Where Does Obama Really Stand on Pay Equity?

What He Wants Us To Believe

Barack Obama has made recent claims indicating pay equity for women would be a top priority if he were elected President. Sounds great. In fact, it might compel some to seriously consider his candidacy.

Don’t be fooled. What we’ve seen of Mr. Obama is a candidacy based on opportunism. Whenever convenient, he will use his prose to proclaim lofty ideals, ideals that many want so badly to believe in, ideals so many want to become realities.

Mr. Obama is all talk. How do we really know if his lofty ideals will translate into actual policy? We certainly can not point to his legislative accomplishments. There are too few. He may have been present but what the hell does that mean - nothing in the context of policy.

Anyone can advocate anything. A true leader turns advocacy into bona-fide action. We’ve not seen this from Mr. Obama. We have seen, unfortunately, reversals and inconsistencies.

Actions

While Mr. Obama may be an advocate for pay equity, analysis of his Senate staff leaves one to wonder. We know the reports that show women on his staff earn roughly $6,000 less than males on staff. But, here is further information:

  • Of five staffers that earned more than $100,000 only one was a women
  • Of staffers earning more than $23,000/year, 33 were men while 31 were women and the pay difference between them was >$10,000

Comparatively speaking, Senator Hillary Clinton’s Senate staff is comprised more than 2 to 1 women to men. And, the pay is nearly equal. In fact, nearly 70% of Clinton’s staff are women.

Did You Know?

Senator John McCain’s Senate staff, comprised of 69 individuals as of October, 2007 which also includes interns, MORE than half were women. Excluding the 23 interns, the 30 women on his staff earned an average of $59,100 compared to the $56,600 earned by the 16 men.

Remember, talk is cheap. Look for action, past and present. I own my vote.

Follow Obama’s money and you will find the same investment banks (Goldman Sachs Morgan Stanley, etc.) currently pulling the Enron scam on oil prices. The banks have been propping up this unknown, inexperienced candidate since long before any of the rest of us had heard of him.

Pay equity and all other women’s issues are irrelevant when you consider this guy is just fronting as the “user interface” of a criminal organization. His campaign blackmailed and forced a woman candidate who was winning to drop out of the race. It doesn’t get any more oppressive than that, given the stakes involved here.

To join a public pressure campaign to get the Senate Commerce Comm. to investigate the media conspiracy in this election, check out this web page:

Please also consider contacting Marc Rubin’s “The Denver Group” and urging them to organize a protest outside the DNC Headquarters in D.C. now. It may be too late to stop this coup de tat by the time the convention rolls around. And if Nader can go around the country getting his name on the ballot as an Independent, Clinton should be doing the same. Let’s try to keep our eyes on the ball, folks.

I understand that she wanted to make this country a better place and I still believe she would make the best POTUS of the three. However I can’t overlook that she caved in so quickly. She should have taken her case to the convention. Her bowing out so early does not help this country. She should have kept making the case against Obama. She was the only one that could stand up against the DNC.

There is a political axiom that when your opponent is beating himself up (this is paraphrasing) you only need to step back and watch. If Hillary had stayed in, Obama would have made HER the story. By stepping back (suspending, not quitting) OBAMA is now the story and we see the press covering his flip-flops to the dismay of his far-left base. Will the Democratic Elite realize what is happening before the election? (the horror! the horror! - Huffington posters saying they will not give another penny to Obama). Whether the DNC train can be diverted to Hillary Clinton in time is another question. It all has the fascination of an impending train wreck - but don’t blame Hillary. She did everything she could.

Comment by angie | 2008-07-03 14:44:24

I agree — plus, by doing this, Hillary is preserving her cred with the AA voters — she is going to need to unify the party if she gets the nom. in August, and doing what she is doing now (stepping back & letting Obama implode so that she can’t be blamed for it) is the only chance she (and this country) has.

Joe, you don’t know what was going on behind the scenes like Hillary did. The pressure from every quarter was enormous, including in her own state. She would have had very little internal support going to the convention, including the necessary superdelegates. I agree, there should have been a fight over the RBC decision alone, but it’s easy to judge from a distance. And then there is the money. The debt is a major obstacle.

I trust Hillary’s political acumen.

