Following up on previous posts, here and here, that have raised questions about the authenticity of Barack Obama’s “birth certificate,” I became more curious about Barack’s mother, Stanley Ann Dunham (known as “Ann”), and spent several hours reading about her. In particular, I was searching for information about the circumstances surrounding Barack’s birth.
It seems reasonable to ask at this point: Is it possible that Barack Obama, Ann’s son, was born someplace besides Honolulu?
Here’s a rough sketch of the timeline I’ve pieced together so far based on information available on the Internet, but I could use some help filling in the blanks. Questions are presented at the end.
Spring/Summer 1960 – Ann Dunham, at the age of 17, moves with her parents from Mercer Island, Washington following her high school graduation, to Honolulu Hawaii, where her father, Stanley, has a new sales job in a furniture store.
Fall 1960– Ann starts classes at the Univ. of Hawaii’s East West Centre, a well known center of leftist thought, and shortly thereafter meets Barack Obama Sr., a Kenyan student, in a Russian language class.
Oct/Nov. 1960– Barack Obama Jr. is conceived.
Dec. 1960/Jan. 1961– Ann, now 18 years old, and Obama announce to their families plans to marry. Both the Dunham and Obama parents are unhappy with the news. By this time Ann’s mother Madelyn Dunham has become vice president of the Bank of Hawaii in Honolulu.
Feb. 1961– Ann reportedly marries Obama Sr., but it’s unclear where this took place, who was present, and whether the marriage is documented.
Aug. 4 1961– Ann gives birth to Barack Obama Jr.
Late Aug. 1961– Ann visits high school friends on Mercer Island with newly born baby Barack.
My QUESTIONS at this time focus on the circumstances surrounding Barack’s birth:
1. Where did Ann Dunham live while she was pregnant with Barack, especially the 6 months from Feb. to Aug. 1961? Reportedly her parents were embarrassed and upset about her pregnancy. Obama Sr. was reportedly living in a dorm at the time.
2. Where did Ann deliver Barack? His “birth certificate” doesn’t say, and I guess he’s lost the original? (Although, it’s very interesting to note that Obama provides details of his birth weight in Dreams From My Father — where did that info come from?) Wikipedia and other sources say that Barack was born at Kapiolani Medical Center in Honolulu, but are there any records of this?
3. Why does Barack’s “certification of birth” say “Date Filed” at the bottom, when the other Honolulu birth certificate on the same form that we found says “Date Accepted”? (See them both here.)
4. Is it possible that Barack was born someplace outside Honolulu, perhaps someplace outside the country (maybe someplace closer than Kenya), and that Ann applied for a “late arrival” birth certificate after-the-fact, which the State of Hawaii apparently allows under certain circumstances?
5. Is it possible that leftist/Marxist foreign friends of Ann’s at the Univ. of Hawaii referred her to a location outside the US to complete her pregnancy and deliver her baby?
(Fascinating side-note: Ann became a serious student of Communist and Marxist theories back in high school thanks to some radical teachers and administrators at Mercer High).
6. Did Ann drop out of the University when she was pregnant? If so, for how long?
7. Does the fact that Ann was a minor when Barack was conceived relate to these events? What was the legal age for getting married in Hawaii in 1961?
8. Who was with Ann at the time she delivered Barack? Parents, Obama Sr., both?
9. Why did Ann travel to Mercer Island with her newborn, and did Obama Sr. or her mother accompany her?
10. Why hasn’t the Obama campaign made Ann’s mother (and Barack’s grandmother), Madelyn Dunham (now 84), available? Don’t presidential candidates at least minimally introduce immediate relatives to the general public? It seems that Obama is treating his grandmother like a big mystery.
11. Why did Barack Obama make a big to-do about, and act as CO-SPONSOR for, legislation in early 08 that was introduced by his supporter Claire McCaskill resolving questions about McCain’s eligibility to be President? Is it true (as a reader commented) that “the bill that Obama wanted didn’t have the military part in it” — meaning that Obama favored a law that would allow any citizen born outside the US to be eligible for POTUS? Why did McCaskill, rather than a Republican, introduce this legislation?
NOTE: Some readers are confused. Citizenship is NOT the issue here (although some have suggested that Obama has dual citizenship). The issue here is eligibility to be President based on the constitutional requirement that the President be natural-born. In passing the legislation allowing children of the military born outside the US to be eligible, Congress has made an exception to the rule for John McCain’s benefit, but would it be constitutional for Congress to pass a law doing away with the natural-born reqirement all together?
Information provided in the timeline is compiled from dozens of on-line sources and reader comments. The author has not personally verified the information, and will attempt to update this post with corrections as they are confirmed.

