Obama’s Iraq Backtrack

In the much discussed ABC Pennsylvania Democratic debate, Senators Clinton and Obama were asked if they would be steadfast in removing troops from Iraq even if commanders and generals disagreed. Senator Obama was adamant:
GIBSON: And, Senator Obama, your campaign manager, David Plouffe, said, “When he is” — this is talking about you — “When he is elected president, we will be out of Iraq in 16 months at the most. There should be no confusion about that.”
So you’d give the same rock-hard pledge, that no matter what the military commanders said, you would give the order to bring them home?
OBAMA: Because the commander-in-chief sets the mission, Charlie.
That’s not the role of the generals.
And one of the things that’s been interesting about the president’s approach lately has been to say, “Well, I’m just taking cues from General Petraeus.”
Well, the president sets the mission. The general and our troops carry out that mission. And, unfortunately, we have had a bad mission set by our civilian leadership, which our military has performed brilliantly. But it is time for us to set a strategy that is going to make the American people safer.
Now, I will always listen to our commanders on the ground with respect to tactics, once I’ve given them a new mission, that we are going to proceed deliberately, in an orderly fashion, out of Iraq, and we are going to have our combat troops out. We will not have permanent bases there.
Once I have provided that mission, if they come to me and want to adjust tactics, then I will certainly take their recommendations into consideration. But, ultimately, the buck stops with me as the commander-in-chief. [emphasis mine]
Well, that was the primary, and this is the general, and in classic Obama form, he’s backtracking.
Looks like Obama’s planning on passing the buck: don’t like our new timeline, don’t like that we can’t get the troops out?…Blame the commanders.
But if that wasn’t enough, now he’s talking about “refining” his timeline and Iraq policy.
Senator Barack Obama said Thursday the United States cannot sustain a long-term military presence in Iraq, but added that he would be open to “refine my policies” about a timeline for withdrawing troops after meeting with American military commanders during a trip to Iraq later this month.
Mr. Obama, whose popularity in the Democratic primary was built upon a sharp opposition to the war and an often-touted 16-month gradual timetable for removing combat troops, dismissed suggestions that he was changing positions in the wake of reductions in violence in Iraq and a general election fight with Senator John McCain.
“I’ve always said that the pace of withdrawal would be dictated by the safety and security of our troops and the need to maintain stability. That assessment has not changed,” he said. “And when I go to Iraq and have a chance to talk to some of the commanders on the ground, I’m sure I’ll have more information and will continue to refine my policies.”
As he arrived for a campaign stop in North Dakota, Mr. Obama told reporters on Thursday that he intended to conduct “a thorough assessment” of his Iraq policy during a forthcoming trip to the country. He stressed that he has long called for a careful and responsible withdrawal of American forces, but he declined to offer a fresh endorsement of his plan to remove one to two combat brigades a month.
“My 16-month timeline, if you examine everything that I’ve said, was always premised on making sure that our troops were safe,” he said. “I said that based on the information that we had received from our commanders that one to two brigades a month could be pulled out safely, from a logistical perspective. My guiding approach continues to be that we’ve got to make sure that our troops are safe and that Iraq is stable.” [emphasis mine]
What happened to “the buck stops here” and “the commander in chief sets the mission?” Strap on your seat belts and hold on to your seats, a much larger flip-flop is on the way. It is guaranteed that upon his return from Iraq he will have “seen the light” and come to the conclusion that we can’t pull the troops out. He’s already given us his new buzzword, “refine.” We can all expect another addition of WORM (What Obama Really Meant). I’m predicting it right now folks. But, this is a safe prediction as it was foreshadowed months ago by Samantha “Monster” Power:
In short, Obama’s consistent stance on Iraq and plan to remove the troops is what Bill Clinton always said it was; a fairy tale.

