Obama’s Two Faces and Forked Tongue, Part II: Welfare Reform

I don’t think it’s helpful to refer to a presidential candidate as a liar. I will not refer to Obama as a liar. That kind of talk lowers the civic discourse, it impugns the name of a public servant, and distracts us from the important duty of selecting a president. So, please ignore the image above.

However, since we happen to be on the subject of veracity, it’s come to my attention that Mr. Obama is now running an advertisement, titled “Dignity,” in which he claims to have passed welfare reform legislation. ABC News reports:

Barack Obama aligned himself with welfare reform on Monday, launching a television ad which touts the way the overhaul “slashed the rolls by 80 percent.”

Here’s an image from the ad:

However, as you may have guessed, Obama is not telling the whole story, or even part of it. Obama was opposed to President Clinton’s historic welfare reform plan:

When former President Bill Clinton was poised to sign welfare reform while running for re-election in 1996, Obama called it “disturbing.” A decade later, as an underdog running for president against Clinton’s wife, he spent 2007 avoiding the subject. By the time Obama emerged as the Democratic frontrunner in the spring of 2008, he began leaving the impression that he was for it all along.

In another example of his bizarre habit of trashing President Clinton, Obama said

“I’m not going to re-litigate what happened back in the 90s,” said Obama at a July 17, 2007, press conference in Washington, D.C. “I’m talking about what’s going to be happening going forward.”

Yet in the 1990s, Obama couldn’t hide his disdain for the only Democrat elected to a second term since 1936:

During a 1996 interview with the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Obama could not conceal his disappointment in his fellow Democrat. “Bill Clinton? Well, his campaign’s fascinating to a student of politics. It’s disturbing to someone who cares about certain issues. But politically, it seems to be working,” said Obama.

And:

And on May 31, 1997 Obama said on the floor of the Illinois state Senate, “I probably would not have supported the federal legislation.”

During this primary campaign, Obama avoided the issue:

While campaigning for president in 2007, Obama refused on two occasions to say if he would have signed the same welfare-reform bill approved by the husband of his top rival.

As he looks to square-off against John McCain, a man famous for heroism and fighting government waste, Barack Obama is attempting to signal to the country that he too is a moderate Democrat, a Third Way progressive in the tradition of Bill Clinton.

What Barack Obama fails to mention in his ad, in contrast to John McCain, is that he has surrounded himself with people who have disdain for the United States — Bill Ayers, Bernardine Dohrn, Jeremiah Wright — friendships that do not signal a modern form of liberalism but are remnants of the stale and hateful anti-American Left, a type of thinking which unfortunately seems to be resurgent.

NancyA, in a piece in these pages about Obama’s long-standing ties with the socialist reform group ACORN, shows that welfare reform is the last thing Obama and his allies would support. Indeed, ACORN’s

national goals are municipal “living” wage laws, targeting big companies like Costco, rolling back welfare reform, and regulating banks.

Obama conducted trainings for ACORN, did work for them while he was practicing law, and actively sought their endorsement for president. This is an organization that:

drives companies like Costco from urban areas that actually need jobs. Their opposition to welfare reform tends to keep the people in poverty in these areas, while causing family breakdown. The worst of their tactics is the regulation of banks. They protest “predatory lending,” putting pressure on banks to make large donations to them to finance their “non-partisan motor voter drives.” Stern says that these tactics tend to be “undisguised authoritarian socialism.”

Barack Obama held a consistent position from 1995 until June 2008. He was against welfare reform. His hostility to the Clinton administration has always been something of a puzzle for those of use who celebrated the modernizing of our Party and the victories which ensued.

The Progressive Policy Institute, the policy arm of the much-maligned DLC, issued the following statement, one I could never see Obama sincerely supporting:

The Third Way approach to economic opportunity and security stresses technological innovation, competitive enterprise, and education rather than top- down redistribution or laissez faire. On questions of values, it embraces “tolerant traditionalism,” honoring traditional moral and family values while resisting attempts to impose them on others. It favors an enabling rather than a bureaucratic government, expanding choices for citizens, using market means to achieve public ends and encouraging civic and community institutions to play a larger role in public life. The Third Way works to build inclusive, multiethnic societies based on common allegiance to democratic values.

