I Don’t Recall…

OK, let me say, I was going to write about another article I saw at memeorandum.com in the LA Times entitled, “Obama’s Path To Presidency Is Far From Clear,” by Peter Nicholas. It IS a good article, though he certainly leaves out some things, but what he DOES include is that Obama is loosing steam in some of the states in which he led McCain, but has now fallen behind. It is an interesting read, so I commend it to you when you get a chance.

But what I do not recall Obamessiah talking about while he was in Iraq was a story CNN covered entitled, “Gays In Iraq Terrorized By Threats, Rape, Murder.” Maybe I missed it, but I do not recall him mentioning this issue at ALL when he was in Iraq on our time getting his photo ops. Oh, he would do whatever his handlers told him to do would LOOK good for him, but deal with real issues?? C’mon, he doesn’t have time for things like that! Sheesh - there’s only one of The One, after all!!

Ahem. As you might guess, life for gays is a far, far cry from, say New York City (which has the largest gay population in the USA):

Kamal was just 16 when gunmen snatched him off the streets of Baghdad, stuffed him in the trunk of a car and whisked him away to a house. But the real terror was about to begin.

The men realized he was gay, Kamal said, when he took his shirt off and they saw that his chest was shaved.

“They told me to take off my clothes to rape me or they would kill me immediately. This moment was the worst moment in my life,” he said, weeping as he spoke of the 2005 ordeal.

“I was watching them taking off their clothes, preparing to rape me. I did not know what to do, so I started shouting loudly, ‘Please do not do that! I will ask my family to give you whatever you want.’ ” Watch the tormented life of gays in Iraq.

His pleas went unheeded. “The other two kidnappers took off my clothes by force, and, at that time, I saw them as three dirty animals trying to tear my body apart.”

His story continues:

He was held for 15 days, released only after his family paid a $1,500 ransom. He was raped every day. Only once, he said, was he allowed to talk to his family during captivity. “I told my family that I was beaten by them, but I did not dare to tell my family that I was raped by them. I could not say it, it’s too much shame.”

This is just one man, I understand. And really, Obama, despite his (unfounded) claims to be a big supporter of LGBT rights (just in case there is any question, he is NOT). But, the fear there is real, and founded. This article is pretty powerful, so I present the rest of it to you below:

CNN spoke with Kamal, now 18, and his 21-year-old friend Rami about what it’s like to be gay in Iraq. Coming out as gay is not easy in any country, but to do so in Iraq could mean a death sentence or torture.

The two men rarely show feelings toward each other in public. They spend a lot of time in Internet cafes in Baghdad, surfing gay chat rooms and seeking contacts with other gay men in Iraq and elsewhere.

Since the fall of Saddam Hussein in 2003, the situation for gays and lesbians in Iraq has deteriorated. Ridiculed under Hussein, many now find themselves the targets of violence, according to humanitarian officials.(Emphasis mine.)

Lesbians are also victims of harassment and violence, but not nearly as often as gay men.

It’s unknown how many homosexuals have been killed by militias in the lawless streets of Iraq’s cities, but some Web sites post pictures of Iraqis they say were killed for being gay.

One photo on the Iraqi Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender site shows a group of men standing around three male bodies sprawled on a street, blood pouring from their heads. “Gay Iraqi victims of the police and death squads,” the site says.

A U.N. report on human rights in Iraq reinforces the accusations of violence. Although gays are supposed to be protected by law in Iraq, it says, they face extreme brutality.

“Armed Islamic groups and militias have been known to be particularly hostile toward homosexuals, frequently and openly engaging in violent campaigns against them,” the report said, adding that homosexuals have been murdered.

“Militias are reportedly threatening families of men believed to be homosexual, stating that they will begin killing family members unless the men are handed over or killed by the family,” it said.

The report was issued at the end of 2006 and is the last U.N. study to touch on the subject.

Human rights experts say homosexuals are targeted for cultural reasons as well.

“Gay men and lesbians in Iraq face a lot of risks right now, because homosexuality is sometimes interpreted by people in Iraq as being a Western import,” said Scott Portman with the Heartland Alliance, a group that promotes human rights worldwide. “So they can sometimes be targeted by insurgent groups or militias, in part, because of animosity toward the West and, in part, because homosexuality is not well-accepted in Iraqi society.”

He added, “the biggest threats right now are from militia organizations, who will attack and actually sometimes kill gay men and women.”

