Race-Card Nonsense: Why Dr. Maya Angelou Supports Hillary
By Deb Cupples on May 6, 2008 at 5:04 PM in Education, Health Care, Hillary Clinton, Iraq, Maya Angelou, Race, Race Card, Women and Children
Most Americans who watch Oprah know of Dr. Maya Angelou as Oprah’s mentor, but Dr. Angelou earned acclaim years ago through her civil-rights leadership, poems and books. Dr. Angelou is a national treasure, as Bill Clinton acknowledged when he invited her to recite a poem during his 1993 inauguration.
While some Obama supporters — e.g., Rep. James Clyburn — are busy trying once again to "play the race card" in some strange hope of benefiting Obama, Dr. Maya Angelou (who turned 80 last month) has been busy positively campaigning for Hillary Clinton.
Why? Instead of paraphrasing a brilliant word smith, I’ll give it to you in Dr. Angelou’s own words:
Dear Friend:
I am writing to tell you about my friend, Hillary Clinton, and why I am standing with her in her campaign for the presidency. I know the kind of president Hillary Clinton will be because I know the person she is.
I am inspired by her courage and her honesty. She is a reliable and trustworthy person. She is someone I not only admire but one for whom I have profound affection.
Hillary does not waver in standing up for those who need a champion. She has always been a passionate protector of families. As a child, she was taught that all God’s children are equal, and as a mother, she understood that her child wasn’t safe unless all children were safe. As
I wrote about Hillary recently in a praise song: "She is the prayer of every woman, and every man who longs for fair play, healthy families, good schools and a balanced economy."It may be easy to view Hillary Clinton through the narrow lens of those who would write her off or grind her down. Hillary sees us as we are, black and brown and white and yellow and pink and relishes our differences knowing that fundamentally we are all more alike than we are unalike. She is able to look through complexion and see community.
She has endured great scrutiny, and still she dares greatly. Hillary Clinton will not give up on you, and all she asks is that you do not give up on her. She is a long-distance runner. I am honored to say I am with her for the long run.
I am supporting Hillary Clinton because I know that she will make the most positive difference in people’s lives and she will help our country become what it can be. Whether you are her supporter, leaning towards her, undecided, or supporting someone else, I believe Hillary Clinton will represent you –- she will be a president for all Americans. It is no small thing that along the way we will make history together.Vote for Hillary Clinton and show your support at www.hillaryclinton.com. I know she will make us proud. (ET Online).
That’s strong testimony from a renowned civil-rights leader and intellectual. How could any politico even try to attack Hillary on race relations — let alone twice?
That and history is on Hillary’s side. Long before she entered political life, Hillary actually fought for civil rights. In the ’60s, she even took it to the personal, local level — bringing African American friends to a then-segregated church.
As Dr. Angelou said about Hillary in an earlier piece :
"You may write me down in history
"With your bitter, twisted lies,
"You may trod me in the very dirt
"But still, like dust, I’ll rise….
"Rise Hillary.
"Rise."
And we can help Hillary rise, by voting for her (those who are in states with upcoming primaries), by donating to her campaign, and by simply telling others who are about to vote in primaries what we know about Hillary.

What would a woman like Dr. Maya Anjelou know about anything anyway. You need an EXPERT like Jessie Jackson Jr. to question the validity of Senator Clintons feelings! This just points out so much better then I can ever explain the REAL horror of the self agrandizing, egomaniacal, racebaiting as a tool campaign of this empty vessel. The damage obamalamadingdong has done to race relations and the hiatoric partnesrship between Democrats and the AA community and ESPECIALLY the VOTING AA community will take DECADES to heal. If ever. All so this pathetic little man, this huckster, this hoodwinker, this bamboozler can try to pull his biggest con.
Yeah! Jesse Jr.’s the man! Like his bu Barack, he knows what it’s like to be a pampered preppie, ’cause he’s been there.
Amen. The race card stuff peddled by the Obama camp is a bunch of absolute HORSESH*T. People are sick to death of it.
New front page post over at VillarrealSports.com detailing how James Taranto of the Wall Street Journal helped us get thousands of more eyeballs on the video expose I made regarding Barack Obama’s ties to, and support among, terrorists.
Also, some love to No Quarter, Larry C Johnson & Susan in that post. Larry and Susan, you know how much we all owe to you two both for the ability to have your site to gather on and for your extraordinary investigative work.
Come check it out and if you have the chance, drop Taranto a “Thank You” for writing what he did. Our site got over 1,000 additional hits — and video views — in a few short hours based solely on the link he put
in his column. Taranto can be reached at:

Thanks for the tip. I’ll check it out.
GOOD POST…..I am a Huge Fan of Angelous….She is a BRILLIANT POET in the Best tradition of the Great Philosophers…..Hers is an awsome talent and I feel kinda stupid for even trying to describe her….So I’ll quit.
Maya Angelou is wonderful! She is a visionary and very eloquent.
Thanks for posting this article and your continued support and activism for Hillary!
This is OT, so please excuse, but its important.
I could be wrong, but I am smelling rat in today’s “bomb threat” to Obama’s Indiana campaign headquarters.
The timing makes me suspect a sympathy vote ploy.
Well, Rove did bug his own office.
The more desperate they act, the weaker we know they are. Things are shaping up to be excellent for Hillary!
This alleged bomb threat won’t amount to a hill of beans since Obama has been crying wolf way too long now playing the fear and race cards. In fact, it will be a net-loss for him. He’s a fucking idiot. A child in a sandbox.
By the way, the dirty tricks and illegal activities if any, do get added to the already gargantuan list of reasons why Obama will never be handed the nomination.
I guess Obama thinks we won’t notice and won’t hold it against him.
I heard it on the TV news but then couldn’t find the story anywhere. I sincerely hope that no one actually threatened Obama’s campaign office. After all, Hillary supporters don’t set bombs. That dishonor is reserved for Obama mentors and supporters.
I agree that 99.9999999% of Hillary supporters would never threaten violence. I’ve yet to see that type of behavior in our camp.
That alleged bomb threat is most likely what we assume: If something smells like bullshit, it usually is.
I’m not concerned, that threat is probably designed more to get us spinning our wheels as a diversion. The people on the ground are still gonna vote and Hillary is still going to win.
More likely an Obama cultist called in the bomb threat with the idea that the Clinton campaign would be blamed for it.
It’s meat to be a distraction just like the gax tax was. Distractions lose votes.
I love Maya and Hillary is way out ahead in the first votes out of Indiana 61% to 39%
go Hillary go
I have always liked Maya Angelou. I’m even more impressed that she is sticking by Hillary Clinton. It must be hard for her. Thank you Maya!
Perhaps hard and easy for her at the same time.
But I totally agree and get your point.
I have loved Maya’s poems and books since Jr. High…
Yes, Maya Angelou is “one of the good ones”;)
