Excuses, Excuses

The Kool Aid is Potent

A round up of comments in Obamaland (Talking Points Memo and Crooks and Liars, I dare not tread the threads on the DailyKos, not enough disinfectant in California to delouse me later) on Senator Obama and FISA:

105 Democratic representatives voted for the bill. Obama doesn’t have the political capital to win this battle. It’s silly for him to make his last stand here when he’s fighting for the presidency–the larger war.

Because the Constitution is just a scrap of paper.

Let’s keep in mind that Senator Obama is a Constitutional lawyer, and calm down until we know exactly what we are talking about.

More like he lectured on Constitutional Law at the University of Chicago, I don’t think he ever practised in the field and he certainly isn’t practising in it now, but hope springs eternal.

People have to remember. Obama is the Junior Senator from Illinois who is getting a lot of press. Three weeks ago he wasn’t even the Party’s Nominee. He’s expressed his concern regarding the retroactive immunity (a poison pill the R’s have thrown into this) but as of right now he is NOT THE PRESIDENT. Maybe some people thought the election is already won but to be honest the guy doesn’t have the kind of political capital we’re ascribing to him here in the netroots. He’s got a WAR to win and I can see already that driving himself into a buzzsaw with his own party over this one issue will not win him the election. He needs to keep his eye on the prize and as others have stated not look weak grandstanding over something he can’t change anyway.

Apparently, an election matters more than the Constitution.

The O! is our shepherd.

Well, he certainly pulled the wool over your eyes.

He will fix it when he’s President.

And he’ll give us healthcare, solve our energy problems, and bring about world peace the moment he walks in the Oval Office just because he’s Obama, the messiah.

Here’s how it will go down:

Obama, Feingold and a bunch of others who oppose retroactive immunity will first move an amendment stripping that clause from the bill. There will be spirited debate, including a stirring speech by Obama on why retroactive absolution for illegal acts is bad. The amendment will then go to a vote and be soundly defeated. Pure theater; everyone knows it. Then, in debate on the main motion — the “compromise” as received from the House — Obama will either repeat what he said in today’s statement — that the bill is better than nothing — or he’ll stay silent. Feingold and a few others will refuse to cave, and vote no. Obama will vote yes. The bill will pass overwhelmingly. The netroots will sulk for a few days; the general public will hardly notice. Who’s going to make immunity an election issue? Certainly not McCain. Whereas if Obama votes no, he’ll be tarred as soft on terrorism.

That’s how the game is played. I’m disappointed, too; the constitution is a terrible thing to waste.

But I take some comfort that — despite everyone clamoring for him to take a position — Obama needed 24 hours of soul-searching before concluding he had to sell out. Face it, right now his Job 1 is getting elected president. Feingold can afford to take the high road; Obama has to do what it takes to win.

No, his job as United States Senator is to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States. That’s why they take an Oath:

I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter: So help me God.

The biggest mistake this country ever made was to stop requiring civic classes in high school. The Constitution, capital C there buddy (that mere fact should tell you something), a terrible thing to waste? Please get me a sedative before I collapse from the stupidity of that statement.

I suspect that most of Barack’s voters understand the difference between political necessity in the current climate vice a character flaw. I suspect most of us aren’t so childish that we would bite off our nose to spite our face.

I, for one, am not a single-issue person. There are larger things at stake than a couple of executives who shared some billing records. I am willing to give the guy the benefit of the doubt until elected.

The bar will be raised much higher at that point, but for now we have to be a little more expedient with our All or Nothing mentality. It doesn’t win elections and certainly doesn’t lead to governing majorities.

True, there are larger things at stake than a couple of executives who shared some billing records like upholding the law, the right against unreasonable search and seizures, and the Constitution. Politics is not just about issues, issues come and go. Politics, at its core is, about principles. Sacrifice those and what’s the point of politics?

Where does McCain stand on the constitution? Will McCain preserve the 4th admendment?

When all else fails, deflect the question.

To be fair, there are plenty of very upset and embittered Obamaphiles including many who now claim they can’t support him but there is still a potent kool-aid element out there.

A note to the non-US readership, the FISA bill is a retroactive immunity bill for telecommunication companies that may have violated 1978 FISA law that prescribes procedures for requesting judicial authorization for electronic surveillance and physical search of persons engaged in espionage or international terrorism against the United States on behalf of a foreign power. Here’s the background on FISA.

I’ve yet to see a president give up power willingly. That is the job of Congress to insist.

By nature, Presidents gather power. Congress balances that power off.

