Hannity and Rep. Joe Sestak On Barack Obama’s Cancelled Military Visits [Riverdaughter Update Below]

Rep. Sestak, you are one of my heroes. I know that you have to go along with the Democratic party — and the funding of your reelection campaign is at stake (ahem) — but I am sorry that the party used you like this:

“So if you want my take on this, if you want to remember one thing about this trip, is that Barack Obama chose to work out rather than see the wounded troops because he couldn’t bring Katie Couric, Charlie Gibson, and Brian Williams with him.” — Sean Hannity

See my original story, “Barack Skipped Visiting Wounded Troops in Germany.” And check out Memorandum.com’s coverage of the controversy.

Here’s more from “The Sean Hannity Show” (syndicated AM radio), July 25, 2008 (SusanUnPC’s Note: I disagree with many of Hannity’s political views, particularly on health care, but on this issue he is 100% correct. Obama could have gone “solo” to visit the troops. That would have been the right thing to do. I cannot fathom his excuse that he didn’t go because his campaign staff wasn’t permitted to accompany him.)

Sean Hannity: “You know I’ve found one article — I hadn’t known this — I was telling you earlier the Obama campaign tried to blame the Pentagon. Here he was scheduled. He wanted to go visit this military hospital. It was on the campaign sheet to go visit the military hospital in Germany. And we find out that the only restrictions the Pentagon wanted to impose was their rule against turning visits by politicians into campaign events.

“And, by the way, you know, I know for a fact because I talked to these kids when I went to Walter Reed and Bethesda, that literally the president would sneak on over often to go see these, kids — you never heard about it, it was never reported. As a matter of fact, I remember I was out there with Ollie North and they said, yeah the president was just here, two days ago, whatever it was. And you know, same thing with Donald Rumsfeld. Donald Rumsfeld used to go over there all the time, but he didn’t turn it into a campaign event.

“Anyway, so Obama has it on the schedule. The Pentagon says, look, you can come but they’re going to impose their rule against turning a visit by a politician into a campaign event. Now this is what we finally are finding out here. All the Pentagon said is they advised Obama’s staff — yeah of course he can visit the hospital and injured personnel in Germany but only in his capacity as a Member of Congress, in other words without the trappings of a political campaign, which by the way, it’s unfair to use sick soldiers who risked their lives as a political prop.

“Obama apparently cancelled the visit and went to work out instead. He went to work out and then said it would be inappropriate as part of a trip financed by his campaign. Well, as John McCain said, it’s never inappropriate if you are a United States Senator to visit a sick soldier. It’s never inappropriate. There’s not one taxpayer in the country that would have any opposition to this nor is there any rules against this. The only difference is the only restriction that was placed is that they don’t want to have candidates, you know, using the appearance for some type of political benefit. That wasn’t enough. He had to bring along of course the entourage and the multiple 10,000 media press secretaries along with him.

“So if you want my take on this, if you want to remember one thing about this trip is that Barack Obama chose to work out rather than see the wounded troops because he couldn’t bring Katie Couric, Charlie Gibson, and Brian Williams with him.”

UPDATE:

From a very clever, imaginative story by “madamab” at The Confluence, Bill Burton’s Secret Weapon: A Play in One Scientific Act:

AXELROD: Okay, Bill, we’ve got several things that need our immediate attention. First off, as you know, President Obama’s foreign-policy experience has now been brought up to parity with John McCain’s after his week-long tour of Europe and the Middle East. So we’re all good there. However, we estimated that a million people would attend his speech in Berlin, and even with two free concerts thrown in, we were nowhere near that number. Can we figure out how many people attended?

BURTON: No problemo! [addressing the box on his desk] Computer, how many people attended the Berlin rally?

COMPUTER [in sultry female voice]: Please press the green button. [BURTON does so.] Your answer is: Two hundred thousand.

AXELROD: Great, great. I’ll send it out now. [notates the number in his iPhone and quickly sends it off to his press mailing list] Okay, next item is: The President skipped a visit to the troops while in Berlin because the Pentagon wouldn’t allow him to bring in his cameras. How do we make it clear that President Obama does not, in fact, think of the troops as just a campaign prop?

