Obama Up Against The Wall

Obama’s globe-prancing, as if he is already the elected President of the United States, has instigated a dispute within a foreign country.
The distinction between elected state leaders and a partisan candidate (one who has yet to be formally nominated!) has not escaped German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who was upset by the request by Barack Obama to give a speech at the Brandenburg Gate, calling such a rally “inappropriate.” She does not believe that Germany should give any impression that it is involved in American political races.
The Obama team is apparently surprised at the controversy, which in itself reveals a lack of understanding of the world community and international protocol. One cannot bluster into a sovereign foreign country without regard for its tradition and political situation.
To Germans, the site holds significant meaning. The Brandenburg Gate, built in the 18th century, became the symbol of peace and unification after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Speaking before this hallowed place is considered a honor that is reserved for already elected officials. Previous speakers include Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, and John F. Kennedy. (Actually, Kennedy’s famous ‘Ich bin ein Berliner’ speech was delivered at a town hall in the city, but he did visit the gate.)
According to Chancellor Merkel’s spokesman Thomas Steg. “It is unusual to hold election rallies abroad. No German candidate for high office would even think of using the National Mall (in Washington) or Red Square in Moscow for a rally because it would not be seen as appropriate.”
However, Merkel (of the more conservative Christian Democrats) does not have the last word in the matter, and the rival left-leaning government of the city-state has granted permission for Obama’s speech at the site. (UK Telegraph) One likely motivation would be to upset the Chancellor.
No matter how this matter ultimately resolves itself, Obama and his campaign started a squabble within the factions of a foreign ally. As Bill Galston, a one-time presidential adviser, told British newspaper The Telegraph, “It [the Obama campaign] shows a certain inexperience about complex foreign issues, which is, of course, the opposite of the impression they are trying to create,” he said, reports the UPI.
OK, this incident may not do signfificant or long-lasting damage between our two nations. But avoiding the matter in the first place seems like a no-brainer to anyone who knows just a little about Germany and the history and signficance of the Berlin Wall and the Brandenburg Gate. What could happen when the stakes are much higher?

Thank you! I do believe he is pathologically narcissistic and needs psychiatric help. I mean, the man truly has some serious mental health issues and needs to get help before he destroys his family or this country. But nobody in this country really takes mental health issues seriously. Most people think mental health issues aren’t real and that they’re all in peoples’ heads. But there really are mental illnesses out there, and Barack Obama has one.

And as for Merkel; she’s had a rough time with U. S. politicians (Bush’s “backrub”) so I can see her not wanting to be accused of taking sides.

A crucial point we haven’t talked about is how the U.S. State Dept. is promoting this presidential election around the world. Of course, it’s a big propaganda surge for Obama (primarily through established media and the International Herald Tribune), which underscores just how intricately involved Wall Street and the Bush Admin. are pushing this guy for the Dem. nomination. (And Pelosi claims Bush is a criminal… it’s all theatre.)
Since it’s harder to contol the press outside the U.S. than from within, it’s possible that the coup d’etat carried out against Clinton could get exposed in another country, and then inevitably get picked up by someone in the U.S. media. In fact, organizers here should invest some time in overseas outreach, since all those press outlets are covering the race. Just a thought…

Bin Laden Planning Hiroshima-Type Destruction?

