Shrum Predicts Romney as VP for McCain, Bayh or Biden for Obama

I interviewed Bob Shrum last night for NQR. He told some great political war stories. I asked him who he thought would be the strongest vice presidential choices for both McCain and Obama. He thinks that McCain will select Romney. He suggested
Obama will go with the “obvious” choice of Bayh or Biden, or he’ll surprise everyone and pick a wild card. If you haven’t yet listened, please click here.

McCain will be making a huge mistake if he picks Romney as his running mate. I still pray that the super D’s open their eyes and do what is best for our country and vote for Hillary. But, if it comes down to McCain and Obama as our actual nominees, he will not win with Romney.

I agree. McCain put it best when he criticized his opponent during the primaries. Would Americans vote for the man who shipped their jobs?

However, many voters feel Mitt Romney would bolster McCain’s economic credentials. He would bring some big states into play, and he has name recognition. He’s just too safe a choice in an already dull campaign.

Comment by sisterdo | 2008-07-25 22:59:36

I don’t think he’ll pick Romney, at least AOL says he’s nixed it.

But Romney is a great choice. UHC, strong understanding of the economy, has worked with Democrats, and could win MA, MI, FL, the south, and help in the Mormon west.

He’s a strong, excellent choice who balances out McCain and I think it’s too bad that he’s already probably out of the running.

He’s got his weaknesses too, but with a good platform he could have both Conservative and moderate Dem appeal.

Comment by Linda K | 2008-07-26 01:58:43

If McCain picks Romney as his running mate, I will have to seriously consider my voting for him. I don’t care if this sounds prejudiced, but I’ve seen enough crazy Mormons (and other religious fanatics) that I wouldn’t want one near the the White House. I think in that case I’d have to sit out this election. And then there’s the dog on top of the car..

Comment by Obama is a bum | 2008-07-26 04:39:05

If you want to compare Mormons to Obama’s black liberation church, I’ll easily pick the Mormons. And if you want to compare Romney to Obama, I’ll easily pick Romney.

Comment by Hope Floats | 2008-07-26 08:04:53

HAHAHA. After seeing Wright’s over-caffeinated sermons, Mormons look very normal these days.

Comment by Hillary or Bust | 2008-07-26 10:04:57

Not all Mormons are nuts. Many Christians are nuts too. I’ll take a Mormon over the Trinity Church any day of the week. I don’t think we should vote against someone just because their religion is not mainstream. My own spirituality is far from mainstream and many people would call me a nut based on a surface judgment because I’m not a mainline Christian.

Romney will help McCain in the South? What? The Southern Baptists consider the Mormons to be a cult.

Comment by beverly leslie | 2008-07-26 12:31:03

Romney will help Mccain in Michigan and Massachuttes.

Comment by Masshole | 2008-07-26 15:49:55

There is no way Romney helps in Massachusetts. He could help McCain get maybe 2 more points in MA, but he really wasn’t that popular here at all, and largely ineffective. The Mass legislature overrode his veto hundreds of time and his one piece of important legislation, Mittcare, has been an economic nightmare. He’d be a terrible pick unless McCain feels he’s the best for the base (I think Palin or Jindal are better for the base).

I don’t disagree about Michigan though…Romney will help there.

If Hillary wasn’t interested in fighting,I think she would have given up her delegates. So my theory, she will go to the convention, and I think many of the democrats for Hillary will fight. I think she’ll be at the top of the ticket, and Obama her VP. The dems did say there would be party Unity in November. And that’s the only way I see it happening. How many delegates haven’t come forward to support Hillary over Obama?I think many are waiting for the convention. If I’m wrong, and Clinton isn’t on the top. There’s no way Obama will win,as he’s not winning the white voters from Hillary’s clan.Mccain high in the numbers for white voters over Obama, which was mentioned tonite on Fox.

Comment by stateofdisbelief | 2008-07-26 00:42:47

Here’s how to let Hillary know we’re still out here waiting for her and to not give up those delegates! She sent out an email with this link asking us to tell us what is important to us.

“I want you to tell me about the issues that matter to you. I want to hear what’s happening with you and your family — how high gas prices, the war in Iraq, and the struggling economy are affecting you. Your feedback will help steer the direction of HillPAC and how we are going to tackle America’s problems together. Tell me below about the issues that matter to you and your family today.”

I’d still watch my back. At least until we find out how that choir member died. For everyone’s sake I hope there is no connection because if there is………………… literally EVERYONE that backed BO up especially his inner group will be instantly OUT of favor and their names will turn to MUD. Probably forever.

McCain actually has a shot at winning blue Massachusetts…but only if he DOESN’T PICK ROMNEY.

