Statement from The Clinton Campaign

Please keep in mind that this is a statement for public consumption and I FERVENTLY hope that much is still going on behind the scenes. NOTE this in the last sentence: “We reserve the right to challenge this decision before the Credentials Committee and appeal for a fair allocation of Michigan’s delegates that actually reflect the votes as they were cast.” And this in the preceding paragraph re Michigan: “[Awarding] to Senator Obama not only the delegates won by Uncommitted, but four of the delegates won by Senator Clinton … violates the bedrock principles of our democracy and our Party. …”

Hillary is poised to be one of the greatest presidents in the history of this nation — and we will not let anything stop her from realizing, for us and for her, the job she can do better than anyone else in the entire nation. She may be the 45th president, if not the 44th. And please donate tonight: with .44. It will LIFT Hillary’s heart, and steel the resolve of her exceptional team of FIGHTERS!

Harold Ickes and Tina Flournoy made the following statement this evening:

Today’s results are a victory for the people of Florida who will have a voice in selecting our Party’s nominee and will see its delegates seated at our party’s convention. The decision by the Rules and Bylaws Committee honors the votes that were cast by the people of Florida and allocates the delegates accordingly.

We strongly object to the Committee’s decision to undercut its own rules in seating Michigan’s delegates without reflecting the votes of the people of Michigan.

The Committee awarded to Senator Obama not only the delegates won by Uncommitted, but four of the delegates won by Senator Clinton. This decision violates the bedrock principles of our democracy and our Party.

We reserve the right to challenge this decision before the Credentials Committee and appeal for a fair allocation of Michigan’s delegates that actually reflect the votes as they were cast.

That is the end of the Democratic Party.

It has now gone on public record that individual votes don’t count.

It has now become the Politburo that the GOP has long accused it of being, only now the Republicans have proof.

It has now validated the 2000 election results.

It has now publicly affirmed the right of of the grandees to cast your vote for you.

It has now abandoned every principle that many of us have fought for all our lives.

It no longer has any high-moral ground to stand on. It is corrupt and (I hope) bankrupt.

And it is at least one member smaller as of tonight.

If this means what I think, its great if Hillary picks up 38 delagates from Florida,,,and I so hope she fights on concerning Mich,Obama did not win any delagates from Mich.

Comment by Nathan Barley | 2008-05-31 19:13:36

Umm. It doesn’t mean what you think. Yesterday, Obama needed 41 delegate votes to clinch the nomination; Clinton needed 244.

Today, Obama needs 64 votes; Clinton needs 240.5.

There are 291 delegates remaining.

Over by Friday.

Comment by alee21 of Michigan | 2008-05-31 18:54:12

As a voter from Michigan, I can’t believe the decision the committee made for Michigan. There is no rhyme or reason to their decision. So, in the end, the people of Michigan are doubly cheated on by the DNC and Obamaites:
1. our vote only counts for 1/2, much less than those caucus states where only tens of thousands of people show up as opposed to the 600,000+ who voted
2. even though we didn’t vote for Obama, he gets our votes.
Is this democracy?
Why sould we support the democratic nominee chosen by arbitrary and unfair rules?

They took Clinton’s delegates and gave it Obama, who removed his name from the MI ballot?! Insanity!

Comment by Jolene | 2008-05-31 20:22:00

This is outrageous.

It is a declaration of they want to support Obama at any cost.

They should be ashamed of themselves for not even hiding their bias.

OUTRAGEOUS.

I will be leaving the Democratic Party because there is no rhyme or reason for taking delegates from the person who the voters voted for, and giving them to a man who was listed as uncommitted along with other candidates. Why? Why?

How can this be happening in plain sight and then saying they want to bring the party together.

They have sealed their own fate.

Comment by yttik | 2008-05-31 18:55:24

How can they possibly take delegates away from Clinton when her name was on the ballot and those people knew exactly who they were voting for?

That’s just irrational.

Comment by terri | 2008-05-31 21:40:28

Yes, and his name was on the ballot in FL and she won it and they still gave him half the delegates. Just stinks. There’s something so rotten going on in this country. I think it started when Bill Clinton got elected. The Bush got in on corruption and now the U. S. is a banana republic.

In Ohio, we can’t change our affiliation until — believe it or not — the next primary. So my vote as a Democrat will go to a Republican. Hope that they can do math. Ohio is now RED. I will be donating to John and working for him. My family will be pissed, but a McCain sign goes on my lawn if the party puts that putz on the ballot.

This should not only be an insult to Michigan voters but also to the nation that the Democratic party is not a party of the people but of its chosen leaders, and I sincerely hope that Hillary Clinton takes this battle right through to the convention and in my gut, if the Republicans have a tape of Michelle, then bet last dolloar the Clintons have it as well and should leak it out to prove to America the reality of these marxist Obama’s!

