Ohio Gov. Strickland: No Obama

Original published on 6/11/08, along with comments, lost to server error.

Ohio Governor and Hillary Clinton supporter Ted Strickland told NPR that he would turn down Obama if asked to be Vice President on the ticket. Via ABC:

Asked on NPR’s “All Things Considered” if he is auditioning to be Obama’s running mate, Strickland said, “Absolutely not. If drafted I will not run, if nominated I will not accept and if elected I will not serve. [Listen to the full NPR interview.]

So, I don’t know how more crystal clear I can be.”

Not long ago, Hillary Clinton won the Ohio primary by nearly 10 points. Ted Strickland tirelessly campaigned for her. “Strickland would have allowed Obama to present his selection as a play towards party unity,” ABC said.

When asked about Obama’s chances of winning Ohio in the general election, Strickland was grim:

“I would say somewhere around 5 in a scale of 1 to 10. I think it’s, I just think it’s a challenge because of the nature of our state.”

It’s not a good sign for the Democratic Party when the popular Governor of a general-election battleground state is publicly pessimistic about the presumptive nominee’s chances.

But Ted Strickland, a former minister and prison psychologist, seems like a decent and honest man who wants what’s best for party and the country. Apparently he doesn’t have much confidence that Obama is the right person for the job.

Perhaps he prays the Democratic party will nominate the candidate who CAN — and HAS — won Ohio and other key battleground states.

Gov. Strickland is loved by Democrats as well as Republicans. He say what he means and means what he says. Clinton and Strickland would have been a great combination in 08.

She’s not alone in refusing to support Barack Obama.

And she’s not entirely alone in saying she’ll vote this fall for Republican John McCain instead.

But what makes her unusual is that she holds these views as an elected delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Denver this summer.

“I’m sure people are going to be upset with me,” said Bartoshevich, a 41-year-old emergency room nurse from Waterford in Racine County, and convention delegate pledged to Clinton.

Joe Wineke, chairman of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin, reacted with disbelief when first told Friday afternoon that one of his state party delegates is now a McCain supporter.

You have to do what you have to do. Country before party. Too bad it’s come to this. It’s no secret that a large portion of Hillary delegates that were FORCED to back Obama in public, privately say they feel safer with McCain. It’s a sad time. It’s been a week since they FORCED Hillary to endorse Obama. It seems like months.
Hillary is the one with the solutions for this country. We need to take back our country and for Hillary to lead. The delegates need to get some courage and do what Debra Bartoshevich has done. There is no threat of them losing their seat because the REAL VOTERS will come to their aid and help with funds and votes. We need to make a stand and get Hillary nominated. There is no REAL nominee yet regardless of what the pundits say. The GE has not begun! We need Hillary to lead. WE need to storm this like never before.

Another Flag Issue for Obama?

Democrat Presidential candidate Barack Obama already has an issue with wearing American Flag lapel pins, and even with putting his hand over his heart when the American National Anthem is playing. It will be interesting to see how he’ll react (if at all) to the flag hanging in one of his new campaign offices in Houston, Texas.

Yep, that’s right — that is the national flag of Cuba hanging on the wall with none other than Che Guevara superimposed on it.

Now I need Hillary to say the same thing as Strickland. I really, really don’t want her to be the VP candidate, but even more, I don’t want it to look like he rejected her for the spot.

Please, Hillary, announce loudly and clearly you are not interested in being part of this trainwreck. Go back to the Senate. 2012 may be your year. But stay clear of Obama.

On another note- once again, a media figure dies and the media treats it like the death of a Pope or a head of state. Give me a fucking break. Tim Russert wore a Bush pin under his lapel while moderating a Bush-Gore debate in 2000. As a nonpartisan journalist he was a complete and utter fail. He was one of the worst examples of the modern disease called Celebrity “Journalists,” and to people who want honest, balanced reporting free of personal baggage and snark, he will not be missed.

Comment by HARP | 2008-06-14 08:03:19

There goes another choice for Obama`s VP.

Comment by AnninCa | 2008-06-14 09:04:24

She has got to play it straight. She’s dismantled her team very fast. No confusion. She has advised the SD’s to endorse Obama if they need to do so for their own political futures. No confusion.

