Happy Anniversary

Today marks the 160th anniversary of the Seneca Falls Women’s Rights Convention (two events today honor Hillary Clinton). Susan B. Anthony, one of the most renowned women from that time said, “It was we, the people, not we, the white male citizens; but we, the whole people, who formed the Union.” Amen, sister!

We’ve certainly come a long way from that time, baby - we have the right to vote, e are CEOs, doctors, lawyers, priests, rabbis, ministers, accountants…And we continue to make up a large percentage of nurses, teachers, retail help…Our sports are now funded on a par with the boys thanks to the diligent work of women in the 1970’s to raise up girls and women in sports. And we now have women represented in the US Senate and House, not to mention a number of governorships. The most qualified candidate in the presidential field this year was a woman, and she got more votes than any other candidate EVER. That is pretty remarkable.

Bill Kristol said, “White women are a problem, that’s you know - we all live with that.”

And so it is that in the 21st century, while we may have come far, we have men yelling at a US Senator, a Former First Lady of the US and Arkansas, “Iron My Shirt!” You have college kids wearing t-shirts that claim, “Bros before hos!” You have TV newscasters calling the same senator a whore, and her daughter a pimp, on national television, and when he is rebuked for it, other male commentators lash out in anger. You have a network selling nutcrackers with the female senator on top, another station having an organization on - twice - whose acronym is an incredibly derogatory term for women. You have major party candidates making sexist statements to not only his fellow candidate, who is older and far more accomplished, but to reporters and other women. And it is brushed aside.

You have rampant sexism, even misogyny, eminating from newspapers, magazines, television, and rallies. You have the female speaker of the U.S. House claim she is too busy to document the sexism that has gone on during the campaign, dismissing it, and her female colleague, out of hand.

Women athletes have to sue the Olympic Committee for not having their sport represented, though their male counterparts have theirs. But in Canada, where the Olympics will be taking place, it is illegal to discriminate on the basis of sex.* O, Canada! You rock!

Boston now has an operation designed to reduce the number of sexual predators on its subway lines with cameras, as well as involving the people to help stop these abusers. Way to go, Boston!!*

And, there is still a disparity between girls and boys in math and science in countries that do not offer equal access to education.*

There’s an “abstinence-promoting” magazine for high school girls, as well as one for boys, that presents inaccurate information as “facts,” and suggests the girls should dress “modestly.”* (*Facts taken from skirt.com, July 2008 Issue.)

So, yes, baby - we have come a long way, but we have a long way to go yet before that glass ceiling is truly good and shattered, before women are seen as full, equal human beings to men, before women stop being measured AGAINST men, with men being the standard (Anna Quindlen writes about that beautifully), before women do not have to fear for their safety when walking alone, whether in broad daylight or nightfall, before women no longer have to endure sexist jeers and attacks by our own media. Yes, we have a long way to go yet, but at least we are on the road.

Thanks to women like Susan B. Anthony, Amelia Bloomer, Lucretia Mott, and many, many others, for getting us going. Thank you for the struggles to the women in the early 1900s, some who sacrificed their very lives for us to be able to vote. To the women in the ’70’s who pushed against the restrictive standards, who fought for equality, who showed women as capable human beings who were more than the sum of their parts, I thank you. And to the men who supported us as we broke through some of the barriers.

We have more work to do, my sisters and brothers. Much, much more work to do, as this primary has shown us. But together, YES, WE CAN!!!!

Comment by Mike S | 2008-07-19 15:24:37

Too funny. You kids are backing the party that is doing everything it can to keep women down and this fool attacks Obama. It’s not Obama that wants to overturn Roe. It’s not Obama that’s against equal pay. It’s not Obama that’s against insurance companies covering contraceptives as well as Viagra.

Nope, that’s your boy McCain.

And Maliki’s comments about the 16 month timeline must be killing you Republicans. Just another example of why your boy McCain is on the wrong end of everything.

