The Ted Kennedy Situation [UPDATED with Hillary Clinton’s statement]

UPDATE, simple and dignified:

Statement from Hillary Clinton

“My thoughts and prayers are with Sen. Ted Kennedy and his family today. We all wish him well and a quick recovery.”

[AN ADDITIONAL UPDATE BY ME IS BELOW.]
________________________________

[It goes without saying that we are all saddened by this medical crisis, and are very upset for his family, particularly all of the children of his slain brothers who he helped to raise.]

Why are all the networks talking about him in the past tense? Methinks they know something they haven’t told us yet.

This next item absolutely floored me. In Obama’s statement, he said:

He was is one of my favorite people.

Uh. Okay. Isn’t that what you’d say about an old fraternity brother who died? And old neighborhood pal? But a United States senator? [I corrected the “was” to “is” — it was hard to hear the first time because of a lot of noise in the background, but I listened again, and made the change.]

And CNN has been talking about the EFFECT that Kennedy’s condition (or death) would have on Obama’s campaign, which strikes me as utterly distasteful. One CNN reporter said:

Barack Obama is expected to come up here to Portland tomorrow but, depending on how things go with Senator Kennedy’s health — if things take a turn for the worse — it could UP-END THIS CAMPAIGN.

Heavens to mercy, let’s pray that that doesn’t happen!

UPDATE BY SUSAN: The CNN reporter says that Obama is enroute, following his Roseburg, Oregon rally to Portland for a rally. WE’LL SEE WHAT HE’s MADE OF then. Will he just go along with the campaign schedule? Or will he do what Hillary would do, and suspend the campaign, and travel to be with Kennedy’s family? (I KNOW IN MY BONES that that is what Hillary Clinton would do.)

Fox News just read a very classy statement from John McCain.

Obama makes EVERYTHING about him.

He’s disgraceful!

Comment by Mary | 2008-05-17 12:12:26

And notice, John McCain did nothing of the sort, like Obambi did.

John McCain’s statement was gracious and PRESIDENTIAL.

Nuff said.

Comment by Jason | 2008-05-17 13:15:44

Here is the actual quote:

Obama said that his “thoughts and prayers” are with Kennedy.

“We are going to try to find out as quickly as possible what is going on,” Obama said, and added that he would call Kennedy’s wife, Vicky.

“He is one of my favorite people,” Obama said.

Thats a nice thing to say about someone at this time. I don’t see how thats any more or less dignified than what Hillary said.

How does Obama make this about him? Because he used the word “my”? Hillary said “my” also.

Hypocrites.

Further, he actually said “is one of” not “was one of” like SusanI’maliar said above.

Get your facts straight, liar.

Pathetic.

Comment by Andy | 2008-05-17 13:54:12

Jason: You should learn from Larery and Susan who have the honesty and integrity of correct their
bads and not hide them. Check the post above again.

From Susan:

[I corrected the “was” to “is” — it was hard to hear the first time because of a lot of noise in the background, but I listened again, and made the change.]

Comment by Jason | 2008-05-17 14:05:24

What do I need to learn, exactly Andy, that once they are called out for lying they will make a correction?

How about fact checking in the first place so such a biased and basic mistake wasn’t made in the first place?

Obama LIES.

1.) Selma Got Me Born - LIAR, your parents felt safe enough to have you in 1961 - Selma had no effect on your birth, as Selma was in 1965.
2.) Father Was A Goat Herder - LIAR, he was a privileged, well educated youth, who went on to work with the Kenyan Government.
3.) Father Was A Proud Freedom Fighter - LIAR, he was part of one of the most corrupt and violent governments Kenya has ever had
4.) My Family Has Strong Ties To African Freedom - LIAR, your cousin Raila Odinga has created mass violence in attempting to overturn a legitimate election in 2007, in Kenya. It is the first widespread violence in decades.
5.) My Grandmother Has Always Been A Christian - LIAR, she does her daily Salat prayers at 5am according to her own interviews. Not to mention, Christianity wouldn’t allow her to have been one of 14 wives to 1 man.
6.) My Name is African Swahili - LIAR, your name is Arabic and ‘Baraka’ (from which Barack came) means ‘blessed’ in that language. Hussein is also Arabic and so is Obama.

wife made you change, so you could run for office.

