The Obfuscation Habit

I personally don’t care whether Barack Obama was born or raised Muslim. If anything, I have been bothered on behalf of decent Muslims worldwide, especially those who are law-abiding American citizens, by the derogatory meaning that the term “muslim” now seems to carry in western culture.

I do care, however, that Barack Obama be truthful about his personal and professional background, and his relationships. There are still too many mysteries about this person who may soon be leader of the free world.

To that end, a while back I wrote this on my blog (streamlined here):

The important question is NOT whether Obama has any Muslim history. Rather, it’s whether he’s been truthful about his past.

On the campaign trail in Kansas, Barack told 4 women in a coffee shop:

“My mother was a Christian from Kansas…I was raised by my mother. So, I’ve always been a Christian. The only connection I’ve had to Islam is that my grandfather on my father’s side came from that country. But I’ve never practiced Islam.”

His website repeats it: “Obama Has Never Been A Muslim”

Is Barack telling the truth about his religious background?

By most accounts, Barack’s mother was atheist and “Obama’s father…grandfather… stepfather…Sarah, who Obama calls grandmother…stepbrothers and stepsisters were (or are) Muslims.”

Barack says he’s “never practiced Islam” but others report differently:

Obama’s Indonesian schooling began when he was entered into the Roman Catholic, Franciscus Assisi Primary School on January 1, 1968….registered under the name Barry Soetoro…School documents listed (him) as an Indonesian citizen and his religion was listed as Islam…

According to one of Obama’s teachers and the principal from 1971 through 1989, Barry actively took part in Islamic religious lessons…”I remembered that he had studied “mengaji” (recitation of the Quran).”

Always been a Christian?

Now there is a corroborating story about Obama’s Muslim background. Via the Israeli Insider Friday, the headline is Malik Obama confirms his half-broker Barack grew up a Muslim, and it should be read in full:

Apparently the Obamas of Kenya have been reading those scurrilous emails to which Barack likes to refer, because they have no doubt — contrary to the claims of the Obama campaign, that the presidential candidate was raised a Moslem. They take that as a given.

As the Jerusalem Post reports, “Barack Obama’s half brother Malik said Thursday that if elected his brother will be a good president for the Jewish people, despite his Muslim background. In an interview with Army Radio he expressed a special salutation from the Obamas of Kenya.”

The Obama brothers’ father, a senior economist for the Kenyan government who studied at Harvard University, died in car crash in 1982. He left six sons and a daughter. All of his children - except Malik — live in Britain or the United States. Malik and Barack met in 1985.

In a remarkable denial issued last November that still stands on the official campaign website, Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs issued a statement explaining that “Senator Obama has never been a Muslim, was not raised as a Muslim, and is a committed Christian.”

Apparently Malik Obama, himself a Muslim, had not read the press release.

Melanie Phillips is the most recent commentator to draw attention to the massive body of evidence that leaves no doubt that Barak Hussein Obama was born a Muslim (Islam is patrilineal) and raised a Muslim (so registered in school, acknowledging attending Islamic classes, reported accompanying his step-father to the mosque, and able to recite the Koran in the original Arabic).

Reuven Koret, Aaron Klein and Daniel Pipes have previously pointed to the attempts by Obama and his campaign to conceal the candidate’s Muslim background. The well documented evidence draws upon the on-the-ground interviews by researchers in Indonesia and Kenya, published quotations of Obama’s childhood friends and his school records, as well as the candidate’s own autobiography.

It is not clear whether Barack Obama will now disown his half-brother Malik, or throw him under the campaign bus, for acknowledging that shared family background. In any case, some one should notify “Fight the Smear” tout de suite. Perhaps they can get him with the program.

Again: The important question is NOT whether Obama has any Muslim history. Rather, it’s whether he’s been truthful about his past. And if he’s lying about this aspect of his life, what else is fiction?

Anyone who writes his own history in books, without much verification, is obviously prone to lie.

Comment by Tim in Tempe | 2008-06-15 15:06:35

Bill clinton wrote his own history, did he lie?

How can you make a blanket statment like that?