Makes sense to me.

The neo-liberals have made it clear that their enemy, perhaps even more than the Republicans (witness Joe Lieberman), is the Third Way progressive. Their unrelenting attacks and race-baiting of Hillary was an attempt to expel any vestiges of Third Way progressivism from the Party, even though Hillary was the more progressive candidate on health care and other issues of substance; she was just too closely associated to the Clinton administration.

Barack Obama carefully crafted his pitch to the neo-liberals by criticizing the Clinton administration. “I am one of you,” he was telegraphing, the implied message being a rejection of Clinton’s center-left, moderate, market-based approach to poverty and inequality.

But now that he faces a man who speaks the Straight Talk lingo of government reform, Obama is suddenly a reformer himself. It’s a transparently political and opportunistic move, and it adds to the narrative that Obama cannot be trusted and that he lacks candor.

Bribe Probe Monica Conyers John Conyers Wife

Feds: Surveillance evidence suggests councilwoman took money tied to waste pact

DETROIT — Federal investigators have electronic surveillance evidence that allegedly links Detroit City Council President Pro Tem Monica Conyers with receiving a payment or payments in connection with a city-approved sludge contract, two people familiar with the investigation said.

John and Monica Conyers were ALL OVER the Michigan Black radio stations urging Obama supporters to vote “Uncommitted,” meaning “for Obama” during the primary.

Negating, of course, the claim that Obama didn’t get to campaign there because his name “wasn’t on the ballot.”

It was all a sham, really.

This is the type of entitlement mentality that Obama and his “friends” have, and it is dangerous. Kudos to the 8th grade young lady who showed courage and class.

You should be worried about her, since Obama supporters have taken to threatening the opposition quite frequently these days. We had a “Fight the Smears” operative here last night threatening us at no Quarter, and ssmith just posted this e-mail response from a Super Delegate on another thread:

This is the response from Steven J. Ybarra JD of California: (pasted below)

This has gotten out of hand, and if these people think they can come out and threaten us publicly, I dread to think of what is really going on here.

If anyone has heard of Ms. Pringle’s whereabouts, please let us know because I, too, am worried for her saftety in our new-found Gestapo state. I hope she has not been spirited away to a concentration camp or been physically harmed.

In many law schools, students are taught that lying is WRONG! But manipulation of the facts is okay. After all, everyone views facts and/or interprets information differently. (Remember, perception is everything.)

As a good attorney, one MUST take the law to the edge in order to best represent the client.

May we call Obama a manipulator rather than a liar?

Comment by Independent voter | 2008-07-06 10:46:03

Sure….call him what you like. Liar or manipulator boils down to the same thing =con artist.

He can parse words, be tricky, “refine positions”, confuse the issue, blame the listener for interpretation. Whatever. Nobody likes to be played for a fool. And as people discover that may very well be what is happening, the infatuation factor will fade….fast.

It has already started.

BTW, in your analogy…who is the client??

Comment by Hope Floats | 2008-07-06 11:01:38

BTW, in your analogy…who is the client??

It sure ain’t the American taxpayer. My guess would be Crown, GE, Goldmann Sachs, Boren…

More food for the republicans while they all sit and twiddle their thumbs, waiting on McCain to spring into action, I tell you something is wrong when all these juicy bits are out there and they cannot gain from this, I guess McCain is hoping the bloggers do his work for him, while he comes of as Mr.Clean.

Comment by Hope Floats | 2008-07-06 11:08:25

McCain should have started slugging away; Obama is soft in the middle, and his move to the center makes him vulnerable. It would be so easy. Two things:

1. McCain was out of the country while Obama declared himself the nominee, POTUS and Possum King of the World

2. campaign financing means Republicans must be thrifty, and they don’t want Hillary back in after they run ads against Obama

Obama has run two national ads, both biographical and one that lies about his voting for that veterans bill.