Actually I have some problems with your facts. At the very least you should have found that Barack’s mother died several years ago - hence she is unavailable for comment. Also I understand that his grandmother refuses to talk to the media, as is her right. She is supposedly not in good health. Also I have never read that she was a bank president. She was a vice president at the Bank of Hawaii. Was she a bank president somewhere else before?
The question I want answered is when and for how long was Barack’s mother on food stamps. This seems mighty odd to me since her parents were clearly affluent by that time. (If I see that ad about Barack’s family’s humble origins and Kansas values one more time I will scream. What a scam.)
No one asked if the mother was available for comment.

I read it long time ago (2000?) that Americans born on a military base were considered ‘natural born citizens’, and so I don’t think her ‘cute’ bill was needed by John McCain (you’d think otherwise, the republicans would have addressed it one way or another in 8 years.) But since the media is getting dumber and dumber, she (and Obama) looked good doing it!! Perhaps, they wanted cover for when they slip their own version!!

According to Barry, he was attending prep school at the time his mother was on “food stamps” and this confused him. Laughing here. In any event, if he was attending the prep school he selected under his grandmother’s umbrella in Hawaii, I hardly think he himself was living off of food stamps, do you?
According to him, his mother was getting food stamps while she was getting her phd, although it’s kind of hard to imagine that her parents were letting her starve either. If she indeed even WAS on food stamps, she may have just taken advantage of her “eligibility”. And yes, his grandmother was the VP of the Bank Of Hawaii.

Ann Dunham returned to school to get her master’s in 1972. Not her Ph.D. Her Ph.D. was obtained from the University of Hawaii in 1992. That would make Obama 30-31 years old at the time. Why would she be getting food stamps for a child 30 years old? And don’t most Ph.D. students find a stipend to help them with their expenses?
How dumb does Obama think the American people are that we cannot check what he says?

NOPE. At private universities anyway, many students are not given a dime (except for loans). Part of the reason that a significant number of Ph.D. students (especially those of working class origins) never finish the degree…Having to deal with full-time (or close to it) work and a full-time course load is no joke. It’ll drain the student emotionally and intellectually. For those students without a trust fund, it happens time and again, unfortunately.
In any case, last time I checked (figure of speech!!!) a student receiving federal financial aid does not qualify for food stamps. So, either Ann D. was not receiving any student loans or grants from the govt, thus she qualified for food stamps; or O’Barky is lying about his supposedly destitute mother (likely); or Ann D. found some way to game the system somehow — I’ll giver HER and only her the benefit of the doubt on this one, especially since O’barky seems to intensely resent his mother….
BOBO’s grandma was a banker. My guess is that if Grandma and grandpa could afford BOBO’s ritzy Hawaiian prep school when he was ten. MOM’s didn’t want for much when she was in school getting her advanced degree.
Wildchild, if Ann’s parents were affluent she would not have qualified for financial aid, whether she was receiving support from them or not. Given the choices she made vis-a-vis Barack Sr., getting pregnant out of wedlock, etc., my guess is she wasn’t exactly being showered with money from Mom and Pop. She may have been kept from starving, and her time on food stamps may have been her way of starting to get away from her disapproving parents. My point to all of this is that none of us were there, none of us know the whole story, and this type of speculation is petty, distracting, and small-minded.

I too noticed the ‘birthweight’ thing. Obama surely has a bad memory when it comes to the most simple facts about his family: His relative (grandfather? Uncle?) who (heard of, thought of, participated in) the liberation of Dachau or Auschwitz or another concentration camp. The Selma thing where he claims he was born after his mother and father participated? Ummm…4 years later? I also recently saw a clip where he’d mentioned he became fluent in ‘indonesian’ when living there, but his teachers say otherwise. Even worse, he said that Kennedy “airlifted” the students out of Kenya, as if it were a military rescue mission.
But note: ALL the Bobby Kennedy clan were for Hillary. It was the media pushing the Camelot thing, when they could’ve just as easily pointed out that the Kennedy family, like all the Dems, were split on the candidates.
Three of Bobby’s kids were for Hillary, the rest, including Ethel, were for Obama. Ethel recently opened her home in Virginia for a $28M+ per head fundraiser for Obama. Hm. Well, my mother told me as a kid what my birthweight was (9 pounds 15 ounces), and I remembered it from that. I don’t remember seeing a copy of my birth certificate until I was 15 and getting my learner’s permit, and I didn’t look at the birth weight section. I’m 43, and I couldn’t tell you where the birth weight section on my birth certificate is–I just remember that it’s on green paper…

Are there any Hawaiian genealogists around here? A trip to the State Library/Archives is worth a look. Even if you’re not into genealogy, the staff will steer you to the section you need. In the genealogy room, they will have a section that contains large volumes for all births and deaths.
If I remember correctly, the volumes in Texas are by year. I looked up all my families births this way. They record the file/certificate number, full name of the child, date of birth and the name of the father. I can’t remember if the name of the mother is listed or not.