Comment by AnninCa | 2008-06-15 15:09:47

Bill had a record. Everyone whose ever run for office except Obama has had a record.

He’s just an unknown. Makes sense that he just made it up to please the public.

He probably thought it wasn’t prudent to admit his muslim youth.

I know he lies, but I watched him during the primary repeated do so. So his character is revealed already.

Why would I believe he just started doing that then? LOL*

That would be naive.

Comment by SBwa | 2008-06-15 20:07:25

Barack Obama’s two autobiographies are full of “dramatizations” and “exaggerations” — what some might call lying. The funny thing is that many of them are totally unnecessary (in terms of political expediency). For example, when he recounts his meeting with a half-sister who comes to Illinois to visit him for the first time, he writes about picking her up at O’Hare airport…. but actually, she took a Greyhound bus to the city because she was first visiting a friend elsewhere, and then taking the bus to see Barack. You get the feeling that he just makes stuff up to weave a more beautiful story–if you’ve been to the Greyhound station, you’ll know what I mean.
The other possibility is that he is not aware of his tendency to embellish and lie. A lot of intelligent people who love to listen to themselves speak suffer from this problem.

Comment by Ellen | 2008-06-15 21:16:20

He is NOT a muslim. He attended madatory islamic classes at his school in Indonesia - his father was not a practicing Muslim and his mother was of no religion - why can’t you get it through your thick heads?? I guess you just cannot let it go….he has to have the evil Muslim thing attached to himself or you won’t be content.

Troll. Bill clinton didnt start writing his autobiography till late in his politcal career when he had accomplished much.

Barry Obullshit started writing his erm fabricating his manufactured history while in college and had it published shortly thereafter.

And he still has not accomplished anything but stick his name on other peoples bills and save scripted fainers at ralleys where he gives hopium speaches.

Even an AxelfraudNutNuzzler like yourself must be able to differentiate it.

Comment by Mary Kay | 2008-06-15 16:57:34

Comment by Mandelay | 2008-06-15 16:00:53

Agree. It’s possible to write your autobiography and actually tell some truth. Obama, however, runs around all over America and contradicts the “truth” he’s written down. His religion is an example. And related to that, his public comments regarding Jeremiah Wright and the written comments in his books are at odds. Why does he feel it’s necessary to do this? This is not balanced behavior. Makes me wonder if he has a problem in his head. But more important than wasting precious time trying to reconcile/expose the real vs. fake Obamas … more important than this is the number one mission: to keep him out of office, specifically the office of POTUS. If he wants to spend the rest of his life ironing out his autobiographical contradictions, he can get a reality show and “tell all” each week on t.v. Just keep him out of government. He keeps company with people of greed — greed for money and greed for power. The treasury of the U.S. should not be Obama’s political wallet. Nobama! Ever.

Comment by Ellen | 2008-06-15 21:21:47

Maybe he just did not realize the uproar that Wrights comments would bring about….he just did not realize that there were so many Americans who would not, could not, accept something sooooo different from their little white church pastors. Every politician changes with the wind and their audience….and they embellish their life stories. Honest to God, every association Obama has had is evil to the Hillary supporters….no matter how casual. He will never be seen as anything other than a dirty Chicago politician - its such a joke! Just admit it, you hate the guy - and stop attacking him for the same things over and over and over….

Funny enough. Every time you try to criticize Bush, you get a but but but Clinton response. Why is it that you can’t ask a question of or level a criticism at Obama without one of his supporters — totally avoiding the question/critique — and immediately whining but but but Clinton (either Hill or Bill)? Haven’t we had enough of people not taking responsibility for their own actions? Or inactions? I was under the impression that we were better than that — Democrats I mean. Obviously, I was wrong.

WJC’s history has been re-written by Obama staffers. The was a 4 page memo that came from the South Carolina Obama Campaign alledging he was a racist.

Historical re-writting on a grand scale.

Obama seems to love to fictionalize his history.

One needs no other proof than the dozens of times he has scrubbed his own website.

Most men never stand for an issue, those who do are often heralded. Obama stands twice for issues.
Once for each side!

I personally don’t care whether Barack Obama was born or raised Muslim.