10.) Because I Lived In Indonesia, I Have More Foreign Experience - LIAR, you were there from the ages of 6 to 10, and couldn’t even speak the language. What did you learn, how to study the Koran and watch cartoons.
11.) I Am Stronger On Foreign Affairs - LIAR, except for Africa (surprise) and the Middle East (bigger surprise), you have never been anywhere else on the planet and thus have NO experience with our closest allies.
12.) I Blame My Early Drug Use On Ethnic Confusion - LIAR, you were quite content in high school to be Barry Obama, no mention of Kenya and no mention of struggle to identify - your classmates said you were just fine.
13.)An Ebony Article Moved Me To Run For Office - LIAR, Ebony has yet to find the article you mention in your book. It doesn’t, and never did, exist.
14.) A Life Magazine Article Changed My Outlook On Life - LIAR, Life has yet to find the article you mention in your book. It doesn’t, and never did, exist.
15.) I Won’t Run On A National Ticket In ‘08 - LIAR, here you are, despite saying, live on TV, that you would not have enough experience by then, and you are all about having experience first.
16.) Present Votes Are Common In Illinois - LIAR, they are common for YOU, but not many others have 130 NO VOTES.
17.) Oops, I Misvoted - LIAR, only when caught by church groups and democrats, did you beg to change your misvote.

23.) I Have Released My State Records - LIAR, as of March, 2008, state bills you sponsored or voted for have yet to be released, exposing all the special interests pork hidden within.
24.) I Took On The Asbestos Altgeld Gardens Mess - LIAR, you were part of a large group of people who remedied Altgeld Gardens. You failed to mention anyone else but yourself, in your books.
25.) My Economics Bill Will Help America - LIAR, your 111 economic policies were just combined into a proposal which lost 99-0, and even YOU voted against your own bill.
26.) I Have Been A Bold Leader In Illinois - LIAR, even your own supporters claim to have not seen BOLD action on your part.
27.) I Passed 26 Of My Own Bills In One Year - LIAR, they were not YOUR bills, but rather handed to you, after their creation by a fellow Senator, to assist you in a future bid for higher office.
28.) No One Contacted Canada About NAFTA - LIAR, the Candian
Government issued the names and a memo of the conversation your
campaign had with them.
29.) I Am Tough On Terrorism - LIAR, you missed the Iran Resolution vote on terrorism and your good friend Ali Abunimah supports the destruction of Israel.
29.) I Am Tough On Terrorism - LIAR, you missed the Iran Resolution vote on terrorism and your good friend Ali Abunimah supports the destruction of