Comment by Ani | 2008-07-03 14:42:00

She did not “bow” out. Please. She was forced out and had so much pressure placed on her by her own NY delegation, never mind all the party leadership stabbing her in the back left and right, at that point, there was nothing she could do.

That lady has the heart of a lion and had to stand up to more bullshit and misogyny and backstabbing cowards in the DNC than anyone I have ever seen.

Please, I implore you — get involved with The Denver Group, PUMA, Just Say No Deal, if you are not already. Scream from the highest hill that you demand an open convention with her name on the ballot — she fought as hard as she could — now it is up to us to fight for her.

She never caved. Cowardly super delegates ran to the empty suit Obama on the last day to give him the delegates to put him over the top and the NY delegation came to her and threatened her friends in Congress with primary challenges, never mind what else, if she didn’t suspend.

She was on the phone with super delegates all day telling them to hold their water and Hillary was informed the higher ups told the delegates to tell her they would NOT support her at the convention.

Please tell me what choise did she have at that point? She was standing alone.

I can only speak for myself but I am donating to http://thedenvergroup.blogspot.com/ which is designed to make sure her name is on the ballot and there is a roll call at the convention.

There are so many out here doing everything they can to expose Obama.

Don’t give up.

Your actions, sir, speak volumes. And based on those actions I cannot support you because I cannot believe your words. You are not a man of your word and you have no convictions. I cannot vote for you for this and many other reasons where your words do mo match your actions.

Obama is a serial liar. Even his book “Dreams” is a fraud and should be in the FICTION section.

Obama LAUNDRY LIST OF LIES.

1.) Selma Got Me Born - LIAR, your parents felt safe enough to have you in 1961 - Selma had no effect on your birth, as Selma was in 1965.

27.) I Passed 26 Of My Own Bills In One Year - LIAR, they were not YOUR bills, but rather handed to you, after their creation by a fellow Senator, to assist you in a future bid for higher office.

28.) No One Contacted Canada About NAFTA - LIAR, the Candian Government issued the names and a memo of the conversation your campaign had with them.

45.) I Have Always Been Against Iraq - LIAR, you weren’t in office to vote against it AND you have voted to fund it every single time, unlike Kucinich, who seems to be out gutting you Obama. You also seem to be stepping back from your departure date - AGAIN.

46.) I Have Always Supported Universal Health Care - LIAR, your plan leaves us all to pay the 15,000,000 who don’t have to buy it.

47.) I Only Found Out About My Investment Conflicts Via Mail - LIAR, both companies you site as having sent you letters about this conflict have no record of any such letter ever being created or sent.

48.) I Am As Patriotic As Anyone - LIAR, you won’t wear a flag pin and you don’t put your hand over your heart during the Anthem.

49.) My Wife Didn’t Mean What She Said About Pride In Country - LIAR, your wife’s words follow lock-step in the vain of Wright and Farrahkan, in relation to their contempt and hatred of America.

50.) Wal-Mart Is A Company I Wouldn’t Support - LIAR, your wife has received nearly a quater of a million dollars through Treehouse, which is connected to Wal-Mart.

51.) Treehouse Is A Small Company - LIAR, the CEO of Treehouse last year, made more than the CEO of Wal-Mart, according to public records.

52.) University Of Chicago Hospital Pay Is Fair - LIAR, your wife’s pay raise was nearly 150% her already bloated rate and the hospital is a Non-Profit Hospital, which made $100,000,000 in the last 3 years. They overcharge blacks VS whites for services, and overcharge everyone in general by 538%!

53.)I Barely Know Rezko - Only 5 Billed Hours - LIAR, you have known him for 17 years, and decided to do a real estate deal with him during a time when he was proven to be under investigation. Despite this, you divided your property and had them take off $300K before the mortgage problems started. Then Rezko’s wife buys the lot beside it that you can’t afford, saving you $625,000.

54.) My Donations Have Been Checked Thoroughly - LIAR, you only gave back Hsu ($72K) and Rezko ($150K) their money when publically called on their involvement in your campaigns.

55.) My Church Is Like Any Other Christian Church - LIAR, your church is so extreme, the pastor who married you, Rev. Wright, just got done blaming the US for 9/11 and named Louis Farrahkan their person of the year.

