Obama Fails to Attract Hillary’s Supporters

Not only is Obama failing to gain Hillary’s supporters, his support from registered Democrats has dropped from 59% to 54%, according to CNN (thanks PPM):

A growing number of Clinton supporters polled say they may stay home in November instead of casting their ballot for Obama, an indication the party has yet to coalesce around the Illinois senator four weeks after the most prolonged and at times divisive primary race in modern American history came to a close.

According to a CNN/Opinion Research Corp. poll released Friday, the number of Clinton supporters who plan to defect to Republican Sen. John McCain’s camp is down from one month ago, but — in what could be an ominous sign for Obama as he seeks to unify the party — the number of them who say they plan to vote for Obama is also down, and a growing number say they may not vote at all.

In a CNN/Opinion Research Corp. survey completed in early June before the New York senator ended her White House bid, 60 percent of Clinton backers polled said they planned on voting for Obama. In the latest poll, that number has dropped to 54 percent.

Now why could that be? The new gets worse, according to CNN:

In another sign the wounds of the heated primary race have yet to heal, 43 percent of registered Democrats polled still say they would prefer Clinton to be the party’s presidential nominee. Watch why Clinton supporters are struggling with supporting Obama »

That number is significantly higher than it was in early June, when 35 percent of Democrats polled said they preferred Clinton to lead the party’s presidential ticket. …

The rest of the article is devoted to a silly poll about attitudes towards Bill Clinton, hardly the Democratic party’s current — and immediate — worry.

The immediate problem for the Democratic party is its FIXED nomination of Barack Obama that disenfranchised millions of Democratic party loyalists across the nation — starting with Florida and Michigan.

Then there were the caucuses, mobbed by young, affluent Obama supporters who were not properly checked to determine if they are registered to vote. And the millions of people who couldn’t attend a caucus that runs several hours because they are working, have small children, are ill, are in hospitals or nursing homes, or disabled. Don’t miss our radio show that describes the “Texas two-step” and more, when Bud White interviewed The Denver Group.

The article assumes that Hillary’s supporters will come around. Wrong.

We know who won the popular vote. We know who the people of the KEY SWING STATES voted for — those states essential for a presidential victory. We witnessed the thievery of the RBC committee.

Nobody “gets over” that kind of crooked, unDemocratic treatment.

MUST READ MUST PASS ALONG ASAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

TEXAS CAUCUS FRAUD HEARINGS - JULY 7
It is very important that everyone in Texas knows about this meeting and people show up, testify and protest. Also anyone with press contacts needs to contact them and get them there. Please forward this to everyone. I know this is a sham by the DNC but we have to make alot of noise. If you witnessed caucus fraud, voter intimidation, or supression, please contact me at drlynettelong@aol.com. Thanks, Lynette

I am pleased to inform you the first meeting of the Advisory Committee on the Texas Democratic Party Convention/Caucus System has been scheduled. Headed by Senator Royce West, this first of several meetings will convene at the Austin Community College Health Science Building, Building 9000 in the Multi Purpose Hall room 8500 in Austin, Texas on July 7, 2008 at 10:00am. The campus is located at 3401 Webberville Rd, Austin, Texas 78702.
This Committee which Senator West and I have appointed has been charged with studying the current convention/caucus system. Furthermore, based on the testimony taken at these meetings, the committee will then consider this feedback and possibly make recommendations for changes.
While all meetings will be open to the public, the first committee meeting will be limited to invited testimony only. Senator West and the Committee members wish to use this initial meeting as an informational session. They will discuss with current and former Party leaders the history and development of the current convention/caucus system.
Those wishing to participate at this meeting are encouraged to submit written testimony to the Committee, or complete an online survey, available on the Texas Democratic Party website. Additionally, there will be other hearings held in Austin and throughout the state where public testimony will be taken in order to learn about your personal experience with the convention/caucus system. Those hearings will be scheduled at a later date.
So whether it is by completing the online survey or by attending the upcoming Committee meetings, I hope you will take a moment to share your thoughts. Your feedback will play an important role as we continue to explore our current Democratic Primary process. Only by working together will we be able to grow and strengthen as a Party.
Thank you again for helping us make your Party stronger and more unified than ever before.
Your friend and fellow Democrat,
Boyd L. Richie
Chairman

Dear fellow Democrats
THANKS!!!