Comment by Billo | 2008-05-31 18:58:26

I’m starting to think Hillary’s camp is playing us all.

I think this ‘take it to Denver’ is a ploy to keep us all registered Dem for as long as possible hoping we magically forget was racists Michelle and BoBo are.

Rush has long said Hillary was a commie, so maybe she is playing us worse than barky.

Comment by Strawberry | 2008-05-31 19:01:15

That was uncalled for, step off little man.

Comment by ChrisXP | 2008-05-31 19:15:58

Actually, he does have a point. If you look at Hillary’s own words about “unity”, and possibility of taking it to the convention (long after the last ability to change party affiliation) it can be seen as a ploy.

These are politicians who will throw more than waffles when it comes to party loyalty.

It’s important that every true Hillary supporter who wishes to have a backup plan (the ability to vote in the GE, especially in states that require voter party registrations) to switch parties BEFORE the deadline. You can still protest, but still be able to vote your conscience.

Thank God I live in a state that doesn’t require party registration. Vote for Hillary in the primary, then vote for ABO (Anyone But Obama) in November — and still love being an Independent. :)

Comment by Adrienne Grey | 2008-05-31 20:23:38

I don’t get it. The convention isn’t long after anything.

First, most states let you change affiliation 30 days or less before an election.

Second, you can vote, or not vote, for any Presidential candidate in the General, regardless of affiliation.

Is there some state that doesn’t have open voting in the General?

*****A

Comment by ChrisXP | 2008-05-31 21:08:42

First, most states let you change affiliation 30 days or less before an election.

Well, from looking at this, most won’t be able to change party affiliation now…

You do not have to vote for a Democrat in the GE just because you are still affiliated with that party. In addition you can register to vote in the GE almost right up to the election.

However, Hillary has stood by the Democratic Party through years of abuse by both Republicans and Democrats. She truly feel a responsibility and love for the party she has worked so hard to represent. And I think it would be almost impossible for her to leave. It would truly break her heart (and Bill’s)

She has a lot more loyalty than I do. I do not expect to be a Democrat anymore by August. I can still vote for Hillary if she is on the ballot or if they allow write-ins in Colorado. But, though I’ve been a Democrat almost as long as Hillary has, I’ll be Goddamned if I’ll vote for Obama. And I will not work for the Party anymore or donate to their f@$#&ing congressional campaigns.

This Party doesn’t stand for what I thought it did all these years. I’ve forgiven a lot, I’ve awaited and waited for them to stand up for me and mine. I’m an independent from now on, and I’ll support whoever I think is best.

Comment by ChrisXP | 2008-05-31 21:42:03

You do not have to vote for a Democrat in the GE just because you are still affiliated with that party. In addition you can register to vote in the GE almost right up to the election.

Again, read the link above.

Even in GA, that has open primaries, new voters have to register MONTHS BEFORE to vote in the GE. This is why when Bill Clinton ran in 1992, the DP in my area set up voter registration booths all over (including the front of Wal-Mart!) 6 months in advance to ensure the voters COULD vote in November. Heck, we even REQUIRE verified IDs to vote in any political election, too — and without none of this nonsense about it hurting voter participation, either. We want voters to vote in their precints, not anywhere they chose. Afterall, the DP has a history of having deceased voting!

Comment by Mary | 2008-05-31 19:13:13

I’m finished with the Democratic Party FOREVER.

4 of Hillary’s votes given to Obama after he voluntarily removed his name from the ballot?

I don’t think so.

Stick a fork in him.

Say hello to President John McCain.

Comment by Patriot | 2008-05-31 20:02:00

Screw McCain, forget Hillary.

You people are all narrow minded hypocrites.

Splitting the votes in Michigan and Florida, when they shouldn’t be counted at all, is a gift to your candidate.

I would have voted for Hillary over McCain, if she had won the primary fairly, but if you would even consider voting for McCain over a democratic nominee, you are ignorant and deserve what you will get.

Comment by Patriot | 2008-05-31 20:25:59

She can always run as the scorched earth party nominee.

Maybe the Clinton party since they are only in it for themselves.

Comment by ChrisXP | 2008-05-31 21:50:40

And you’re for who? Considering this is a pro-Hillary site, and most here are rooting for her, commenting that neither Hillary or McInsane is a candidate is trolling.

Party types are used to parties and will affiliate with them (I’m hoping more will become Independents, so they can vote their conscience, not “just for party”, considering this election candidates is an example of what that damage can do). If they can’t stand Obama on principles, and they rather exercise a hard won right to vote, it’s wrong and foolish to tell them to “stay home” or “not vote” because they can’t stand a party’s nominee. Every American needs to vote as a duty.

Comment by Catriley | 2008-05-31 18:59:23

How DARE they TAKE delegates from Hillary? The people that voted for her in MI do not deserve to have their votes given to someone else.

Whose votes does the lost 4 delegates represent?