56.) I Disagree With My Church All The Time - LIAR, you still have yet to repudiate Wright, who married you and your wife, and you still donate large sums of money to assist the church in furthering its message - hatred and revenge. You donated in 2006 alone, $22,500 to the church that you so terribly disagree with. That is nearly $500 PER WEEK - that sure is disagreement, Senator Obama.

57.) I Have Clean Connections Despite Rezko - LIAR, you are not only connected to Exelon and Rezko, you are also connected to Hillary PAC supporter Mr. Hsu, AND an Iraqi Billionaire of ill repute, Nadhmi Auchi, who ripped off people in the Food For Oil, Iraqi deal. Seems Mr. Auchi may have helped Obama buy his million dollar property long before Obama had millions of dollars. Wonder what favors Mr. Auchi expects, when Obama leaves Iraq free to be taken over by special interests such as him.

58.) I never heard sermons like Rev. Wright’s, that have been in videos all day, You Tube - LIAR! 3 days later during your Mea Culpa BS speech you said “Did I hear controversial statements while I sat in that church? Yes I did.”

Comment by educatedwhitewoman | 2008-07-03 12:27:26

Obama actually received $250,000 from Rezko, although it it took Obama months to admit the true amount - after being confronted time and again with revelations of ever-higher donation amounts.

Yea, don’t you remember during the debate when Hillary slammed his “slumlord,” and he responded with the lame excuse that he “had only done 5 hours of work for him?!”

Just like the NH debate, when she challenged him for using a pharmaceutical lobbyist as his NH Campaign Chair, he shook his head and said, “That’s not true.” Guess what? It WAS true, and NO ONE FOLLOWED UP ON IT! I still can’t believe he could blatantly lie on national TV and there were no repercussions. Meanwhile, Hillary’s Bosnia gaffe (misspeaking about something that happened in a WAR ZONE 15 years ago!) became constant TV fodder for 3 weeks. People still point to that and declare: “Hillary’s a liar!” Really pis*es me off!

Comment by StrawberrybitesBarky | 2008-07-03 14:11:16

Bosnia was still very dangerous at the time, she did not lie. If a sniper could have shot off the First Lady’s head, he would have. Call Obamabots on it everytime.

as independence day approaches, i have to ask:

“I Am As Patriotic As Anyone - LIAR, you won’t wear a flag pin”

what does not wearing a flag pin have to do with true patriotism? what is patriotism to you? to me, wearing a flag pin could never stand in for the true meaning of patriotism: love of the founding ideals of my country and the community who shares those same ideals.

a flag pin is just a symbol and would much easier to fake than true patriotism.

Comment by Hope Floats | 2008-07-03 13:44:13

Well, now Obama wears a flag pin, but it is a legitimate expression of solidarity during war. It would have been a nice gesture from someone who has been so critical of the war in essence saying that they support our troops. There have been too few demonstrations of this concern from Obama, and the flag pin drives the point home. Now, he has used it as what he condemned all along - a distraction and a cheap substitute for the genuine article.

Comment by yaz | 2008-07-03 13:55:48

well, i’ll agree that he capitulated on that point and is using it as a cheap substitute (not FOR patriotism but to CONVEY patriotism). and that was very disappointing to me.

but i don’t understand why you can’t just actually support the troops and say out loud that you support the troops instead of wearing a pin or having a bumper sticker. in fact, i’m not sure why we don’t just assume that people support the troops unless they say otherwise. he never gave any reason to think that he didn’t support the troops — who wouldn’t?

and i can agree that it IS a legitimate expression of solidarity. but there’s no reason that it needs to become a requirement of some kind, such that not doing it suddenly raises questions (especially b/c he explained himself).

what really gets me is that i thought it was the republican war-mongers who were trying to coopt the symbols and create this meme that someone with a flag sticker is more patriotic or supportive of the troops than someone else. but through this campaign that same small-mindedness has started coming from parts of the democratic party. and the motivations for are just a little suspicious.

“Uh…I never heard those kinds of things.”

“Uh…I was there, but didn’t hear those things.”

“Uh…I was there and I did hear those things, but he’s like family–a crazy old uncle.”

Of staffers earning more than $23,000/year, 33 were men while 31 were women and the pay difference between them was >$10,000

So we’re saying that the 33 men took in a total of $10,000 more than the 31 women. Let me see… That would mean that either all the guys averaged $303 more than the ladies over an entire year–which comes out to a difference of a bit over $1 per day–or that there happen to be a few more men with higher pay ratings on Obama’s staff than women. (We’re not even considering whether some of these employers might be working part-time, and whether some of those employees might be women.)