BURTON [drawing in his breath]: Oooooh, that’s a tough one. Let’s see what our girl can come up with. Computer, what is the reason for Obama’s skipping his visit to the troops?

COMPUTER: Please press the red button. [BURTON does so.] Your answer is: I.A.C.F.

AXELROD [confused]: IACF?

BURTON [embarrassed at the faux pas]: Um, that stands for “It’s All Clinton’s Fault.” I keep telling her that is no longer an acceptable response, but she keeps defaulting to it - I don’t know why. [addressing computer] Computer, please give alternate reason.

COMPUTER: Please press the red button. [BURTON does so.] Your alternate reason is: George W. Bush.

AXELROD: George W. Bush? What does she mean by that?

BURTON [nervously]: Search me. [both think for a moment]

AXELROD: Wait, wait! I’ve got it! We’ll say the Pentagon stopped him from going. They were worried that it would look like a campaign visit. Brilliant, Bill! Gotta love that machine. [BURTON is visibly relieved. AXELROD dashes off another communique to the press corpse.] …

Read all.

Once again the media is unable to get a story straight, so I turn to those of you who still think it matters (I do!)

The media has been reporting that 200,000 Berliners flocked to hear Barack Obama. The photo is on the front page of the Washington Post and many other papers. They neglected to mention that he followed a free concert by 2 VERY popular groups.

This is exactly what happened when the media reported 75,000 voters who flocked to see Obama in Portland a few months ago — when in fact, his speech there was also attached to a free rock concert.

Please write letters to the editor at letters@nytmes, letters@washpost.com, AP and any other news source that failed to mention that Obama’s speech in Berlin was preceded by a free rock concert — as it was in Portland months ago. (see below).

Here’s a sample letter:

To the editor:

It is difficult to believe your news articles when you can’t get simple facts straight. Many of the 200,000 Berliners who heard Barack Obama’s speech were actually there for the free concert before his speech. The same thing happened a few months ago when you reported 75,000 voters in Portland were there for an Obama speech — which also just happened to coincide with a free rock concert.

Sen. Obama’s PR folks are very good at their job, but surely your journalists can see through this. It is part of the mythology of BO that he can attract huge crowds to his speeches. But he has a secret weapon: free rock concerts. It’s your job to report that.

Sincerely,
NAME AND ADDRESS AND PHONE

I’m hoping you can help make sure the media corrects themselves this time.

I remember seeing the platform where they had the band, when they were finished playing. In front of the platform where the huge media lot. I am sure also, they would have used the platform for cameras too. It was close to the podium where Obama did his speech.

Comment by beebop | 2008-07-26 14:43:06

One media source is reporting it. The World Wildlife Fund was also there handing out free teeshirts with the Polar Bear on it. Seems like it was one huge marketing to do.

http://www.csmonitor.com/2008/0725/p25s12-woeu.html

Apparently they are more interested in Brand Oblowme than in getting him elected. The only way to do the latter is to convince more people who vote here in the US that he is not a prancing pony. Gee. How’d that work out?

I couldn’t even finish watching that tape w/Sestak

HAVE MERCY does ANYONE tell the truth???

Murtha, Webb, Clark (just 3 Veterans of the top of my head) all slip in and out of military hospitals where ever they go. If ANY one of them WANTED to make it a big deal with press all they would have to do is snap their fingers.

Barry is NO more important. If he TRULY wanted to see the troops he would find a way to slip in and see them practically unnoticed and be given credit for the “classiness” of it all.

BUT THAT WOULD NEVER happen cuz BARRY is a classless P.O.S. impersonator!

YACK! (spit)

Sestak is a douche. Why did he keep going on about “brain trauma” and mental illness as well as physical illness? Was Obama supposed to visit the psych ward, too? I got the sense he was trying to emphasize that war vets are “crazy” (and mentally unfit to be POTUS, for example.) He was pushing some agenda like a bill or his party’s nominee’s candidacy. It’s sickening that he was doing exactly what he claimed to oppose - exploiting our troops.

