The Neo-Liberal War on Blue-Collar Whites and the Breakup of the Democratic Party

A friend paraphrases a famous story to illustrate why she may vote Republican for the first time in 40 years: in the late 1960s, when the feminist movement was still thought of as a novelty, a boorish male reporter asked the heterosexual Gloria Steinem if she was a lesbian. Steinem responded, “I am if you’re the alternative.”
There is a growing consensus at No Quarter and elsewhere that Obama’s tactics have made him an unacceptable alternative to Hillary, and many of us will be voting for McCain, writing in Hillary, or staying home.
As Hillary continues to increase her popular vote lead and absolutely crush Obama in critical states, many are looking at a potential Obama nomination as a coup d’état similar to Florida in 2000, facilitated by the neo-liberal-Dean wing of the Party, African American power brokers, and the Clinton-hating media. Regarding Florida and Michigan, Anglachel writes:
Lack of legitimacy means relying on force to win. If you have to bully people to make them be quiet, you have lost legitimacy. If you have to remove votes from the contest in order to win, you have lost legitimacy. The objection Hillary supporters have to “teh Rulz” to exclude Michigan and Florida is how nakedly they are used to force the numbers themselves into submission.
A commentator agrees with Anglachel and points out that:
The FL/MI debacle not only robbed Clinton of delegates, but it robbed her of momentum that would have affected later contests. It robbed her of frontrunner status. In fact, with those 2 states and Super Tuesday, she probably would have been close to winning.
An Obama nomination — after the selective but intentional disenfranchisement of Michigan and Florida, the relentless race-baiting by Obama and his surrogates, and the venom from his supporters — is repugnant to many of us who, to use Arthur Schlesinger’s phrase, are unrepentant and unreconstructed liberals and New Dealers.
What we are witnessing is nothing short of the breakup of the historic Democratic coalition. Chris Bowers, Obama supporter and writer at Open Left, dreams of a cultural change in an Obama Democratic Party which is almost a parody of the brie and Chardonnay stereotype:
There should be a major cultural shift in the party, where the southern Dems and Liebercrat elite will be largely replaced by rising creative class types. Obama has all the markers of a creative class background, from his community organizing, to his Unitarianism, to being an academic, to living in Hyde Park to shopping at Whole Foods and drinking PBR. These will be the type of people running the Democratic Party now, and it will be a big cultural shift from the white working class focus of earlier decades.
Further illustrating their break with traditional liberalism, Markos Moulitsas has declared himself a libertarian Democrat, in other words: a politically correct Republican. These neo-liberals are really proposing a Party run by those who have little need for government and instead focus on identity politics, environmentalism, post-partisan government, and the rejection of American exceptionalism. The neo-liberals demonize the traditional Democratic base of poor white voters precisely because these voters rely on government and expect their leadership to fight partisan battles on their behalf. They are also deeply patriotic and weary of the moral relativism put forward by the likes of Jeremiah Wright.
Because of Obama’s anemic performances in West Virginia and Kentucky, the campaign and its supporters imagine a new Party. Sean Wilentz writes
the Barack Obama campaign and its sympathizers have begun to articulate much more clearly what they mean by their vague slogan of “change” - nothing less than usurping the historic Democratic Party, dating back to the age of Andrew Jackson, by rejecting its historic electoral core: white workers and rural dwellers in the Middle Atlantic and border states.
It remains to be seen whether the breakup of the Democratic Party more resembles (A) the McGovern disaster of 1972 and 20 years in the wilderness, or (B) a dismantling of the current coalition more akin to the Republicans replacing the Whigs in 1856.
In whatever form our Party takes, the perpetrators of this breakup are the Obama campaign and the neo-liberals. It’s their demonization of low-income white Americans which is largely the cause of our coalition’s breakup. Wilentz continues:
Without a majority of those voters, the Democrats have, since the party’s inception in the 1820s, been incapable of winning the presidency. The Obama advocates declare, though, that we have entered an entirely new political era. It is not only possible but also desirable, they say, for Democrats to win by turning away from those whom “progressive” pundits and bloggers disdain variously as “Nascar man,” “uneducated,” “low information” whites, “rubes, fools, and hate-mongers” who live in the nation’s “shitholes.”
Hillary’s ability to keep this race so close, with virtually no African American support, shows Obama’s incredible weakness as a candidate. This is not because of race, as the neo-liberal race-baiters would have you believe, but because Obama does not articulate an economic message which appeals to low-income whites. According to Wilentz:
Every poll shows that economics, health care, and national security are the leading issues for white working class voters - and for Latino working class voters as well. These constituencies have cast positive ballots for Hillary Clinton not because she is white, but because they regard her as better on these issues. Obama’s campaign and its passionate supporters refuse to acknowledge that these voters consider him weaker — and that Clinton’s positions, different from his, as well as her experience actually attract support. Instead they impute racism to working class Democrats who, the polls also show, happen to be liberal on every leading issue. The effort to taint anyone who does not support Obama as motivated by racism has now become a major factor in alienating core Democrats from Obama’s campaign.
The class warfare now raging in the Democratic Party, while both sides ostensibly are on the Left, is actually the classic struggle between the proletariat workers (blue-collar whites and Latinos) and the petite bourgeoisie (neo-liberals). African Americans have mostly gone to Obama because of the historic nature of his candidacy; many, however, were pushed to Obama by the race-baiting wedge utilized by Obama and the neo-liberals, a tactic identical in form and result as that used by Lee Atwater and other Republican operatives. Obama’s hostility towards the white working class, as seen with his bitter-gate remarks, is the exact framework from which many of the neo-liberals view this struggle:
Obama’s dismissal of white working people represents a sea-change in the Democrats’ basic identity as the workingman’s party - one that has been coming since the late 1960s, when large portions of the Left began regarding white workers as hopeless and hateful reactionaries.
Arthur Schlesinger, eminent historian and New Frontiersman, foresaw the dangers of identity politics as a substitute for progressive policy. He believed in an activist government which should be used “to improve opportunities and to enlarge freedoms for ordinary people.” The Obama campaign’s desire to win the nomination, regardless of its illegitimacy, and their hostility towards poor white Americans is a movement which is tearing the Democratic Party apart. Many of us believe that the best way to fight for working Americans — regardless of color — is to make sure this movement is defeated.
I agree with you Bud. The goal now is to make sure he is defeated if he is the nominee. Our principals are more important than a Democratic win. We can not condone this kind of behavior by the party or by the Obama campaign.
What happens to the AA voters when he/she realize that they were used only for the purposes of defeating the Clintons? Without any of the platforms that benefit any class save the privileged class, who in God’s name does he plan to make this work long term? Bread and circuses?