37.) My Campaign Was Extorted By A Friend - LIAR, that friend is

counting.
41.) My Campaign Had Nothing To Do With The 1984 Ad - LIAR, your own campaign worker made the ad on his Apple in one afternoon.
42.) My Campaign Never Took Over MySpace - LIAR, Tom, who started
MySpace issued a warning about this advertising to MySpace clients.
43.) I Inspire People With My Words - LIAR, you inspire people with other people’s words.
44.) I Have Passed Bills In The U.S. Senate - LIAR, you have passed A BILL in the U.S. Senate - for Africa, which shows YOUR priorities.
45.) I Have Always Been Against Iraq - LIAR, you weren’t in office to vote against it AND you have voted to fund it every single time, unlike Kucinich,
who seems to be out gutting you Obama. You also seem to be stepping back from your departure date - AGAIN.
46.) I Have Always Supported Universal Health Care - LIAR, your plan leaves us all to pay the 15,000,000 who don’t have to buy it.
47.) I Only Found Out About My Investment Conflicts Via Mail - LIAR, both companies you site as having sent you letters about this conflict have no record of any such letter ever being created or sent.
48.) I Am As Patriotic As Anyone - LIAR, you won’t wear a flag pin and you don’t put your hand over your heart during the Anthem.
49.) My Wife Didn’t Mean What She Said About Pride In Country - LIAR, your wife’s words follow lock-step in the vain of Wright and Farrahkan, in relation to their contempt and hatred of America.
50.) Wal-Mart Is A Company I Wouldn’t Support - LIAR, your wife has
received nearly a quater of a million dollars through Treehouse, which is connected to Wal-Mart.
51.) Treehouse Is A Small Company - LIAR, the CEO of Treehouse last year, made more than the CEO of Wal-Mart, according to public records.
52.) University Of Chicago Hospital Pay Is Fair - LIAR, your wife’s pay raise was nearly 150% (above) her already bloated rate and the hospital is a Non-Profit Hospital, which made $100,000,000 in the last 3 years. They overcharge blacks VS whites for services, and overcharge everyone in general by 538%!
53.)I Barely Know Rezko - Only 5 Billed Hours - LIAR, you have known him for 17 years, and decided to do a real estate deal with him during a time when he was proven to be under investigation. Despite this, you divided your property and had them take off $300K before the mortgage problems started. Then Rezko’s wife buys the lot beside it that you can’t afford, saving you $625,000.
54.) My Donations Have Been Checked Thoroughly - LIAR, you only gave back Hsu ($72K) and Rezko ($150K) their money when publically called on their involvement in your campaigns.
55.) My Church Is Like Any Other Christian Church - LIAR, your church is so extreme, the pastor who married you, Rev. Wright, just got done blaming the US for 9/11 and named Louis Farrahkan their person of the year.
56.) I Disagree With My Church All The Time - LIAR, you still have yet to repudiate Wright, who married you and your wife, and you still donate large sums of money to assist the church in furthering its message - hatred and revenge. You donated in 2006 alone, $22,500 to the church that you so terribly disagree with. That is nearly $500 PER WEEK - that sure is disagreement, Senator Obama.
57.) I Have Clean Connections Despite Rezko - LIAR, you are not only
connected to Exelon and Rezko, you are also connected to Hillary PAC supporter Mr. Hsu, AND an Iraqi Billionaire of ill repute, Nadhmi Auchi, who ripped off people in the Food For Oil, Iraqi deal. Seems Mr. Auchi may have
helped Obama buy his million dollar property long before Obama had
millions of dollars. Wonder what favors Mr. Auchi expects, when Obama leaves Iraq free to be taken over by special interests such as him.
58.) I never heard sermons like Rev. Wright’s, that have been in videos all day, You Tube - LIAR! 3 days later during your Mea Culpa BS speech you said “Did I hear controversial statements while I sat in that church? Yes I did.”

CNN has added that Obama sends prayers, etc.

“He is one of my favorite people.” is the quote CNN added (and no quotes from anyone else).

Teddy is resting comfortably. He is lucky to have good health insurance, something that has been Hilary’s main purpose in life.

Comment by President Hillary Clinton will beat Obama and his troll army | 2008-05-17 13:06:44

We need to put up a shield to protect Senator Kennedy from that kind of prayer. What a fake hollow jerk Obama is.

CNN is exploiting it to the hilt. All shots include Obama. Blll Schneider was talking about his Obama endorsement was a milestone in this nation’s history.
If he passes, we are going to hear nothing but his speeches of endorsement.

Comment by PssttCmere | 2008-05-17 15:00:49

“a milestone in this nation’s history” WTF
Endorsing the candidate that IS electable and is the most qualified would be a milestone. MA didn’t even go for obama…not much of an endorsement, now was it.

Meanwhile, I hope Kennedy recovers.

He is a champion for liberal causes, largely for health care for children. He also is full of life at age 76, remains one of the most productive members of the Senate, and has plenty still to offer our country as a U.S. Senator.

Comment by Hillary or Bust | 2008-05-17 13:15:09

People DIE when they get old. It’s a fact of life. Our country has gotten wayyy too squeamish and fearful over that fact. There is nothing wrong about dying after a full life at 76. If you believe in an after life, then he’ll be with God. If you don’t, then he’ll be in no pain. Death is nothing to be upset about. If he goes now that’s his time to go and he’s left his legacy. There’s nothing harsh or wrong about saying that. Death is part of life…we’re all going to go sometime.