I have to disagree with you 100% on this one. I appreciate your insightful posts BUT ………

If it was any other Muslim other than Obama I might tend to agree with you but the baggage of his past and present friends who have ideologies (some very violent) totally out of whack with mainstream does not allow me to give him an UNVETTED pass.

One can not just turn off a switch to the past and start with a clean slate, even more so when one HIDES their past with such disdain and arrogance.

A very scary read above:
MUSLIM
PERSECUTION OF
CHRISTIANS
By Robert Spencer

The Punishment for Conscience is Death
Converts from Islam to Christianity are often hunted in
the Muslim world, where virtually all religious authorities
agree that such individuals deserve death. Muhammad
himself commanded such a punishment: “Whoever changed
his Islamic religion, then kill him.”45 This is still the position
of all the schools of Islamic jurisprudence, although there
is some disagreement over whether the law applies only to
men, or to women also.
At Cairo’s Al-Azhar University, the most prestigious and
influential institution in the Islamic world, an Islamic manual
certified as a reliable guide to Sunni Muslim orthodoxy
states: “When a person who has reached puberty and is
sane voluntarily apostatizes from Islam, he deserves to be
killed.” Although the right to kill an apostate is reserved
in Muslim law to the leader of the community and other
Muslims can theoretically be punished for taking this duty
12 13upon themselves, in practice a Muslim who kills an apostate
needs to pay no indemnity and perform no expiatory acts
(as he must in other kinds of murder cases under classic
Islamic law). This accommodation is made because killing
an apostate “is killing someone who deserves to die.”46
IslamOnline, a website manned by a team of Islam scholars
headed by the internationally influential Sheikh Yusuf al-
Qaradawi, explains, “If a sane person who has reached
puberty voluntarily apostatizes from Islam, he deserves to
be punished. In such a case, it is obligatory for the caliph (or
his representative) to ask him to repent and return to Islam.
If he does, it is accepted from him, but if he refuses, he is
immediately killed.” And what if someone doesn’t wait for
a caliph to appear and takes matters into his own hands?
Although the killer is to be “disciplined” for “arrogating the
caliph’s prerogative and encroaching upon his rights,” there
is “no blood money for killing an apostate (or any expiation)”
– in other words, no significant punishment for the killer.47

Obama: It’s All a Distraction
Obama on Jeremiah Wright:

Part of what I hope to do in this campaign and as president is to get us beyond these divisions that distract us from our common challenges and our common opportunities and move the country forward.

On going to war in Iraq:

What I am opposed to is the attempt by political hacks like Karl Rove to distract us from a rise in the uninsured, a rise in the poverty rate, a drop in the median income - to distract us from corporate scandals and a stock market that has just gone through the worst month since the Great Depression.

Obama on attacks by Hillary:

We knew that the closer we got to the change we seek, the more we’d see of the politics we’re trying to end — the attacks and distortions that try to distract us from the issues that matter to people’s lives, the stunts and the tactics that ask us to fear instead of hope.

On gay marriage:

The heightened focus on marriage is a distraction from other, attainable measures to prevent discrimination and gays and lesbians.

Obama on race, gay marriage, abortion, and illegal immigration:

We get distracted from solving problems such as health care, employment or the environment because of these divisions. It happens in every election, and it’s not just race. It’s immigration, gay people or abortion. There’s always one of these issues that crops up and prevents us from focusing on vital issues that this country’s long-term well-being depends on us solving.

Its because of political correctness that Obama is where he is. Axelrod knew that Democrats would keep silent and that the MSM would be terrified of airing anything that offended the AA community in regards to Obama.

And yes, too many including many detractors believe that Obama is just guilty of bad “choices” that he’s no racist and doesn’t harbor any ill will towards America. That he’s just another scoundrel.

In 2007, classmate Rony Amiris described young Barry as enjoying football and playing marbles and of being a very devout Muslim. Amir said, “Barry was previously quite religious in Islam.”

“We previously often asked him to the prayer room close to the house. If he was wearing a sarong he looked funny,” said Rony.