Kamal and Rami say the dangers are all too real in Baghdad — and they live in secrecy not to shame their families.

“I would rather commit suicide than allow my family to find out I am gay,” Rami said.

Kamal said he often pretends to have girlfriends in social settings and tells his friends he’s dating girls. “I am also careful with the way I dress — not to show them that I am gay, especially my family.”

What would his family do if they found out?

“They will force me to give it up, and I cannot do that,” he said. “The ‘normal’ people cannot live in Iraq. Imagine how the life is for gays.”

Rami added, “I do not know why people hate gays even though so many have this tendency. But still they hate it.”

Homosexuality is a touchy subject for many Iraqis. When CNN asked Iraqis in Baghdad how they felt about homosexuals, we found intolerance to be widespread.

One man said he considers gays no different from “criminals and terrorists.” Another claimed that homosexuality was “illegal under Islamic law, and [gays] should be punished by law like criminals.”

Rami said he once fell in love with a man who was part of the Mehdi Army, a Shiite insurgent group loyal to the radical anti-American cleric Muqtada al-Sadr.

Their relationship eventually soured.

“One day he told me he would come over to my house and kill me in front of my family,” Rami said. “I told him I would come outside and be killed in the street because I do not want my family to find out I am gay.”

Both men hope to escape Iraq. They say their ideal destination would be San Francisco, California. For now, both of them keep their feelings secret.

Kamal is still tormented by what happened to him nearly three years ago.

“During my sleep, I only see nightmares, and I start crying. My family thought it was because they were beating me.”

He paused. “Only my close friend Rami knows about this secret.”

A video is also available HERE.

Like I said above, I don’t recall Obama saying word one about this issue, but I am not the least bit surprised by that. I am more surprised that CNN actually did some real investigative journalism, to tell you the truth, something sorely lacking these days. At any rate, this is one of the pieces that gets lost in all the hoopla, in all of the grandstanding. But these people’s lives are actually at stake there, and we are the ones who opened that door. It is up to us to close it, fix it, make it right. You can bet Senator Clinton would. Will Senator Obama? I think we all know the answer to that question…

Talk about losing steam….has anyone seen this?

Comment by CJ | 2008-07-25 23:39:00

Sorry I am new at this. The lik will not post. It is an AP article stating that the DNC stripped a Wisconsin delegate of her vote because she is supporting McCain. She was a Hillary supporter.

Comment by CJ | 2008-07-25 23:47:55

Here’s the article:

Wis. Democrats oust delegate over McCain support By RYAN J. FOLEY, Associated Press Writer
Fri Jul 25, 5:07 PM ET

Wisconsin Democrats on Friday ousted a delegate to their national convention for saying she would vote for Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain in November.

Embarrassed by a defection in their ranks, the Wisconsin Democratic Party’s administrative committee voted 23-0 to strip Debra Bartoshevich of her status as a delegate to the Denver convention next month.

Bartoshevich was elected by party activists as a pledged delegate for Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton from the 1st Congressional District in southeastern Wisconsin. But after Clinton dropped out of the race, Bartoshevich told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel she would support McCain over Democratic Sen. Barack Obama.

The June comments from Bartoshevich, a 41-year-old nurse and mother of two from Waterford, were seized on by the McCain campaign as evidence of his appeal to former Clinton backers. Within hours, the Wisconsin Democratic Party passed a resolution at its state convention supporting a challenge of her credentials with the national committee.

The party’s rules and bylaws committee said the state party could decide the matter, clearing the way for Friday’s vote. Committee members agreed Bartoshevich had lost her privilege to be one of the state’s 92 Democratic delegates because of her comments and affiliation with “Citizens for McCain,” a branch of his campaign designed to recruit independents and Democrats.

During a teleconference before the vote, Bartoshevich asked the committee to allow her to attend the convention as a delegate for Clinton. She noted that she donated her time and money to Clinton and still believes the former first lady is the best candidate.

She said she made the comments backing McCain during an emotional time shortly after Clinton dropped out of the race and as a first-time delegate was unfamiliar with party rules. She said she had not decided who to ultimately support and was still open to backing Obama if he won her over. “I’d like to go to the convention and listen,” she said.

She said her sister was a McCain supporter who signed her up for “Citizens for McCain.”

“You reached right back and hugged them. I have a problem with that,” committee member Dottie LeClaire responded.

The committee accepted a challenge that stated Bartoshevich violated rules requiring delegates to support the party’s nominee and be faithful to the party. Bartoshevich will be replaced by Marilyn Nemeth of Racine, who finished second to Bartoshevich in the delegate election earlier this year.