Does Osama bin Laden possess nuclear weapons? Has he smuggled these weapons into the United States? Does he have a plan to detonate these weapons in multiple American cities if Israel attacks Iran’s nuclear facilities? Dr. Hugh Cort, president of the American Foundation for Counter-Terrorism Policy and Research, believes the answer to all of these questions is yes.
Cort has assembled a body of evidence which he claims supports the view that bin Laden has a plan for an “American Hiroshima” which will be implemented in the near future. He has sent this material to various U.S. officials, including Robert S. Mueller III, director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Cort believes that the government is not doing enough to prevent an attack.
Much of his evidence centers around one Hamid Mir, a Pakistani journalist who has conducted the only interview of bin Laden after 9/11. Bin Laden told Mir that he had acquired 20 suitcase nuclear bombs from the former Soviet Union. Mir told Cort that bin Laden’s men have smuggled these bombs into the United States.
His men supposedly are waiting for bin Laden to give them the signal, then seven to ten American cities will be struck. If true it is little wonder that Iran’s leader confidently predicts that the United States will be bombed back to the Stone Age.
Bin Laden supposedly has fulfilled Islamic law by warning the United States that an attack is coming and offering a truce — convert to Islam and you will not be attacked. Refusal to convert to Islam means that an attack against America is justified. Three weeks prior to 9/11 bin Laden warned that the United States would be attacked in an unprecedented way for its support of Israel.
Already bin Laden has called for all Muslims in the United States to leave. Instead of a mass exodus of Muslims from this country, new mosques are opening every few weeks. Muslim schools also are being established, which suggests that families plan to stay here for the foreseeable future. But Yossef Bodansky, director of the Congressional Task Force on Terrorism from 1988 to 1998, has testified that bin Laden has obtained nuclear weapons.
He told Congress that “Osama has recruited former Soviet Special Forces (SPETSNAZ) soldiers to teach al-Qaida how to maintain and operate the bombs.”
Mir, by the way, has suggested that most of the nuclear weapons have been smuggled across the border from Mexico. Opponents of illegal immigration long have argued that they want the border monitored and closed for national security purposes.
Proponents of illegal immigration have maintained that opposition to it is “racist.” Clearly, opponents of illegal immigration have the better case; although if Mir is correct, the door may have been open too long.
Ronald Kessler, chief Washington correspondent for Newsmax.com, interviewed Mueller, who said that he is very concerned about bin Laden having nuclear weapons in the United States, so concerned that the FBI has surrounded mosques in 10 American cities with nuclear radiation detectors. Cort quotes Steve Coll, president of New America Foundation, as stating that these detectors cannot sense enriched uranium when it is shielded in lead. If Islamists have such bombs, no doubt they are wrapped in lead.
Cort says that Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff does not have a plan in the event that these bombs are detonated. In such a scenario real deaths will come from radiation. If people know how to avoid radiation prior to an attack, there may be many survivors.
If people can devise a radiation-proof shelter in their own homes to survive a detonation, two days later radiation is one, one-hundredth the strength of the initial blast. If people can spend three days in the shelter and then only make brief trips outside once a day, they can defeat radiation. But what credible source has warned people of the potential threat and how they can meet it?
Is all of this just alarmist talk? Has Cort missed something important which would nullify his answers? I have no idea.
It seems more than reasonable that we proceed as if it is true. If it proves to be a false alarm, what have we lost? But if Cort’s research has merit and we are prepared to handle such a situation, we could minimize its terrible impact.
When I asked some U.S. officials why no one in the government is warning people, I was told “we don’t want to unduly alarm people.” Nonsense.
I have great faith that the American people will do the right thing if properly informed. We did in the mid-1950s when told that the Soviet Union could start a nuclear war. We can do so again, but someone with credibility must tell Americans the truth.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, or as she is called on the Big Dogs blog, “the worst speaker in the history of Congress,” explained the cause of high oil prices back in 2006: “We have two oilmen in the White House. The logical follow-up from that is $3-a-gallon gasoline. It is no accident. It is a cause and effect. A cause and effect.”
Yes, that would explain why the price of oral sex, cigars and Hustler magazine skyrocketed during the Clinton years. Also, I note that Speaker Pelosi is a hotelier … and the price of a hotel room in New York is $1,000 a night! I think she might be onto something.
Is that why a barrel of oil costs mere pennies in all those other countries in the world that are not run by “oilmen”? Wait — it doesn’t cost pennies to them? That’s weird.
In response to the 2003 blackout throughout the Northeast U.S. and parts of Canada, Pelosi blamed: “President Bush and Rep. Tom DeLay’s oil-company interests.” The blackout was a failure of humans operating electric power; it had nothing to do with oil. And I’m not even “an oilman.”
But yes — good point: What a disaster having people in government who haven’t spent their entire lives in politics! That explains everything. A government official with relevant experience or knowledge about an issue is obviously a crisis of gargantuan proportions.
This must be why the Democrats are nominating B. Hussein Obama, who finished middle school three days ago and has less experience than a person one might choose at random from the audience of “American Idol.”
Announcing the Democrats’ bold new “plan” on energy last week, Pelosi said breaking into the Strategic Petroleum Reserve “is one alternative.” That’s not an energy plan. It’s using what we already have — much like “conservation,” which is also part of the Democrats’ plan.
Conservation, efficiency and using oil we hold in reserve for emergencies does not get us more energy. It’s as if we were running out of food and the Democrats were telling us: “Just eat a little less every day.” Great! We’ll die a little more slowly. That’s not what we call a “plan.” We need more energy, not a plan for a slower death.
But there’s more! Pelosi announced that the Democrats also plan to push for “an historic investment in biofuels, efficiency, conservation and the rest.” The “rest” is apparently what she called our “important and essential” investment in alternative energy.
That certainly would be historic: We would make history by throwing our money away on unproven energy boondoggles that have eaten up untold billions since the 1960s without producing a single net kilowatt of power while we all starve to death.
The proposal to use energy sources that don’t yet produce any energy is like the old New Yorker cartoon with Obama in Muslim garb — no wait, that was a different cartoon. The cartoon is: A scientist has written out his extremely complicated theory on a blackboard and is showing it to another scientist. The theory consists of numbers and characters and takes up the entire blackboard. About two-thirds of the way across, reading left to right, appear the words, “then a miracle happens,” followed by more numbers and characters.
That’s the Democrats’ plan to run cars on biofuels, solar and wind power: Then a miracle happens. The current Democratic mantra on energy is: “We can’t drill our way out of this problem.” Apparently their plan is to talk our way out of this problem.
Democrats are also alleging that the oil companies are sitting on millions of acres of oil but are refusing to drill — presumably because oil company executives hate the American people and perversely don’t want to make money. Manifestly, those acres are being explored for oil or have already come up dry.
If the Democrats really wanted oil companies to find more oil, they’d allow oil companies to drill offshore and to drill in ANWR, which we happen to know is bursting with oil.
But they don’t. They don’t want drilling. They don’t want more oil. They want humans to ride bicycles and then to die. We deserve it: We were mean to the polar bears.
It’s good to know that in the middle of a crisis, the Democrats are still liars. As long as we’re fantasizing about “alternative” energy sources, what we really need is a car that runs on Democrats’ lies.

