What have you done for me lately?

Barack Obama has put out a new ad touting his legislative achievements. A good thing it is one of those 30 second ads. Otherwise he would have to fill it with lies like he did his first.

Strangely, Obama has decided to come clean (almost) on this ad. He removed the reference to passing a law to extend health care to wounded veterans. You know, that inartful statement LIE that he told on his first ad because Obama didn’t even vote for the legislation. Whoops!

Ironically the title of this new ad is Dignity. I suppose that Obama finally coming clean after blatantly lying in his first general election ad is considered being dignified by the Obama folk. I think it would have been more appropriately titled: Fessing Up.

So we get to the meat of this ad and lo and behold what do we learn? The troubling fact that of all of the legislative accomplishments he claims, not a single one of them has occurred since he became a US Senator. Get that? He hasn’t accomplished a single thing of note since becoming a US Senator.

Not. A. Single. Thing.

I suppose he has been too busy running for president to have actually accomplished something. Of course Obama probably considers all those speeches he is giving as legislative accomplishments. On the other hand, not accomplishing anything leaves one devoid of any record that can be criticized. It allows Obama to take every side of an issue. A politico du jour, so to speak. And he has definitely accomplished that.

So let’s see just how “dignified” Obama’s new ad is. Shall we?

The ad touts his leadership when he passed a law that moved people from welfare to work. It goes on to state that his leadership slashed the welfare rolls by 80 percent. Now here is where the trouble starts. Barky took credit for enforcing a federal law that he admitted he wouldn’t have supported to begin with. His exact words were:

Illinois Senate Transcript

I probably would not have supported the federal legislation, because I think it has some problems. But I’m a strong believer in making lemonade out of lemons.

But sour puss Obama has no problem taking credit for something he claims to oppose. Hell, his new ad makes it seem like it was his idea to begin with. So much for dignity.

Obama also claims to have passed tax cuts for workers. Only trouble is that Obama was one of 43 co-sponsors of the legislation. And the record for Illinois Public Act 91-0700 contains no references to his active participation in either crafting the bill or arguing for it’s passage in any other way than voting for it. But geez he sure was Dignified actually taking the time out from his busy schedule to vote.

And just when you had lost hope that Obama had no real legislative achievements his new ad actually provides proof that he did something of value. In Illinois. During the 8 years he spent in the Illinois Senate. When he actually had the time to accomplish something. Because he wasn’t running for president. Yes, a single accomplishment. Woo Hoo!

Obama claims that he passed health care for kids and wouldn’t ya know it, he really did. He was the sponsor of Public Act 93-0063 and it really passed and it really did help children gain health care. And I commend him for doing this. It’s dignified and the right thing to do.

So kudos to you Senator Obama. I knew that if people dug deep enough they might find a single thing you actually did that actually helped anyone. Hell, Richard Nixon “passed” the EPA so I knew there was some good in you down deep somewhere. It took a lot of digging though.

Now you can brief your surrogates what to say the next time they are asked about your legislative achievements. Is that sweet or what? Just make sure that they give brief interviews.

But this begs the question Senator Obama. With of all the “accomplishments” you claim to have and all the superior judgment you claim to possess just why is it that you haven’t accomplished a single thing of note since becoming a US Senator?

Could it be that you haven’t been a US Senator long enough to actually do something. It took eight years to accomplish something in Illinois so maybe you are a slow achiever?

I’ll tell ya what. How about you spend 8 years in the US Senate? And maybe by then you will have actually accomplished something that is dignified. Really dignified. No questions asked dignified.

After that maybe we can talk.

But Until Then: What have you done for me lately?

Actually, Pagan Power, you are too generous in your assessment of Barky’s legislative prowess. Media Matters offers this with regard to his “expansion” of the CHIP program.

In 2003, Obama sponsored a bill that expanded eligibility for KidCare and FamilyCare by amending “the Children’s Health Insurance Program Act to provide that a child with a household income of 200%, rather than 185%, of the federal poverty level is eligible to participate in the Program.” The House version of the bill was sponsored by state Rep. Sandra Pihos, a Republican. On July 1, 2003, Illinois Gov. Ron Blagojevich (D) signed the bill into law. During both his 2004 U.S. Senate campaign and his current presidential campaign, Obama has repeatedly highlighted his sponsorship of the bill, often saying that he “expanded health care to 150,000 children and their parents in Illinois.” According to enrollment statistics provided by the Kaiser Foundation, the two programs expanded enrollment by more than 150,000. From a September 25, 2007, analysis of a recent Obama campaign advertisement by PolitiFact, a project of the St. Petersburg Times and Congressional Quarterly:

In an ad making the case for Barack Obama as a political candidate who can bring people together, an announcer says Obama “won health care for 150,000 people.”