Comment by hells kitchen | 2008-05-17 13:54:53

Comment by Nellie | 2008-05-17 13:34:56

I am going to interrupt here. The specualtion and negativity below are way out of control.

Up until John Jr., JFK’s son died, the Kennedy’s and Clintons were very close.

I have no particulars - just a lifetime of knowing the Kennedy’s. After the “crash” of John Jr’s plane, Teddy went rigid. You could see it in his stance, voice and persona. It seems, the family felt it was some kinda of “planned” accident that killed John Jr.

Ted rallied Cape Cod boats to search for the downed plane, John Jr.s, his wife’s and sister-in-laws bodies. A couple of days later, Bill Clinton sent a couple of Navy vessels, and Ted and the family males were out on the water everyday regardless of weather.

There is lots of speculation about it - but no one has any FACTS. The only known FACT is that was when the friendship between the Clintons and Kennedy’s came to an abrupt halt. For anyone who cares, other than Joe Jr., Ted’s oldest brother, all the other Kennedy male deaths tie directly back to the Bush family.

Things are sad enough - let the Bots put forth their vile conspiracy theories. For us here at NQ, lets not add incindary matter to an already painful situation.

Thanks.

Comment by Hillary or Bust | 2008-05-17 13:48:07

You’re reading wayyy too much into my comment. I honestly don’t get why people get so freaked out over an old person dying from natural causes. Kennedy’s history with the Clintons has *nothing* to do with my comment.

If it’s his time to go, it’s his time to go. Be at peace with death. It’s not a tragedy when you are old, it’s what we all will go through eventually.

I have seem mentioned on several blogs that a UN rep is coming in to evaluate charges of racism regarding the election. Does anyone have a source for this and did the Obama campaign call them in?

Comment by Hillary or Bust | 2008-05-17 12:21:20

Where’s the UN rep to respond to all the sexism? Are they going to cart away Chris Matthews?

Comment by norrismorris | 2008-05-17 13:13:05

If NOW or Emily’s List were really together, they’d have the guts to start a serious lawsuit against MSNBC for “pimp” remarks, etc and a concerted campaign they have waged against Hillary Clinton.

Why MSNBC has been allowed along with NBC to pursue a one sided relentless sexist attack on HRC’s character, gender, etc, when there has been little balance of opinion remains a mystery.

The airways belong to the people with the express intention that the law prohibits any TV station to act as a representative of one candidate, or any issue for that matter.

The insulting sexist behavior of Matthews,Olbdermann,Shuster,Mitchell,Madow, are only part of their acttive discrimination. They have engendered misinformation and promoted talking heads and political Obama surrogates without balance.

Even Fox News who I hardly revere has shown both sides more fairly on all of these issues, so that at least there is a more balanced

I have talked to a lot of people, who say they do not care who wins the nomination and that Obama’s inexperience does not matter as they feel he will be a puppet for the legislature, Kennedy, specifically. I was just thinking about that this morning before the news hit. Who will guide Obama if he is elected. He’s proven that he is not capable to doing it on his own; no more than Bush was. I hope people can remember that Bush actually had more experience than Obama before he took office, and look at the mess he made. I hope it makes people think twice about Obama’s inexperience.

He is not a nice man. As much as I wish any human being well at a time like this, I will never forget what he did in 1969 to Mary Jo Kopeckne. That was reprehensible. So much for “noblier aspirations”, the only aspiration he had was to save his own butt and leave an injured women to drown. It took him more that 12 hours to report his “accident”, after he talked with his lawyer

McCain has known Kennedy a lot longer than Obama has. Probably knows him better.

And speculating about the political consequences of a politician’s death or illness is par for the course. When Paul Wellstone (D-MN) died, there was a lot of discussion about who would replace him and what his chances would be against the GOP. When Tim Johnson (D-SD) underwent brain surgery, there was a lot of talk about how his absence or possible death or disability would affect the balance of the Senate.

Distasteful, perhaps, but these sorts of things are on people’s minds and have to be discussed.

our not ready for prime time candidate? Good thing Hillary is making up ground and has stolen his momentum, otherwise we’d have more months of this gaffer.

