New Yorker Cover Cartoon NOT a Satire?

It is being reported today that Nicholas Kristof of the New York Times has in his possession a tape recording of an interview he once had with Barack Obama that may be very damaging to the latter’s campaign for the presidency.
The tape (and the transcript of it) stem from a February 27, 2007 visit Kristof paid to Obama’s senate offices. A column Kristof wrote based upon this interview appeared in the New York Times on March 6, 2007.
In a column he wrote this week about Obama which was published on Tuesday, Kristof once again refers to this earlier interview. Also, he has subsequently seemed to say that his editors have reviewed it in its entirety.
What may be damning about the interview, the transcript of it and—especially—the original tape recording is that Obama allegedly provided Kristof with a recitation from memory of the Muslim call to prayer in Arabic. One of Obama’s cousins in Africa has stated in the recent past that Obama was, indeed, once a Muslim. Kristof’s interview records may prove this more definitively.
Obama lived in Indonesia until he was about ten years old. He attended a Catholic school there but was allegedly enrolled as a student of the Muslim faith. Popular psychologists have maintained for decades that what happens to children during their tenth year of life stays with them most strongly for as long as they live. Obama has admitted in one of his best-selling books that he remembers vividly hearing Muslim calls to prayer when he was growing up in Southeast Asia. But what does it mean if he remembers the call in its entirety in a language, Arabic, foreign to both Americans and Indonesians?
The issue is not whether Obama was ever a Muslim. Who could blame him if his elders exposed him to Muslim influences and even mosque attendance in the largest Islamic country in the world, Indonesia, as a child? What Kristof may, however, have raised as an issue once again—and, this time, in spades—is Obama’s inability and/or unwillingness to tell us the truth about his past in Southeast Asia, Chicago or anywhere else.

I have spent a lot of time in Istanbul where my husband lived for two years. In NYC, as well, it is not uncommon to hear the call to prayer from an East Village mosque near 14th Street. You’ll also see cab drivers pull over and pray on mats occasionally. I have a great deal of respect for many different religions including Islam. Obama worried me from my first hearing of him when the rumors about his childhood began. There was much controversy over whether he was enrolled in the Catholic school as a Muslim or not. His response indicated he was lying about something. I don’t think he’s a Manchurian candidate except for the old Bush administration and their enablers in the hard line left of the Democratic party. So, he most certainly can be a liar and a friend of GWB.
You live in my world. Never been to Instanbul, but when I zip into NYC it that doesn’t matter anymore. Within 5 minutes I’m in sync with peoples from all over the world.

If Obama walked on the Hudson, people’d think he was surfing on an alligator or a dead body. It is a wonderful city still with people from all over. Manhattan has become more homogenized recently, of course. But if you know your way around, you can be seemingly anywhere. The city still has a great energy.
Obama spoke at Cooper Union, which ain’t bad. Chicago is a beef and shoulder town. It doesn’t jibe with NY, which is very direct and in-your-face. That’s why the state embraced Hillary; she was not a carpet bagger to us. Thousands of people move to NY each year, and you just have to work your ass off and get out there and meet people. She was a natural fit.
A lot of people call New Yorkers rude. Hillary was never one to mince words. Obama just seems so provincial and milquetoast. And New Yorkers think the rest of the country is backwards and gullible and rude, just for coming to our town and acting like yahoos and abusing the service and hospitality industry. Blunt speaking is a virtue in NY, and lying is time-wasting. I’d take McCain over Obama any day.

Don’t yell at me or get all huffy and self-righteous about that–that’s the way the faith works. That’s also why his Muslim stepdaddy enrolled him as a Muslim, because he knew that his daddy was one.
Now, Obama can say he was a “nominal” Muslim–a Jack Muslim, like those Jack Mormons–but he was a Muslim. When he went to Wright’s church, joined up and “accepted Christ as his personal savior” or whatever verbal nonsense people spew about worshipping invisible idols, he, in essence, RENOUNCED Islam in the eyes of Muslims. And RENOUNCING….that’s not a good thing.
This is why he’s pussyfooting around about this issue. He knows full well that “nudge wink” the Islamic world is assuming he is hiding his faith–it’s called TAQUIYYA, and in some situations, it’s perfectly acceptable to do…for example, when a Catholic priest in Spain is threatening you with a hot poker….or you want to become President of the US.
Now, the question remains–IS he “hiding his faith” or is he really one of those “committed Christians?” The Islamic world thinks he is the Taquiyya Kid–after all, didn’t that church give NOI Minister Farrakhan (and that I in NOI is for ISLAM, after all) a Lifetime Achievement Award? Wasn’t that a “signal?”
It is in Obama’s INTEREST to have it both ways–to be a Christian to American audiences, and to be the “Taquiyya Kid” in the Islamic world. It’s way better to be perceived as concealing one’s faith than RENOUNCING it….because then, in the eyes of Muslims, he becomes an APOSTATE. And in that case, he gets thrown under the Islamic Express bus–along with fellows like the Cartooning Danes, that lovely Somali born Dutch politician/atheist, and author Salman Rushdie.

He’s got to play the game, and pretend that he NEVER was a Muslim, when the truth is simple–he was born a Muslim, he practiced the faith sloppily until he was ten, he was “nothing” for a while, and then he became a Christian.

I don’t care if he is a muslim. I voted for Keith Ellison who is a muslim. No one’s religion matters to me, however when it comes to being POTUS, I need to be able to somewhat trust my President. If I cannot trust him to be honest about who he is, how can I trust his judgement on cabinet positions, etc. I will not vote for someone who is so afraid I will not accept him as who he is that he has to lie constantly. I also do think that for POTUS it may matter if he is muslim in how we are viewed by the rest of the world. While it may not be a problem with middle eastern countries, it could cause other countries not to trust this administration. This year we need to improve our image! I am not certain Bafraud can do that. In fact, I am not certain about anything with this guy and he could clear up alot if he wanted to! In fact, I will not vote for this guy because I have no idea who he is and what he believes! All I know is that he lies. Not a great quality in a person, let alone POTUS!

The point is not that there is anything wrong with being Muslim, or any other religion, for that matter.
The point is that Barack Obama probably lied about it.
If Obama’s father was a Muslim, Muslims consider that Obama was, too. If his mother enrolled him in school as a Muslim and he was taught to recite the Koran, as many Muslim children are, there is nothing wrong with that. If he subsequently decided to embrace Christianity, Muslims might not like that fact, and may consider him to be an apostate, but it’s perfectly legal for anyone living in the West to change religions.
Obama could have said that his religion was nobody’s business. He could have said that his mother exposed him to Islam because of his stepfather, but that he had never thought of himself as Muslim. But he said he had never been a Muslim and had always been a Christian. Possibly, in his heart, this is his subjective truth. But according to how others see him, if a Muslim man has a child (and Barack Obama Sr. was a Muslim) that child is also considered to be Muslim.
If a Jewish woman has a child, that child is considered to be Jewish.
Roman Catholics, and most Christian faiths, baptize infants shortly after birth, and consider them to be Christians.
It’s not a US law, but it’s how people have been classifying themselves for hundreds (and sometimes thousands) of years.

I so very vaguely remember Oprah saying that they went to the same church…and O might have talked about his Muslim background. It was just an upbeat show and Oprah loved him–it was like a pre-endorse Endorse.
Oprah also sells transcripts of her previous shows, but I am not sure if he was a headliner or a drop in guest…like he has only on for half the show.