She has been A Plus, Plus in delivering on her promise that she would work for unity within the party.

*heh…..

She’s not about to give them even an inch to criticize her. He loses? He’s gonna have to take full responsibility.

Comment by Lou | 2008-06-14 14:32:59

I hope that wherever she is, she lays low until the summer is over. I hope she’s in Cape Cod swimming in the Atlantic to wash away the vibes of the pundits. The pundits rating have bombed and they are in search of Hillary to help them raise their ratings.

Comment by cowgirlblues | 2008-06-14 09:10:46

I second that opinion on Russert-his conduct toward Hillary was anything but professional-especially after that debate-when he, and chris mathwes ran thru the halls-shouting “we got the big Marlin” we tripped her up, being a subscriber to media matters, they could write a book on the passes tim gave to the bush administration on the war-sorry-but NBC is giving this more coverage than a head of state dying, how many days will this go on-lets put this in context–he was a reporter–who do you suppose will replace him on meet the press???Mathwes or Olberman-to continue the tradition of yellow journalism??It pains me to see Tom Brokow sitting there on the panel–the last real reporter we could believe.

Comment by AnninCa | 2008-06-14 14:40:11

Me, too. But I like calm newsguys. I frankly never thought Russert got to the “heart” of much. He went for the cheap shot all too often. He turned Meet the Press into some kind of screaming fest.

I never watched after he took over.

But, that aside, 58 is young! Yikes!

That’s just too young for a massive heart attack.

I HOPE that will CHANGE.

I would have liked to have seen those. His 1 would be on July 4th?

Who is advising him, anyway? Talk about chicken-crap! That one is obvious!

The bad part is that we can’t get audiences that are mixed between Dems and Reps. That’s what would make the format work.

Comment by Uppity Woman | 2008-06-14 09:45:33

He won’t do townhall meeting because he can’t put two words together without a teleprompter.

I haven’t decided yet, cowgirl. I love the argument that a vote for McCain sends a big message.

I am not sure. I’m listening to him. I want commonsense. If he’s not commonsense, even if I disagree on some stuff, then I may just throw it away this year and vote Green or Libertarian or something goofy.

I really haven’t made up my mind.

Here in Ohio, it is very clear that Obama will not win this state. I would venture to say that it won’t even be close. If he has polling that shows he’s close in Ohio, then those polled are frickin’ liars. This is the state that went Bush both times. This knuckleheaded state would have releuctantly supported Hillary. But, from everyone I talk to, and I talk with a lot of people in my work, the mood is that this year the Democratic party has put not just the second best candidate forward, but the WORST candidate forward.

People here wonder what the hell the Dem party is doing. They wonder if it is all on some psychotic kind of death trip. And, may I add, this is from Democratic Northern Ohio. They shoot Dems for sport in the central and southern parts of the state. Barry won’t muster 20% support downstate.

Comment by AnninCa | 2008-06-14 08:27:11

Obama is behind in PA, too. Same thing….but this is Pelosi and the insider’s fault. They made the win all about delegate count. Hillary’s argument was based on broader electability, and they twisted arms to make sure that wasn’t really considered.

So when he loses the major swing states, blame them.

Comment by Obama Trolls Are Idiots | 2008-06-14 08:41:26

AnninCA

I have family members in Ohio and they are all saying the same thing and they are all democrats. I also have many friends in Pa that are all ex-steelworkers and they say he will not take Pa. If this is the case what is up with the polls? Who are they polling or are the polls skewed. Just wondering.

If the polls start looking bad for him do you think he will ask Hillary to be on the ticket to save him - I sure hope she does not accept a spot on that doomed ticket.

Comment by AnninCa | 2008-06-14 08:44:42

He’s behind in PA. McCain is ahead. Today’s Gallup Poll has McCain within 3 points on overall election.

He should have polled better after he announced his own nomination. However, he did not get much of a bump.

In North Carolina, he’s still behind….
In Nevada, he is still behind……
These are states he won, too, supposedly.

New Mexico….tie.

He’s ahead in CO, but I’d be willing to bet donuts, he won’t take CO by Fall.