Amiris now the manager of the Bank Mandiri, Jakarta, recently said, “Barry was previously quite religious in Islam. His birth father, Barack Hussein Obama was a Muslim economist from Kenya. Before marrying Ann Dunham, Hussein Obama was married to a woman from Kenya who had seven children. All the relatives of Barry’s father were very devout Muslims”

Rony extrapolates further, that Obama at one point had to change his religion if he ever intended later to run for the office of President of the United States because America would never elect a Muslim to the be President of the United States.

Comment by Susan1968 | 2008-06-15 15:20:56

This is not escaping voters’ attention.

Look at the facts:

After Hillary suspended her campaign a week ago, Obama received a paltry 3 additional points over McCain. He went from a 3 point to 6 point lead in polling about the General Election.

Within days Obama slid back to only 3 points over McCain which is well within the 5-point margin of error.

Simply put — Hillary is “out” (for now) and Obama has revceived a net zero lead as a result.

Obama people can spin as much as they want — their candidate is in trouble.

And the trouble comes from Democrats themselves: half the DEM voters reject him.

Hard. Fact.

Comment by Democrat | 2008-06-15 15:26:18

Well, the polls are actually all over the place. Today’s Rasmussen poll, for instance has Obama +7 over McCain, with McCain under 40%.

I always think it’s best to look at a variety of polls.

Comment by Susan1968 | 2008-06-15 15:36:39

I was looking at poll averages on Real Clear Politics.

I tracked them — for both parties — during the primaries.

The RCP poll averages were consistently on the money.

But it doesn’t matter, historically the “presumptive nominee” get a double digit bounce when the primary is over, and over the next few weeks it stabilizes to a single digit lead.

Obama fails to meet this benchmark.

Hillary’s decsion to stay in the race till the last state voted was BRILLIANT.

It denied Obama the op[portunity to get an automatic bounce from primary states that didn’t get a chance to vote in the primary.

Comment by Madam DeFarge | 2008-06-15 15:39:55

Obviously, pollsters are going to beef up Obama until after the convention when and if there is no chance of Hillary becoming the nominee.

Apostasy in Islam (Arabic: ارتداد, irtidād or ridda) is commonly defined as the rejection of Islam in word or deed by a person who has been a Muslim.

The four major Sunni and the one major Shia Madh’hab (schools of Islamic jurisprudence) agree that a sane adult male apostate must be executed.[1] They differ on the punishment for a female apostate - some schools calling for death and others for imprisonment. Whether Sharia laws governing apostasy are derived from the hadith traditions alone or also from the Qu’ran is disputed. According to Wael Hallaq nothing of the apostasy law are derived from the Qur’an,[2] although the jurist al-Shafi’i interpreted the Qu’ranic verse 2:217 as providing the main evidence for apostasy being a capital crime in Islam.[3]

A minority of medieval Islamic jurists, such as Hanafi jurist Sarakhsi,[4] Maliki jurist Ibn al-Walid al-Baji, and Hanbali jurist Ibn Taymiyyah,[5] and some contemporary Islamic jurists, such as Shafi`i Grand Mufti Ali Gomaa[6][7] and Shi’a Grand Ayatollah Hossein-Ali Montazeri,[8] argued or issued fatwas that either the changing of religion is not punishable or is only punishable under restricted circumstances, but these minority opinions have not found broad acceptance among the majority of Islamic scholars.[9][10][11][12]

Some prominent contemporary examples of death sentences or threated issued for apostasy include Salman Rushdie, who was condemned to death in 1989 by Ayatollah Khomeini, (ruler of Iran at the time) for his book The Satanic Verses; and Abdul Rahman, an Afghan convert to Christianity who was arrested and jailed on the charge of rejecting Islam” in 2006 but later released as mentally incompetent.[13]

In Black Liberation Theology “Christian” means something very different than “Not a Muslim.” In fact, I read that in Afro-Centric religious traditions, one could be a Christian AND a supporting member of NOI.

BO makes up shit on a moment by moment basis, depending on what’s called for at the time. If he were anything more than a puppet for Chicago takeover of the DNC, he would certainly be a sociopath.

BO is a creation, of his own imagination, of the party power-mongers, and of the mainstream press.

More facts that will hurt Obama.