Comment by Clinton Fan | 2008-07-26 16:30:59

How many of them are voters?

That’s the real question!

Yet another “Me, Me, ME!!” exercise by His Holiness, The Anointed One.

He really has a problem, and it is becoming evident. He doesn’t visit the troops because his snippy little retired major general/campaign-toady-not-Senate staffer can’t go along with the media crew to take pictures for the campaign ads, he won’t do a “town meeting” where real people talk WITH him, instead, he has to do these Mussolini-like mega-gatherings where everyone is looking at “ME ME ME!!!!”

All cheers, no challenges.

Fuck that nonsense.

Such hubris. He’s written not one, but TWO books at his young and inexperienced age about, of course, HIMSELF. ME, ME, ME!!!!

His mantra should be “I love ME, and YOU love ME!! ME, ME, ME!!!” It would be more honest than all this CHANGE crap he keeps spouting.

It’s pathological, his behavior! It’s also tiresome. No one likes a braggart, and that’s what he is. Not only is his boastful arrogance off-putting, it’s suggestive of self-esteem issues that even coronation as King won’t mitigate.

I don’t want to see an inexperienced yay-hoo, an empty suit, using the highest office in the land as a tool to work through his parental abandonment, identity, self-esteem and other personal issues. It’s not an honorary position, and it’s not a symbolic one, either. You have to know what the hell you’re doing, and you have to work hard.

Part of the reason we’re in a mess as a nation is because we put someone just like Obama in the White House, with “daddy” issues, self-esteem problems, fighting addiction, arrogant, touchy, refusing to take advice…sound familiar?

“Yee-haw” is not a foreign policy, and neither is “Yes We Can.” Do we need MORE of that shit? No, we don’t, we need a LEADER. Someone who’s been through the fire, been beaten up, knocked down, who knows how to take a punch and come back with ten punches and a semi-automatic.

Someone like HRC.

Obama just will NOT do. He’s the Democratic Party’s version of GWB The Incompetent, and I’m not having that. Our country DESERVES better.

Sean Hannity is one of the few media people out there sounding the alarm about Obama. What are we supposed to do, sit back and happily munch on all the Obama cotton candy being passed out by the likes of MSNBC/NBC, CNN, Newsweek, the NYT, and others too numerous to mention?

Thanks, Susan. You needn’t apologize for being openminded enough to consider all the information that is available, regardless of the source. At least you are a critical thinker, unlike the braindead Obama worshippers.

Hasn’t the big question been why would anyone support Obama, being the deceptive, dangerous candidate he is? It’s their country, too. Why risk it’s well being?
Republicans, pundits, celebrities, Democrats..all those who would promote this candidate have undermined their own credibility in doing so.
If Sean Hannity is one wise enough to put country first, why not be happy to have a voice like his in the media?

Comment by Dawnelle leóna del puma | 2008-07-26 17:02:09

OH I am happy he’s being honest and I’m sure it’s not the first time but he’s also (or he can be very) hateful “generalizing” all Democrats. I was ONE that used to get very insulted by him quite often before all this.

That’s all I’m saying. I’m glad for anyone speaking out for HILLARY! Especially if they MEAN it and are NOT Doing it to kiss someone’s ASS or otherwise out of some deceit!

Comment by elise | 2008-07-27 01:57:55

That is the dichotomy that is the msn now. I had never watched FOX News until there was no where else to go. But, I’m not delusional. Hannity has that disgusting, self-satisfied slob, Dick Morris, on his show all the time and I don’t feel they were fair because they suddenly love Hillary. They aren’t in the tank for Obama and that alone allows them a different perspective. I just cannot watch CNN and MSNBC anymore and I doubt that will change even after everything is decided. We have a real media problem here and it’s still going to be there after the election. Another reason to fight now while it is still possible to take their power away by refusing to be manipulated and brainwashed.

Waffles showed atrocious judgement in blowing off wounded troops.