Comment by Northwest rain | 2008-07-19 15:47:08

Oh yes Obama is so in support of women’s rights that he pays his female staffers LESS than he pays his male staffers. Oh yes He does!

And then McCain has more female staffers and he pays them very well!!

Compare the actions of Obama and McCain — I choose McCain.

My first choice is Hillary — but the DNC has chosen snObama - so my response to the DNC and Obamabutts

of course you do. You don’t care about women or Roe.

And your daughters will thank you. As will the rabid right who want to keep women down, like Billy Krystol.

But thanks for showing your true colors.

Farakhan, Anti-American terrorists Ayers & Dohrn, MEchelle, Wright, Moss, convicted felons, Rezko, Auchi, Alsamare and his Islamic Sharia women in veils loving relatives can all go under the bus.

Comment by NOBama in August | 2008-07-19 18:05:42

Mike, abortion is but one of hundreds of issues that women deal with in this society.

Also, McCain is not going to overturn Roe vs Wade, so don’t threaten us with that.

Comment by Ted | 2008-07-19 18:22:35

That is the truly scary part. You folks choose to ignore his stated position on abortion.

Obviously he will not overturn Roe - the prez is not in a position to do that. But in all likelihood, his nominees for the SCOTUS will. Understand the Court is a mere one vote away from doing right now. This is reality.

So if you choose to base your vote on the fact tthat Obama has more male senior staffers than women and thus his pay scales are skewed toward men (if he replaced three top male staffers with women, his pay stats would flip the other way), sure, go for it. NARAL has scored Obama at 100% for every year he has been in the Senate. McCain? For the last six years, he has received 0%. That’s right. Zero. He has voted the wrong way on choice issues every single friggin time. and Obama has been on the right side every time. But go ahead and pretend McCain supports women’s rights, even though those who track such things as a profession disagree with you 100%.

Comment by NOBama in August | 2008-07-19 18:32:09

I will say it again abortion is only one issue out of many that women are concerned with.

Comment by NOBama in August | 2008-07-19 18:34:12

So if you choose to base your vote on the fact tthat Obama has more male senior staffers than women and thus his pay scales are skewed toward men …

Exactly. Discrimination at it’s worst.

Comment by Ted | 2008-07-19 18:44:52

OK; keep i mind he has six total. Or at least that was the case for the five month period of time when the data was collected that everyone is referencing. So, if he swapped out two men for women, he would be even. So you are saying had two people been hired of the opposite sex, you would vote for Obama?

Obviously you will decide how you see fit, but when dealing with such small numbers, I don’t think a pattern of discrimination is revealed.

In any event, if abortion does not matter, can you name an issue that does matter where you feel McCain is more in line with traditional Democratic values than Obama?

Ted,

It is not just about abortion. It’s about having another unqualified person in the position of president.

I have lived in Illinois most of my life. At age 12 I was encouraging my mother to vote for Paul Douglas’s re-election to the Senate against Charles Percy.

As far as the SCOTUS is concerned, we lost it when former Illinois senator Alan “The Pal” Dixon voted to confirm Clarence Thomas. The other Illinois senator, the late Paul Simon, said that he was giving the benefit of the doubt to the American people and voted against the Thomas confirmation, while Dixon voted for it saying that he was giving Thomas the benefit of the doubt. (Think of how much different things would be if there wasn’t a Clarence Thomas to vote against Al Gore in the 2000 decisions.)

In terms of character, Obama is an accomodator like Dixon was. It is good to be bi-partisan only when it benefits your constitutents. Paul Simon understood that. Obama has not stuck his neck out which is why I consider him an accomodator.

In 2006, Illinois had a primary in March and the governor was at the top of the ticket. The chairman of the Cook County board was up for re-election. His name was John Stroger and he was being challenged by Forest Claypool. Obama had been sworn into the Senate the previous year, 2005.