I fail to see how this will correct the 2008 primary/caucus debacle. It appears to be a hearing on how to fix the system for the ‘next time’.
Is there no redress for the fraud and abuse of the 2008 cycle?

Comment by Lou | 2008-07-05 12:34:18

Hillary would get delegates from the hearing..it makes a statement for the convention.

We are talking about 16 years from now for Chelsea. You Obamaites would grab onto anything, however thin it is. A lot can happen in 16 years.

On the other hand Obama was elected to the Illinois House Senate 11 years ago. And before that he held a number of part time jobs.

So please don’t insult our intelligence with inane and inappropriate comparisons.

Make Dr. King Proud on the Anniversary of his “I Have A Dream” Speech.

Make his Words Ring Loud and Clear! Let’s prove him right!

Let “HIS” words come to Life in the 21st Century!

Mark your Calendars for the summer evening when Hillary comes to the podium in Denver to speak and to say: I accept the nomination of my Party and will be honored to lead you back to a path of peace and prosperity.

Right On! Hillary 2008!

Thank you Dr. King! We hear you still. Loud and Clear, Sir!

Comment by wodiej | 2008-07-05 10:59:49

Martin Luther King would be appalled at Obama and his actions-APPALLED. This is in direct contrast to the speech he gave. Instead of trying to embrace equality it has turned into resentment and vengenance for past wrongs that cannot be taken back. We can only move forward.

Many people through history have endured injustice-look at women. But you work and fight to change it. Preaching sermons that full of hate will not change things. It only riles people up, makes them angrier and solves nothing.

Obama’s problems are just beginning and this poll is one of the first indications of that.

Hmm…in Jan. 2007 the DNC announced the dates for the Denver Convention - with the Dem presumptive nominee accepting the nomination on the anniversary of Dr. King’s “I have a dream” speech.

Yes - it was a FIXED primary from the gitgo!

Obama’s race-baiting and false accusations of racism DO NOT reflect the actions and teachings of Dr. King.

And a thousand Camelot references can’t make Michelle into Jackie.

Comment by Mr. X | 2008-07-05 11:03:09

The reason the number of registered Dem Hillary supporters who will vote for McCain is down is because many of them are no longer registered Dems. Even so, Obama’s support in his own party is STILL dwindling.

Amazing! Amazing!

I’d like to see a poll based on people who were registered Dems in Nov 2007 regardless of their current status.

Comment by Clara Barton | 2008-07-05 11:05:23

You made a very good point. I’m willing to bet the number of Dems overall is down

Comment by Kevin | 2008-07-05 11:13:29

True
I’m sure the DNC isn’t too interested in revealing those numbers. And McCain still leads among independants.

Comment by Thomas | 2008-07-05 11:21:32

Not so fast. Hillary supporters this past week are beginning to think maybe she will get another chance to win the nomination at the convention.

Obama’s dash to the right is pissing off even his true believers. With 80% of the country stating that we are heading in the wrong direction, he thinks staying left of center is risky.

Unbelievable.

Comment by Annie Oakley | 2008-07-05 14:31:09

Exactly. This poll doesn’t account for the lifelong Dems who have re-registered. I know I have, so I’m left out of their accounting.

Comment by Clinton Fan | 2008-07-05 11:09:28

Susan,

I have to agree with your rather cogent point–it’s not JUST that Obama is the less qualified Democrat to be the standard-bearer, it’s that the Democratic Party FIXED the results.

Really. If we’d wanted to be Republicans, we would have joined that bunch…they’re the ones who “fix” elections….or so we thought.

I guess they’re all bastards.

In any event, I’m going to try not to gag and vote for the Sailor if Clinton isn’t the nominee. I’ll count on Congress to keep the guy in line.

While Obama crashing/burning is unlikely, it COULD happen–who ever thought Eagleton would be bounced off the ticket lo, those many years ago?

Every time Obama turns up on TV, he’s either sticking his foot in his mouth, or pulling hard with both hands, trying to get it out.

Not confidence-inspiring.

After over thirty years as a registered Democrat, I have to say, I feel no affiliation with or for them anymore.