Why would it matter that his campaign staff couldn’t come? Can’t his campaign think on their feet?

I mean, Waffles was able to alter plans to fit in an unscheduled fundraising event with Iranian-Americans, so long as they ponied up the cash beforehand.

http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/story?id=5453300&page=1

Oh, I get it now. The wounded troops weren’t paying customers. That explains why Waffles couldn’t be bothered.

And to think the President of Iran arrived at UN a mere 5 days later - Hmmm

My guess is money laundering on a rather large scale and that is how he collected the Iranians ortion.

Oh and Alsamaree (sp?) was also noted to be in Mid-East collecting money for Obama’s campaign.

Who the messenger is does NOT change the fact that Obama planned on visiting the sick troops weeks ahead. When he is told he can visit our troops but without the media fanfare and photo-op did he cancels. It was not wisdom that made him cancel but cold selfishness. It is only one more example that nothing Obama does is motivated by principle or concern for this country and its people.

Sestak’s argument has no merit. Obama’s campaign used the fact that he already visited wounded troops in the Middle East to prove he really wanted to visit them in Germany. So Sestak, is that visit going to be used/misused?

Comment by Elizabeth Reilly | 2008-07-26 14:20:57

Seatak seems another guy who is too in love with himself to speak with much integrity. How many times did he mention he was an Admiral and did you catch the “I wore the ‘cloth’ of my country” mantra? So did lots of other people who don’t have the same need to boast about it like he does. Dispicable, and he didn’t really give an acceptable answer to why Obama didn’t go…just lame excuses.
The truth is, the Pentagon said that Obama was free to go, just not with an entouage, but could go as a US Senator with some staff. That was not good enough for Obama. He needs to be deified by the press and by huge crushes of people to feel worthwhile, apparently.
This trip is turning into a gold mine for the Republicans. His arrogance is overwhelming and turning voters off, the more they see of him.
He should take more trips!!!!

Wis. Democrats oust delegate over McCain support

By RYAN J. FOLEY, Associated Press Writer Fri Jul 25, 5:07 PM ET

MADISON, Wis. - Wisconsin Democrats on Friday ousted a delegate to their national convention for saying she would vote for Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain in November.

Embarrassed by a defection in their ranks, the Wisconsin Democratic Party’s administrative committee voted 23-0 to strip Debra Bartoshevich of her status as a delegate to the Denver convention next month.

Bartoshevich was elected by party activists as a pledged delegate for Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton from the 1st Congressional District in southeastern Wisconsin. But after Clinton dropped out of the race, Bartoshevich told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel she would support McCain over Democratic Sen. Barack Obama.

The June comments from Bartoshevich, a 41-year-old nurse and mother of two from Waterford, were seized on by the McCain campaign as evidence of his appeal to former Clinton backers. Within hours, the Wisconsin Democratic Party passed a resolution at its state convention supporting a challenge of her credentials with the national committee.

The party’s rules and bylaws committee said the state party could decide the matter, clearing the way for Friday’s vote. Committee members agreed Bartoshevich had lost her privilege to be one of the state’s 92 Democratic delegates because of her comments and affiliation with “Citizens for McCain,” a branch of his campaign designed to recruit independents and Democrats.

During a teleconference before the vote, Bartoshevich asked the committee to allow her to attend the convention as a delegate for Clinton. She noted that she donated her time and money to Clinton and still believes the former first lady is the best candidate.

She said she made the comments backing McCain during an emotional time shortly after Clinton dropped out of the race and as a first-time delegate was unfamiliar with party rules. She said she had not decided who to ultimately support and was still open to backing Obama if he won her over. “I’d like to go to the convention and listen,” she said.

She said her sister was a McCain supporter who signed her up for “Citizens for McCain.”

“You reached right back and hugged them. I have a problem with that,” committee member Dottie LeClaire responded.

The committee accepted a challenge that stated Bartoshevich violated rules requiring delegates to support the party’s nominee and be faithful to the party. Bartoshevich will be replaced by Marilyn Nemeth of Racine, who finished second to Bartoshevich in the delegate election earlier this year.

