Obama’s Scorched Earth Policy [UPDATE]

My conviction that Barack Obama is singularly unqualified to be President grows with each passing day. And today provided another sign that this man-child is a petulant prick. For the first time in memory, a candidate for the office of President has named the Chief of Staff for their eventual Vice Presidential candidate. Got that? Rather than trust the Vice Presidential nominee to choose their own guy or gal, the Obamas went and got it done.

And the lucky winner? The New York Observer reports:

Hillary Clinton’s former campaign manager Patti Solis Doyle has just been officially named “chief of staff to the Vice Presidential Nominee” by the Obama campaign.

Now that is rich. Obama taps a person who is a demonstrated failure as a campaign director and gives her the task of riding herd on his eventual VP nominee. Gotta admire the chutzpah of the Obama. And how did top dollar Clinton folks react?
New York Observer offered this catchy title, Clinton Bundler on Obama’s Doyle Pick: The Biggest ‘Fuck You’ Ever. Can you feel the warmth? Now there is hope we can believe in.

This is one more “tell” of the kind of political player Barack is. Rather than reaching out and seeking Hillary’s help in healing the rift in the Democratic party, he has removed his socks and stuck his stinky feet in the festering wound. I have been told by well connected Democrats that some senior Democrats in the Senate are beside themselves at the petulance and immaturity of Barack.

What could Barack do? Well, for example, he could have called prominent Democrats who are running for re-election and who backed Hillary. He could have thanked them for their loyalty, encouraged them to hang with Hillary till the convention, and offered help in raising money to beat their Republican rival in the Fall. That’s what a leader would have done. Barack, instead, has let his troops attack those who had the temerity to support Hillary. And instead of healing rifts, they prefer a scorched earth.

As the August Convention nears, more Democrats will come to the shocking realization that Barack’s bare knuckles politics may work well in the corrupt confines of Chicago, but are a non-starter for healing a nation wounded by partisan battles. This is not the change folks are looking for.

UPDATE: Was Doyle a mole? Did she deliberately sabotage the Hillary campaign? Turns out she had worked with David Axlerod, Obama’s guy and her brother is a Chicago alderman and she worked for Richard Daley. Did she deliberately tank Hillary’s campaign and betray the trust put in her? Legitimate questions.

I’m glad to hear that there are some senior congresspeople seeing the immaturity.

He’s poking the snake, for sure.

Comment by Democrat | 2008-06-16 21:04:37

Who are you talking about? The diary didn’t quote a single member of Congress.

Oh, and Clinton issued a statement in support:

“Patti will be an asset and good addition to the Obama campaign. After nearly two decades in political life, she brings with her the ability to tap an extensive network that will be a huge asset to Senator Obama. As Senator Clinton has said, we’re all going to do our part to help elect Senator Obama as the next President of the United States,” said spokesman Mo Elleithee.

Did you know that Doyle’s brother is a Chicago City Councilman? Is he apart of the machine, I don’t know.

But it is interesting to think whether she was a mole in the Clinton camp, screwing up the campaign, blowing HIllary’s money so fast.

Who needs this BS…???

Comment by MaryPat | 2008-06-16 23:22:43

Like when he brushed Hillary off his shoulders, for instance?

Hiring Solis-Doyle was another “stick it to Hillary” (and her supporters) move. Even David Gergen on CNN said it was a horrendously stupid thing to to do.

Not that Barry cares. The Democratic Party now belongs to him, and he clearly thinks the White House does, too. The man’s arrogance knows no limits. Has he ever heard that “pride goeth before a fall?”

Comment by DAB | 2008-06-17 06:27:38

Other recent examples are unnecessarily taking four Michigan votes from her and circulating Olbermann tirade about Hillary’s RFK assassination remark. The man has no concept of what is involved in being a graceful winner since he insists on on continuing his “thumb in her eye” approach. What a total jerk!