In his very first race in Illinois he forced Alice Palmer (his mentor and friend) and others off the ballot so that he could run unopposed. It was all suumed up as the way things are done in Chicago. If you want some horrific stories, learn more about oplitics in Chicago. Obama was brought up in them.
BTW, Alice Palmer stumped for Hillary.
Alice Palmer had a bunch of illegal signatures on her ballot petition. The law said she shouldn’t be allowed on the ballot. You want to call that dictatorship? Whatever. I notice no response whatsoever on any other point. I find the “Taking control of the media” particularly amusing, since the national media will predictably go insane every time there’s an anti-Obama story to tell. I mean, seriously — after a period of weeks in which the good Reverand Wright received more airtime on all cable news channels combined than any other story, you’re telling me Obama controls the media? Come on.
Of course you are not bigots - constantly claiming you are not racist, but continually raising “he may be a Muslim” or his birth certificate. I have not seen any demands for the birth certificate of John McCain from a PUMA type. McCain was not born on US soil after all.

As for forcing Alice Palmer off the ballot, I guess this is the same one who supports Obama, the same one who took her name off the ballot?
When you speak you sound like the whacked out false prophet in “The Life of Brian” who makes sense for a few seconds and then goes bizarre and then makes a little sense and then goes bizarre and so on…
The signatures were NOT illegal. Rather, eligible people had printed their names where they should have signed their names. It was like a hanging chad scenario. Further, if organizers had not been accredited all of their signed petitions became null and void, even if all of the proper procedures had been followed.
The point to take from this is that Obama used technicalities to win a democratic nomination, which ultimately went against the spirit of organizing and engaging the citizens of his community in the political process. If he followed the democratic spirit, he would have disregarded tiny technicalities such as printed names where signatures were required. He did not. In this case, winning was more important to Obama than doing the right thing.
Finally, all of the candidates that were eliminated by this tactic, believe to this day that what he did was morally wrong, even though some support him now.
I actually am just today reading the New Yorker article about Obama (with the offending cover, which I have to admit I find more amusing the more I look at it). It appears you’re right that Obama’s backers used their knowledge of insider Chicago politics to get Alice Palmer and some minor candidates knocked off the ballot. What you aren’t saying, though, and what I had no idea about, is the backstory of that campaign. Here’s how it went, according to Ryan Lizza (the author):
1. State Senator Alice Palmer decides to run for Congress and endorses Obama as her handpicked successor to take her seat.
2. Obama runs, wins all the major Chicago libera/black Democratic endorsements.
3. Palmer’s Congressional campaign flails, she realizes she is going to lose badly, changes her mind and her backers start pressuring Obama to step aside and abandon his campaign for the State Senate, which is already well underway.
4. Obama, obviously an extremely ambitious guy, says screw that, thus splitting the Democratic/black coalition between him and Palmer.
5. His backers can tell that her last minute campaign is going to be vulnerable to a petition challenge, and they take her out.
Ruthless? Sure, but so was Palmer’s last-minute decision to go after a seat she had already publicly ceded to Obama. Bottom line, the guy is is willing to be a street fighter to win. We need that on our side if we’re going to defeat the Republican machine. That same sort of toughness is what impressed so many people about HRC this year, by the way.
Anyway, Stephen, your notion that Obama did something ethically wrong here strikes me as considerably weaker now that I know the whole story.
That’s a lovely spin on the story. It is not quite as written, and the reality is more ruthless and backstabbing than the mild-mannered Ryan Lizza has portrayed it.
Just one little thing. Alice Palmer was a mentor for Obama. She held fundraisers for him during his first campaign. Every signiture on the petition was challenged. EVERY ONE! And she was a popular Black female state senator from the same district Obama ran for. It must have been hurtful for her, but I guess, that’s just politics as usual for Chicago and Obama.