It is worse than “Naive”. I received a letter from “Act Blue”, another group sponsored by George Soros, today that wants to go after the Bush Democrats. They explain the “Bush Dems” voted for immunity for the telecom’s. Act Blue is a big backer of Obama. I had to write back - “Why aren’t you going after Obama?” I know Obama had to think it over for 24 hrs. It’s hard when there is no “PRESENT” Button. In case anyone would like to ask “Why?”, email info@actblue.com.

Why is that the pro-Obama folks see nothing wrong with doing what is politically expedient, i.e., voting for a bad FISA bill in order to avoid being painted as soft on terrorism?

I didn’t hear any of these rationalizations from this group when Clinton voted to give Bush the option of using military action against Iraq. She does it–it’s being weak or having bad judgement. He does something similiar and it’s “just the way politics works.”

It’s as if they can’t, or won’t, see past the lies, as it gets too difficult emotionally when they begin to understand someone they thought they trusted is in fact, simply another criminal POS, who used, and lied to them.

How do you get out of it?

They dont know, they aren’t ready to fight, it’s much easier to stay in denial, and pretend it’s business as usual.

And even if they’re hip to the trick, they’re in denial about what is really going on, most people aren’t as criminally empty as Obama, but they can’t confront the enormity of what is happening, even to minimize the damage to their structure.

The biggest mistake this country ever made was to stop requiring civic classes in high school.

They don’t require civics any longer? What is wrong with our education system? Oh yeah - ‘no child left behind’.

They also don’t have Drivers Ed any longer nor do they have very many ‘home ec’ style classes. So, the average American doesn’t know how to feed himself/herself properly and is putting a strain on our health care system. The average American these days (who got drivers licenses since the late 70’s) has never had true driving instruction, thus the idiots on the road with cell phones in one hand and a cigarette in the other, while driving 80 mph blowing fumes into the air from their SUV’s.

I feel worse about this country now than I did in November, 2004 and I didn’t think that was even possible.

florida dem — Yes — The biggest mistake this country ever made was to stop requiring civic classes in high school.

We have a nation of young people who are clueless about the Constitution and history. Obama wants an age war. This why why my former party doesn’t care about the problems of boomers. They have decided to screw us out of our Social Security and Medicare and will use the young voters to do it.

Obama will sell the youth on why war is necessary as he institutes a draft–at which time youth and age will be on the same side again. But it will be too late Obama will be in and it won’t matter what anyone thinks. PERPETUAL WAR FOR PERPETUAL PEACE and IGNORANCE IS BLISS doncha know. We so badly need them. FOR ADULTS!

~”We have a nation of young people who are clueless about the Constitution and history”~

You’ve got that right! When the Bush stuff started I was amazed at the number of people who though the president made the laws and Congress just passed a bill to OK them!

And now Obama followers are saying that Obama will get rid of all the “bad laws ” Bush “made” during the last 8 years. If, by some miraculous steal Obama manages to take possession of Our White House he will need Congress to help him out - that’s both parties in spite of that Presidential Seal - unless he has no plans to “preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

We need divided government. Only with checks and balances (Repub president with a Dem congress) will sanity return to our federal government. I shudder to think of what a president Obama and a rubber stamp congress will do to this nation.

Give me checks and balances. Please

However, it was right for him to vote no on capping interest rates on credit cards because the cap was too high. He takes a “stand” on not capping interest rates but votes for this because he has no “political capital”? Of course they can all demonize Hillary Clinton on her force authorization vote for Iraq, when she too had “no political capital”
Can they talk circles around themselves.

I am not sure that retro-active immunity will fly under a court challenge because it is an expo-facto law. Although that has never stopped anyone before.

Bill Clinton got in despite the roadblocks and they spent 8 years trying to destroy him. Now firmly back on track with another Bush and the road to ruin has been well paved.

But wait — a Messiah is coming and he may not have any experience but what the hell the USA is a ship of fools anyway so what does it matter. Obama looks good on a bike and he doesn’t believe in elections. Couldn’t be better — now they don’t even have to pretend to care about us.

No doubt these folks don’t pay attention to the real world.

Or did they close their eyes for his 2 years in the US Senate before announcing his run for the Presidency?

I mean really. If they didn’t look at his State of Illinois career, with his 130 missed votes….and W
AYYY too many missed votes on “womens issues”, his corrupt and hateful circle of whom he ran with, AT LEAST they should have paid attention to the campaign promises he ran on and the fact that he didn’t do that in his 2 short years in the Senate.

His two campaign themes were the injustices of the Patriot Act and the “dumb war” in Iraq.

