Former Trauma Doctor From Landstuhl Slams Obama’s Cancelled Trip

Earlier this week,
CW4 (Ret) Michael J. Durant
issued a statement condemning Obama’s canceled troop visit. CW4 (Ret) Durant’s capture in Mogadishu was the subject of the movie, BlackHawk Down. And once more we hear from a voice in the past. A voice that understands the troops lying in beds in hospitals far from family and friends.

Yesterday, July 31, McCain’s campaign issued the following statement from Dr. Danny Jazarevic, former Chief of Trauma, Critical Care and Vascular Surgery at Landstuhl concerning Obama’s canceled visit to Ramstein and Landstuhl:

“Last week, Senator Obama skipped a visit with wounded U.S. troops at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany because the Pentagon would not allow campaign staff or media to accompany him into the hospital. I served as director of trauma surgery at that hospital for nearly four years and saw the effect that a visit from a celebrity like Senator Obama could have on morale. During that time, I do not recall a single member of Congress canceling a visit with the troops despite being just a few hours away, but Senator Obama seems to have been more concerned with how the visit would affect him than how it would affect the soldiers recovering from wounds received in the service of their country.”

Here is Dr. Danny Jazarevic’s history of service to not just our country but severely wounded troops:

Dr. Danny Jazarevic served as the Chief of Trauma, Critical Care and Vascular Surgery at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center. In 1984, Dr. Jazarevic joined the United States Army and later the Florida National Guard. He has since served in Honduras, Africa, Saudi Arabia, Bosnia, and Iraq. From December 2002 through January 2006, Dr. Jazarevic was assigned to the U.S. Army Hospital in Landstuhl, Germany, where he served as Chief of Trauma, Critical Care and Vascular Surgery. During this period, he deployed to Iraq numerous times, including with the 101st Airborne Division Forward Surgical Team and as Director of Operations for the 44th U.S. Army Medical Command. He is currently the Chief Trauma Surgeon at a civilian medical center in Florida, and also serves as a full Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve. Dr. Jazarevic has been awarded the Bronze Star Medal.

Voices from the past echo Obama’s actions in Germany. Once again we must question Obama’s judgment, good or bad? The decision is yours. However, Obama has a long laundry list of questionable judgment decisions. And now it involves our injured men and women who are serving or have served giving Obama the opportunity to run for president. He throws them under the bus!

While we’re all busy inflating our tires, I suggest Obama take time to deflate his ego.

I don’t care for his reason for not visiting the wounded troops. He could have a million and they still wouldn’t sit well with me.

The fact of the matter the man had the opportunity and didn’t do it. That speaks volumes about him.

Comment by Skiron | 2008-08-01 15:02:14

He visited with injured vets at Walter Reed numerous times, with no reporters present. He also visited with them in Iraq. So your outrage is misplaced.

Comment by Elizabeth Reilly | 2008-08-01 15:15:28

Misplaced outrage? I think not! Photo ops are all that Obama is truly interested in. How did the news about his other hospital visits get out? Perhaps, just maybe, his campaign staff put the information out there? Perhaps they only lately realized the potential for great photo ops from such a visit!
The man is a phony, a shameful excuse for an American, and a man who collects the most gullible, infantile, Woodstockian members of American society as his followers. They are no more intelligent than the cultists who followed Jim Jones, or any of the other mentally weak cultists who fall for the promises of other Messiahs. I feel sorry for you fools.

Comment by Skiron | 2008-08-01 15:47:28

Obama introduced the “Dignity for Wounded Warriors Act of 2007″ after the deplorable conditions at Walter Reed hospital came to light. The intent of the act was to “cut red tape, improve service, and require frequent inspections of all active duty military hospitals”. Doesn’t sound to me like the behavior of someone only interested in photo ops with the troops…

Comment by inconquisitor | 2008-08-01 15:50:46

Did it Pass? This great bill he introduced?
Did he write it? Probably not.