Comment by Uppity | 2008-05-17 12:26:39

I am sorry but I can’t help but think how nice it must be to have stellar health care coverage at a nice cheap price, even if you are a multi-millionaire. I am thinking that my single pay HMO, which costs just shy of $900 per month for one person ($2000k for a family) wouldn’t be air lifting me to one of the most renowned hospitals in the country. In fact, I would imagine I wouldn’t “make it”. Then too, I am lucky I can pay the premiums. How many people have no health care insurance and how many people this year will go bankrupt due to a stroke, even WITH health insurance. This all brings me to wonder why a lucky Liberal man like Ted Kennedy would endorse a person whose “free market” health care plan just plain won’t work, considering the States are in the pockets of health care insurers.

That having been said, I hope the guy makes a recovery. I also hope every common person in America who has the same problem today has a recovery.

yes we would not have been airlifted…

which actually may be good in some cases, I see a poster on TL has discussed this point, the old fashioned roto rooter for clots can work better at older hospitals than the new techniques, and if they administered the DC agent as it seems they did it sometimes causes secondary tertiary strokes due to excessive bleeding and it sounds like that may be the case here..

every one in this country should be able to be taken to the best facility for care regardless of income

that is among the reasons Hillary is so important to all of us, UHC is a must have

Because he probably doesn’t give a shit who lives or dies outside of his decrepit clan like most two-faced politicians.

The good news though since he is a politician he’s quite replaceable should he not be able to do whatever senators do.

Things will go on without him thanks to Democracy.

Comment by matterhorn | 2008-05-17 12:54:38

I don’t know, even if Kennedy doesn’t give a shit, I don’t celebrate his pain.

I would though, celebrate the death of wannabe torturer, acting on behalf of the US military, though, or maybe I mean someone like Hitler, or Mengele, I’d not feel guilty about his death, I’d consider it a win for humanity, and intelligent people, everywhere.

How do you know Kennedy’s health insurance is covering the airlifting and maybe its just the fact that he is really wealthy?

You are absolutely shameless in how you try to spin this into some negative about Obama. You are like a wannabe Karl Rove.

You’re pathetic.

Comment by Uppity | 2008-05-17 13:36:07

Barack Obama’s No Health Insurance Plan stands on its own. If you would actually take time to research and learn something other than scratch and sniff Obama swooning points, you would know that.

Comment by Jason | 2008-05-17 13:54:13

That isn’t what you posted about, you posted some crap about Teddy’s health insurance, which you know nothing about.

I do know about Obama and Hillary’s health insurance plan.

If you were remotely reasonable and didn’t try to turn everything that happens in the world into an anti-Obama screed you might seem like less of a republican asshole.

Uppity,

In Cape Cod, the Kennedy’s are considered a national treasure, so I am sure that money is not even being discussed right now.

What is scary is this statement:

Kennedy, 76, was rushed from the Kennedy compound at Hyannisport, Massachusetts, to Cape Cod Hospital at 9 a.m., before being airlifted to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, hospital officials said.

Cape Cod Hospital (CCH) is a little community hospital, less than 3 miles from the entrance to the Kennedy Compound. The call to 911 was at 8:19 a.m. he arrived at CCH at 8:50 a.m. This means the paramedics, and most likely a local physican, could not do anything for him, and immediate arrangements were made to get him to Mass General. CCH has a helipad, but does not have a helicopter. The closest helcopter would have been at the Hyannis airfield, or the Air Force Base at Falmouth.

This does not look good. As angry as I am at Ted and Caroline, the Kennedy’s have been part of my life since I was a child. My father’s “hobby” was politics, and we were a Kennedy Family.

With Ted’s excesses of alcohol and drugs in his life, it is a miracle that he has survived this long. Still there are tears, as I am not feeling there is too much hope right now, and part of my personal life history is passing away.

Uppity,
I have no health insurance. Lost is aout five years ago after I quit work with the attorneys. Since then I’ve been self-employed and cannot afford the premiums any longer. I’ll just have to die I guess. So Ted Kennedy is very fortunate in his life. He was raised in a wealthy, dynastic family.

Comment by AnninCA | 2008-05-17 12:28:28

Ted was a “real” person, complete with his own vices, obviously a true statesman, and equally obviously, a petty politician.