It’s quite clear the voters do not want him. This is what happens when you cheat. It’s reflect of his real support. McCian will win all the states Obama stole the caucuses in. How could they expect people to fall in line for an unqualified candidate?
If they think they can draft Obama then it’s time we revolt and draft Hillary. Tit for tat. The country needs her and is in trouble. We can’t wait until 2012.

Comment by LuigiDaMan | 2008-06-14 08:24:10

Let me reference the black thing: Not voting for Obama is not voting for him because he is black. Not voting for Obama has a lot to do with his inexperience and his reliance on bullshit (ponies and rainbows for those of who who are senstive to the word “bullshit”).

Join whatever party you like. Or, not join and be independent like most of us here on this blog are. The Repugs ARE the party of racial, gender, and sexuality divisiveness. You can see that in everything they do. Andy Sullivan is a card carrying Repug and most of his party would like to see him drawn and quartered.

The Dems are a more mixed party: this is not to say we don’t encompass bigots and misogynists — we do. That’s one thing about America. You are free to be an idiot. That’s what happened in 2000 & 2004!

Comment by AnninCa | 2008-06-14 08:30:04

The willingness to treat people with disrespect was the central trait of so-called progressives within the Dem. party this year. Never again will Democrats be able to claim that Republicans are the ones who are ugly in spirit.

Comment by LuigiDaMan | 2008-06-14 08:47:06

One last post (and I’ll shut up and lurk): If the Obama train wreck is as bad as we think it will be, he will, most likely, be the last black presidential candidate from any party for the next fifty years. (By then, I won’t be around, so you are all on your own!)

Comment by Momar of Iran | 2008-06-14 08:49:53

You speak as if it’s a democratic decision.

I just couldn’t get my mind wrapped around the sexist, non-thinking diatribes I saw for Obama. Then I got it. It’s the far fringe personalities. They are far more like the religious right.

That’s what this coup is. It’s OUR turn letting the loonies take over the party. And the Democrats are about to learn the same less as REpublicans. You can’t just take their vote and then think they’ll be quiet. Nope, they will dominate your party identity now.

Which is precisely why moderates are all huddling together in the middle! LOL* I think both mod Republicans and Democrats are rightfully scared of their own fringe groups.

I agree with you UW.

Of course, some people are getting pretty fed up with all the trolling, fed up enough to just walk away from the keyboard, away from the reach of these trolltards, and talk to real people in the street, who are pretty much saying what we hear, here:

–That Obama is an inexperienced guy who has spent NO TIME in the US Senate, and probably has trouble finding the washroom when he deigns to grace the Senate floor with his presence;

Who came to that job from a PART TIME job as a state senator, where he didn’t even realize how rough it was in his own damn district, and he stole credit for the work of others in crafting his phony resume of “legislative successes.”

Who is an idiot AND a petty crook, with shady friends and “associates” who HOPES to CHANGE the subject so that nitwits will BELIEVE he’s something other than the creepy, fists-o-cash Chicago pol that he in fact is.

What a shoddy candidate.

You don’t need a keyboard to get the impression that “voters who vote” think the guy sucks. Not all are thrilled with McCain, either, they simply see him as the slightly lesser of two evils. It’s like choosing between Dumb, or Dumber. The Old Guy has the advantage of experience, and he’ll have a Democratic Congress to keep him in check. That’s the silver lining, there.

Gov. Strickland cannot possibly appear as an all too eager beaver, Johnny-come-lately Obama enabler given his very public excoriation and rejection of the DNC-annointed candidate who famously lost his state (and all the other battleground states) just a few months back. Thank you for that, Gov. Strickland! “Shame on you, Barack Obama” is the only sound bite that John McCain’s campaign team needs to run in the Buckeye State to remind voters in Ohio and beyond the state line why the harbringer of bogus change does not appeal to people he dismissed as “bitter”. Enjoy your short-lived reign from Chicago while it lasts!

Okay
Hillary has the popular vote even with votes of hers that were stolen from her.
She has all the states necessary to win in the GE.
They didn’t need to force the delegates to come forward for a loser Obama. It just endorses a loser.
They need to let the delegates choose the winner and that is Hillary. We need a Dem in the whitehouse and we are tired of settling for less. No Obama ever.
Delegates come forward for Hillary. A handful of guilty DNC operatives should not be able to bamboozle democracy.