Comment by Skiron | 2008-08-01 15:56:26

You are cynical beyond belief.

Comment by WildChild | 2008-08-01 15:58:23

we’ll take that as a no.

Comment by Skiron | 2008-08-01 16:02:51

How is the question of whether it passed or not relevant to his concern for the troops? Do you think he introduced the bill only to want it to fail?

Comment by WildChild | 2008-08-01 16:08:19

Anybody can slap a bill together after a national media outcry. Thats not evidense of concern for the troops.

Comment by Skiron | 2008-08-01 16:14:46

But not many did, did they? Did Hillary?
And by the way, tell me, what do you consider evidence of concern for the troops? I’m curious because it seems your definition is very narrow indeed.

Comment by WildChild | 2008-08-01 16:22:46

well let’s see, as the chairman on the Subcommittee on European Affairs which oversight authority on US forces being deployed to Afghanistan, BOBO having subcommittee meetings on troop deployments would have surely been evidense that he had some concern for the troops…

Comment by maria | 2008-08-01 16:31:19

Yes Wildchild he has such great concern for the troops that he never once held a meeting because “he was too busy running for president”. He said as much during the Russert/Williams debate against Hillary. Unfortunately the media was as mesmerized then as they are now, by the one we have been waiting for and didn’t bother to make a big deal about this small detail. Yet they continues to run on how Iraq was wrong and Afghanistan is what matters. Unbelievable

Comment by Skiron | 2008-08-01 16:32:47

And if he came out that he did hold such a meeting, your quite predictable response would be “pffft…anyone can hold a meeting. that’s not evidence of concern for the troops”. There’s nothing he could do that would satisfy you at this point.

Comment by WildChild | 2008-08-01 16:36:20

Actually anybody can’t hold a Subcommittee on European Affairs meeting, so no I wouldn’t have said that. Perhaps you’d like to try your hand at flailing about one more time?

Hey nitwit. We appreciate (not) that you are cutting and pasting excuses from Obama’s web site, but the truth is: it was only his second visit to Iraq and he went because he is trying to bamboozle voters into believing he is fit to be CIC. He hasn’t held a single hearing for the committee he chairs that is critical to our efforts in Afghanistan.

Talk is cheap, and he does a lot of it. The only person Obama has shown that he really “cares” about is himself.

Comment by james | 2008-08-01 17:13:12

You’re the ones who seem to be blinded by their own smoke screen.

“John McCain skipped close to a dozen votes on Iraq, and on at least another 10 occasions he voted against arming and equipping the troops, providing adequate rest for the troops between deployments and for health care or other benefits for veterans.”

Talk is cheap. But the facts speak for themselves:

(Comments wont nest below this level)

Comment by WildChild | 2008-08-01 17:17:40

so basically you’re still pissed that McCain wouldn’t support your proposed troop pull out. But then he never let on that he would.

Comment by james | 2008-08-01 17:33:16

I’m basically pissed that his votes on veterans and active service troop care and safety have never matched his talk about how concerned he is about them.

Troop draw-down is a separate issue on which legitimate differences of opinion exist.

Comment by WildChild | 2008-08-01 17:40:41

Active duty troops get medical care and there is really no safe place in a war zone.

Comment by james | 2008-08-01 18:00:01

The April and October 2003 votes were about increased funding for adequately armored Hum_Vees, body armor for infantry, etc. Our guys were beginning to get clobbered by IEDs back then. The increased funding bills were budget-neutral. The money was to be diverted from already-approved Iraq reconstruction funds. 2004 and 2006 bills to increase veterans’ health services were also budget-neutral. The money was to come from closing some egrevious corporate tax loopholes. There were 3 increased veterans’ funding bills and ammendments in 2006 alone that he voted against. In September 2007 he voted against the Webb ammendment calling for adequate troop rest between deployments. I have trouble reconciling all that with John McCain’s personal military record. It’s hard for me to take sides against another vet, but I can’t just disregard his votes.

