Shrum was there to legitimize Obama and ride over us with the Unity Pony. Whomever he picks to be on his 'ticket" (he wasn;t even nominated) will end up a loser just like Obama - so, who cares?

Of the realistic alternatives McCain has available to him (I would LOVE to see a John McCain/Colin Powell ticket, but it ain't gonna happen), Mitt Romney would be the best bet. The way that he shamelessly tacked to the hard right in the GOP primaries, flipping as many of his positions as The Annointed One, really left a bad taste in my mouth. But it can't be argued that he brings some signifcant advantages to McCain:

1) He understands the economy and the financial markets better than any current national figure in either party. A perceived lack of expertise on economic matters is one of McCain's key weaknesses, so adding Romney would definitely be a significant boost in this area.

2) He has an impressive record as a problem-solver and for turning around troubled situations. I think if McCain were to announce that he planned to let Romney lead a special effort to reduce the US budget deficit, it would be well-received by voters.

3) He would probably deliver Michigan for McCain, and Michigan is one of five key states that will determine who wins in November, the others being Ohio, Colorado, Florida and Virginia.

4) He has a ton of money and isn't shy about spending it. This could help negate Obama's funding advantage.

5) Finally, he's a good campaigner and an excellent formal speechmaker, something which McCain, unfortunately, is not. He would make an excellent "attack dog" for going after Obama while McCain remains above the fray.

The only real downside that I see is that some of the more retarded elements on the right wing of the Republican Party might have trouble with the fact that he's a Mormon. But given that most of these types are concentrated in the south and that McCain has solid leads there, I don't think it would have any real impact.

All in all, Romney compliments McCain very well. If Colin Powell isn't interested, I hope Romney is the pick.

You think she would join a ticket with a guy who is solidly with Bush on everything and the antithesis of everything she has worked for her whole life?

There is no way Romney helps in Massachusetts. He could help McCain get maybe 2 more points in MA, but he really wasn't that popular here at all, and largely ineffective. The Mass legislature overrode his veto hundreds of time and his one piece of important legislation, Mittcare, has been an economic nightmare. He'd be a terrible pick unless McCain feels he's the best for the base (I think Palin or Jindal are better for the base).

I don't disagree about Michigan though...Romney will help there.

Any democrat I see campaigning for Obama makes me sick. I want to get rid of all of them in Congress. They had no balls and as SDs voted for Obama. I am waiting for someone with courage to get up and say "I not going to take this. Obama should not be the nominee."

Terrible choices all around. But fitting. Why should we get better choices for Veep when the choices for Prez already suck?

Anyone who thinks the Republicans would put Hillary on the ticket is delusional.
Let's not forget they impeached her husband. If McCain announced Hillary is his VP choice, you'd see Republican PUMAS dwarf the number of Democrat PUMAS overnight. I'm a lifelong Democrat who will vote for McCain. Everyone knows McCain needs a lot of help on economic issues. Romney, despite the baggage he has) is the only one with economic credentials. And he can talk the talk. All of the other Republicans are too inexperienced (Palin, Jindahl), ineffective on camera (Pawlenty) or just a wee bit too evangelical (Huckabee). Then there's Condi - no econ record: Powell - no econ record + 71 years old. Enough said. Latest polls show a McCain/Romney ticket is a big winner in Michigan.