I ask black people all the time to tell me anything about him but all they worry about is a black man becoming a President. I ask them about Alice Palmer who Obama stole an election from and noone has heard of her. I ask black folks to tell me what he has done for black people besides run for president and again no answer. I am black and was abused for my vote and guess what I am going to vote for Hillary or McCain and I don’t care what the Kool Aide drinkers think or what names they call me.
Sadly many of the Americans that are supporting him, mainly the black voters are going to be very disappointed in Obama and everything he does not stand for. This could potentially set black americans back in this country 20 years.

This looks and smells like the Wallace wing walking out on Harry Truman on one side and the Dixiecrats walking out on Harry Truman on the other side of the 1940s Democratic coalition. This time the racebaiters, however, are coming from the side of the party that should KNOW better. They know who they are and they should take a real long look in the mirror to see what they’ve become. Elitists in the party got their chance in 1972 and that proved a winning combination didn’t it?
Harry Truman pulled a victory because the average american saw him as a fighter and saw him as one of them. They voted for him because they liked him. Average Americans choose presidents. Elitists loose. It’s a history lesson that the DNC should’ve learned along time ago.

Bill Clinton said over the weekend that if Obama is the nominee the Democrats will lose in November. He says polls show she beats McCain however, the media will not show these numbers–they are in Obama’s pocket and refuse to see whats out there. I am hoping that Clinton’s anger will translate to an Independent run for Hillary.

I certainly hope that the Clintons are considering this as a real possibility and beginning to put it together as an alternative. They have always seemed to me that they were the most practical, capable folks in the Dem party for decades. It cheers me greatly to think that Bill has actually admitted that O will lose if he is the nominee. That says that Bill is most probably working away on an alternative. If we’re insulted, he must be more enraged than ever in his lifetime. And I mean enraged in a positive way….
I believe that she has a $250 million war chest that money is hers not the party so actually she has more money then both men so yes there is time. Remember the war chest belongs to the candiate not the party. She is actually in a good position to win as a third party candiate.