This disgusts me. I first read about this at Riverdaughter’s The Confluence. I wrote a letter to the Wisconsin Democrats asking them not to strip Bartoshevich of her right to vote for Clinton at the convention. This is another way the Democrats are attempting to squash any dissent among Clinton supporters. It’s Obama or the highway. Bartoshevich has every right to serve as a delegate at the convention regardless of who she decides to vote for in November. The Democratic Party is ridiculous. I hope that Bartoshevich joins PUMA and possibly speak on a NoQuarter radio show someday. What happened to her was embarrassing and unfair.

He won’t mention the assassination and torture of gays. Nothing in it for him.

And yet Donna Brazile who is a lesbian has helped him get this far by rigging the primary season.

Cognitive Dissonance — Donna the racist must be taking a pill for CD.

Comment by DisenfranchisedVoter | 2008-07-25 23:51:47

Donna Brazile is a lesbian? It doesn’t surprise me in the least but I never heard anything about her sexuality or personal relationships.

She should be more ashamed of herself that she is backing a man simply because they share the same skin color even though Clinton is a much more passionate advocate for LGBT rights.

Unfortunately, O has a problem taking the occasional photo op with anyone who is gay. He did this with the mayor of SF, Newsome last year. Repugnant!

Comment by imustprotest | 2008-07-26 00:16:56

I don’t think Newsome is gay…he just supports gay marriage.

Comment by Clinton Fan | 2008-07-26 01:29:27

That made it worse…he didn’t want any of that “gay support by association” getting on him.

It was apparent, too. Newsome had gone to no small effort to support the guy, and he was pissed off about it.

Newsome isn’t gay–he got caught cheating on his TV presenter wife with a woman who I think worked for the city…

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2008-07-26 07:50:28

Actually, Obama asked Newsome to do a fundraiser for him, and would not allow a photo. How abt THEM apples?!?! HOW is it this uy got so far? Oh, yeah - right - the fix is in by the DNC (or should I say RDNC since Obama is looking at a Rep for Veep? Again.).

Obama doesn’t give a f*** about the gays. He just sees them as an “interest group.”

HRC showed up to HRC (the other HRC) events. And her “pimped out” daughter went to gay bars.
Screw Obama.

At least we have always known how McCain feels about us gays so there is no confusion.

Comment by Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy | 2008-07-26 07:53:12

Yes, and then HRC, the organization, stabbed her in the back and endorsed OBAMA in June. They had EVERY opportunity to endorse her throughout the season, talked abt what a stalwart advocate she was, but wouldn’t commit. I canceled my membership with them. Turncoats. Like Obama is going to do ANYTHING fo rthe LGBT community.

“Obama’s Path To Presidency Is Far From Clear,” by Peter Nicholas.

from the link at the beginning of this article –

Yes this too is a good read — the writer managed to repeat the Obama lies — raised by a single mother and his poor grandparents and how he had to “work” his way through school.

Mention of the disgust women feel for Obama — but no mention of PUMA.

Nicholas is good a repeating the Obama camp lies — I guess he wants to make sure he has access just in case Bamaling “wins”.

The gays I know do NOT like BOBO — but they adore Hillary. There is so much respect for Hillary from these guys — most have really suffered the prejudice of the “straight” community. What they’ve also told me is that a whole lot of men who appear to be straight — are NOT. Some openly question Obama’s sexual orientation. One of my good friends “R” said — now you be sure to blog that on your political blogs! So for him — I am telling you want he is hearing from the gay community.

Northwest Rain — Obama Magical Mystery tour has not worked for him because we wonder why Obama is trying to impress the world when he has not caught on with Americans. He is presumptuous and arrogant and cold. He doesn’t connect with the average American because he appears to only care to impress and excite people he hasn’t yet met in places he hasn’t yet been. We are comfortable with McCain because he is one of us. He is a real American — who loves this country as we do. If he were introduced in Berlin he would be proud to say he was an American while Obama calls himself a Citizen of the World.

Comment by fif | 2008-07-26 08:35:01

The front page of the NYTimes, which I don’t read anymore because it’s such a shameless Obama promoter, said:

Obama, Vague on Issues, Is a Crowd-Pleaser in Europe.”