Anonymous sources work fine for Vanity Fair when they trash a former President. Regardless, it has been reported that black politicians who supported Hillary were pressured by the Obama campaign. So, he is going after his “enemies” in the Democratic party like Machiavelli’s Prince. We all know that Hillary will go on record as saying something gracious, even though Patti is either an idiot or a traitor.

They can both take their sorry selves over to Obama camp. He deserves these losers. They will drag any candidacy down. Hillary kept giving them chance after chance until it was a losing proposition and no longer doable.

Comment by Obama's gums look sick | 2008-06-16 22:08:07

I vote both: idiot and traitor. Let’s see how well she will be embraced by the inner circle now that she has served her purpose to rub this act of treachery into Clinton’s face.

Obama has told us he is going to totally control the message his campaign sends out so who better than Solis-Doyle who has proven her lack of utility to anyone. What a splendid way to neutralize any VP hogging the spotlight than putting this bitch on the VP guy’s/gal’s tail.

What a stupid Obama blunder. And still so early. Just like having his very first official meeting with the biggest special interest group of them all, the SEIU and Obama promised them a blank check.

Please wake me up when we get to the “change” part of his campaign.

Thank you for this article, Larry, and especially for the update. I was wondering why no one else has mentioned it, but it seems like an obvious question to me.
I’ve thought for a long time that Obama had moles sabotaging both Hillary’s and Edward’s campaign. Toward the end of Edward’s campaign he began doing some very dumb and un-Edwards like things. One of these was in the N.H. debate when he joined Obama in attacking Hillary, and praised Obama as an agent of change and for not taking lobbyists money. This was after Obie had stolen caucuses, attacked Edwards for 527 ads, and pretty much knocked him out of the race. It was a shock to hear him go on to praise him, and my first thought was he was getting very bad advice from his handlers. He did a few more dumb things like that, and was knocked out.
The time Hillary said it was a privilege to campaign with Obama seemed like the same type of disconnect, and seemed very wrong. Same message as Edwards, both times it looked like they were dropping out and endorsing Obama for pres. Few days after this Hillary confronted Obama, saying “shame on you.” I liked this, thought it was long overdue, but all the pundits said she had Multiple Personality Disorder. Strange timing and juxtaposition of statements.
Weird advice from her campaign. Set up by Obama and Axelrod, maybe? Feels like their handiwork.
Edwards advisors’ went to work in Obama campaign, too.
I really believe he was paying them to give bad advice and sabotage the other campaigns. Solis now gives more evidence.
Any way you can check this out, Larry? Any canaries from his campaign?

Comment by Zee | 2008-06-17 08:32:25

I agree, Speaktruth…my jaw dropped when Edwards ganged up on Hillary during that NH debate.

And….I was there in NH, working for him. I remember they pulled me out of one place saying that Obama had it wrapped up and they needed to work elsewhere. I was completely baffled because I’d been on the streets house to house for a few days and ran into next to NO support for Obama. It was all Hillary, and the Hillary supporters were very charming, too. I was so surprised by the strength of her support and the lack of any data reflecting this.

People like Mark Crispin Miller then went off his nut, suggesting that the Clintons tampered with the VOTE, and dismissing my experience as “anecdotal.”

Yeah, the votes AND the residents matched in supporting Hillary, but all these activists who used to claim to be part of the “reality-based” community swallowed the bogus talking points and trumped up media campaign.

I’m afraid even if evidence is produced on Obama’s tampering in the Edwards and Clinton campaigns that the Obamaborg won’t be able to perceive it after turning their brains over to the Collective.

Comment by Auntie Meme | 2008-06-18 01:39:37

Sure, the diary didn’t quote a single member of Congress. It didn’t have to. Don’t you know that Larry has shocking video footage that he’s going to reveal, er, well, maybe never? But that’s not the point. The point is that literally hundreds, maybe thousands, maybe millions, of members of Congress are really pissed off.

I love the no-win mentality of some of these embittered Clinton folks. If Obama doesn’t bring on any Clinton staff, that’s a big F.U. to Hillary. If he does, that’s also a big F.U. to Hillary.