Obama was tacitly supporting Claypool who is white. He did not openly endorse Claypool. Stroger was black. A week before the primary Stroger suffered a stroke, but the family did not inform the public that the stroke was a major one and he was completely debilitated.

Stroger won the primary, and during the summer the family arranged for Todd Stroger to replace his father on the ballot for the general election.

Obama did endorse Todd who has not cleaned up the county government. On July 1, 2008 sales taxes increased and now the city of Chicago has the highest sales taxes in the U.S.

An Obama presidency means that we will continue to pay for incompetancy in ways unknown.

I hope in August the kool-aid will have worn off and Sen. Clinton will be the nominee. There is no official nominee until the convention votes.

I have lived in Illinois most of my life. At age 12 I was encouraging my mother to vote for Paul Douglas’s re-election to the Senate against Charles Percy. I will not vote for McCain, and I will not support any democrat who supports Obama.

He has no record for us to judge. He is a loose cannon that will implode. It’s just a matter of time.

Amy, I’d ask that you make one correction (and you can even delete this post if you then need to).
You wrote,
You have TV newscasters calling the same senator a whore, and her daughter a pimp, on national television,”

Actually, I believe the newscasters were calling HILLARY the “pimp”; the phrase used was “pimping out her daughter”. Obviously, Chelsea couldn’t be the pimp, as she was the referenced daughter.

Comment by MrMike | 2008-07-19 14:45:23

If you look at the accusations of Hillary ready to do anything to get the nomination you could surmise that they are calling her a whore.

Comment by Diana | 2008-07-19 15:14:21

And here is a link to one of the many articles saying Hillary had pimped out Chelsea.

MSNBC’s David Shuster for suggesting the Clinton campaign had “pimped out” 27-year old Chelsea by having her place phone calls to Democratic Party superdelegates on her mother’s behalf. Wolfson called the comment “beneath contempt” and disgusting.

http://tinyurl.com/5jqxq6

Comment by Ted | 2008-07-19 18:25:37

Yes, and a blogger here said Obama had pimped out his family. But I guess that’s ok, since it is a slur against Obama.

Comment by JozefAL | 2008-07-20 00:39:59

Way to make your point completely meaningless, you Obama shill.
Comparing a NEWSCASTER–a FULL-FLEDGED MEMBER OF THE FOURTH ESTATE–to a “blogger”. Yeah, that’s entirely the same thing.
My POINT (which you obviously missed) was merely to correct a false impression that Amy had left. What went unsaid was the fact that IF that same newscaster/pundit had made a similar claim that “Obama was pimping out” either Michelle or his daughters, that newsman would have been out on his ass in a heartbeat. OTOH, many so-called progressives (the ones so supportive of Obama) went ballistic when Hillary demanded that MSNBC take some punitive action over the comment.

i guess Seneca Falls wasn’t worth commenting on. would luv to be a female in your clan bud.

Comment by Ted | 2008-07-19 18:36:25

If you are making the case that the word whore is gender-specific, you need to do a bit of research on the subject.

Comment by wry | 2008-07-19 16:48:26

Sorry to go off on another tangent but this excellent post was done by Denise at SavagePolitics and it is just fantastic.

It was in response to someone saying a civilian national security force that Obama has been espousing would be all right.

PLEASE READ IT:

July 19th, 2008 at 1:06 pm
“I find this stuff wildly amusing.”

And I find this comment so offensive it leaves me speechless. Not, however, surprised. I have come to expect such tactics from Obama supporters.

So why do I bother to post a reply?

Because I believe your ultimate goal is not to engage in responsible, well-reasonsed discourse, but rather to simply throw non-Obama supporters off base, going off into tangents, where we start nit-picking instead of remaining true to the subject at hand.

And the subject at hand is Obama’s civilian national security force. I will not honor the concept by using initial caps.

People - not just Grant, but all who read here today - I urge you most sincerely to consider the ramifications of electing Obama. I urge you to consider how your everyday lives will “change.” Start with the first video posted above. Let’s not even digress into the many other issues. Let’s just stick with this one concept. CIVILIAN NATIONAL SECURITY FORCE.