I agree and I also agree that we Clinton supportors must be louder then the Obama supportors in mass protests and boycotts of the MSM and of course contacting their advertistors. I voulnteer to lead these charges. I however prefer a third party candiate and Hillary may be interested. I would also like to provide a little history about Hillary.
I have seen the Pundits rule her out more then I care to remember. Remember they said she was going to be indicted even though there wasnt even proof she committed a crime. She did not get indicted. I have heard them say that she would never be the Jr. Senator from a state she did not reside in and we all know that she is the Jr.Senator of New York and I know she will survive this. The word “democracy” was something that the Democratic Party once stood for. No more. It is not a party most will want to belong to if Obama is the nominee. Bill and Hillary Clinton are true Americans and true democrats. They have fought all their lives for the principles of the Democratic Party. If our superdelegates and news media desire it, the Democratic Party can be dismantled and it can then have the blacks, the students, the well-to-do latte drinkers. Seriously, I am so tired of people saying only the “uneducated” support Hillary Clinton. I’ll admit, I was take with Obama at first. I had always said I would support either candidate but felt she was a little polarizing. HUH! I cannot recall a time in my life when I’ve seen a candidate so divisive as Obama. Frankly, I don’t want Zbig and his boys back in the White House at all. All these young people who are voting for Obama will certainly have to learn the meaning of “draft” if Obama gets into office. Sure, he’ll get the troops out of Iraq, only to send troops to Eastern Europe.

I have always loved Big Dawg. I thought I would never have another POTUS in my lifetime who connected with and truly cared about the PEOPLE. And then came Hillary. Perhaps in the beginning the Dem leadership (aka cabal of dunces) thought they could wrap things up quickly before any of the PEOPLE caught on to the fact that the race was being rigged for Obama and had been setup for him to win as early as 06 (04??). The weighting of certain minorities over others. Rural areas worth less than urban cities. Gee the convention being timed with the anniversary of the I Have a Dream speech.
But something funny happened on the way to the convention. The voters saw the real Hilary. When all the glamour and polish is rubbed away and the DNC released the hounds to tear her down and take her out of the race (Pelosi, Leahy, Dodd, Kerry, Kennedy et al), Hillary fought them off and stood back up. The media tore her apart and she did it again, faced that mad dog Russert, who I would say actually foamed at the mouth in that ‘debate’ in which the audience actually rolled with laughter at the alleged ‘tape error’ in clips they played, what is this This is Your Life or a frakkin discussion for the PEOPLE to make a decision on who best represents our needs and our nation? rhetorical question, we all know. Whatever they try, we dig our heels in further for HILLARY. She is the one for us, the workers, the families, the educated class who can still relate to the middle, we all choose Hillary.

GOP AND DEM LEADERS-The biggest thing you should pay attention to IMO, is that working class Americans are afraid of Obama and his motivations and his plans. Now I know Americans may seem to have slept through the past two elections, but frankly, many of us thought things would at least be secure under GOP, and were busy trying to survive the past 8 years as the economy spiraled downhill. But as the Fed bails out Bear Stearns and the Fed kept cutting rates lower than they had any business doing, while Greenspan and Bernancke whistled in the dark, and Wall St found a new toy, Housing to play with, we have now had inflation hit levels where we are choosing whether we should buy a gallon of milk for $4.00 or try to get enough gas in the tank to get to work. Our housing values have plummeted and millions of us are upside downs on our loan to value ratio now. Into this step three candidates, Hillary, Obama and McCain.
Hillary has risen above every challenge, the bar raised so many times for her candidacy that is it a skit on SNL. She has, as a wonderful woman told her in her town hall in TX, been polished like gold on the top of the mountain. Whether you believe her message is real or not doesnt matter, WE THE WORKING CLASS BELIEVE IN HILLARY, WE TRUST HER, WE NEED HER, at this point WE LOVE HER. Hilary has connected with us and we are in serious trouble right now and we are CLINGING TO HILLARY, OUR GUNS AND OUR BIBLES.
Lets look at the other 2 candidates, we have Obama, with little to no experience, a record for his state that is pathetic, more shootings there than US fatalities in Iraq, last month IIRC (can Code Pink do a Chicago intervention?)last week or so had highest gas in the nation, and an education system in trouble, with rampant poverty, horrific low cost housing he helped Rezko build and crime out of control, his connections are scary to Americans and we dont know the half of it, his church is racist, period, his inability to distance himself from shady characters shows us he cares more about getting ahead than about doing the right thing, period. He has no discernible ideology other than what is good for Barry that day is good. This guy has made more deals with more people to get into power, the number of potential VPs alone he has hanging on a string is indicative of the way he rolls. IMHO he is a trojan horse filled with various elements who DO NOT LOVE AMERICA AND DO NOT WANT WHAT IS BEST FOR AMERICA EITHER BY INTENT OR THROUGH THEIR OWN SELFISHNESS.
Then we have McCain, a middle of the road GOP who has brought nothing home to AZ and is proud of it, and who is a genuine war hero. I believe him to be moderate and at first I thought Obama will go down in flames in a GE and the MSM will crown McCain, it is wrong, I hate it but we ca survive 4 yrs of this and then have Hilary to fix things in 2012.
Now the working class has seen something more unsettling in the air. It is starting to seem as though the MSM wont flip and be in the tank for McCain in a GE, and the numbers of depressed GOP and DEM voters who do not vote in the GE may allow Obama to win a GE. THIS WOULD BE TRAGIC FOR AMERICA AND I WILL BLAME NOT JUST THE STUPID DEMS BUT THE GOP WHO LET IT HAPPEN.