His record will speak for itself. He is an American icon.

As such, he actually represents us all.

I relate to Ted in a real sense. I, too, have vices that have vexed me in life. I, too, have my clearly decided to toss my hat in the ring and not be one who stands on the sidelines and merely takes pictures. I, too, have my own deep petty ego motivations at times. I like to think that awareness helps soften those. But I could be wrong if I had power.

My ridiculous empathic story is so minor. Once, I got a promotion that gave me a secured parking space. Every single day, I pulled in and got an ego boost.

I admit that. I got an ego boost from a stupid piece of concrete in a parking lot.

I have always tried to keep my own ego moment in mind when criticising the political insiders.

I honestly think that they are so surrounded by “parking spaces” and other signals that they are “special” that they lose their way.

I recall my own moment when I realized that I was caught up in the symbols of success. It scared me.

Anyway, Ted’s record will stand proudly in a lot of areas. It will be criticized, especially this last moment….where he tried to mount a coup against his “arch-supporter,” the Clintons.

But he will, obviously, not get his own ego-boost he so strived to attain.

Biill Clinton out-smarted Ted years ago.

It appears that record will stand.

I know that No Child Left Behind will be a huge legacy too.

He has to be a medical marvel. His organs must have been pickled for years now.

Do you remember the SNL skit re: Clarence Thomas and Anita Hill? Teddy, Biden et al were on the Ethics Committee.

What a jerk. Do you think they’ll bury him at sea? There’s a certain bay…

If only the Obama campaign would go down with the ship!

Comment by CB | 2008-05-17 12:45:29

Samantha,

Your comment does not show the kind of character that sets Clintonistas on the net above and beyond the high-schoolish bathroom chatter of too many of the rabid Obamabots.

Teddy has been always been an advocate for working people and is one of the leaders of the Senate, as is Hillary Clinton. I believe that his background was one in which women weren’t perceived as equals. He has been a wonderful father substitute for the children of his slain brothers.

It would have been hard for Teddy to mentor Hillary because she is a woman, but when a middle-aged man on the make by the name of Barack came to the senate as a “rock star” (striking victory due to no opposition), he made a beeline to Kennedy. It made sense to curry the favor of the lion of the Senate. He let Kennedy and Daschle in on his big secret (me in 2008)!

In graduate departments in our universities, it has been hard for women students to receive the mentoring they need from mostly male faculty members. Women are often viewed as sexual objects, or the male doesn’t identify with the woman scholar, and can’t image her taking his place.

This is a lot of what we see in the Hillary disdain. Some men are not advanced enough to look beyond gender. Other countries are much more evolved in this regard.

For some reason, this reminds me of Rabin’s assassination, I guess in that it happened on a Saturday, too, and the news reacted the same.

I’d appreciate it if you didn’t take a “holier-than thou” stance with a fellow Clinton supporter. Make your point, in your own fashion. Leave others to do the same.

Kennedy is indeed a testament to what money and access can do for a man who for all intents embalmed himself years ago.

He’d be dead if he had the sort of health most working class Americans have.

Too bad he endorsed a miscreant that wants to gut Social Security and keep the medical system the way it is.

It really says a lot about Kennedy and none of is good. The man reeks of hypocrisy.

Can’t feel sorry for him one bit.

It is wall-to-wall nonstop coverage.

This next item absolutely floored me. In Obama’s statement, he said:

He was one of my favorite people.

This conman is not very deep, nor a good writer. That’s probably why he never wrote anything for the Harvard Review.

Comment by Winsome | 2008-05-17 13:07:42

Don’t you have enough dirt on Obama that you don’t have to make stuff up? None of the MSM news sites has him saying “was”. Read his entire statement. Hillary needs intelligent informed supporters. Please.

Comment by Hillary is Inevitable | 2008-05-17 13:43:43

You’re right about the dirt. As I said further on, there’s enough to fill the Grand Canyon. That doesn’t negate this:

This conman is not very deep, nor a good writer. That’s probably why he never wrote anything for the Harvard Review.

I hate that Kennedy is connected to him in any way. I pray for Kennedy and his family, and for our country.
