Obama Denies that He Has Shifted His Position on Off-Shore Drilling

Why am I not surprised?

“This wasn’t really a new position. What I’m saying is that we can’t drill our way out of the problem,” Obama told reporters. “And if we can come up with a genuine bi-partisan compromise in which I have to accept some things I don’t like, or the Democrats have to accept some things that they don’t like, in exchange for actually moving us in the direction of energy independence, then that is something I am open to.”

Let’s see how the press sees it:

Washington Post: Obama’s Shift on Drilling
Los Angeles Times: Major Obama shift on offshore drilling; some might be O.K.
ABC News: Obama Now Open to Off-Shore Drilling
Minneapolis Star-Tribune & McClatchy Newspapers: In major change, Obama says he’ll support offshore drilling
Kansas City Star: Obama shifts his position on offshore oil drilling

So either the press and the rest of us are all wrong and Obama is right OR the entire nation is right and Obama is wrong. Just admit you saw your poll numbers tanking and that you changed your mind. Clearly, McCain has found a winning issue on which to hammer Obama as surprise, “out of touch.” And now Obama just simply has landed himself in a quagmire. He may not look ridiculous but he sure does sound ridiculous. This might just be Obama’s Dukakis in a helmet and riding in a tank moment.

Obama is lying. Think about what just occured. The democrats wouldn’t compromise on a bill that was just up with those very same points in them. So they leave for break, and the NEXT DAY Obama says he is willing to compromise. They did this on purpose, so they wouldn’t have to hold up their end untill after the election….DUH!!! Obama is a snake. He may be THE SNAKE.

Comment by AF catfish | 2008-08-03 00:23:14

He isn’t that smart. If he was going to flip he should have done it before the break. Now they look like jerks who are vacationing while Americans are spending grocery money on gas.

Comment by Darryl | 2008-08-03 00:46:23

Thats my point. That I still hold hope that America isn’t that dumb. I was a democrat till they started to support Obama over Hillary. That was the last straw for me.

Comment by AF catfish | 2008-08-03 00:57:22

Exactly. He could have excercised and shown some leadership with the Dems and Congress for the sake of the entire nation. That would have looked Presidential. That would have been Presidential-like. But this empty suit has nothing in his background that indicates he even knows how to do that. Again, this man is a fake and bad for America.

I heard a commentator say just yesterday that Harry Reid went out of his way to make sure Obama would not have to vote on this issue. After Reid does this for him, Barack turns around and changes his stand.

Did Obama help Gore invent the internet? What can we ever believe, is he serious? Does anyone tell him what his positions are, or does he get the new memory all by himself. He was always in favor of gun rights. He never said he wanted to talk to leaders without preconditions. He was always open to compromise on FISA. I know why he doesn’t think he flip flops, he just changes his reality and probably got away with it in Chicago. There is a reason his campaign wont let the press near him very often and wont do town hall meetings. When he answers questions he shows just how unprepared he is for anything. Why is he even in the Senate.

Comment by jwrjr | 2008-08-03 01:08:03

“Gore is a liar” was manufactured by the republicans. “Obama is a liar” was manufactured by Obama.

Do not, under any circumstances, let Bob Somerby of dailyhowler.com find out that you made that crack about Gore inventing the internet or he will come down on you like a ton of bricks. He still gets apoplectic over the media selling that lie to the public.
Seriously, for those of you who don’t know the facts, Gore once told a reporter who asked him what accomplishments he was proud of about his time in the Senate and Gore said helping create the internet. Acording to many, including Newt Gingrich, this was the absolute truth. Gore never stop pushing his fellow Senators to come up with funding to expand what was then just a network between universities and the government and make it free and open to the public. He kept haranguing them about how it could be the information superhighway, a reference to the effect that Eisenhower’s creating the interstate highway system had on our economy in the 50’s. Apparently Gore drove them crazy, but eventually they did what he wanted.
Republicans did not want the public to know that Gore deserved a lot of credit for this incredible creation so they decided to misquote his as claimin he had “invented” it, then mocked him mercilessly. Our professionals in the media thought this was so much fun they joined in, even though they knew it was a lie. (Chris Matthews once admitted this, then returned to saying it anyway. Pure jealosy.)The rest is history.

What gets Bob Somerby going isn’t just that one quote but a two year war against Al Gore waged by the Print and Broadcast media. A war that put Bush in the White House with the result of thousands of dead Iraqis, American troops and citizens of New Orleans. That war was an extension of the war they waged against the Clintons starting in 1991.