[...]

So did he?

The statement is based on a 2003 law Obama sponsored when he was an Illinois state senator. His bill expanded income eligibility for KidCare and FamilyCare, the state health insurance programs for low-income families. Gov. Ron Blagojevich, a Democrat, signed the bill on July 1, 2003.

[...]

After the new law passed, both programs saw sizable increases in enrollment. Children’s enrollment increased by 55,421 between 2003 and 2005, according to a study from the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation. Adult enrollment increased by 100,458 between 2003 and 2006. That comes to a total of 155,879. So after Obama’s legislation passed, more than 150,000 people did

A forward received today!

“From the time Barack Obama was sworn in as a United State Senator, to the time he announced he was forming a Presidential exploratory committee, he logged 143 days of experience in the Senate. That’s how many days the Senate was actually in session and working.
After 143 days of work experience, Obama believed he was ready to be Commander In Chief, Leader of the Free World, and fill the shoes of Abraham Lincoln, FDR, JFK and Ronald Reagan. 143 days — I keep leftovers in my refrigerator longer than that.”

LOL at “slow achiever.” From what I have read, Obama sat in the Illinois legislature for 7 of the 8 years doing nothing…nada. Once Emil Jones decided Obama was the “next president”, he started handing Obama bills that others had worked on to give Obama some substance. This did not sit well with the peeps who actually worked on the bills, but they really didn’t buck the system. Obama was not well respected by his colleagues for this reason. I have to disagree with the crap talk about Obama having to work so hard for everything he got. He has just been one of those guys that has been “moved to the head of the class” all in the name of politics.

Comment by LDW | 2008-07-02 17:47:19

Obama was named Chairman of the Health and Human Services Committee in 1997(8?) but Public Act 91-0700, which was the bill resulting from this committee, only moved through the legislature in 2003, after Emil Jones Jr. began aggresively putting Obama’s name on legislation, and arm-twisting to get Obama’s legislative record all shined up for his federal senatorial campaign.

Remember Obama saying this:

Sen. Obama has been downplaying the Iran threat, saying that they are just “a small country,” not like the Soviet Union.

Well now Obama’s senior foreign policy adviser Anthony Lake said in an interview:

“The most dangerous crisis we are going to face potentially in the next three to 10 years is if the Iranians get on the edge of developing a nuclear weapon,”

Now there is change we can believe in.

I can add a few more:-

The Secure America and Orderly Immigration Act
Introduced by Sen. John McCain in May 2005, and cosponsored by Sen. Edward Kennedy. Barack Obama added three amendments to this bill.

While the bill was never voted on in the Senate, the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Acts of 2006 and 2007, respectively, drew heavily upon the wording of this bill.

The Lugar-Obama Cooperative Threat Reduction.
Introduced by Sen. Barack Obama, Sen. Dick Lugar and Sen. Tom Coburn.

First introduced in November 2005 and enacted in 2007, this bill expanded upon the successful Nunn-Lugar threat reduction, which helped secure weapons of mass destruction and related infrastructure in former Soviet Union states.

Lugar-Obama expanded this nonproliferation program to conventional weapons — including shoulder-fired rockets and land mines. When the bill received $48 million in funding, Obama said, “This funding will further strengthen our ability to detect and intercept illegal shipments of weapons and materials of mass destruction, enhancing efforts to prevent nuclear terrorism.”

Federal Funding Accountability and Transparency Act of 2006
This act of Congress, introduced by Senators Obama and Coburn, required the full disclosure of all entities or organizations receiving federal funds in FY2007.

Despite a “secret hold” on this bill by Senators Ted Stevens and Robert Byrd, the act passed into law and was signed by President Bush. The act had 43 cosponsors, including John McCain.

The act created this Web site, which provides citizens with valuable information about government-funded programs.

Democratic Republic of the Congo Relief, Security, and Democracy Promotion Act

This law helped specify US policy toward the Congo, and states that the US should work with other donor nations to increase international contributions to the African nation.