Not to mention, it’s really inconsiderate of him to bring on people from her campaign who lost. Why doesn’t he bring on someone who at leas helped her win the primary? The nerve!!! Obama is so out of touch with reality. But he’ll get a wake-up call in November, when this very realistic scenario plays out: every single person who voted for Hillary in the primary votes for Bob Barr.

Obama and his supporters just don’t get it, I guess.

Comment by AnninCa | 2008-06-16 21:15:12

Didn’t matter to me. Obviously, the delegate distribution method is highly flawed. I thought the SD’s would use their political judgment and see that she had won the major states, put together a much broader coalition, and had the momentum going.

Pelosi and Dean are the ones who made it about delegate count. They misinfomed the public about that. Then Clyburn made sure to wield the threat of “blood in the streets.”

I still thought she’d be allowed to prove her electability argument.

I was wrong. The fix was in.

And so it goes.

But I see the fix. I know the players who went along with it and who pushed it through.

I was watching, along with many millions of us.

Thanks for the clarification.

Comment by Tyrione | 2008-06-16 21:42:54

Will of the People is about The People, not delgates disproportionally distributed to pad the minority urban centers.

One vote, One voice.

Change the delegate totals to Winner-take-All Primary Only system.

You think Obama would have spent ten minutes in Idaho? Nebraska? New Mexico? Colorado? Maine? Iowa? New Hampshire?

Especially with the prospect of losing New York, California, Texas, Ohio, Florida and Pennsylvania?

Hell no.

Comment by Democrat | 2008-06-16 22:09:52

Winner take all isn’t more democratic. It does a worse job of mirroring popular preference.

And it’s not like the system was a surprise to the former First Lady, was it?

Comment by MessyMarcy | 2008-06-16 22:34:25

The system itself was not a surprise, but the fact that Obama turned out to be an even less ethical George W. Bush probably was. And the fact that Howard Dean and Donna Brazile would cheat and steal to hand the nomination to the unelectable and unqualified Obama was probably pretty surprising, too.

2. Undercover, forget the math and look at the political map most of the delegates Obama “won” in the primary were from states Obama has little chance of winning and the idea of banking his hopes on VA and Colorado two states Bush carried and the Republicans have little to no fear of losing is crazy. And the fact Republicans in Mississippi went out their way to help get out the vote for Obama shows me who they want to face.

Turnout among these groups helped explain the outcomes: Mainline Democrats accounted for only about 60 percent of voters in Montana’s open primary, vs. more than 80 percent in South Dakota’s closed contest; and college graduates were more prevalent in Montana by roughly a 10-point margin.

2)WAKEUP call!! DING DING DING!

“His upset win? He won 38% of the vote. That means that 62% of Iowans voted against him. And this was a caucus, not a real election. And in Virginia, the Democrats who have won lately (Kaine, Webb) are conservative tough guys, and Webb won by the narrowest of margins, largely due to the fact that George “macaca” Allen seriously went off the rails with his viral racist comments (And he still barely lost!!!!!!).” riverdaughter

You’re not still pushing that “majority of the pledged delegates” nonsense, are you? I understand why Barry is pushing it; he can’t get the majority of the voters, so he has to have excuse to claim that he has “the will of the people.”

Because the nomination is based on delegates.

Yes sweetie but the General Election is winner take all electoral votes.

By the way, did you know Obama’s Dad was an alcholic polygamist who was married when he impregnated Obama’s 17-year old Mom, Ann? He was 8 years older than her. I think that’s called statutory rape?

Yes sweetie but the Stanley Cup playoffs are based on regular-season performance.

This is too funny — an Obamabutt making a hockey analogy when his candidate can’t even bowl. Sweetie, Obama only “won” because some of the goals Hillary scored were stolen and given to him. And another thing, pookie, the Stanley Cup is awarded to the team that wins those playoffs. And McCain is Gordie Howe, and Obama is, well, his own little self.

Yes, it’s based on delegates. It is not based solely on pledged delegates. Are you so dense that you don’t understand the difference?

Formerly, Obama was saying that the supers should fo