Obama made a serious mistake to go on this big ass rock star tour, blabbing to Germans, and posing every ten seconds for a picture.

He doesn’t give a shit about the soldiers…that should have been the highlight of his trip for him. I thought he wanted to be Commander in Chief? You know, the boss of the military–the one we are supposed to trust?

He doesn’t have respect for our military. He’s a megalomaniac, just trying to be king of the globe. We are sick and tired of Obama Obama Obama…always in the media, always in our face. Obama overload.

kat in your hat — Obama doesn’t give a chit about Americans either. How much did his campaign and the American taxpayer spend on this Obama Love Me World tour? This country is in big trouble and Obama doesn’t care as long as he finds an audience to love him. Interesting about the 200,000 people who watched Obama because they came for a free Rock Concert. His campaign thought of everything, however, they didn’t figure that this charade was not going to sit well with the people of this country. Those people are saying Obama doesn’t relate to them. Lets give it up for Obama — future Vegas lounge act as he sings his rendition of I Gotta Be Me.

I’m thinking the good Senator won’t fare very well with the foreign media. I keep reading reports that only American journalists were allowed to talk to him (and Andrea Mitchell had to spill the beans over the lack of access during certain parts of the trip even for the Americans).

Will the MSM finally realize they gave their hearts to an undeserving suitor?

(Cue the song “Girlfriend” by Pebbles…)

Obamapuke can sneak off and meet with Hillary, why, because it is to his advantage doing so.

Obamapuke cannot sneak off and meet with wounded soldiers, why, because Obamapuke gains nothing from it and we all know Obama, from his books of lies to his ability to talk to ghost to his heading commitees he isn’t even on to his pushing through legislation that never existed or was the workings of others he wants the credit for, Obamapuke will do nothing he doesn’t prosper from, just ask Tony Rezko!

O-pump-me-up-at-gym-bama is a constant source of NO SURPRISES, isn’t he? That is the marvelous thing about his constantly embraced ego: it is really, really, REALLY stupid. Keep it up Obama, all the “bow to me” news print on you will be liner for birdcages even amongst your followers very soon.

and the funding of your reelection campaign is at stake (ahem)

If any of the down ticket Dems think they are going to get more than crumbs from the Chicago-DNC, they are too stupid to be in Congress anyway.

Comment by Zeke | 2008-07-26 13:58:24

Any downstream Dem who is in Barry’s thrall MUST be defeated too. Kinda like fleas… you gotta kill the eggs too.

Comment by madamab | 2008-07-26 14:03:11

You know what? I think I’m voting all Dem downticket. I want a strong Democratic majority to counter McCain’s warmongering tendencies and to fight his more right-wing Supreme Court Justice appointees.

If Hillary can’t be President, I want her as Senate Majority Leader so she can whip those Bush Dogs into shape. :-)

Comment by Zeke | 2008-07-26 14:28:58

In what dreamworld will Obama’s Dem’s allow Hillary to do anything but hold her seat? If that bastard gets elected, ALL Dem’s will be painted with Barry’s brush.
Since the “Bush Dogs” have had their teeth pulled for the last four years, who do you figure to blame when things go wrong next?
Correcting this disaster requires drastic surgery before it metastases. The disease is endemic to the individuals in congress NOW. Failure to recognize this will only allow it to spread.

Comment by madamab | 2008-07-26 14:31:56

If McCain gets elected, I think Hillary’s power in the Party will be a lot bigger than Obama’s.

Just sayin.’ ;-)

Comment by Hope Floats | 2008-07-26 17:56:50

I doubt Obama would ever allow that to happen. He as an unhealthy contempt for the Clintons and their allies in the capitol. Vote out any downticket Dems who did Hillary in during the primaries. The Dems will still win enough seats to be effective and will have to keep Lieberman around HAHA.

I live in Michigan, THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY took my vote and GAVE it to Obama. If you are a STILL A DEM then you get no support from me, I’m voting STRAIGHT REPUBLICAN

I call it a theft, as that is what it is.
And I agree with you.