The bill marked the first federal legislation to be enacted with Obama as its primary sponsor. Following this legislation’s passage, Obama toured Africa, traveling to South Africa, Kenya, Djibouti, Ethiopia and Chad. He spoke forcefully against ethnic rivalries and political corruption in Kenya.

Honest Leadership and Open Government Act
In the first month of the 110th Congress, Obama worked with Sen. Russ Feingold to pass this law, which amends and strengthens the Lobbying Disclosure Act of 1995.

Specificially, the changes made by Obama and Feingold requires public disclosure of lobbying activity and funding, places more restrictions on gifts for members of Congress and their staff, and provides for mandatory disclosure of earmarks in expenditure bills.

The House passed the bill, 411-8, on July 31. The Senate approved it, 83-14, on Aug. 2. At the time, Obama called it “the most sweeping ethics reform since Watergate.”

Deceptive Practices and Voter Intimidation Prevention Act

Following the Republican-sponsored voter intimidation tactics seen in mostly black counties in Maryland during the 2006 midterm elections, Obama worked with Sen. Chuck Schumer to introduce this bill.

The bill has been referred to the United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary. Obama said of the bill, “This legislation would ensure that for the first time, these incidents are fully investigated and that those found guilty are punished.”

The Obama-McCain Climate Change Reduction Bill

The Obama-McCain bill, which is co-sponsored by Sen. Joe Lieberman, I-Conn., would cut emissions by two-thirds by 2050.

Iraq War De-Escalation Act of 2007

Introduced by Obama, this binding act would stop the planned troop increase of 21,500 in Iraq, and would also begin a phased redeployment of troops from Iraq with the goal of removing all combat forces by March 31, 2008.

Explaining the bill, Obama said it reflects his view that the problems in Iraq do not have a military solution. “Our troops have performed brilliantly in Iraq, but no amount of American soldiers can solve the political differences at the heart of somebody else’s civil war,” Obama said.

Amendments to the 2008 Defense Authorization Bill

Obama worked with Sen. Kit Bond to limit, through this bill, the Pentagon’s use of personality disorder discharges in the FY 2008 Defense Authorization bill.

This provision would add additional safeguards to discharge procedures and require a thorough review by the Government Accountability Office. This followed news reports that the Pentagon inappropriately used these procedures to discharge service members with service-connected psychological injuries.

“With thousands of American service members suffering day in and day out from the less visible wounds of war, reports that the Pentagon has improperly diagnosed and discharged service members with personality disorders are deeply disturbing,” said Senator Obama. “This provision will add additional safeguards to the Department of Defense’s use of this discharge and mandate a comprehensive review of these policies.”

The Comprehensive Nuclear Threat Reduction provision

Working with Sen. Hagel and Rep. Adam Schiff, Obama authored this provision, which would require the president to develop a comprehensive plan for ensuring that all nuclear weapons and weapons-usable material at vulnerable sites around the world are secure by 2012 from the threats that terrorists have shown they can pose.

A provision from the Obama-Hagel bill was passed by Congress in December 2007 as an amendment to the State-Foreign Operations appropriations bill.

“It is imperative that we build and sustain a truly global effort under an aggressive timeline to secure, consolidate, and reduce stockpiles of nuclear weapons and weapons-usable material to keep them out of the wrong hands. The comprehensive nuclear threat reduction plan required by this provision is an important step in that effort,” Obama said of the provision.

Finally, an Obama supporter who did some research. Great. You must be able to clarify.
Please explain Sen. Obama’s yes vote on the Cheney energy bill.
Also, has Sen O ever done anything to get to bottom of those ever so secret Cheney Energy meetings? Those Cheney planning sessions where we at least know Ken Lay made an appearance. Now, that would have said something. … No, he didn’t?
Has the Junior Sen. flipped back on FISA yet? Which way is that wind a blowin?
Please. This candidacy was scripted from the get go.
Right down to the coronation on the MLK anniversary. That will jive with the phony UNITY thing and the phony Independence, MO speech coming up.
It is Howard’s dream campaign…. the one he “yah heed” away 4 years ago…
or perhaps it’s the revived dream of John Kerry and his retaliation for those Swift boaters…or maybe it’s …nevermind. A waste of two finger typing.