The liberating thing about all that is when they call me to participate in party “grunt work” volunteer activities, I tell them NO…and I tell them WHY. When they tell me that I “don’t MEAN that” I tell them that I DO, and please don’t fucking call me anymore–find one of those glassy-eyed stoned “Yes We Can” punks to sell Obama’s muddied Iraq Exit Strategy and his “Keep Shoveling The Cash” Faith Based plan across the land!

I have been using the free time to VERY good effect, too. I’ve decided to put MYSELF first for a change. It’s beneficial….!

Comment by standard | 2008-07-05 11:31:10

Thanks for the reminder about Eagleton.
It gives such Hope that Change is not too late.

Comment by Zee | 2008-07-05 12:59:31

Amen, Clinton Fan!

One of those “Yes we con!” bratz came to the door and I told him “I’m voting for McCain!” and as he scurried away I said, “go steal someone else’s vote!”

I still think we need to work for Hillary, but it’s going to take a MEDIA backlash as well as a VOTER backlash to work.

The DNC, like all social organizations, only really care about two things: new members and more money.

We need to amplify the media spotlight on Obama’s flipflopping and alienating his core base (I believe Alterman articulated the meme: Is Obama a SELLOUT?”)
as well as promote the growth and determination of PUMA.

This is shaping up as the best opportunity ever for the creation of a third party. The bipartisan military keynesianism of the Dems and Reps have sent this country into the tank. We’re always promised change we can believe in, but we always get the same old thing. Even Democratic politicians who genuinely want change are stymied by their own party. We don’t need to stay at home and we don’t need to vote for McCain. What we need is a party this is dedicated to representing the interests of the American people, not the interests of the multinational corporations.

Comment by Thomas | 2008-07-05 11:31:48

I agree. But first, I’m willing to correct the injustice in the Democratic Party.

If Hillary wins the nomination in Denver then fine. But if she doesn’t then I would suggest a mass movement over to whatever party with the most developed national infrastructure. That’s probably the green Party.

Even if we only use their party this election, we will will put all of D.C. on notice that 2010 will be a year of real change.

Comment by DAB | 2008-07-05 12:24:39

No time for that right now! If Obama wins, there will be no impetus for a new party. We can do that later. Respected pollster Charlie Cook said that despite the polls, most believe that it will be a close election. Every vote will count. Don’t waste it by staying home. We have to vote McCain — after all, he once considered defecting to the Dems and John Kerry tried to get him to join his ticket.

It may not be a perfect option but its the best one available to us right now. We must stop the maniacal, manipulative, unprincipled one from taking the reigns of power!!!!

Comment by Zee | 2008-07-05 13:25:10

Comment by June | 2008-07-05 11:18:45

Be careful about writing in Senator Clinton’s name on the ballot. In some jurisdictions, a write-in candidate may simply go to ther person from the same party whose name is on the ballot. So you may end up voting for Obama unwittingly. Check your local voting rules regarding how write-in votes are handled.

Comment by Kathleen | 2008-07-05 11:31:37

Absolutely. People, a write-in in most states won’t help Hillary or stop Obama and in most cases, can be either not counted or “lost”.

The simples and most direct way to stop obama and make our voices heard that “NO WE WON’T” return to the fold, is a vote for McCain.

Comment by sjc-tx | 2008-07-05 11:35:59

Some states don;t allow a write in vote. Some do and others just count it as a “dem” vote. So Yes BE CAREFUL and BE SURE. But the best way to ensure the votes GO AGAINST obassole is to vote FOR MCCAIN.

Comment by wodiej | 2008-07-05 15:31:53

Comment by yttik | 2008-07-05 11:19:15

I really believe it’s not the Hillary suppporters who will cause Obama to loose if the DNC is stupid enough to give him the nomination. It’s not the people who are currently unhappy with Obama who will refuse to vote for him come November. It’s his base, his own supporters who have all these unrealistic expectations, who will become disillusioned with him. So many of these people are new to politics, they’re filled with idealism, and their bubble is going to burst. We’re already seeing grumbles as they get to know Obama. He’s not going to lower sea levels and end the war. He’s not going to change DC politics. He’s not The One they think he is.