Says it all, doesn’t it? When, exactly, does this guy plan to be SPECIFIC about issues? It’s all a Pepsi-Co.-type ad. campaign c/o former adman Axelrod. The world has become MTV obsessed. The good news is: people do not necessarily vote accordingly. He outspent Hillary 2/3/4:1 and as the primaries continued, she kept beating him in all the large swing states. The average American will not trust this phony display with no substance. When the get into the voting booth, they will vote for someone mature, that they can trust, even if the policies are not a match.

If he really is a self loathing gay man in disguise we can be double damned sure that he’ll do everything in his power to discriminate against us gay folks. They all do the same damned thing. Obama being gay would really be the worst case scenario for gay people in my opinion. By having people like Donnie McClurkin on his campaign trail he already has legitimized viewing members of the GLBT community as less than human. Besides every good fascist needs a powerless, helpless group of people to abuse to maintain power. Wanna bet what group gets first go at it?

The deal about supposedly-straight men raping a gay man has NOTHING to do with sex and EVERYTHING to do with POWER. Just like most men who rape women are NOT committing the act for sexual pleasure, men who rape other men are not looking for pleasure; they’re in it to punish or humiliate (or even terrorize) their victims.
In prison situations (or, in fact, other all-male institutions), gay men–whether they self-identify as gay or are merely perceived to be gay–will be targeted by other inmates. Sometimes, the rapists might derive some pleasure from the act but pleasure is almost never a consideration (an inmate might offer himself to become a victim’s “protector” or “bodyguard”, but the victim is generally doing a trade-off–being raped by one man on a regular basis rather than being raped by many men on a random basis; there’s also the problem that such a victim may end up being passed around, or “sold off”, if the “protector” needs favors from other inmates).

We’re “hateful” because we think that acolytes need to put down the bong and look at the load of crap they’ve bought in their Hope/Change/Bullshit candidate.

“OMG” indeed.

Oh, and if we’e so “lunatic fringe,” Irene, what the hell are YOU doing here? What are you worried about, HMMM?

Must be something wrong with YOU if you waste your time hectoring the “lunatic fringe,” eh? Do you beat up homeless people, too? Do you point and laugh at people with cerebral palsy? If we’re so far out there, and so “off center” and in such a tiny, minority “fringe,” why do you NEED to come here and get all snarky, huh?

That certainly says a lot about you, doesn’t it–none of it terribly good, either.

Go away, little girl–go pull wings off butterflies. Even though you’re probably an overweight, pimpled, twenty-something fat boy, unemployed, living in Mom’s basement, and still getting an allowance. Stop telegraphing your real fear by posting here–your efforts to look down your nose (would that be a garlic nose, or some other type?) well, that’s having the opposite effect, you see.

Bots are fascists and bullies and thugs from what I see, who make it a mission to go out and bludgeon–figuratively–others they have contempt for; it’s nothing but brown-shirt thuggery of “the other.” They are literally nothing but bullies. There is a very thin line between bullies who mock or attack others they perceive as weak or vulnerable or ‘fringe’ [like the men who kidnap and rape gay men in Iraq] and those who constantly troll blog sites to bully those who don’t follow their demands to support Barack Obama.

With all the Obama supporters threatening Clinton supporters for backing McCain and/or questioning Obama’s qualifications, you need to go back to the Obama websites to witness the lunatic fringe.

It is because to them we were just numbers. I mean George Bush won so they have good reason to think we are ignorant. Unfortunately, our demographic has grown. No longer can we be classified as the rascal majority.

Think Hillary will consider Obama for VP?

Donnie McClurkin. The guy that “fixes” gay people. Obama appeared publicly with him. Yet some gay bloggers will give Obama a free pass on this and other GLBT issues.

To me it’s the same as Obama appearing with an anti- African American (AA) promoter and AA’s making excuses for him or her.

Comment by Clinton Fan | 2008-07-26 03:49:31

Kirbyjon Caldwell appeared as well. And he’s even MORE INTERESTING, if that were possible, than Donnie “Pray Away The Gay” McClurkin.

Google the guy–KIRBYJON CALDWELL. Fascinating fellow.

Kirbyjon runs anti-gay camps, a version of the “pray away the gay” but sorta like gay rehab.

His ministry is outta TEXAS!

What else do we know about Kirbyjon? Aside from the fact that he’s a screaming Queen of Denial, himself, and a “reverend” that is?

Why, he attended the GOP convention!

He’s a personal, spiritual advisor to … GEORGE BUSH!

Oh, wait…there’s MORE!