Comment by UKforDems | 2008-07-02 19:51:07

He is not the only Democrat to “hold the feet to the fire” on FISA and I doubt Hillary would have done any different. One thing may shock you lot - I agree with you about Pelosi. Her failure to move on impeachment is a snub to the hundreds of thousands of Iraqis, the 4000 US Soldiers and the 1000 UK Soldiers who died in a needless war. A war that has resulted in us losing Afghanistan - a war with a point.

FISA is constitutionally wrong and a bad legal precedent not just for the US but for the World. So I fully back Feingold attempting to filibuster and if Mr Johnson wants to back security then he should be encouraging Feingold on this. (Will there be a positive blog on this site?)

What is not needed is another Repubican President who will continue this fake and dangerous abuse of civil liberties, enthusiastically copied here, on the basis of some false terrorist fear.

Comment by UKforDems | 2008-07-02 19:55:47

February 6, 2006

The Honorable Barack Obama
United States Senate
SH-713
Washington, DC 20510

Dear Senator Obama:

I would like to apologize to you for assuming that your private assurances to me regarding your desire to cooperate in our efforts to negotiate bipartisan lobbying reform legislation were sincere. When you approached me and insisted that despite your leadership’s preference to use the issue to gain a political advantage in the 2006 elections, you were personally committed to achieving a result that would reflect credit on the entire Senate and offer the country a better example of political leadership, I concluded your professed concern for the institution and the public interest was genuine and admirable. Thank you for disabusing me of such notions with your letter to me dated February 2, 2006, which explained your decision to withdraw from our bipartisan discussions. I’m embarrassed to admit that after all these years in politics I failed to interpret your previous assurances as typical rhetorical gloss routinely used in politics to make self-interested partisan posturing appear more noble. Again, sorry for the confusion, but please be assured I won’t make the same mistake again.

As you know, the Majority Leader has asked Chairman Collins to hold hearings and mark up a bill for floor consideration in early March. I fully support such timely action and I am confident that, together with Senator Lieberman, the Committee on Governmental Affairs will report out a meaningful, bipartisan bill.

You commented in your letter about my “interest in creating a task force to further study” this issue, as if to suggest I support delaying the consideration of much-needed reforms rather than allowing the committees of jurisdiction to hold hearings on the matter. Nothing could be further from the truth. The timely findings of a bipartisan working group could be very helpful to the committee in formulating legislation that will be reported to the full Senate. Since you are new to the Senate, you may not be aware of the fact that I have always supported fully the regular committee and legislative process in the Senate, and routinely urge Committee Chairmen to hold hearings on important issues. In fact, I urged Senator Collins to schedule a hearing upon the Senate’s return in January.

Furthermore, I have consistently maintained that any lobbying reform proposal be bipartisan. The bill Senators Joe Lieberman and Bill Nelson and I have introduced is evidence of that commitment as is my insistence that members of both parties be included in meetings to develop the legislation that will ultimately be considered on the Senate floor. As I explained in a recent letter to Senator Reid, and have publicly said many times, the American people do not see this as just a Republican problem or just a Democratic problem. They see it as yet another run-of-the-mill Washington scandal, and they expect it will generate just another round of partisan gamesmanship and posturing. Senator Lieberman and I, and many other members of this body, hope to exceed the public’s low expectations. We view this as an opportunity to bring transparency and accountability to the Congress, and, most importantly, to show the public that both parties will work together to address our failings.

As I noted, I initially believed you shared that goal. But I understand how important the opportunity to lead your party’s effort to exploit this issue must seem to a freshman Senator, and I hold no hard feelings over your earlier disingenuousness. Again, I have been around long enough to appreciate that in politics the public interest isn’t always a priority for every one of us. Good luck to you, Senator.

Sincerely,

John McCain
United States Senate

by Dinesh D’Souza

Now that Barack Obama has pretty much wrapped up the nomination, it’s time to raise a question that lots of people have been talking about privately but not publicly. Is it possible that Michelle Obama is the force behind Barack Obama’s refusal to embrace traditional patriotic symbols? Could Obama’s wife be largely responsible for the candidate’s damaging associations with crackpot race-baiters like the Reverend Jeremiah Wright and the Reverend Michael Pfleger? In sum, could Obama’s wife be a large part of his political problem?
One might expect that the reaction of someone who gets so many privileges to be grateful to a society that makes them possible. But no. Michelle Obama thinks that her very success is an example of white oppression.