Comment by jadwiga | 2008-07-06 11:48:45

Obama’s poll numbers are still fairly good if you are willing to fool yourself. If the SDs wake up by August and allow Hillary to be voted on, and consequently Hillary becomes the nominee, all the reps efforts will be waisted. Not to mention that Hillary would have excellent chances to win the general election.
If the Karl Roves want to see a winning McCain in November, they will collect all the info that comes from NoQuarter and similar places. Just watch them after August. I can imagine that they can whip up a criminal indictment against Obama. Than they have and unopposed candidate.

Comment by Zee | 2008-07-06 14:32:47

Obama’s not even the candidate yet. He’s only the presumptive nominee.

The reason the Dems broke tradition and didn’t hold their convention in JULY as USUAL is not, as they claim, that they wanted to “wait till after the Olympics.”

The Olympics aren’t in July! They’re in August!

The fix was in and they made up an excuse so Obama of Unity and Indpendence posturing could “accept” the FIXED nomination on the anniversary of MLK’s “I have a dream” speech. END of August.

Which pushed the rethuglican convention into SEPT!!

So McCain, also, is only the presumptive nominee and the candidates can’t begin the real campaign until MID-SEPT.

Comment by lorelynn | 2008-07-06 10:22:36

Just a note of correction, Costco already pays its employees a liviing wage, and I don’t know anything about them being targeted. WalMart, most notoriously, doesn’t pay anywhere close to a living wage and is targeted. I have no idea why the article cited, and thus, this article would focus on Costco.

Comment by Bud White | 2008-07-06 10:28:35

lorelynn, my understanding is that Costco does pay their employees a living wage. The point is that radical groups like ACORN target employers like Costco and force them out of economically depressed areas.

Comment by Lou | 2008-07-06 15:35:16

Wal-Mart gives jobs to people who are technically unemployable. Good for Wal Mart. Someone needs to give them a job.

I was watching Howard Kurtz this morning (Sunday 7/6/08) on CNN and he and his panel of guests were talking about Obama and why the Internet rumors continue against Obama. One panelist joked saying: “Oh, it’s on the Internet, it must be true!” And of course my first sarcastic thought was: “Oh, well, if it is NOT on TV news, then it must be a lie.” The idea that information not showing up on TV news must mean that the Internet is full of lies, I find laughable … and of course I find it extremely dangerous to believe. If I want to find out what is going on in the world, I will do my own research because the media in general cannot be trusted. If I want to be fed B.S., I will watch TV.

Comment by NY still loves Hillary | 2008-07-06 11:11:23

All you need to do is look at what the TV industry calls “Reality TV”. If that’s reality, we are all in serious trouble!

But it goes to show why they support Obama; just like him they think if they don’t say it, it’s not true.

President Clinton refused to pander to the radical left wing groups. They knew Hillary wouldn’t pander to them either. Just like McCain refuses to pander to the radical right wing groups. Why is it you think Rush and Coulter hate the man? He doesn’t tow the line to answer to them. What amazes me is so many on both sides have fallen prey to these radical people/groups on both sides. They’re like children that need someone else to think for them. Tell them what to believe. Then there are those who’s voices were lost the true majority, that have now awakened and said enough. We need to get out those on both sides that do pander to these groups. Either work together or your gone. Enough with the childish games, this is our country.

I stipulate that they may think that they alone represent HOPE and CHANGE, but the plain truth is that they are simply POLITICIANS of a very same cloth as has been offered to the American electorate many many times before.

I am stunned at the speed with which Obama changes his positions, and I hope he settles on a platform he can believe in soon.

Obama says oops on 6 state senate votes-LA Times

http://tinyurl.com/6puopk

On June 11, 2002, Obama’s vote sparked a confrontation after he joined Republicans to block Democrats trying to override a veto by GOP Gov. George Ryan of a $2-million allotment for the west Chicago child welfare office.

Shortly afterward, Obama chastised Republicans for their “sanctimony” in claiming that only they had the mettle to make tough choices in a tight budget year. And he called for “responsible budgeting.”

A fellow Democrat suddenly seethed with anger. “You got a lot of nerve to talk about being responsible,” said Sen. Rickey Hendon, accusing Obama of voting to close the child welfare office.