Who is to comprise this force? Volunteers? Conscripts? The best our society can offer, or will the members be culled from “the dregs of society?” Has this force already been activated via those 3,200 young people Obama is paying to travel through 17 states over a six-week period? READ OBAMA’S WEB SITE. Don’t just take my word for it. HE IS TRAINING THEM. For community service? Or for something else? Well, how about they are in training as the future CNSF?

Can’t get a job (or haven’t really tried)? No problem, join the CNSF and we’ll even give you free housing (although you may have to re-locate to District 11 in Chicago…)

What will be the specific responsibilities of your new job? Well, you will report back to us anyone who uses terms like “Black Hole” or “Devil’s Food Cake.” At first you will merely write them up, much like a traffic ticket, and they pay a fine. (Fines to fund your free housing in District 11). But the second offense - and you’ll know when one is committed, because you’ll be “monitoring” the offender - we’ll give you carte blanche to invade their privacy, following them around if need be - on the second offense, you will be able to make a CNSF arrest (previously known as a “citizen’s arrest”) and haul the hapless offender’s ass down to the local CNSF office. And there will be one on every corner, by the way - they are going to use those 600 Starbuck’s stores being closed…

To the hapless offender: You will not have the right to an attorney. It doesn’t matter if you say anything at all - the CNSF will ensure it manufactures something that can be used against you to acquire a conviction. And when you’re incarcerated for three months, wondering “What did I do?” The answer will be…

You either took a stand for freedom of speech, and did NOT vote for Obama, or you didn’t bother to vote at all. With regard to the latter, there are a lot of you out there. Your candidate isn’t the nominee this time around, so you’ll wait until 2012. Or you have never voted Republican, and most certainly can’t cross party lines, or….use whatever excuse you wish. The bottom line is - electing our next president is YOUR responsibility as a FREE citizen in - last I checked - a FREE nation. Why are you throwing that vote away? IT IS EXACTLY WHAT THE DNC WANTS YOU TO DO! Donna Brazile even said as much: “Stay home…”

Stay home, so that they can push Obama into the White House without your dissenting vote - a vote that doesn’t count because you didn’t bother to vote at all.

For those like Grant who may find such a scenario “wildly amusing,” please read the link posted above on just how the Gestapo started. “Can’t happen here?” you say. “This is America!” you protest. Well, as I’ve posted before, there are six million dead Jews who may have thought the same thing, and one million non-Jews as well.

Think I’ve gone over the edge making such a comment? Well, read about the protests that have already occurred by Jewish voters. Read about the concern Israel has over an Obama presidency. Like it or not, Israel is the one nation in the Middle East standing between us and a crazed fundamentalist mindset.

And now I’ve broken my own rule and digressed far afield ….

Evil is rarely blatant, people. It is insidious. It begins to erode the fabric of society in small ways - like the proposed CNSF - or like the worst computer virus imaginable. It slowly eats its way through well-constructed barriers, gaining momemtum, until it is unstoppable.

We have the chance - and the moral obligation - to stop this insidious virus now, in this election. I, for one, have little doubt that my name, address, unlisted phone, fast food preferences and sock size are all on a pre-CNSF list somewhere. The Daily Kos inferred as much a few months ago. Another poster received death threats recently for having set up an anti-Obama web site. The friend of another poster on this site canceled her plans to protest in Denver for fear of being arrested.

Not just curtailing - but eradicating - our freedom of speech is the goal of the CNSF, IMHO. This is real, people, and it is happening NOW. Not later, after the election, but right this very moment. If you don’t want to post comments for fear of being on someone’s list, fine. But I’m way past that point.

And freedom has never been preserved or won with silence. It is preserved by taking OVERT (but legal) action. It is preserved by speaking out and making your voice (and your vote) count. It is preserved by taking a stand for what you know is right.