Obama calls on Americans to enlist

By Rick Maze - Staff writer

COLORODO SPRINGS, Colo. — Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama included a pitch to enlist in the military in a speech here Wednesday about the need for Americans to be volunteers in all walks of life.

Speaking before an audience that included military veterans, families of current service members and at least one military officer in uniform, Obama said Americans expected a call to serve after the 9/11 terrorist attacks “but the call never came.”

Obama said he has met thousands of people who joined the military after 9/11, but the burden of serving the U.S. “has fallen exclusively … on the backs of people in the military and their families, even though they have not received the care and support they deserve.”

Part of Obama’s national security plan calls for a 65,000-person increase in the Army and a 27,000 increase in the Marine Corps.

“We need to ease the burden on our troops while meeting the challenges of the 21st Century,” he said. “That is why I will call on a new generation of Americans to join our military.”

But, in a related call that might diminish the number of people headed to military recruiters, Obama also said he wanted to increase the size of AmeriCorps, the program for domestic national service, to 250,000 people — a proposal that drew more applause than his call for military recruits from the audience at the campus of the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs. AmeriCorps has just 75,000 slots for volunteers today.

Obama also said that as president, he would try to ease the burden of military service, with his boost in personnel levels a key part of that plan.

“There is no challenge greater than the defense of our nation and our values,” he said.

“A call to service must be backed by a sacred trust with anyone who puts on the uniform of the United States,” he said. “A young person joining our military must know that we will only send them into harm’s way when we absolutely must,” he said.

Obama pledged that “we will provide them with the equipment needed to complete their mission safely, and deployments that allow adequate time back home. They must see that we will care for our military families while they are deployed and that we are providing our veterans with the support, benefits and opportunity that they have earned when they return home.”

$341.4 million a day on the War in Iraq. McCain would continue it.

Bush has doubled the national debt in 7 1/2 years, running up more debt than all previous presidential administrations combined. McCain has no plan to fix this. Instead, he would make the Bush tax cuts to the wealthy permanent.

Who’s free and easy with our money?

Comment by Inky | 2008-07-02 19:55:48

Do you honestly think that Obama is going to end the occupation in Iraq? If you do, you have absolutely no basis for that belief. Hell, he’s not even planning to withdraw those pricy Blackwater troops any time soon. And he’s even more bellicose than McCain is about Afghanistan — insisting that we can actually finish that job and win the war on terror over there.

I’m sorry, but if you’re looking for a peace dividend, you’re not going to get one with Obama as president.

Who approved that? How did Obama vote on all of that?

Yes, damn it why does Barack Obama keep voting to fund the Iraq war with our tax dollars!!

You think that’s not a good idea?

Bush’s War in Iraq has pushed our military to the breaking point. The administration has been using stop-loss rules to hold soldiers who have already served out their full terms of enlistment beyond the time they signed on to serve. 58,300 soldiers have been involuntarily held beyond the ends of their terms of enlistment. These guys aren’t going to be reenlisting after that sort of treatment.

Who’s supposed to replace them?

draft, draft, draft!

funny how that notion shuts up a lot of Obama supporters — who are in their prime draft-age!

who me? blogging sure looks better than fighting in Iran, Pakistan…

I’ve been to war, thank you very much. And I was a volunteer.

Comment by james | 2008-07-02 19:06:47

Actually, I believe the draft is a very good idea. It makes us a lot more careful about the wars we get ourselves into.

If you consciencously oppose military service, there should be a national service option. Everybody. No exceptions. Rich and poor alike.

Comment by WildChild | 2008-07-02 19:11:07

Sorry you don’t get to “conscientiously oppose military service” Any type of national military lottery puts all our butts on the line. No exceptions.

Amen, James. One of the sadest think about Nam, was that there was an education loophole in the draft. In college, like Cheney? Okay, you don’t have to go. So guess who is treating Nam vets at the VA facilities??? The profesionals that were in school while the draftees fought the war. Let’s not turn the page. let’s learn from the past.

I was part of the lottery. If the bots think it`s a good idea, I can regale them of a few drawbacks to that notion. Of course I`m sure they will all run and sign up ,now that the ONE has authorized it.

He doesn’t get to call Americans to service when he:
1. Won’t pledge his allegiance to my country
2. Most likely refused to register for selective service
3. NEVER SERVED!!!