The Clinton base in MA is strong, and PISSED.

However, none of them thought much of Mitt Romney. They found him to be a weak, pandering, uninspiring, do-nothing, whiney, and frequently absent governor–a lot like the PRESENT governor (who’s praying Obama will win so he can snatch a cabinet job and get the hell out of the state–he didn’t realize it would be “hard work” trying to placate a vigorous legislature here).

Massachusetts has gone from being reliably blue to “could flip” at this stage. It’s one-third INDEPENDENT voters, and that number could grow, thanks to BO and his thuggery.

There’s an older population of people who don’t live at their keyboards in this state who don’t give a flying fuck about “the blogosphere” and aren’t impressed with that posturing male model, and who find McCain’s humility more in keeping with their New England values.

See, they realize McCain isn’t perfect. They realize Obama isn’t perfect, either.

The difference is, McCain admits it. Obama sends out thugs to beat up anyone who dares to suggest he’s anything other than the Sun King.

Oh, and those old people who don’t know anything about the “net?” They know about the voting booth–they never miss an election, even if it’s for a local yokel.

I’m from Indiana and I’ve always liked Evan Bayh. But if he is Obama’s choice for VP, I still will not vote for Obama. I also will lose all respect for Bayh that I had. I don’t support people that step on principles and the interest of our country for their own gain. Being in government is a duty to citizens or it used to be.

Comment by Hoosiergal | 2008-07-25 23:21:07

I agree with you Wodiej.
Evan is well respected here in Indiana among Dems and Reps but I hope it will not be enough to turn our state blue in November. I saw former senator Birch Bayh (Evan’s father) was out campaigning for BO last weekend. He helped open some campaign offices here in Northwest Indiana. I can’t even remember the last time he campaigned for anyone so his sudden reappearance leaves me to think Evan is a strong possibility for BO’s VP. I know he won’t be getting my vote.

You didn’t know Romney.

Worst.

Governor.

EVER!

And that’s saying a lot in a state that doesn’t expect much from our governors. He took an easy job and screwed it up…how’s that for “executive talent?”

He stunk at a gig where the legislature does the heavy lifting for him–constantly absent, left his “blondie” LT GOVERNOR who couldn’t put a sentence together “in charge,” with disastrous results (that idiot gave women in politics a BAD name–she was GHASTLY), and showed his Obamalike bullying talents when he fucked over Acting Governor Jane Swift, pushing her out of the primary contest when she had actually been filling the Governor’s chair and was doing a halfway decent (not great, but not hideous) job. The nomination should have been Swift’s, but hey, she was “just a girl.”

Romney is poison to that ticket. Poison.

For those few unaware, Romney strapped his dog to the roof of his station wagon for a thirteen hour ride to their vacation home in CANADA (see, he can’t even holiday in America, the bum). The dog, frightened and freezing at seventy MPH, shit down the back of the car–runny, scared, crap everywhere. Now, dogs do NOT shit where they live, if they can avoid it–you know that dog was stressed.

Romney solved the problem with a HOSE, and kept going. Can you imagine the trauma for that animal? Every vet asked about it called it CRUELTY.

That’ll come up again. It’s not good, either.

It’s not quite a MACACA moment, but it’s a “Fuck You” to anyone who likes dogs–and there are lots of dog lovers who vote. McCain would do well to avoid that pomaded phony.

Comment by Mr.Murder | 2008-07-25 22:15:37

Bayh is milquetoast.

Joe Biden’s ego will stop him, he’s gaffe prone to the point of implosion.

Mitt Romney is the money main(Liz Cheney as an advisor sealed the deal) bought and paid for.

If Obama wants Florida back he’d offer Bob Graham a shot, who might well retire after a term and allow him to generate new support in the vetting of a second VP as an incumbent.

Graham has security credentials, trade credentials(Florida is a huge commerce state), and he even attracts some of the left vote with his celebrated Buffet fanhood, along with conservatives for straight forward style. One that actually can surpass McCain in that regard, Graham could be crucial for one key state that might be enough to seal the deal.

He’d make Florida so strong a state that key political capital could be applied elsewhere it is needed.

Comment by rjj | 2008-07-25 22:21:52

You are taking the functional approach. Is is practical?

Graham’s age and idiosyncracies would make it a hard sell once Jon Stewart and the aging comedians got to work on the two of them.

Comment by Hope Floats | 2008-07-25 22:22:38

That’s an interesting argument. You might have something there.

Comment by imustprotest | 2008-07-25 23:15:41

Graham is qualified, safe, but boring.