And what you know is WRONG. The civilian national security force has all the hallmarks of a 21st-century Gestapo.

And all of the above said, could I be mistaken? Gee, could I possibly have mis-connected dots? Of course. But I am not willing to take that chance with this election. Until November 5, I have the freedom to post commentary like this. Some will agree with the comments, others will razz me.

But I’d rather be razzed than arrested, and so my vote is for McCain, who knows a thing or two about incarceration.

Thank you, JohnE for the post. I have been saying similar things to friends. Repeatedly. If Hillary is trashed at the convention, I will vote for McCain. Read Tarpley’s book on BO. Am now reading Dutch writer, Geert Mak’s “In Europe” which covers the history of Europe from the late 19th and to the last of the 20th century.

The parallels between America now and Germany then are eerie. The economic crises, the people’s spiritual malaise, the jaded youth seeking meaning & relevance and the rise/success of fascism among the tiny, supremely wealthy elites are more than food for thought. It is a call to action. BO’s CNSF stinks of Gestapo. We have already experienced the crude thuggery of the Obamabots. The CNSF is what’s next. It started small in Germany, too. Just an idea. Just words. And it worked.

If we do not fight back and speak out, we will be lost. Our Democracy, will be an illusion. All the legal mechanisms are in place(thanks to W, and a corrupt Congress)to utilize those 600 detention centers Halliburton built. Sure it’s crazy stuff but it is here, ready to be sprung on us. Free speech zones? Illegitimate nomination/coronation in a football stadium? Barak Obama is a dangerous sociopath. Conspiracy? You betcha’ at the highest levels of corporate power who done bought themselves a candidate.

I will never stay home(they want us to). I will vote for John McCain since he is a known factor. Obama is an unknown unknown. He must be thrown back into the Chicago swamp from whence he crawled!

“Bill Kristol said, ‘White women are a problem, that’s you know - we all live with that.’”

As obnoxious as Bill Kristol shows himself to be here, he seems to be quite a bit less obnoxious than his father Irving, who Wikipedia identifies as the founder of Neoconservatism.

I remember sometime in the 90s listening to Irving on one of those political panels and referring to the Democratic constituency as “those people” (men and women both) in a manner just dripping with superiority and disdain and with an expression to match. It made a very distinct, clear, and lasting impression on me.

Of course, having those kind of supporters does not reflect well on John McCain. But, at the same time, it should send up all sorts of warning flags to “those people” especially the superdelegate types.

Obama not only has a record of putting down the “clinging, rural provincials” himself, he is now bending over backwards to reel in the same constituencies that twice elected Bush.

That leaves an awful lot of us out in the cold.

WAKE UP SUPERDELEGATES….before it’s too late.

Also, wake up John McCain. Getting rid of Phil Gramm was a good thing. Be careful of who else you let in the inner circle. People are paying attention to more than just flashy ostentatious campaign rallies.

Comment by wry | 2008-07-19 16:50:31

Actually Kristol was rather respectful of Senator Clinton this time around. I think he himself was surprised to find himself admiring her.

AMEN! You are exactly right! Our best option is that we don’t let the “progessives” treat us like things/shit/slaves.

Women got the right to vote 50 YEARS AFTER Black men. But from the media and complaining, one would think women have had some great entitlement and been pushing Black men around forever.

Whoopi says women could never understand. Right. Because women haven’t had to struggle for civil rights AT ALL.

I guess the difference is, Hillary didn’t make her campaign all about being a woman. She tried to leave her gender out of it.

“women haven’t had to struggle for civil rights at all” HA, no honey? and what do you believe they have done? Complaining?

I think Christy was being sarcastic in that statement.

I was an Edwards supporter who voted for Senator Clinton when Mr. Edwards dropped out of the race. However, I disagree with you that Clinton “was the most qualified candidate in the presidential field this year.” Though far from the best candidate, and probably not the individual who would have made the best president, Bill Richardson, given his breadth of experience, was the most qualified candidate in either party.