Many of us will not be voting for Obama no matter what. But I think the real problem for him is going to be his own people who have elevated him to a status he cannot live up to. They’re going to be furious as they watch him disapoint over and over again.

Comment by DAB | 2008-07-05 12:34:21

I don’t think that he’ll lose a significant amount of the left although a few might protest with Nader votes and some younger voter enthusiasm may be dampened. Also some small donations may be less than anticipated. But they are likely to flock back because of their hatred of the Republicans and who can blame them. BO played them for suckers, and in their heart of hearts they know it, but they, unlike more moderate Hillary supporters, have nowhere to go. Many are currently flailing about with excuses of “at least he’s not McCain” and “he has to pander in order to get elected”.

Vote McCain - he’s our only choice.

Comment by Zee | 2008-07-05 13:28:32

Comment by JoseyJ | 2008-07-05 13:31:45

I’m sorry to hear about both of your losses. Some things are so painful we never get over them, we just learn to live with them. The DNC and Dem party screwed us over royally and we are not getting over it especially not in a few months.

mahaska, I am sorry to hear of your loss. What fuels your anger? 7 years? 2001?

I hope my curiosity is not prying.

They can cling to their silly theories. It’s not going to happen. If anything, I detect a growing anger out there.

As I’ve said before: I HAVE reached acceptance. Acceptance that I must vote for McCain to keep Obama out of office.

“Get over it”/”acceptance” = let Obama, Dean, Brazile, and the DNC get away with the crime. Why would we want to do that?

The “grief” comment was in the CNN article about Hillary supporters not supporting Obama.
Bill Schneider - “they’ll get over it.”
ugh

That grief business may have originated from Howard Dean. He was saying the losing side of the primary would need a month of grief time.

For me, I won’t get over it until BO and his enablers are defeated, either in August or in November.

Seems to me that Obama’s supporters are the ones in the first and second stages of grief - denial and anger.

Some - like the idiot in that CNN article - are clearly still in the first stage. They deny that most Hillary supporters have come to grips with Obama being the SELECTED nominee and have moved on to John McCain.

Some of Obama’s supporters have graduated to the “anger” stage. That’s why we’ve seen the hatred hurled at us here and in other blogs and forums in cyberspace since late May. Don’t feel like rehashing the crap they’ve been saying, but it’s evident that they’re extremely angry about us choosing to vote for McCain in November.

Seems like virtually none of them have made it to the “bargaining” stage yet.

It’s become fun to see this Obama mess unfold.

Hillary has been usurped! Obama has launched all his communist and socialist and hard left supporters. I thought they are just anti-war. They are actually Anti-American.

Common! Hillary is now a prisoner of Obama. Obama is taking advantage of the financial problems of Hillary. If Obama wholeheartedly supports Hillary’s financial woes, he would do the same without having annoucing every cent in the public.

The whole unity ticket is a farce!

We need to convince Bill Clinton to provide “air” on the so-called “Far Left”. We are democrats and we want to correct market failure, but we don’t want communism. Our great JFK fought against communists.

We fight the communists within our party including Kucinich and Sanders!

I pray the Clintons to withdraw their support of Obama. Obama is making fun of them.

“According to a CNN/Opinion Research Corp. poll released Friday, the number of Clinton supporters who plan to defect to Republican Sen. John McCain’s camp is down from one month ago, but — in what could be an ominous sign for Obama as he seeks to unify the party — the number of them who say they plan to vote for Obama is also down, and a growing number say they may not vote at all.”

That is like total scary Larry!!
You are really saying “disenfranchised millions of Democratic party loyalists”
Really?
Shouldn’t that be more along the lines of “disenfranchised a hand full maybe 11 total of Democratic party loyalists?

I mean really! How many can there be left? And yes I am saying what we all can guess by now! That most of you here seem to be phony Clinton supporters that are really just rightwing snots egging these poor saps on. Shame on you! You just wait until Sunday! Jesus will not be happy with you! Tricking poor Larry like this is not nice! lol

You’re obviously very much afraid of this. In a year, when Democrats should be kicking hiney, the race is close. Why is that? Could it be because your candidate is weak?

Comment by Zee | 2008-07-05 13:31:35

Well put.

Something they NEVER answer.
