Obama’s Dress Code for Sweetie

According to Politico’s Carrie Budoff Brown, who is accompanying Obama on his trip to the Middle East and Europe, Obama’s campaign sent out a “dress code” that especially targeted female reporters as to the appropriate attire while traveling in Israel and Jordan.
Obama press told to cover up, not wear green
No green. That is the color of Hamas. Also no nail polish, a limited amount of jewelry, covered shoulders and arms, closed-toed shoes, and stockings for women. (Do they make stockings anymore?) Women must also be prepared to cover their heads.
Two points:
First, Obama fails to assume that female reporters (or “Sweeties as he calls them) might just know a thing or two about the world and its cultural traditions. These women’s world travel experience likely far exceeds his own.
Second, Jordan’s culture is far more limiting for women, but a look through online photos reveals a range of female dress (e.g., short sleeves, jewelry, and no head scarves) especially among younger women. But Israel? Huh? Much of Israel is almost like being home again.
I am not against respecting people’s views and customs while visiting other lands, especially their sacred sites. But, considerable concern already exists about how Obama views women, and this autocratic paternalism seems to be playing out once again.

Firsst of all, I’d be interested in knowing whether this guideline being issued is just standard protocol for an overseas trip. We’re assuming it isn’t because we’ve never heard it before. I’d just like to know what the Clinton camp said, if anything, during the 90s. Hopefully someone will ask that question.
Otherwise, the medium is the message. This is a presidential campaign telling women how to dress. The fact of what they say isn’t so important as the fact that they said anything at all.

I’ve been to several Muslim countries - Israel, Egypt, and Morocco, though not Jordan. While it’s good to be respectful of their culture and not overexpose. You wouldn’t believe the Western tourists who wear spaghetti straps, short shorts, and mini skirts! That’s just plain rude. But most natives will tell you that it’s just as bad to wear headscarves and such to pretend to fit in. You end up looking foolish. Though foolish seems to be the operative mode for Barry & Co.
Israel is not a muslim country. There are Palestinian citizens of Israel. Some Palestinian’s are in fact Christian and not Muslim at all, but Israel is a Jewish state.

My roomate my freshman year of college was Jewish. She, like many young Jewish Americans go to Israel in the summer to work on Kabutz’s (working farms) with other young people. Kids in Israel who are not Hasidic dress just like other Western kids, just like you mentioned