No one is talking about people who vote solely on tax issues.

The DNC will never let you know how many independents and Democrats voted against Kerry because they LIKED the GOP tax cuts.

I know. I argued with these voters in 2004 because I beleived Kerry would withdraw our troops from Iraq.

You’d be amazed how many democrats, who initially voted Gore in 2000 then, after seeing how they benefitted from Bush tax cuts, voted Bush in 2004.

I argued with these people begging them to not trade money for our soldiers lives.

They would not budge. Bush gave them more money in their pockets. They voted with their wallets. So did many independents.

Obama says he will raise payroll taxes on people making over $250G.

Obama’s camp will tell you only 10% of Americans make over $250G

But he neglects to mention that 10% of 300-million Americans = 30-million voters.

30-million is a lot of voters.

And traditionally people who make $250G do tend to vote. (Poverty level people are less likely to vote.)

Now let’s look at those making $250G more closely.

I have a friend in NYC who makes a tad over $250G on payroll. He’s taxed 3 times: Federal, State and City. These three taxes take a healthy third from his gross wages.

That means he nets about 82G. That’s $6800 per month. Seems like a lot but let’s look closer.

He owns a home on Long Island, his Real Estate taxes are mind boggling. These alone run him $800 per month — just in real estate taxes, then add in his $2500 mortgage and now he’s down to $3500 to spend on other things.

His utility/water bills around $600-700/mo.

Car insurance for 3 vehicles, another $500/mo.

Cable, telephone bills — just the basics, another $300 per month.

Now he’s down to around $2000 per months, which works out to $500 per week BEFORE factoring in cost of gas and groceries.

Oh yeah — he’s married with two kids about to go to college.

And note we did not mention credit card payments or any other bills. Just the basics.

He said to me recently that some months even he lives from paycheck to paycheck.

And I believe him.

Obama wants to raise his taxes — you know what he said to me?

“I can’t afford to vote for Obama.”

How many of those 30-million Americans making over $250G feel the same about Obama’s promise to raise their payroll taxes?

The Audicity Of Hope has failed to factor in the Audacity of of our very real economic problems.

Obama is also wanting to raise Social Security taxes on those making over $90K a year, so add that group ($90K - $250K) to the one’s who will pay more taxes under Obama.

Hillary was not going to raise the Social Security Taxes on people making over $90K.

Also true on the SS taxes.

Obama is squeezing the middle class to pay for his “Dream.”

Excellent post above Susan 1968.

This guy doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

Also, I don’t care if he’s Muslim either. I’m AA and live in the urban community. I have neighbors who are Muslim.

I do care about the lies and the secrets. I could understand wanting to keep the subject off drug use as a teen, or even sexual indiscretions. But this religion thing is indicative of calculation on his part. If he’s lying about never having been a Muslim, it’s for the purpose of getting elected. So, did he convert for that reason, too? That won’t go over big with people who are devout in either faith. It smacks of cunning and a lack of spiritual goodness.

To me, Obama could have explained his being a Muslim as a child easily and it would be off the table. NO CHILD has autonomy over what religion they practice. His mother was an atheist after all. He could have easily dismissed this and claimed that he didn’t practice after he came from Indonesia all during his teenage years and then found Jesus and Christianity. People would have bought that.

Then there are the secrets about his college years. He is an historic candidate. Do you think the country and the world wouldn’t want to know these details? If he becomes the first black President (biracial in my book) he would be noted by historians and scholars through the ages and his life would have to be an open book. Obama seems to want to keep his book closed or at the very least only release his own personal version. If he omits things, he doesn’t want to be questioned about it.

I don’t like that.

I was a child when JFK ran. I kept a scrapbook and I can tell you that even back then, there was a lot of details released about him and the Kennedy clan and Jacqueline Onassis. Of course, the Kennedys guarded certain details but even some of them came out. Maybe they weren’t sensationalized, but they came out.

And since there are questions about how well he knows certain individuals like Ayers, Rezko, etc., it suggests a pattern of lying. And since Hillary was excoriated for lying about Bosnia, that one lie, I think Obama should at least be questioned on this.

He has no respect for the middleclassness. He can’t confront the negitives within himself and actively blames others for this.