That’s a crock. Why do you make excuses for this minion? If Hillary would have done that you would jumped all over her for pandering. You would have said that she is another Bush and yet you come here and make excuses for that clown that you call a candidate? He has no stance on anything. Look at his voting record. That says it all. When he was asked to put his name by a yeah or nay on any controversial matter he just did not vote. How do you know that if he gets elected that he will not pander to the corporations? How do you know he will not pander to the rich people? That and “no one has done more for…” whatever issue (and either side of that issue). Obama is always consistent in his own mind, because he has always pandered to both sides of any issue.
Yet, his supporters will find a way not only to support his “change”, but they will blame Hillary or Bill Clinton for making it nescessary.
What amazes me is that this flip-flopper continues to get away with this garbage. Where are our Super Delegates? Are they all that dense that they don’t see what’s happening? Thank Heavens for PUMA, and No Quarter, and the Hillary Clinton Forum, and Just Say No Deal, and so on, and so on. I’m am so very disgusted with the leadership (if we can call it leadership)of the Party that was at one time the party for the people. It seems now that it’s the party for Obama. I want it back.

So true. PDM - it’s about the money and power, and nothing more. I know it sounds kinda foil-hattish, but America is all that stands in the way of the mega-corps taking over the world. And they have their teeth sunk pretty deeply into us, at that. We’re so damned busy watching Desparate Housewives, buying the latest iPhone, and playing video games that we’ve allowed them to export all our jobs, bankrupt our farmers and grind food production for human consumption to a virtual halt, and make us so dependent on oil that we’re virtually helpless.
Americans now spend their lives trying to earn enough money to pay for Digital TV, broadband internet, SUVs/Minivans, cell phones, Plasma TVs, and of course to pay that sub-prime mortgage they can’t afford.
Now is the time for us to wake up and take back our country! If we allow these people to take total control through their puppet Obama, it will be the end of the world as we know it.
The Super Delegates are under enormous pressure to follow the party line. Those that are “common folk” and have spoken out have been replaced. The only chance we have now is to apply a greater amount of pressure on the SDs that are elected officials. We need to drill into these people that they will never again hold elected office if they vote for Obama at the Convention, and in some cases it would not be inappropriate to start investigations into their illegal activities while holding public office. The threat of jail time under an Obama Administration might just be enough to convince some of these weaklings.
And of course, there’s the money. If every PUMA were to stop using 1 product from GE (replace it with a competitors and make sure they know it), there would be a ripple effect too loud to ignore.
The leadership of the Democratic Party was perfectly happy to see Obama pose as an Anti-War Progressive in the primaries to defeat Hillary, because they wanted her beaten. She threatened their hold on the party so had to be eliminated, by hook or by crook.
Now, the leadership is perfectly happy to see Obama flip-flop and betray the Anti-War Progresses, who actually IMO deserve it for being such gullible morons in the first place, because they think that improves his chances of at least coming close in the general election.
I’m convinced that the DNC doesn’t really want a Democrat to win in November- they want control of the Legislative Branch so they can keep pretending to wield power without actually DOING anything with it, and continue to point fingers of blame at the White House whenever they fail to live up to their promises. Taking Impeachment off the table like good little children to win the approval of the MSM showed us what the “Leadership” is made of.
Naturally they like Obama- he’s a bendable, spineless little weasel, just like they are. But they don’t want him to actually WIN, because then they’d be out of excuses when they accomplish NOTHING.

I remember reading somewhere that Obama said he plans to leave the civilian contractors in Iraq. I figured that AMWY kid got to him and I wondered why no one paid attention.
Hillary answered that question before Obama, and she was brilliant. Although I know you had to focus on Obama’s answer for this post I hated to see him get even limited credit for repeating what Hillary said.
Just as it was good to hear the speech by the guy from Ohio’s machinist union, it would be good to hear clips of Hillary’s debate responses along with Obama’s statements of “Hillary has it right this time” or “this is something Hillary and I agree on”.
And don’t forget the last debate where Obama so humiliated himself he refused to debate any more, and his “followers” blamed George S. Perhaps, now that the “followers” are starting to wake up, seeing that debate again could bring them fully awake.
In another week or so, Obama will be saying we should invade Iran. His conversion to neocon will be complete.