Obama replied right away. “I understand Sen. Hendon’s anger. . . . I was not aware that I had voted no on that last — last piece of legislation,” he said.

Comment by Hope Floats | 2008-07-06 11:14:38

I always cite this article when my friends joke about McCain being too old and crazy to be near the red button (Edwards famously used this zinger at a NYC fundraiser last year.) Of course when they hear that Obama stripped millions from a child welfare office, voted for human cloning, voted in favor of riverboat casinos allowing gambling while dockside… twice, the answer is, “Well, John McCain would have done the same thing. Obama was just being a politician”

Comment by Zee | 2008-07-06 14:36:23

Hopefully Steve Schmidt replacing Rick Davis will help McCain get a message and stick to it. Bush started a campaign to portray John Kerry as a weak, flip flopper very early in his campaign. Obama has been trying to associate John McCain with Bush. McCain needs to hit Obama on the Iraq war and the economy - taxes and gas. As for the message, Schmidt should help. He’s one of the best the Republicans have, while Rick Davis will help vet the VP prospects and focus on fundraising.

This is very interesting. People are complaining that “ignorance is no excuse” even though their society is quite insular in that it reacts to Western culture, but in a naive way that we often think of as “cute” in a patronizing way.

We have entire BOOKS and websites of Japanese “faux pas” in English.

So, we hold THEM to the standard of needing to BE us, be up to our “standards” —- but how many people KNOW how revered the Monkey is in Asian and other cultures?

From Monkey King to Hanuman, look it up. It’s a marvelous myth and tradition.

Everyone gets it wrong now and then. Coca Cola’s ads in China translated from “Coke adds life” to “Coke brings back the dead!” Which HORRIFIED a people who revere their dead ancestors.

If Coke can’t get it right, why hold a Japanese company to a different standard?

When I look at all the big money that rolled into O’s campaign, I wonder to what extent this was big money that thinks it can pretty much own the O Whitehouse like the Bush WH—or is it buying him the nomination so Republicans have some chance of retaining the WH? I also do not quite get the current state of fund raising. I hear that Obama is raking it in and I hear that he having trouble bringing it in. Everytime Barack Obama flip flops on major issues, his hair gets a little grayer. When he started this campaign run, he looked very young with short dark hair. He is under some serious campaign stress. I think these flip flops are more shcoking because of how fast they are coming. Had he sealed the nomination in Feburary, he would have had more time to slowly move towards the right. But doing so now only makes him look like a panderer and unsure of how to articulate his beliefs and policy issues.

I suspect his Iraq trrop withdrawal plan will be very similar to McCain.

I predict this scandal will be nearly as big as Obama’s phony birth certificate.

Given all the appropriating of past presidential images (Kennedy’s LA Coliseum speech = DNC in Denver Stadium; and Reagan’s Berlin Wall = Obama’s purported trip/speech to Germany that he’s planning), we should expect Obama to use Lincoln’s famous quote to WORM more soon: “If I were two-faced, do you think I’d wear this one?”

The media has not changed. They are out there and trying to show it is John McCain who is flip flopping and completely ignoring the fact that Obama is flip flopping all over the place. I agree with the article today over at
http://obamawho.wordpress.com/ The writer there is asking people to go and vote and to vote for John McCain. They make the argument that if we do not go vote, if we vote for Nadar then this is doing nothing more than helping Obama to win and if we write Hillary’s name on the ballot if she has not stated she will accept write ins it will go for Obama. The plan is simple, while Obama is registering students of about 25 million (on Fox news this morning) we need every vote to count against him so staying home or voting Independent is wasting votes. We need to vote and vote heavy for McCain as each one of these votes is one has to overcome and a vote for Hillary in 2012. Personally I hope the nation wakes up and puts her where she should be as the elected nominee but if this doesn’t happen then I will be sure to vote McCain. I can handle four years of him but cannot handle Obama for any length of time. Puma/Just say No Deal and Democrats for McCain we need to get a drive of our own to get voters and to get them to vote against Obama and heavy this November. Please do not stay home, do not write in the name of Hillary but lets stick together, go out in masses and vote for John McCain and keep Obama out to get Hillary back.

