughly 25 miles if going cross town with bus changes. In our town it took my daughter 2 1/2 hours each morning to travel by bus and train to her school that was 25 mi. away because of cross town changes. Most of the wealthy in this country have no clue how difficult it is to be working poor.

Obama Gets Caught in a Cut and Paste Job

States are not interchangeable.

Via Jerome, who gives a nod to a diary by bobbank. Read it. It says it all.

Huh? Folks, it’s nothing but a copy-and-paste hack job. We did learn something, though: Barack cannot stop thinking about Pennsylvania.

Here is the competent version, courtesy of Hillary:

Oregon’s National Guard has contributed significantly to our nation’s actions in Iraq and Afghanistan with 7,000 individual mobilizations. More than 3,500 Oregon Guard members are scheduled to go to Iraq in 2009. In addition, Oregon has 359,000 veterans within its borders, which is higher than the national average. Yet unlike many states with this level of military involvement, Oregon has no active duty bases, which routinely provide health care for military families. This means Oregon’s veterans, Guard members, reservists and their families have limited access to the health care they deserve, making reliable health care through TRICARE even more critical in Oregon than in most states.

I think there’s a reason Hillary is a bit more handy with details on this one. Did you know that in 2005, she got to work with Sen. Lindsey Graham, and the two of them expanded TRICARE? Through their joint efforts, the program was expanded to include all reservists, even those not currently on active duty. That’s real experience with reaching across the aisle to get something good done.

Now, I saved the best for last, and it’s a whopper. Speaking about the need to “Clean up our Water”, Barack made this solemn pledge to the people of Oregon:

[H]e will continue his leadership in protecting national treasures like the Great Lakes from threats such as industrial pollution, water diversion, and invasive species.

Oregon to Barack: the Great Lakes are not in Oregon!

“When your Oregon plan is an afterthought, it’s easy to make 1,700 mile mistakes,” said Julie Edwards, Oregon Communications Director. “I hope that if Senator Obama comes to Oregon to debate, he finally learns a little bit about our state.”

Ouch.

So there you have it. Sen. Obama is always urging us to have a serious discussion about the issues. And Hillary Clinton put her money where his mouth is. Here was an excellent opportunity for our two candidates to engage in substance. Instead, Barack’s campaign presented a hastily constructed copy-and-paste job, with little or no thought given to the specific issues on the minds of Oregon voters. Change they can believe in? Hardly. …..

Laughable.

You folks realize the chances of Hillary getting any tax increase on the oil companies is next to zero with Reid and Pelosi controlling Congress. As both of them are controlled by K Street. The same people who owned Lott and DeLay.

And K Street isn’t in the habit of helping ordinary Americans.

Even if K Street didn’t own Congress, both Pelosi and Reid are grossly incompetent and closet Republicans. They have given Bush everything he wants on Iraq, they refuse to hold hearings on the criminality of the Bush administration, refuse to fund the EPA, FDA and CPSC to the levels needed to protect the people.

In most respects its as if the GOP is still in control of Congress.

Comment by JoeySky | 2008-05-02 11:36:26

that’’s why Pelosi, Obama’s auntie, should go after uncle Wright and uncle Dean.

You know, we expect Democrats to speak and act like Democrats and to take a position that is supportive of the average American worker. Funny or not, it is John McCain who gets it rather than Barky Obama and the “liberals” in the Congress.

Comment by simon, too | 2008-05-02 13:00:01

If Clinton were to be elected, (the same with McCain) the dynamic will change, period.

You know those people who aren’t comfortable with change, who are always in 1965, in their heads, say?

Fatal.

Comment by JoeySky | 2008-05-02 12:00:12

My think. Obama is taking an opposite stand against Clinton just for the sake of toughen up his image. He needs to get rid of his pansy image, again, at the expense of middle class.

Also he is trying to appeal to his last group of supporters, the well-to-do voters that can afford the dent in their pocket because of the high oil price.

For the regular voters, HRC proposal will make a huge different in their bottom line.

What pisses me off is when he says all you will save is 20-30 dollars, and the morons in the audience laugh. I don’t know what math they are doing when you can save .18 cents per gallon, but be that as it may, college students who work in the summer to save money for school, low-income families etc at this point they need help, relief wherever they can get it.

PS: Pagan Power, thank you for blogging this and especially “I was for it/against it” facts. Had no idea loose change had voted for this before.

Comment by simon, too | 2008-05-02 13:43:09

My parents thought in cents, I did not, until recently.

20-30 dollars is two generic perscriptions for my family, or one name brand.