If you look at almost anything he says he always qualifies it with some caveat. Then later he comes back and the caveat is actually what he meant to say.
It is all deliberate. This man has been lieing and using people all his life. He comes from a family that was drenched in the idea that they were morally and intellectually superior to anyone who did not agree with them and that their superiority justified their poor behavior. The rules did not apply to them.
There was an article I read on the internet a while ago, within the past year that talked about a study that showed how when people feel they are morally superior they can justify any immoral act in the name of their cause. Obama is this type of immoral person-one who feels his own moral superiority so strongly he no longer cares about what he does or who he hurts to get his way.
One nice thing about the Obama technique is that you can refer to either position on the subject as one that you’ve held for some time.

Even Dennis Kucinch, in his reasons for impeachment, says that the legislators were lied to. They were given false intelligence to make Iraq look like a greater threat than it was. I suggest you read all of Hillary’s speech on this subject. She says explicitly that only if the UN Inspectors are denied access and the UN signed off on it should we even consider going to war.
She cautioned Bush against rushing to war. She was not the only Senator that did this. He ignored them all. Even the members of his own party and his own father that said a rush to war would be a bad idea.
Hillary was one of 100 Senators.

If the intelligence was false, then you need to go back to 1998 when the Congressional Dems enthusiastically passed the Iraqi Freedom Act and signed into law by Pres. Clinton authorizing military intervention to overthrow Saddam. The statements made by Congressional Dems. Pelosi, Kerry, Jay Rockefeller, Kennedy, etc., on the record all said they were more than convinced by the evidence that Saddam possessed WMDS, had stockpiles of chemical weapons and had an active program to develop nuclear weapons.
I guess you missed the debate that asked Hillary if she thought BO could be a good president. Her reply was Yes Yes Yes. Of course Hillary meant IN TIME he’d make a good president. He needs to get some sort of resume /experience before he sits in the Oval Office. Does he have potential? Yes, he does. Add to that paper-thin resume of his and become vetted—then he just might be the kind of leader our great nation needs….someday - when he grows up.

I’m certain that the obamabots will scream bloody murder over these two links. While many believe Lyndon LaRouche is not credible, I challenge everyone to read what he says about the Soros connection to this Primary and his role in promoting obama’s candidacy precisly to push Hillary out of the race and then push him under the bus once he’s served his purpose.

What is reported in the second link does put into perspective the outrageous treatment of Hillary and explains why she had to suspend her campaign. The powerful forces lurking in the background are calling the shots and will destroy anyone who gets in their way and I’m certain Hillary was warned not to push this to the Convention.
Ultimately, it will come down to the people’s resolve to push this cause on her behalf in order to save our country from these forces who wish to destroy democracy.

Did you read the article? Can you stop being hysterial for a moment and look at what the article says and decide for yourself if he’s wrong or just being demonized, like everyone else, who questions and is willing to investigate these people? Do you believe the MSM is going to cover this stuff?

Obama deserves criticism for alot of things but I’m not so sure this in one of them. Or rather, you should criticize him on lying to you about the viability of the whole “cut and run” strategy. Many democrats talk big about this issue, trying to delineate a difference from the republicans on an important issue. But, it just isn’t realistic. That’s why Clinton took such a hawkish position on this. She thought she was a lock to the next President. What’s more, George Bush thought she was a lock as well. If you remember, months ago, he briefed her on the situation. Probably told her far more than the average politico knows. Days later, she started talking like a hawk.
Obama is likely the next democratic nominee. Someone high up has obviously briefed him on the REALITY of certain things. Whatever they told him, it’s caused him to start singing a different tune.
He KNOWS he can’t deliver on the out of Iraq talk. So he’s backing off that position. Nothing wrong with that.
Not the first time the dems have had to do that either. A world where all you had to do was turn the other cheek, in order to secure the peace, would be nice. Unfortunately, that’s not the world we live in.

WHAT exactly has Obama done to prepare him to be Commander in Chief?! The only position he has held, is as Chair on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee for NATO in Europe, and he DIDN’T HAVE A SINGLE HEARING!