So, what did Obama do when he got to the Senate in 2005? (Yes, I know, a too many who are voted for Obama actually thought he was in the Senate and voted against the Bill) He couldn’t wait for vote for that Reauthorization of the Patriot Act, and voted YES…..yup, YES. And he voted the 2 years constantly to fund and continue the Iraq War. He didn’t even vote YES on the one Bill brought to the floor by Kerry/Feingold to end the war within a year in June 2006.

I guess all they have is, “he’s new, he’ll gain experience with time” Not when someone has a habit of continuous mistake making AND, not for the jobs that they are supposed to HAVE THE EXPERIENCE FOR, BEFORE TAKING THE JOB.

What was New Orleans before Katrina?
Ray Nagen was a cable executive who became a Democrat to run as Mayor of New Orleans pre-Katrina.

What did Obama do for the people of New Orleans? How much money did he raise for Katrina relief? How many tears did he cry for the people of New Orleans? [a la Jesse Jackson III]
How did he do at the State of the Black Union meeting held in New Orleans AFTER he [Obama] won the Louisiana Primary?

Oh, that’s right. Everything I mentioned above would have to be answered in the negative because he didn’t do a damn thing. He didn’t give or raise any money and after he got the “black” vote he couldn’t have been bothered to talk to any black voters. Just like when he told Ed Rendell, “we don’t need the people, we just need their checks”; you can add votes to that as well! Once he has them, he couldn’t give a damn about the people who voted for him!

Remember when George Bush said to the elites at a fundraiser “…some people call you the elites, I like to call you my base.”
Well, we have another George Bush on our hands….

Comment by DeniseB | 2008-06-23 16:59:23

He’s been plotting his run for President since he first entered Chicago politics. Since Day One he’s been considering the long-term political consequences of everything he’s said & every vote he’s made.

Being prominent working for or speaking for black people wasn’t part of the strategy, for the same reason that mentioning him in the same sentence as Jesse Jackson was considered offensive - his plan was to downplay his race to the extent that he wouldn’t be associated with Katrina in any way.

It’s all fine and dandy that we sit at our computers and vent our frustrations out against Obama and those that enabled him to “Steal” this election.
But when it is time to ACT, will you stand up for what you believe? Will you put yourselves on the line and speak out? Will you reach out and grab that Constitution that we are so found of quoting and defend her? If so I applaud you.

Obama and Gaddafi
What a Pair

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2737QUBxFY
As we can clearly hear above, Muammar al-Gaddafi discusses the ‘importance’ of a Barack Hussein Obama Presidency to the Islamic ‘Ummah’, in contrast to what he terms “the Dictatorship and Imperialism of the United States”.

As we have already discussed on this BlogZine (read “The Little Left Book“), the ‘New Left’ ideology, which seems to be motivating, financing and energizing the Obama campaign, is a white washed brand of Maoist socialism, and ironically enough, it is very similar to the concept of “change” and “hope” which cemented Gaddafi’s rise to fame. The question then arises; is Gaddafi speaking about Obama on a random whim, or does he have a concrete connection to Barack Obama?

By the time Wright and Farrakhan visited, Libyan oil imports had been banned, and America was trying to topple what it called a “rogue regime.” In the several years after that, Farrakhan was pro-active for Qadhfi, even as Libya was internationally isolated for suspected involvement in numerous terror plots, including the explosion of Pan Am 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland.
Farrakhan’s and Wright’s 1984 visit and subsequent support was done precisely to openly ally themselves with a declared enemy of the United States. Why? Because these two American men of the clergy — Farrakhan and Wright — are avowed enemies of the United States.

Of course, Black Liberation Theology and it’s connection to Maoism/Leninism/Marxism is a well established fact.

Should the fact that Gaddafi knowledge of Obama’s religious and ethnic background seems a bit more advanced than most Americans really surprise us? Are we to assume that Rev. Wright and Gaddafi have not discussed the candidacy of Barack Hussein Obama throughout this process? Has Louis Farrakhan never discussed the immense possibilities that an Obama Presidency could bring for their respective ideologies? Or is Gaddafi simply responding to those “evil internet rumors” to which Obama makes reference on a daily basis?

The New York Times reported August 27, 1996 (h/t GS), that Farrakhan had applied to the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control for “permission” to accept a $1 billion “donation” pledged by Qaddafi during Farrakhan’s January 1996 trip to Libya, which had been under U.S. sanctions for years due to its “links to terrorism” that “bar most business transactions between the two countries and limit travel.”
To some people, all of these unwholesome links among Obama’s many strange friends may somehow seem ‘irrelevant’ or ‘inconsequential’, but to those of us who actually THINK, the dots are already connected, and what they outline is not a pretty picture.