Call Jeff Immelt at GE ask him what his plans are, I dont think he will tank it for McCain as you expect. Hillary may not be your favorite person, but you KNOW SHE WILL KEEP AMERICA SAFE. You know she will be MODERATE. Hillary will raise the cap gains to Big Dawg POTUS levels. Hillary is AGAINST SS PAYROLL TAX HIKES.
She will work WITH BUSINESS to get health care done WISELY. Big business tells us that outsourcing occurs in large part due to health care costs,workers raises are disproportionately going to pay higher health insurance premiums. This time around big business is all for universal health care and small business will get tax credits from Hillary. American workers will HAPPILY TAKE THEIR HEALTH CARE PLAN, the same health care plan millions of postal workers get now, and we will WORK FOR ANOTHER 4 GENERATIONS WITHOUT A WORD OF DISSENT.
JUST GIVE US HILLARY AND WE’LL KEEP TRUCKIN ALONG. But be advised if you let Obama steal the nomination, you will share the blame as well as the financial fallout that will surely follow. I have never seen people as upset as they are right now. Whatever secret special plan the DNC Cabal of dunces had it is blown. Please let the people have their chosen candidate, not the Manchurian cabal’s elitist wet dream come true. I would be willing to wager that American working class Democrats would be willing to give you certain seats in Congress if you gave us Hillary. We have lists of the SDs who have sold out or who were willing to bend over for the cabal and we will make sure they hear us in the voting booth in November.
Sorry this was long, but I sometimes think with all the machinations and plots and counterplots that perhaps you in the GOP and DEM leadership forget that the sheeple produce 70% of our GDP. THE PEOPLE need to feel safe and secure and cared for to continue to work. I am not ashamed to be in the working class, we love our country and we work damn hard all our olives, we deserve leadership that cares about us, understands us, respects us and protects us. Hillary and McCain are the only candidates running who meet those criteria.
GOP and DEM leadership, I know you operate in something of a bubble, and you may be unaware of how things are being perceived on the ground so to speak, but let me illustrate. I live in a very well to do suburb in AZ, a friend of mine, who is very well off, buys his European cigarettes on the reservation. He always sees plenty of handguns and rifles on the walls for sale. Last weekend he went in and the guns WERE ALL GONE, the walls were full of musical instruments. He asked the Native American what the deal was with the change. The man told him the guns are selling out daily, people are afraid because of the election and then he looked sad and said, and the music, it has stopped.
Pay attention and please make the right decision for America and the American people.

ginaswo — Your comment is brilliant. Obama talked about young people rejecting wealth in favor of service. But service to whom? I believe Obama does not want a strong middle class and this is the reason he receives so much money from his fat cat supporters. He also believes we have too many elections and it confuses people. However, he has done one stupid thing which most Dictators don’t do until after they get into power and that is diss half the country.
I think the media, the DNC and Obama supporters are nervous because this was supposed to be done quickly and quietly without upsetting the American people. However, Obama is just not selling so they are forcing this down our throats.
I sense that people are scared of Obama and a future with him as President. He has no problem with having friends who hate America and people wonder if this man is really an American. So his support is not really coming from the latte liberals. He is supported by the fatcats powers that be in the world. Latte liberals are just idiots for anything new and they don’t count for much.

I ask peole why they hate Hillary and so far no one has been able to give me a reasonable answer. One woman said I just dont care for her.The Clintons have done much for this country. Hillary specifically has worked her entire life for the peole. It seems to me that Americans should simply look at Obamas life and his associations thats enough. My only addition is that it’s happening because finding solutions for the working class is simply too challenging for the new “creative class.” It’s just that simple. They prefer to be like a woman I once liked who said, “I can’t handle going to Wall-Mart and being around ‘those’ people.”
I grew up in the South, so her remark absolutely struck me as the most hideous, snobbish, condescending remark I’d ever heard.
My own personal reaction was that I decided that ‘I can’t be around this type of snob. It’s just too much to handle’.