Comment by WildChild | 2008-08-01 18:05:39

So exactly what did adequately armored Humvee mean? Adequately a BOBO term. People can read into it whatever they want.

Comment by james | 2008-08-01 18:50:59

The standard armor of troop carriers originally deployed to Iraq was easily penetrated by IEDs, armor-piercing rounds, and RPGs. I recall a couple of television exposes about the problem.

One Major General on the ground in Iraq had been pleading for upgraded vehicle armor through channels since 2003. He got no action until 2005.

http://www.defensetech.org/archives/001349.html

Infantry in Iraq were sometimes reduced to trying to buying ceramic personal body armor themselves. Some 40,000 troops had been deployed with inadequate protection–without even Kevlar Interceptor vests–which greatly increased their vulnerability to sniper fire.
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,101061,00.html

Comment by WildChild | 2008-08-01 19:18:48

That doesn’t answer my question. An IED creates a physical event. There’s always a compression wave and there may or may not be shrapnel. You say McCain voted against a bill to increase funding for adequately armored humvees. But adequately is a BOBO term. You can read what you want into it. Short of producing any specks, we can’t really say whether the armor would have been adequate. It may of been a big hand out to a defense contractor with limited return for the troops. It may have been the real deal. We don’t know. But we do know McCain supports the troops and that he doesn’t like wasting tax payer money.

Comment by james | 2008-08-02 03:50:54

Diverting funds dollar-for-dollar from Iraqi reconstruction to safer equipment for the troops doesn’t strike me as wasteful of taxpayer money. Troop safety strikes me as a far higher priority. This was Dodd Amdt. No. 1817 to S.1689, which McCain voted to table. The ammendment was tabled, by a vote of 47 to 37. http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=108&session=1&vote=00376

I can’t quote specs for what constitutes “adequate armor”. I only know that the troop carriers originally deployed essentially didn’t have any. Troops were outfitting their vehicles with “hillbilly armor”. (Their term, not mine.) They were trying to protect themselves by welding on salvaged steel plates and stacking the floors with sandbags. “Not adequate”, to my way of thinking.

The fact that the DoD eventually recognized the problem and began ordering more protective vehicles surely tells us something.

I recently saw a video of a soldier being knocked down by a sniper in Iraq, only to get up a moment later and scurry for cover. His ceramic plate body armor saved his life. Had he been wearing one of the Kevlar vests originally issued to troops, he’d be dead. A lot of the soldiers we first deployed didn’t even get those. This is another situation I define as “inadequate”.

Comment by WIldChild | 2008-08-02 11:16:46

So diverting funds that would rebuild Iraq, give its people jobs, get them out of their squalor and probably give them something better to do then blow up Americans is a good idea? LOL Nah, it’s a bad one. And the amendment you gave me wasn’t an amendment for anything. It was just throwing money at the problem with no accountability because there was no specifics. That amendment was what I said before, a give away to defense contractors. By the time they were done fighting over the cash who knows what the troops would have been left with. McCain was right to oppose that.

He’s visited Walter Reed numerous times? And that has what to do with Landstuhl? Nada. Nothing. Zip. Zilch.

Comment by Skiron | 2008-08-01 16:20:46

Er, yes it does, because the claims being leveled against him are that he doesn’t visit the troops, or if he does it’s only for photo ops, etc. The fact that he visited Walter Reed on a number of occasions, with reporters kept outside the hospital, along with his visit in Iraq, should disabuse anyone of those notions.

Comment by WildChild | 2008-08-01 16:26:34

The absence of the press release prior the visits and the characterization of the visit as being “solemn” might have disabused people of these notions

Comment by Katmoon | 2008-08-01 16:35:09

The only thing it should have to do with Landstuhl is he knew the rules in advance, and tried to pull one over, it didn’t work.

Comment by pm317 | 2008-08-01 16:23:40

It is irrelevant he went to Walter Reed or how many times. What matters is he did not fulfill his obligation in Germany and that to over flimsy reasons. Shows his character or lack of it.