He was the minister who performed the wedding of Jenna Bush and her honey, the assistant to Karl Rove down there at the Prarie Chapel Pigfarm!

And he’s on TEAM OBAMA! Backing him, supporting him, and singing his praises!

Doesn’t that seem a little fishy, hmmmmm?

Comment by candymarl | 2008-07-26 04:07:35

Oh snap! Obama is looking more like GWB every day.

Caldwell has been a staunch supporter of George Bush. So, yes, it is interesting that he is supporting Obama.

AND, don’t forget Obama’s other BFF, IL state senator and minister, James Meeks. He is ACTIVELY anti-gay. Oh, and Roland Martin of CNN attends Meeks’ church. I kid you not. You may recall HIS cheerleading for Obama.

Wait, there’s more - Meeks is involved with an organization to fight against the separation of church and state. Another group in that organization? James Dobson’s Focus on the Family. Yep, they are all working together.

Like one OP ED blogger at the Political Machine (aol)said. “Obama could kill and eat a kitten on the White House lawn and still get elected.” Or words to this effect. Right TC? I know you are reading these bloggs and so are your associates over there.

They come over here to get material to use and twist and spin for Obama. I think they also are gathering peoples emails or IP ,(from the aol site) of those who are against Obama to pass on to Obama thugs.

Maybe use a fake IP when you visit there and a throw away email for your own protection. Things are spinning out of control.

Donnie “Needy, Self-Hating Bottom” McClurkin is The Sasquatch’s favorite singer. Her husband told this to the audience at The Change Gospel-Hatefest via video link-up.
At the end of this “Concert”, The Lady Miss Donnie launched and lisped into a half-hour tirade about the evils of Homosexuality and how she had been (snicker) delivered from this sin.
Down-Low Barry had been warned about McClurkin by various GLBT groups. He chose to ignore them and after the concert, Barky’s people said that they were pleased at what had occurred, saying “We got what we needed.”
I will never vote Obama!

Of all the cowardly things Obama has done, turning his back on the LGTG community is the most reprehensible.

I get the idea that Obama has s deep revulsion to menbers of the LGTG community. I can’t prove it, but I am disgusted by it.

Comment by Arabella Trefoil | 2008-07-26 05:23:53

I meant to write the LGBT community.

Iraq sounds like a nightmare place. And BO is embarrassed by Americans. I feel so bad for the gay people and women in Iraq.

I heard on GretaWire.com BO doesn’t celebrate Christmas. That’s a little odd, isn’t it? For a proclaimed Christian to not celebrate Christmas.

Comment by Christy | 2008-07-26 05:55:04

You’re right Arabella, I get the feeling BO hates the LGBT community also. I have never heard him say anything supportive to them.

Of course, I am not trying to listen to BO. I really can’t stand the sound of his voice.

One of his his three spirtual mentors is Rev James Meeks, whose church put on a Halloween “skit” showing homosexuals and a praying Buddhist being dragged into hell.

I just checked the site. I am glad there were PUMA freinds there.I can not believe this idiot chairman would say ” if she wants it”??? how about 18 millions people want it, and then he compare himself to Hillary saying he knows how one feels when one loses. He has a nerve, this loser did not even won one state. No even 100,000 votes; and he compare himself with Hillary who is actually our winner of the primary ! but loser like him selected another loser ???
I wish I was there and would tell him all this myself.

Candid conversation on an open mike…..
http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2008/07/microphone-pick.html

“And, well, and you start making mistakes,” Obama said, “or you lose the big picture. Or you lose a sense of, I think you lose a feel– ”

“Your feeling,” interrupted Cameron. “And that is exactly what politics is all about. The judgment you bring to make decisions.”

“That’s exactly right,” Obama said. “And the truth is that we’ve got a bunch of smart people, I think, who know ten times more than we do about the specifics of the topics. And so if what you’re trying to do is micromanage and solve everything then you end up being a dilettante but you have to have enough knowledge to make good judgments about the choices that are presented to you.”

Dr. Dean got ahead of himself, calling Obama “President Obama”.

Will Hillary get a vote at the convention?

Comment by Grail Guardian | 2008-07-26 07:08:34

If Obama is elected, you can plan on Gays getting similar treatment in this country within a few short years. They are a “safe” testing ground for torture and inhumanity. Then it will slowly spread to other groups probably starting with Latinas, then Jewish women, caucasian women, a few straight men, and finally anyone who opposes him. Welcome to the Fourth Reich.