Remember the good old days how BOBOweenies eviscerated Hillary when they rampaged around saying she would do anything to win? It seems the BOBOweenies are now all for doing any thing to win as long as it’s BOBO at the top of the ticket.

The BOBOweenies have officially gone over to the dark side and became all they fought against… just mere weeks ago.

For those who would enjoy it, Rebecka Traister has a discussion of PUMAS going on at Salon.com

What her analysis misses is why anyone would vote for such a corrupt, Chicago, unvetted, piece of work.

Strange omission.

Like brontosaurus poo in the room.

Lay on over there MacDuffs!

“I can see already that driving himself into a buzzsaw with his own party over this one issue will not win him the election. He needs to keep his eye on the prize and as others have stated not look weak grandstanding over something he can’t change anyway.”

Two things struck me about this sentence: First, the word “buzzsaw.” That is the exact word Hillary used to describe what it was like trying to launch Universal Health Care in the 90’s, and how naive Barack was/is about making “change” happen–as if you just wave a wand. She was ridiculed for “failing,” and making “politically expedient compromises.” Second, “don’t bother fighting for change if it’s going to you make you look weak grandstanding” and his lack of political capital (ie: like a junior Senator might have: You mean like Hillary’s vote for the authorization to go to war?

It seems that the Messiah is running into the real world, and how interesting that all these hostile purists are willing to cut him some slack and justify his reasoning, but crucifed Hillary for her political maneuvering. Of course, Hillary is consistent, and does not make 180-degree changes on Constitutional issues in a single week. Lord have mercy, if she did that she’d be run out of DC on a rail. It’s ok, because I can assure you, there’s going to be many more examples of Obambi’s lack of principle, because that’s who he is. No more “present” votes allowed. He’s going to have to make the tough decisions now, and you know how that goes: you can’t please everyone.

What I find interesting is the US has, in one form or another, been going around FISA for years. In the 80’s it was other “friendly” govs, ie Canada and the UK who would spy on US FOR the US, and the US for them.

All this talk about FISA being the “exclusive means” is BS. The talking points of BO and Pelosi, which were almost word for word identical, saying that this current bill is to “reafirm” that FISA IS the “exclusive means” is typical. I mean why do we need to pass a law to say that a law already on the books is the law on the books?

Our Constitutional rights …are what? If you read the Wiki on it, it has been edited to reflect that FISA is not subject to Constitutional Challenges. And that has been borne out because only one case out of many has been granted standing. The last thing dems want is to bring this “pelican brief” before the Surpremes and have it declared legally binding that the US Government can conduct Domestic survalliance without warrents. If the FISA coursts have been a “rubber stamp” then what is all the fuss about?

Retro- immunity / Ex post facto law-

Finally, Calder v. Bull expressly stated that a law that “mollifies” a criminal act was merely retrospective and not an ex post facto law. The current debate over granting telecoms retroactive immunity for their part in warrantless wiretapping is one that does not invoke the ex post facto clause in the U.S. Constitution.

We will never know the answer to this if no one can gain standing in a court.

I guess this is why he eliminated the shield on the eagle on his own “presidential” seal. He clearly has no interest in defending the constitution.

Or himself, that’s what I saw, he removed the shield that protected HIM.

I saw the eagle as a cartoon car, the constitution also protecting Obama, the cartoon car.

THAT eagle, on Obama’s seal, is not America, it is Obama.

If he can change the Seal then the next thing you know if he should be President he will change the name of the White House to MY House the Majic Bus.

You know, I can find Michelle Obama’s college thesis everywhere, but I can’t find any reference to Baracks.

Did Barack Obama write a thesis, and if so where can we get a copy? Anyone know what the topic was?

The biggest mistake this country ever made was to stop requiring civic classes in high school.

What on earth ARE they studying?

I had to take 4 years of English in HS, 4 years of math, 4 years of social studies, 3 years of one foreign language, a year each of biology, chemistry and physics. If I remember this correctly, all this was required to get an academic diploma in New York State, without which you couldn’t go to college. Also 4 years of gym (for no credit) & a course in health. There was plenty of time given to civics in social studies - in addition to history, geography and a little anthropology and political science.

I suppose this varies from state to state, but what are kids required to take now? What are they spending so much time on that they can’t include civics?

Wow, the hyporcrisy reeks. Hillary was crucified for her one vote, and Obama gets a free pass to “fix it later”? Now not only is BO credited with “good judgment”, he has superhuman judgment so that he can see into the future and know with certainty he can fix the problem caused by his not so good judgment in the present. It’s the same old excuse his fanatics have made up for every scandals since Wright. Whatever BO is selling, it’s nothing good. Hope will lead you down a shithole. Change will flush you down the toilet.