A 93 year old woman that got to vote for the chance to see a female president in the White House, after being born before women could vote?

A father of a chronically ill child who knows that if he loses his job his child will no longer be insured?

The single parent living paycheck to paycheck but wants a better life for her children, if she could only afford to go to college?

A new citizen who has escaped political persecution and corruption, who was proud to cast their first vote for their hero, Hillary Clinton?

The mother who told her little girl that she took with her to cast her vote for Hillary, that she could be whatever she wanted?

Whose votes did they take away today?

Comment by so saddened | 2008-05-31 19:36:27

they take 4 delegates that were actually voted for hillary and give them to obama. AND they give obama 55 more delegates, ALL of the uncommitted delegates. weren’t there 4 people other than hillary still in the race at the time? why not 1/4 of the 55? (or, more fairly, none, since he wasn’t on the ballot, by his own choice).

oh, i know….because they decided long ago that the nominee would be obambi and this is just one of the many, many actions they’ve taken to make that happen. they thought some of their earlier actions would be enough to get her out - moving south carolina up, taking away fl and mi’s delegates, etc. when that didn’t work, they just kept it up. this is just the latest salvo.

even if they had given hillary ALL of her fl and mi delegates today and not given obambi any that he didn’t actually earn, it wouldn’t have mattered, because the momentum he got from being the so-called delegate leader for the past 3 months, which he only got because fl and mi weren’t counted, got him an actual delegate lead. but today’s action just adds insult to injury.

the party should just put out a memo that says ha, ha, ha, you stupid voters. you thought you had a choice. obambi is it and screw you!

i say screw them.

lifelong dem, from generations of dem. not any more!

they think we’ll be back. i won’t. and i hope noone will.

This sucks, but here are the take-away positives:

1. Cause to go to Denver, baby!
2. Popular vote now gets counted!

Hillary is now the popular vote leader because Michigan and Florida primaries have been recognized, and tomorrow she will be officially the popular vote leader even without counting Michigan.

So take that and shove it RBC. We got exactly what we needed for the time being.

Denver or BUST. Got that?

Comment by PaganPower | 2008-05-31 19:01:59

Estimate w/IA, NV, ME, WA

Comment by Susaninbosque | 2008-05-31 19:22:02

Ya know, this was my take-away, absolutely but it is still sooo painful. I just did not want to really witness that even though I knew it was coming. And I smell money, of course. Thanks, Uppity - good to hear the folks who just decide to trash democracy.

I am just amazed that these people don’t recognize that this looks and feels like 2000 when a “decision” just wiped out voters. But in some way it does remind me of 2004 when Kerry would not stand up and fight for us like he could have and should have.

My husband just pointed out that how so many of the folks in Obama’s cabal are just people we never liked.

Comment by beebop | 2008-05-31 19:39:46

But some of the people in that cabal are people we VOTED for … Kerry, Kennedy, Edwards ….
and they are forever as tainted by what happened today as Obama as far as I am concerned. They are just as complicit as if they made the decision. They are traitors to the Democratic party. Or, the Democratic party that was.

Comment by M | 2008-05-31 20:09:47

Agree with you T.Darlin. Agreed, there is a chess move being made here. Perhaps this was just the ostensible reason HRC needed to keep up the fight. It was quite a moment when Ickes spoke about the credentials committee.

The one question that I have about this day’s activities — at least what we saw had to do with the AA committee member who spoke after Ickes. Did anyone get what he was saying? It was outrage about something, but I didn’t get it. He was steamed.

Still praising Moss? Even after his “skin condition” sermon? He is hopeless.

even if Hill had gotten all Michigan’s delegates, she still wouldn’t be close to winning the nomination. regardless of today’s actions, she still lost.

Its’ a long way to August. Better stick another shoulder on that skeleton closet door of Mr. Sleeze.

Which is why Hillary MUST NOT WITHDRAW. She doesn’t have to campaign anymore after this week. But she MUST NOT WITHDRAW. She MUST be available for the delegates to vote for come August.

I wonder what other lifelong connections Obama will have cut by then.

That brontosaurus femur is a lee-etle too big and heavy. Just stick the corner of the file cabinet against the door - yeah, that looks ok.

Obama had to throw his church of 20 years under the bus today, ya got that? Most people in the US attend some sort of church. They will see him as a man with no integrity who joined a church to gain the black vote or a man with no loyalty to those closest to him…or both. He cannot win in November against a man who spent 5 years in a POW camp for his country.

The Super Delegates decide who the nominee is AT THE CONVENTION and not until. They can all change their minds between now and August, so stay tuned.

America deserves the BEST! THE NEXT PRESIDENT OF THE US! PRESIDENT HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON !

why obama? he does not even know the correct number of states America has? maybe he is already adding the 7 (towns of his families, including Odinga, his corrupt cousin) from Kenya. SCARY !