Comment by Idiocracy08 | 2008-08-01 16:48:00

It is easier to have your family visit you in Walter Reed. They are as close to home they can get…and are in the US. In Germany, these soldiers are homesick.

Comment by Brodie | 2008-08-01 18:03:01

Oh, piss off, Skiron- one thing doesn’t count for another. He didn’t visit them THIS TIME when he clearly was a. there and b. had the time. He should WANT to visit the troops if he is nearby- just because of what the Dr. said- it means so much to them and asks so little from him. He’s just too damned selfish, self-serving and arrogant to put their needs over his own. And you want an ass like that for prez? Give me a break- just go away and peddle your crapola elsewhere.

The outrage is that of Michael J. Durant and Dr. Danny Jazarevic, former Chief of Trauma, Critical Care and Vascular Surgery at Landstuhl. Are you saying that they are wrong?

You must be very scared about your candidates fortunes thus far, or you wouldn’t be here trying to hijack and distort the thrust of the post away from reporting Durant and Jazarevic’s critique of Senator Obama by inferring that the outrage is ours alone.

You should be scared. Obama is done.

Comment by navyvet48 | 2008-08-02 03:50:10

Not really Obama said himself he did not go see the troops because he couldn’t take his campaign aide with him. The Pentagon said he could visit as long as it was part of a Congressional Tour. Yeah! I have a right to be incensed about his canceled trip. I am a disabled Navy veteran. These people will more than likely be disabled too!

Comment by Clinton Fan | 2008-08-01 21:37:08

I agree with you, and I agree with the doctor about the morale issue…and that’s not just for the patients, that’s for the staff as well, who in times like this, have to work doubly hard and deal with the pain of losing patients or seeing them so debilitated, with little hope for recovery, but having to remain upbeat and positive for their sakes.

Anyone who has been in the military knows what sort of preparations are made in advance of a visit by a Distinguished Visitor. Wax is stripped from floors, the “buffer brigade” goes out in force, every surface is cleaned to gleaming, uniforms are picked and scalded, there’s a line to get haircuts…the whole nine yards. Many EXTRA hours in addition to regular duty hours are spent getting ready for the visit.

They did all that, on top of their regular duties, which are much more onerous than they are when there aren’t so many casualties to attend to, and they got their hopes up…and the asshole didn’t show.

It’s like some kid waiting for Santa, and getting nothing.

He’s a jerk. He doesn’t get it, because he did not serve. “The troops” are not a BORG. Visiting them in Afghanistan or Iraq doesn’t mean you can blow them off, after you PROMISE, in Germany.

Comment by navyvet48 | 2008-08-02 03:51:42

I call it the “dog and pony” show. I did many of those when I was active duty because my ship was the “show me ship”.

Comment by fif | 2008-08-01 17:02:44

This also reveals a fundamental and critical issue for the election: WHO UNDERSTANDS OUR MILITARY AND FEELS GENUINE EMPATHY FOR THEM? WHO IS PREPARED TO BE COMMANDER IN CHIEF?

This is not just an ordinary Congressman doing the rounds. This is someone who is applying to be CIC–the ultimate military authority. I find it astonishing that anyone thinks this self-centered neophyte is in any way ready for that responsibility.

Anybody who has served in the military or has any level of patriotism, especially a candidate for president should be especially attuned to the challenges facing members of the military and, in particular, those wounded soldiers laying in a hospital. I’ve lost track of the excuses Obama and his cult following, including the MSM, have spewed out over this incredible disrespect. Add to this his comment about telling the military what to do, his slight back on Memorial Day where he focused on everything but the miliary, and you begin to get a picture of someone disdainful of the military except as a toy that he can wield. Very dangerous, very immature.

Comment by Lou | 2008-08-01 15:23:34

I have been saying this since last Thanksgiving, that Obama is not a Patriot and neither is his roommate wife.
Now is the time for everyone to come out from every corner of the nation and go to Denver to peacefully make Hillary our nominee. Remember, she suspended her campaign, she didn’t end it.
Super delegates-As Obama’s ego grows, so does the budding discontent within his base and the party.