Comment by Clinton Fan | 2008-07-26 03:01:11

Not all that “safe.” He writes down EVERYTHING he does–he has OCD. No, not just a schedule–EVERYTHING, as in what he had for breakfast, what clothes he puts on, down to the color of the socks, and for all we know, he writes down when he takes a crap. He recounts conversations pretty much verbatim.

It’s…weird. TOO MUCH INFORMATION!

Also, the rumor mill says he’s deep-in-the-closet gay. True or not, he’d have that swirling around him.

Those two matters alone make him problematic as a candidate in this society at this point in time. Frankly, that’s unfortunate, because he has an outstanding mind, and is particularly skilled in the areas where Obama is wanting (and that’s pretty much all of them, save perhaps Expert Use of Teleprompter).

why not Carly Fiorina for McCain’s VP? Heather seems too meek. you know he is going to have to get someone strong as he will be a one-term president of that i am sure.

McCain’s choice is strategic and he has time. obama is desperate. hey, maybe the mayor of Berlin?

Comment by Clinton Fan | 2008-07-26 03:11:28

Carly is a bad choice. A lot of people dislike her. They find her “grating.”

And most people don’t know who the fuck she is, and there’s no time for people to play “Getting to know you.”

Being a CEO type isn’t an advantage anymore, either. I think people would prefer an elected official, a governor, perhaps.

If he’s going to pick a woman, pick Olympia Snow–it’s almost as good as picking the beloved actress Olympia Dukakis (who played a Snow-like character in the HBO film “Pentagon Wars”).

She’s tough, she is SMART, she has that “self-reliant” quality, she’s not a grandstander, she’s old enough so that only an asshole would pick her apart for her looks, and she generates respect.

She’s no spring chicken, either, but so what. She has the ability to make people feel that it will be all right in the end.

Comment by Hope Floats | 2008-07-26 08:41:10

We haven’t heard her name much at all, and I suspect it’s because she’s so moderate. She was in the Gang of 14 with McCain, and conservatives hate McCain for that. Those two on the same ticket would make heads explode, but I say so what? Millions of Clinton voters would be attracted by adding Olympia Snowe. If McCain had any guts, he’d do it. His advisers are likely against the idea.

Here’s another brother Roy, who’s now called Abongo Obama.

In his book, Obama admits that Abongo felt that the black man must “liberate himself from the poisoning influences of European culture.” He embraced Islam and changed his lifestyle to shun pork, and drinking and other western trappings. He sees the west as a corrupting force…yes, folks, that includes the United States…most especially the United States.

http://www.songwave.com/articles/abongo-obama.htm

Here’s another article on him from the Suntimes. I think he has several brothers.

An accountant, Abongo Obama also argued that the black man must “liberate himself from the poisoning influences of European culture,” Obama wrote. “But the magic of his laughter remains, and we can disagree without rancor.”

Obama’s Criticism Irks Kenyan Government
Government Says Obama Is A Stooge For Political Opposition

by Mike Flannery

(CBS) There are signs of tension between Sen. Barack Obama and African leaders. On Monday, Obama stepped up his criticism of government corruption in Kenya.

But as CBS 2 Political Editor Mike Flannery reports, the government fired back, saying Obama is a stooge for an opposing political party.

A surprise raid that seized and burned copies of Kenya’s oldest newspaper, The Standard, still prompts journalists there to call last March 2 the darkest day in the more than 100 years they’ve been publishing.

“For us as an institution, I think it was the lowest point in the history of this newspaper,” News Editor Douglas Okwatch said.

It was because of that raid that Sen. Barack Obama went to the Standard’s offices. He declared that democracy can’t work without freedom of the press and freedom of information.

“It is not just a loss for the Standard. It’s a loss for the people of Kenya. So my hope is that this is one episode that won’t be repeated,” Obama said.

At the University of Nairobi two hours later, the senator offered more pointed criticism, something he’s done almost every day since arriving last week. After remaining largely silent, the government of President Mwai Kibaki is beginning to respond, suggesting that Obama may have fallen under the spell of opposition leader Raila Odinga.

A potential presidential candidate himself, Odinga’s been at Obama’s elbow here fairly often and is a member of the Obama family’s Luo tribe.

“Sen. Obama has to look at critically about where he’s receiving his advice from,” said government spokesman Dr. Alfred Mutua. “Just because somebody, somewhere wants to run for president and is using Sen. Obama as his stooge, as his puppet to be able to get to where he wants to get to.”

There’s more.

Comment by madamab | 2008-07-25 22:42:10

He definitely might.

It really depends on what constituency he is trying to target. Is he still afraid that the religious right won’t come out to vote for him? Or is he thinking he’s got them in the bag, and he needs to pull some Clintonites to his side?