I suppose if we try very hard we can imagine this is obvious proof gender-based pay discrimination.

John McCain, of course, treats men and women equally. He voted against raising the federal minimum wage to $7.25/hr, which is a fine example of treating everyone the same, regardless of gender. It isn’t really his fault if more women happen to hold jobs that would be affected by the minimum wage rate than men. Or that those women are more likely to be young working mothers with children to support.

I entirely agree that actions speak louder than words.

Comment by tiberius | 2008-07-03 12:49:02

Is that comment an example of the race card thing that you folks keep going on about?

Really, Obama’s church has nothing whatsoever to do with the topic of pay equity and gender discrimination.

Comment by StrawberrybitesBarky | 2008-07-03 14:18:25

You have heard the way women are talked about in that church, right? Not just Hillary. You probably don’t go to church, you don’t understand that your beliefs and values are the same as your church’s beliefs and values to religious people. Get it? So if your church treats women like shit, you probably will too.

Comment by tiberius | 2008-07-03 17:08:17

Actually, no, I haven’t heard that women are spoken poorly of in that particular church. I find this difficult to believe, since it’s a family community church, where husbands, grandfathers, fathers, sons, and brothers are in the company of their wives, daughters, grandaughters, sisters, mothers, and grandmothers. As a general rule, women don’t tend to be a disempowered faction in predominantly black churches.

As a matter of fact, I don’t go to church. That was an adult decision. I owe my moral sensibilites to very good parenting. I attended an Episcopalian high school during the 1960s, and likely owe some of my left-leaning social consciousness to that.

Is that comment an example of the race card thing that you folks keep going on about?

An example of “using the race card” would be purposely stategizing to wrongly paint your Democratic opponent as racist. For one Democrat to do that to another is unthinkable, IMO, and that completely disgusting tactic was compounded by the fact that Obama campaigned as someone who wants to bring the country together.

There were some unfortunate comments made by both Hillary and Bill–and also by some high-placed Clinton supporters–that opened Hillary up to criticism. Bill’s comment that South Carolina was going for Obama just as it once went for Jesse Jackson; Hillary’s comment that Obama’s support among working, hard-working Americans, white Americans, is weakening again; Geraldine Ferraro’s summation of Obama’s candidacy with the comment that he’s lucky he’s black. “If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position.” (Good Lord, Geraldine, what the hell were you thinking? That televised comment did more damage to the Clinton campaign than all the Obama bloggers on the planet!)

I never thought of the Clintons as being even remotely racist, but such statements made in very public places during a hotly contested primary election were horrible blunders. FOX News gave them all a tremendous amount of play. And, of course, a lot of Obama people picked up on them and used them to fullest advantage.

If that’s playing the race card, I suppose it’s been played. I disagree that it ever should have been. But you need to keep in mind that it wasn’t Obama who dealt the card into the game.

You need only remember that the racist accusation has been used far more against Obama than on his behalf. I doubt if a day goes by that I don’t see at least a dozen references to Reverend Wright, presented as evidence that Obama is a racist. I remember when I couldn’t turn on the TV without seeing carefully edited Reverend Wright out-takes being used to discredit a member of his congregation. Sometimes it seemed like they were playing them at 15 minute intervals.

You honestly expect to play a game like that without drawing some return fire?

Still fixated on the Clinton’s eh? It’s Ok, you will be for at least the next four years if BOBO is elected president. Like the fringe that preceded you “bu Bu But.. Clinton” will roll off your tongue every time BOBO comes under any criticism.

I’m not the least bit fixated on the Clintons. I always liked them both. Still do. I wish Hillary was the presumptive nominee, but that’s not how things worked out. What I’m fixated on is seeing that a democrat is elected. What I was previously fixated on was Bush policy. I’d rather not see his policy survive his term in office, because his policy has brought us to the brink of ruin. Pick anybody from the original pack of democratic primary contenders. I’d have supported that democrat against John McCain. Even the new guy, who I prefered to one or two to begin with.

I’m a democrat, because of what the republicans have done, and will do if allowed. This is hard to understand?