My vote is not a bargaining chip.

There won’t be any money. The DNC is getting no money and Oblowme is not doing so well himself. He is going to need all of those scheckels to repaint his plane and continue to make an ass out of himself.

SusanUnPC - Thanks for linking to my play! I really appreciate it. :-)

I cannot believe the DNC is choosing Obama to represent the Democratic Party. Obama embodies every rightwing stereotype that was ever created about liberals. Self over country, doesn’t support the troops, against free speech and transparent elections, elitist…I almost think they are trying to lose this election so they can blame McCain for all the crap that will come down in the next four years due to Bush’s Reign of Error.

Comment by JoseyJ | 2008-07-26 14:34:03

The DNC and Washington establishment had rather risk losing with the Obama patricians than have the Clinton hicks back in the White House.
The establishment always resented the Clintons for refusing to attend their fancy caviar dinner parties where the deals are made before the votes are cast in Congress.
But the Obamas will gladly obey the Establishment - while Obama vacations and sits around “thinking.”

Obama is such an embarrassment. Lord, I’ve been embarrassed by Bush for so long, and now I have a choice between a doddering old man and a tongue-tied narcissistic rookie with a Messiah complex?

NO DEAL.

Hillary 08!

Comment by s. hall | 2008-07-26 14:52:08

madamab — You think Obama is young? The guy is pushing 50 and is no youth. McCain has more experience in his little finger and sacrificed more for his country that Obama ever would. One is a Citizen of the world and the other is an AMERICAN HERO. I resent you calling McCain a doddering old man–I don’t care who you vote for. We need to respect our heroes–we have so few of them.

Comment by MEchelle Hates America! | 2008-07-26 15:36:41

Just try and keep up with McCain’s schedule if you think he isn’t tough enough.

I resent your use of

doddering old fool

.

We buried a beloved 94 year old yesterday and he was sharp as a tack.

He died from a staph infection that he got in the hospital.

He was still effectively working to improve the lives of vets.

There isn’t a 40 year old on the planet who I would have trusted as much.

The election should be about character and experience or the lack there of, not some bullshit homecoming King or Queen contest.

Comment by madamab | 2008-07-26 16:46:33

I never said Obama was young. He is a rookie. That means he has no experience. You can be a rookie at 85.

And I respect people who vote McCain, and I respect his service to his country, but the man is at least as gaffetastic as Obama. Let’s get real here, he doesn’t seem to have it together. He’s running a simply dreadful campaign.

Maybe he’ll pull it together after the convention, but right now both candidates are unacceptable to me.

Again, that’s just my opinion.

Before Obama, the Clintons owned the democratic party. They nurtured the party through putting in place a number of operatives. they were and to a great extent still are the establishment democratic party. You act as if Hillary was Rosie the Waitress. The Clintons hobknob with the richest people on earth and can’t pump their own gas much less pour their own coffee. If you believe the Clintons weren’t the democratic party you haven’t been following their activities.

Comment by hank48188 | 2008-07-26 16:26:11

The DEMS never really liked the Clintons. Bill Clinton won in ‘92 because the rest of the DEMS thought Bush was a lock for re-election and didn’t run. This was right after Desert Storm, Bush was super-popular, so was the war. Clinton wasn’t a far left wingnut, that is what the Party insiders always want, leftwing losers. Just look at this Primary season, it was a set-up for Obama, they threw out 2 of Hillarys best States, Michigan and Florida and three States had both a Primary and Caucus, with the delegates allocated by the CAUCUS instead of the DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY. German reporters on the ground in Berlin only saw 20,000 people on hand to hear BO. But the FOX banner on this video reads, 200,000 people were there. Was FOX on this trip? Where did you get your numbers?

And did the photographs, angle shots, and camera feeds originate with German news; BO’s campaign; or US MSM? It matters.

If you have the stomach for it, listen to his speech again and then listen to the crowd. Also, look at the crowd as the camera pans. You will see and hear distinct individual voices trying to egg on the crowd.
While watching the crowd, you can see individuals sprea