It’s about three pounds of starbucks coffee, (I grind my own in the morning) or it’s 25 pounds of organic flour, for one month.

It’s about 4 dozen flowers at our local Alberson’s, or at thirty dollars, 3/4 of a co pay for a doctor’s visit.

It is, for me, at about 32 MPG, about 3/4 of an extra tank of gas for the month.

Obama has his head up his ass, doesn’t he?

Actually they are, about 20 pennies, in fact. You are painfully dumb. I hope you don’t ever breed.

I’m sorry, Obama is a distraction. (I really AM sorry, that this is true, and that I have to live in it and talk about it, and try to get people to see it.) But there is a much larger picture, aside from the fact that nobody in their right mind would vote for a distraction.

By corrupting a government and turning it against its people, fascism allows private financier and corporate interests to control a nation.

The USA is being turned into a police state. War and famine are spreading across our planet. Nations are being destabilized, populations are being destroyed. It is deliberate, it is genocidal.

Optimism seems out of place in today’s world, where fear is used to manipulate the public into surrendering its freedom, where new technologies are mainly used for social control and warfare, where science is generally portrayed as a danger to humanity, or a source of new diversions.

This is a war of ideas, a war over the ideas which will determine the nature of the political system (fascism or democracy) which will dominate the planet in our children’s lifetimes.

A Malthusian world of resource shortages, austerity, and apocalyptic population reduction, ruled by fascist financiers and corporate cartels (and big-city crooks), OR what the United States–that is, the American System of political economy offers: scientific and technological breakthroughs which will raise the standards of living both in the U.S. and abroad.

Some of us are old enough to remember living in a society that sent human beings to the Moon–in spite of a “cold War” which had us as students drilling how to protect ourselves under our school desks, and visualizing such horrific nuclear attacks as we drilled.

With the oil hoaxes of the 1970s, the spot market was created, which, in turn, created a huge pool of dollars centered around the London-based international oil cartel. Through this mechanism, the U.S. government essentially lost control of the dollar, which became a weapon for a speculative (”free-market”) assault on the U.S.A. The market price for oil is not set by OPEC, but by the financial markets.

The Obama bullshit is only a very small part of this.

The ongoing stealth financial collapse, combined with the horrific and stupid neocon American Empire fantasy, and the fascist policies tolerated by the Pelosi Democrats, have neutralized the ability of the United States to have a positive impact on the world, or even manage its own affairs, leaving the field wide open for the Brutish Empire and its stooges.

The Brutish rule by the tyranny of stupidity, subjugating people by making them too stupid to understand how they are being manipulated. It works! But only if we let it.

There is a clear way out of this if we but turn our minds, and put our muscle to it.

The USA is being turned into a police state

Not a police state, a failed attempt at fascism.

Those guys can’t tell their asses from a hole in the ground, Cheney has failed, LOOK at the quality of troll we have around here.

And fascist nations DO NOT survive, period.

So what’s the point?

Healthy democracies survive, but how do you get rid of the Roves and the Dick Morrises, and the lil PR firms that would be classified enemies of state, if their work came out of China? And how do you teach the American people to recognize the manufactured, artless PR scandals of a Karl Rove? And within all of this, how do you game the real enemies of the US, within a greater asymmetric “world war?”

Mindless patriotism, no, but a real appreciation for our country, and the great things it has achieved, and will achieve yes.

And also an acknowledgement of what it has done wrong, it’s sins against others, and correcting those mistakes.

Like Iraq, say.

I mean, what do we WANT as nation, what do hope to be?

Good questions, good answers. Thanks for your reply. I’m slow to see it because I’m on the other side of the planet (and keeping kinda strange hours lately. I slept between my comment and now.)

Fascism in Europe lasted quite a while and caused a lot (how dare I wrap up the holocaust, the Russian deaths, the fireboming of German cities and so much more in those two words, “a lot”!) of suffering and shredding of civilization, cultures and good.

There’s much more to be said if one looks back further in history and calls “fascism” by different names. “Oppression” or “feudalism” for very rough starters. Europeans had the Hundred years war. The “Dark Ages” lasted a good long while. Roman Imperialism (Thank you, Jesus and Philo of Alexandrea and John and Paul!),… our roots. (And I’m leaving out Africa, where some of the best of our roots also come from… sign of our times!)

No insult intended, but Americans are presently tending to live in a sort of fishbowl of unclear water. Many of our founders had a better, wider scope.

I must run to duties and errands. Talk with you later God willing. I’m leaving excellent questio