The button I fear most is what his indifference seeks to control. NOT

According to Ben Stein, BO’s proposed tax hike on capital gains will hurt–oh, take a wild guess–the middle class, especially those making between $50K-$150K.

So, how is he better than Bush? I can’t afford this…we’re hurtin’ enough where we are.

I agree, Susan. McCain will start to make this clearer to people. Alot of people can’t afford Obama.

Comment by Susan1968 | 2008-06-15 16:12:27

Ann — you’re in California.

My friends in California making around $25G are having a harder time than my friends in NYC.

One friend, whoo’s wife was horribly nurdered last year (she was a teacher) had to sell his house because, with teir combine incomes they were making about $250G, but with the loss of her income he could not afford his home.

He had to sell his house inthe middle of his grief over the tragedy.

The Obama’s act like people making between 92-250G are rich.

With inflation and the low value of the US dollar, these numbers make you middle class at best.

Obama will tax the middle class.

Comment by Susan1968 | 2008-06-15 16:14:13

TYPO: I meant friends in CA making 250G per year.

His small business tax will hurt more women than men. We’re the majority of small business owners.

CA is crazy to vote for him. His health plan won’t help us one bit with our uninsured problem that’s killing us. His cut-offs, as you say, don’t work for us. Dual income families will be hurt.

It’s a disaster.

stop moving the goal posts with your “facts”.

Non partisan Tax policy institute says you’ll be taxed less than McCain.

Unless over $250,000 which is 3.5% not 10% of the population.

Comment by HARP | 2008-06-15 16:35:21

You have the mathematical abilities of a Clydesdale.

Comment by Mary Kay | 2008-06-15 17:02:06

Really, because I read a non-partisan souce that said Obama’s taxes (if all were passed) could amount to as much as $8,500 per family and would actually impact anyone making over $31,000. Hillay’s plan wasn’t as aggressive. I understand that’s why the stock market got so nervous every time Obama won a primary, but had a good day following a Clinton win.

Larry should find out the truth about Obama’s tax policy and see which report is right.

Comment by BluDawg | 2008-06-15 17:05:31

It won’t matter what Obama sez now.
He’ll throw his tax policy under the bus too!

“That was not the tax policy I knew”.

It goes over very well with his young supporters who think $92K is rich.

Comment by rwc | 2008-06-15 18:07:23

I’m sorry but folks pulling down $250k are not middle-class. Professional and boss class yes, middle-class no.

And this group ought to be paying into Social Security. What is it with the professional class to think they are exempt from the same taxes that some poor soul who works at Wal-Mart or who happens to clean the houses of the boss class.

Comment by SBwa | 2008-06-15 20:11:52

Obama is going to raise the payroll tax, so you don’t have to be making 250K before you’ll get hit hard (and before your employer will get hit hard).

Susan1968;

Having lived in both places and looking at the declining dollar, it is unimaginable that I could vote for Obama based on his economic positions or live in NYC. I would have to clear 10k a week. At least where I live in California I acan hunt for food if the coming breakdown in civil order requires it. I won’t freeze to death. as I have witnessed as a teenager living in NYC.

It must have been personally embarresing for him to be corrected by Charlie Gibson. He looked so unprepared, even to speak clearly on his own positions that I would not believe him if it was the day I won the powerball.

Reality check … Median Household income for a family of 4 in California is about 75K and the distribution tails off very quickly above that. Only 15% of US households make in excess of 100K

100-250K … while no longer rich is definitely not middle class.

A large percentage of his supporters are still on Mom`s health insurance and have No idea what it`s like to try and balance a budget. And that’s before kids come along.

Comment by SBwa | 2008-06-15 20:12:58

Another large percentage of his supporters are multi-millionaires.

Tim. Hillary is out of the race. It’s over. We’re stuck with Obama or McCain or stay home, vote Green, or vote Libertarian.

I get it more than you folks do. So scrutinize McCain policies like Obama and see who is going to do a better job for the country.

Read how they are now treating the Clinton delegates. Just read. You think this attitude isn’t driving us out?

Think again. I’d vote for anyone before Obama.