Save America. Make Hillary our nominee! Hillary is the one who is qualified to lead. Put this bozo Obama out to pasture.
Those who backed Obama will work twice as hard for Hillary to cleanse themselves of their political naivety. Put a Dem back in the whitehouse-Hillary! She’s a patriot and respects the troops. A man called her up recently during the primaries about the mold and rotten conditions in the barracks-Hillary took care of it. Super D’s and pledged delegates-YOU CAN CHANGE YOUR MIND-IT’s your patriotic duty to pick the person best able to lead. Hands down that’s Hillary! Don’t buy into Obamas politics of fear. Push BACK! Everyone go to Denver. Delegates vote for Hillary. America is crying for you to put Hillary in the whitehouse.
Now go to it!

Folks this is what hillary said in repeating and and dramatizing Obama’s own words I believe before the OH and TX primary. The MSM made it appear that these were her own words trying to mock Obama. They did this by not showing the beginning of her remarks where she attributed the comments as Obama’s exact words. I think the McCain campaign filed that one away for future reference. The ass*hole Obama said it, Hillary brought it to the attention of the media, they covered for Obama.

This should be on the front page. It’s going viral. I’ve seen it on 10 sites already and I wasn’t even looking for it. The Obama supporters are invading the Republican sites posing as Republicans who say this is beneath McCain and some of them even say they will now vote for Obama. It’s hilarious seeing the Obamabots scrambling like this and no one is buying the faux outrage. Notice how they’re not here right now? That’s why. On YouTube, it’s been copied plenty of times that you don’t even need to go on McCain account anymore. Tons of users have it listed.

The funniest part is the Obamabots who scream that the “light coming down” is taken out of context. They don’t understand satire and what this will do more than anything is show how the Obama campaign is devoid of a sense of humour and fun.

Probably the best political ad ever.

Is he TRYING to lose?

That is, seriously, a very good question you just posed.

Maybe he’s having second thoughts, fucking up deliberately, and then he can scuttle safely home, say he was “the first” to go as far as he did (if you don’t count another corrupt son of a bitch, the light, bright and passing Warren Harding) and blame “The Man” for all his woes.

Obama visited troops in Iraq without cameras or staff. Why would you think he would suddenly care about it in Germany? Even the McCain campaign backed off this attack and it really only continues to thrive on sites like these. Moreover, there have been reliable reports that the McCain campaign had two attack ad scripts ready: one if he visited and another if he didn’t. (Please see BusinessWeek at http://www.businessweek.com/the_thread/brandnewday/archives/2008/07/the_new_normal.html)

Please also see the former Chief of Medical Operations statement on this issue..”Dr. Katherine Scheirman, who was Chief of Medical Operations during Operation Iraqi Freedom, said in a statement:

“John McCain’s new ad is dishonest and shameful, and I say that as the former Chief of Medical Operations. Senators Hagel and Reed confirmed to Bob Schieffer yesterday that Senator Obama visited the Combat Support Hospital in Baghdad as a part of their CODEL, with no media present.

“In Germany, Senator Obama made the right decision to respect wounded troops, and the doctors and nurses doing crucial and time-sensitive work, by not making a visit that was characterized as a campaign event by the Pentagon. Senator Obama should be thanked for putting our military above politics. And, I would hope that John McCain would think in those same terms, the next time he is put in a similar situation.

“Senator Obama has voted for the troops when John McCain has not, most recently on the new GI Bill. I am happy that Senator Obama puts the welfare of our troops above politics.”

Obama visited troops in Iraq without cameras or staff. Why would you think he would suddenly care about it in Germany?

Exactly, so why did he care so much about it?
The Pentagon only said he was not supposed to bring the media with him. He did it before. Why didn’t he do it again?