Bud White, you are a smooth operator. :)

Snark indeed. The Acorn issue is another one of those BO “history” items that needs to be “framed” for the less informed among us.

A poster here at NQ, AnninCA, made a comment regarding the Pringle article, as being to detailed and complicated to be rendered to a “BOtoid” that would reach the “modern voter”. JimJ’s recent expose on the Globe artical focused on a summary of illegalites, involving BO’s “less than ethical” dealings.

ACORNS history of agressive intervention and illegal actions with BO’s support should be given more attention. It is doubtful that the MSM will alert the public and I thank you for your article.

It is a struggle to to show how much ACORN was apart of BO’s caucus “strategy”, for example the Nevada caucuses, where ACORN working SEIU set the bar on primary FUBAR. This needs to be exposed.

When is the Obama racist rant of Bill Clinton referring to him as “whitey” going to come out?

I want to see the Clinton’s face after they see this. Also, I want to see the Obama’s face when their disdain for the Clintons really becomes public.

Comment by Hope Floats | 2008-07-06 15:23:57

They’ve already seen it. There is no love lost between the Clintons and the Obamas.

Obama has also discovered a way to make a car that runs on feces, hot air, or flatulence.

Obama is the biggest liar I have ever seen in my life. It’s pathological and even boldly– stupidly obvious–plain blatant.

Why does he so freely lie in such a big way?

He knows his people have the media in their pockets…and he underestimates the intelligence of Americans. Big Time.

Why we lost? According to Bill Clinton it is the Far Left.

Fishing with moderate republicans, we got the following:

1. Howard Dean controls DNC.
2 Howard Dean is the marquee of the Communist Party of USA and Democratic Socialists of America.
3. Howard Dean invited the european communists in Washington in 2006 under the topic “progressive politics”.
4. Obama is the protege of Howard Dean.
5. Socialists controls Dem Party now.
6. Proof of power is the transfer of Dem Party Office in Chicago.
7. Chicago is the heartland of Communism.
8. Al Gore and Bill Clinton have became Yes man of Obama.
9. Obama is also protege of Warren Buffet and George Soros.
10. The Democratic Party was usurped by the socialist, without knowing by the ordinary liberals.

Moving to DNC main office in Chicago indicates that Howard Dean has already anointed Obama as Dem Party Standard Bearer.

If we fight Obama, we will be outplayed by the moneys of Buffet and Soros and even Oprah. They are using a different (but dirty) tactics over us.

We have to be realistic about it all! I don’t want anyone of us being physically hurt in the process. You know how powerful they are.

In conclusion, LET US BE CAREFUL! Our first goal is to make Hillary financially independent of Obama. That’s the main task. I hope we can do that before August.

I don’t have any problems calling Obama a liar because that is what he is, no doubt about that.

He is trashing Bill Clinton and by extension Hillary Clinton - what does he have to show for himself? Obama is arrogant, ignorant and hypocritical. An affirmative action candidate who has shown himself to be an expert at manipulating the system, on the minimum of qualifcations.

What does anybody really know about Obama’s Harvard career? I have read that everyone who knew him there thinks he is wonderful. I have read that he was brilliant. I have read that he was a quintessential affirmative action Harvard acceptance. I have read that his grades were poor/marginal and that is why he won’t allow them to be released. I have read that you have to be a top student to get to be editor of the Harvard Law Review and I have read that he got the post through an exception to the rules. I have no idea what is the truth and I suspect that Harvard will protect him along with such Harvard alums as Kerry and Kennedy. Has there been anyone to crack the private wall of Harvard to get at the truth?

he’s a liar, a thug, a cheater, and uses the system to get what he wants. he makes my skin crawl and the feeling builds with everything i find out about him in my research…

lorelynn, my understanding is that Costco does pay their employees a living wage. The point is that radical groups like ACORN target employers like Costco and force them out of economically depressed areas.

Thank you Bud for the plug on my article. The story behind that is another person wanted me to read and summarize it in stead it became a very focused expose if you will.

I used a little literary license here. It is actually Wal-mart that ACORN most targets. Basically