That is a ludicrous assertion about Alice Palmer. I just read the New Yorker piece so I know more about this (see my post above). She’s a big fan of his now and basically says that anyone who doesn’t like how the game is played in Chicago shouldn’t go into politics there. As I said above, I want a fighter on our side. All these notions of Obama as weak, effete, etc., are kind of funny when you actually read about him. He will take the Republicans on in a back alley if he has to and he will win.

One bonus for Barack Obama as he campaigns in Indiana is that so many friends from his home state can just drive across the state line to help him out.
Then again, it’s also a short trip for the occasional hometown pol who has been doublecrossed by Obama, such as one featured guest doing the Hoosier tour today for Obama’s opponent, Sen. Hillary Clinton.
Joining Chelsea Clinton and other women to campaign for Hillary Clinton today is Alice Palmer. She’s the former state senator who picked Obama to be her successor back in the mid-90s.
When she tried to reclaim her spot, Obama got her booted from the ballot.
The day of campaigning culminates tonight with a “Women for Hillary” rally in New Albany. The women plan to talk about Clinton’s plans for the economy, job creation and the middle class.
Palmer’s story is more familiar in Chicago than it is in Indiana, even in the northwest section of Hoosierland that consumes so much of the Chicago news media. Still, the national press has shown an interest in the early account of Obama playing hardball, and Palmer’s presence may remind some of them of the story.
We’ll likely hear more about her — and them.

Wright said in his National Press Club speech. If you believed what so many in the media and his supporters say, the principle reason to vote for him would be his promise of a different kind of politics. Rev. Wright was a friend and spiritual advisor for many years. Who would know him better outside his own family? In fact, his family doesn’t know much about him. He lived outside the country for the first ten years of his life and his father is not an American citizen. He is the first presidential candidate in over two hundred years to have a parent not born in this country. We knew where Bush, Kerry and Gore finished in college and their grades. There was no question who their parents were and their citizenship status. When he released his book “Dreams of My Father” is was not successful and when he released it the second time in 2004, it had been revised. He misrepresented the nature of his relationship with Rezko and possibly Bill Ayers. He denied hearing Rev. Wright make controversial remarks and corrected himself in his Pa. speech. He is, to my knowledge, the least wealthy presidential candidate in a very long time. And indifferent to whom? As for my “write to privacy” — I obviously hate the vote Obama made on FISA, but I still consider him a much better bet to defend the Constitution than McCain, who is a complete joke on these issues — a Bush clone.

sfhillary, I’m responding to a comment made by someone else and I’ll take a pass on the first two since I have no knowledge there. I will agree with the original comment on indifferent. Statements by those who worked with him in the Community Center in Chicago pretty much confirm this view. There isn’t a mathematical equation for indifference and people may see different things in his attitudes. Some, me included, are unnerved by the speed of his transference from a state senate to presidential candidate. We are less likely to accept his explanation of his vote for the new FISA since we have been writing senators and congressmen and the media to protest this violation of our rights from the time the truth came out about Bush circumventing the court system. It also disturbs me he contradicted himself with this vote which, as with too many other things, he made a statement of strong opposition in the beginning. He either changed his mind (why) or he never intended to vote in opposition to begin with. Now, while this in no way justifies a comparison to the Nazi Reich, many people have made that comparison to Bush based on his opinions of the Court. Civil liberties and separation of church and state don’t change overnight. It’s a steady erosion. We have had eight years to witness an alarming perversion of the constitution and what’s been lost, is hard to retrieve.

I’m a typical upscale, highly intelligent, highly informed, middle-aged family man progressive liberal white Democrat who will enthusiastically vote for Obama, would have (also enthusiastically) voted for HRC if she had won the nomination, and in general thinks it is absolutely imperative that a Democrat win the White House this fall to get our government out of the hands of the criminals who currently occupy the White House. Given the depradations of the last eight years of Bush, and McCain’s promise to extend most of what Bush has done, I find it utterly bizarre that any thinking American who cares about the Constitution would even consider not voting for the Democratic nominee. And I find the PUMAs’ justifications for hating Obama — the primary controversies, Rev. Wright, his policy changes, his relative lack of experience — utterly trivial compared to McCain’s promise to extend the Iraq War, make the Bush tax cuts for rich people (like me) permanent, appoint strict-constructionist Supreme Court judges, etc etc etc.
But no, I have no direct affiliation with the Obama campaign. I do know a few people who are involved with it, though. And no, they do not have horns or drink the blood of newborns.