Comment by Dan | 2008-08-01 14:45:18

No, if you look, he did *not* bring the media in Iraq. That’s why the idea that he would suddenly only visit the troops *with* the media in Germany doesn’t hold up.

Comment by DoroB | 2008-08-01 14:48:26

Right, but that was the excuse that he used–that it would be a campaign event. Well it wasn’t a campaign event in Iraq and it didn’t have to be a campaign event in Germany. It’s simple: just show up like he did before.

I get what you are driving at, but my understanding is that once Hagel and Reed left the trip (before Germany), the trip stopped being a Congressional Delegation and the Pentagon framed it as a campaign trip. So, I think the classification of the trip changed and Obama was faced with the prospect of being seen as trying to score political points off wounded troops.

Comment by WildChild | 2008-08-01 15:02:33

or…. BOBO could have visited the wounded troops

Comment by Dan | 2008-08-01 15:05:13

Yes, and as the Business Week article I cited notes, McCain would have attacked him on that too. Also, regardless of the politics, I think the last thing any decent person would want is to be seen as exploiting the troops.

Comment by WildChild | 2008-08-01 15:10:27

Business Week has no idea what McCain would have done in an alternative circumstance. BOBO alone, without props, visiting the troops couldn’t be viewed as exploitation.

he should of shut up and gone without all this rigmarole….

he cannot do anything without shouting about it or needing the cameras showing how wonderful he is

he’s a sad case to put himself forward to run for the highest position in the land

the citizens of the USA deserve the best
not a show stopper stomper
yes we can yes we will??? WHAT THE HELL IS THAT???

YES WE WILL all show him in November who can do it!

Comment by beebop | 2008-08-01 15:14:58

He could have gone alone. Period. He — as others have pointed out — managed to meet with HRC without the media being tipped off. When it’s important, you do it. No questions asked. He and his Major General stuck their chins out at the hospital and wouldn’t take no for an answer. He could have gone alone. Do you have a “business week” answer for that?

Comment by Isolde | 2008-08-01 15:27:55

He has Secret Service so he is really never alone, so he would have only been without a campaign worker. Can’t he talk to the staff and patients without a helper?

Sometimes the right thing to do is also the best thing to do for you politically. Obama could have visited the troops and then “righteously” attacked any McCain snipes by proposing measures to improve health care for veterans and active duty. It is beyond stupid not to be able to see the politics and how to counter any negatives to your planned iterinary. That article just underscores the ineptitude of the Obama campaign.

This is the worst scenario that has played out for him and demonstrates again that Obama and his team are not ready for prime time. Your campaign should anticipate and actually be proactive in this.

On the money.

They are back on their heels because they expected the Empty Suit Tour to give him a boost. Now they are making HUGE gaffes and mistakes … pulling the race card out before the convention can’t have been part of the plan.

On the other hand, the McCain ads are perfect. And on the money. And appeal to the American’s that voted for Hill. They are doing all of the right things. Now. They just need to nail him down to a debate. And this would be a good time to try to negotiate that. He SUCKS at debate.

Assuming that Obama visits the wounded troops without cameras, reporters, or any other type of publicity and then gets attacked by McCain, wouldn’t it still be better than not visiting the troops and being (rightly) attacked for making the wrong decision? If he really is going to be attacked either way, it’s better to be attacked because of doing the right thing.
As I see it, Obama would not lose anything if he had visited the troops by himself. It could only have been a gain for him.

Comment by MsSoAnd So | 2008-08-01 15:25:26

Dan the point is, it would have been the moral thing to do. If McCain attacked Obama for doing the morally correct thing that would have reflected bad on McCain for being so negative on such a generous act.

But of course Obama doesn’t have it in him, sooooooooooo no visit.

Comment by imustprotest | 2008-08-01 15:47:59

And….do the wounded troops care if it was a visit that was “technically” political or “technically” senate business?? No. Because, cameras/no cameras those brave men and women will still be lying there in those hospital beds! This isn’t about YOU obama….it’s about THEM!