For the religious right, Hackabee would be the best choice. For the Clinton voters, perhaps Palin.

Who knows. It doesn’t matter to me who he picks. The top of my ticket is remaining blank unless HRC is the nominee.

Comment by Diana | 2008-07-25 23:23:01

I thought about that also, but then I throw my vote away and make it easier for Obama to get in. Then there is no Hillary 2012. I like McCain…I’m worried about his VP choice, and now they’re caging Hillary supporters in Denver 2 football fields away from the convention and any media tent…So MSNBC will set their media tent two football fields away from the convention so Hillary supporters will be 4 football fields away. Anyone caught outside of the cage protesting will be arrested. So much for freedom of speech. That’s going to come back and bite them though. Watch and see; the entire Democrat party.

Schrum is part of the core insider Kennedy-Kerry group that picked Obama over Hillary. (Kerry said “Ted and I know what’s best for the party” on one of the talking heads shows. As part of Bud’s interview, Schrum even mentioned Russert as part of Kennedy’s presidential aspiration team back in the 80’s, and we know how much Russert hated Hillary and cut her down every chance he got. It’s very apparent these people did not want another Clinton in the WH for their own personal reasons — maybe it’s ego on Kennedy and Kerry’s part — I don’t know, but since they haven’t said anything public the reasons must not be altruistic.

If Schrum says Romney, that’s probably who he thinks Obama would like to run against.

McCain would like to pick Lieberman but that would irritate the conservatives even more. McCain may pick Jindal even though he is inexperienced but he is non-white which means it is difficult for the media to criticize him. If the media did start criticizing Jindal because of inexperience then that would allow McCain to bring up Obama’s inexperience. Jindal would win this battle since his past is more successful and he does not have a shady past like Obama.

McCain also likes Ridge. Romney would be a safe choice since he has good economic experience.

Almost anyone Obama picks would be superior to him. Anyone who accepts Obama’s VP will be tied into him and will kill their political career should Obama win.

Ridge would be a good choice. He was governor of PA, is a good Republican, and would help get swing states.

Plus cardboard Romney or folksy Huckabee aren’t needed in this fight against Obama. Dobson has said he would pick McCain over Obama.

I really like Jindal, but he’s only in his thirty’s. What about Gov. Charlie Crist? He’s well liked here in Florida and he has lived up to all his campaign promises. Romney would help McCain with his weekness which is the economy, so he probably will be McCains choice.

Gov Crist could be a strong choice.

Who? Some bridge to nowhere advocate? Yeah, try that.

The assumption rests on facts not in evidence, that Clinton voters would vote for any woman candidate. This isn’t like four black persons I know of saying they’d vote for Obama because he is black.

If you go to the polls Survey USA did with VP picks added Romney and Huckabee were the ones who really helped McCain.

If Obama is on the ticket they already have a woman-they dont need two.

Huckabee would sink McCain, the more people know of him the less he’s liked. His wife race baited voters and challenged their right to vote in Little Rock, Ike would have called the National Guard on her. His son likes to take firearms on jumbo jets also. Huckabee takes money from conflicting interests and pardons people who do violent crime on political opponent’s relatives.

He also avoids paygo and fought the balanced budget Constitution in Arkansas to try and gin up long term pork projects for highway construction deals in order to boost his campaign supporters and patrons.

Go ahead and pick him, and his jesus freak global warming denial brigades of self schoolers.

Some jokes write themselves.

The base of the Republican Party is now rightwing evangelicals. They turn out in droves, and they love Hackabee. They could not care less how crazy he is.

Like I said, it depends on who McCain is trying to attract.

You speak the truth, Mr. Murder.
Don’t forget all the pardons of murderers and rapists. :/

I really dislike Romney also, but he did make a video for Planned Parenthood till he got caught and chastised. At least I know where he stands on the issues. He’s still better than Obama to me. Ugh I think that’s who McCain is going to pick also. But I still think Obama is going to choose Republican Chuck Hagel.

Comment by imustprotest | 2008-07-25 23:11:08

If Obama picks Hagel…we’re doomed, that’s a winning ticket. Now if McCain would counter with Colin Powell or Petraeus….THAT’s the winning ticket!

Powell lost any chance of a political career when he went to the UN and tried to sell them “Mobile WMD Factories” in Iraq.

That is waaayyyy too much baggage.

Comment by Hope Floats | 2008-07-26 08:46:58

Pretty nasty of the Bush administration putting that on him. I always liked Powell.

Powell should have resigned.

As Valerie Plame said, it was the thinnest of evidence he used to bolster his U.N. argument.