There were no questions about their birth to require this.
The original certificate should be on file at the State Health Dept, Bureau of Vital Statistics, or similar department in Hawaii.
Those agencies will not give out any info on a living person due to privacy laws. The only way to know for sure if there really is a certificate of birth on file is to look through the birth volumes at the state genealogy library.
The kind of “privacy law” that should not apply to a presidential candidates.
It seems hardly likely that a presidential candidate would be protected by privacy law. If the person is not born in the U. S. they cannot be president. If no one can check the birth records, then how can it be determined whether or not the person was born here? Anyone could run and claim to be natural, no one would ever know. Can’t be right.

Generally speaking you have to substantiate a personal connection to the person in question to be able to order and receive these kinds of records, in the original format.
However, there is certainly some caveat or exception made to this kind of privacy when a person is a “public figure” and if there way anyone who wanted to achieve “public figure” status, it is BO. However, the state agency may still refuse based on the fact that they don’t want to be open to the kind of aggresive criticism and attacks from the Obama folks that they now must know would come.
Also, it is my guess that long ago - several months back to several years of time - everyone who could confirm (from an agency) in Hawaii has been threatened or bought off. But because that was perhaps as long ago as I think it was, they may be amenable to being bought off again to produce the document.
The Obama folks have made a complete mess of this by releasing a document that is (or appears to be) a fraudulent one. Anybody call the FBI yet? It would be a crime to use a fraudulent document in this situation.
Yep. The Trib got Jack Ryan’s (candidate for Sen against Obama in ‘04) divorce records unsealed because the CA judge said it was in the public’s interest to do so. The divorce records were sealed by an agreement from both Jack Ryan and his wife. Neither one of them wanted the records to become public, but a judge said the public had a right to know.
If the public has a right to know details of a messy divorce, then they have the right to see an original copy of a presidential candidate’s birth certificate.
My guess is that is why they blacked out the number - assuming no one would go to the trouble of going through the volumes of births for that time period. They didn’t want to make it easy for someone to do the research.
Unfortunately, I’m as far as I can possibly be from Honolulu or I’d do it myself.
The certificate # was blocked out by a graphics program (not by hand) when the fake document was created.
My guess is the reason it was blocked out:
1. They didn’t even KNOW the certificate # , so let’s just “block it out” to make it look genuine.
2. If they did know it, they don’t want to make it any easier for someone to investigate the original.
Besides that, there is NO REASON, privacy-wise, to have to block out that number. That is one of the biggest reasons you know the document is a fake.
You raise intersting questions that deserve answers.
I am really beginning to believe the Reps are just waiting.
Once BO has completed his bamboozle and gotten the nomination thus assuring that it is He who will lose, all this stuff will come out.

The “Pendulum Effect” of our nations policies has been ongoing for all of our history. We swing to the left after wars, toward the right when we are in one and it has always been thus with the result being that the tip point requires usually very little to swing things one way or another.
With Obama intentionally trying to swing things one way and then jam the political mechanism all the way to the left,
the resultant “correction” must be watched closely to avoid over-correction, or a swing too far to the right in an attempt to cure the malfunction.
Republicans really need to temper their upcoming response lest they alienate the “PUMAcrats” (a possible new name for those of us fighting BO.)
And the truth will set them free. Free from rumor and conjecture about there being something wrong with the circumstances of Obama’s birth.
As the Obama campaign is reputed to be so smart why are they letting this fester? Produce a birth certificate, a valid one, answer the questions and “poof” rumor and conjecture go away.

In Dreams from my Father, Senator Obama mentions his birth certificate … somewhere in the first three chapters of the book (can’t recall exactly, but he refers to it being kept with some other items/documents). Regardless of whether or not he has the original, I believe a full and complete copy would be available from the applicable vital records department.

Obama has only made mention of his Kenyan relatives once and that was in a victory speech he gave early on where he mentioned one sitting in a hut watching TV. He is quick to try to make his links to the “white” community known when it is politically expedient, however, for a person who wrote a book trying to find his “blackness” he sure is wont to connect himself to his African roots.
I also thought in reading the constitutional requirements for being a US president it states born to US citizen parentS. Not singular “parent” but plural “parents.”
I have no idea about the laws governing this issue as there are sites which seem to make valid cases for both sides of the argument.
I’ve seen it stated by supposed experts:
If he was born on US soil he is a natural born citizen, period. his parents origin is moot.
If he was not born in Hawaii or one of the other (57) states or american territories such as bases, then he is NOT legally eligible to become POTUS.
Where is the proof of his birth? Not a forgery like this POS fake document.
“Natural born” is generally accepted to mean that you are a citizen by birth, i.e., not naturalized, regardless of where you are born.