I had an email exchange with him once on Chris Matthews we had both heard a rumor but were never able to confirm it. It was going around that the animosity of Chris Matthews or the late Tim Russert was due to being rejected as Press Secretary.

I guess you have heard that the Obama children will be getting a dog after the election. It will neither be a Christmas gift nor a birthday gift, since they don’t do that kind of thing. They want to teach the children the evils of materialism, while living in their $2.5 million dollar house bought with the help of Resko.

But I digress!! My point is that when they do get the dog, Jesse Jackson has offered to neuter it for them.

Comment by Darryl | 2008-08-03 00:53:00

I have been saying this all along. But you need to look further. Alot of this election (and even I as democrat realize this now) the democrats have been blaming the failings of the America on the republican, when in all reality it was really the Bush Administration. Now we all know bush isn’t really a republican by heart, but is controlled by corporate interest and his own ambition. Obama is the same, he is being fed to us by corporate interests. Why else do you think the media is doing what they are doing. They did it with bush, and now Obama. They are feeding us a product, a puppet, for them to still have controll over our government. It won’t get any better untill people wake up and realize the real situation. I don’t think this election it happened. It almost did, but not quite.

The good news is that eventually, the media’s trust will be out the window. There won’t be a segment left that will even trust anything the news says. Hopefully by then, they won’t begin to censor the internet (although this has been a very strong theme in the Obama campaign). I think though, with the Obama admin, they will do that and then its over. America will be controlled totally by corporations and their ability to controll what you or I see and hear on the TV and Internet.

Comment by ncgal | 2008-08-03 04:45:02

Darryl, you have hit the nail on the head!!!!!!!!

Obama is Pepsi to Bush’s Coke. Two corporate puppets with only a slightly different flavor, although the marketing campaigns tell us there is a huuuuge difference. In the end, no matter which you drink, you end up in poorer health.

It makes me absolutely heartsick to see the Democrats exposed as being just as cynical and dishonest as the “others”.

The sky opened up, the light came down, and you were COMPELLED…yes, COMPELLED, I say, to shout, far and wide:

This Obama guy is the BIGGEST bullshitter I’ve EVER seen!! EVER! He’s even MORE INCOMPETENT and hubris-laden than The Kennebunkport Kowboy!

We do this every four years. You’d think, for once, we’d pick the GOOD candidate for a change.

Actually, since he thinks he’s already the president, I think he was replying “if I have to accept” as the Executive Branch, and “if the Democrats have to accept” as the House and Senate. I think he is having so much fun projecting himself into the role that he forgets he hasn’t even won the nomination officially yet. GAG ME…………

Comment by steven Mather | 2008-08-03 00:54:33

Comment by imustprotest | 2008-08-03 00:58:03

Ah but Steve. he thinks he has 8-10 years! Someone needs to break it to him that each term is only 4 years….4 plus 4 equals 8. Obama needs to be enlightened on this!

Comment by steven Mather | 2008-08-03 01:17:43

This week is going well and is much fun, but, as was said on the program tonight, we are trying to push a large stone uphill (we are not Sisyphus) and I think we’re enjoying the break that a decreased incline can provide.

Notwithstanding, the stone is large and the climb is high. Can 2008 be reclaimed after the DNC/Obama campaign scorched earth policy? Can Hillary be nominated in a way that does not disenfranchise Democratic Obama supporters?

Comment by MEchelle Hates America! | 2008-08-03 10:57:24

He’s right down the middle. He’s making sure he agrees with both sides. I wud have loved to have heard that conversation between BHO and Pelosi on that one. You know she called him and threw in a few expletives. Especially since she turned the lights off as GOP demanded action on drilling. Oooo… I’ll bet she is PISSED!
Nancy, how does it feel under that bus?

Comment by AF catfish | 2008-08-03 00:40:57

He said Nancy, sweetie, you’re periodically feeling down.

Comment by candymarl | 2008-08-03 00:46:50

Sure Nancy is pissed. She thought she and the other leadership could control Obama.

Now they find they can’t. If Obama says he’s willing to compromise it looks like Pelosi and the others aren’t.

He’s boxed them in. If they don’t compromise with the Republicans they’re going against their chosen candidate.

So much for who’s the most loyal Democrat. Hillary took heat from both sides but didn’t change.

Obama exhorted Republicans to be a Democrat for a day and vote for him. That was the most troubling sign for me.

None of this surprises me.

Comment by J. J.. (The P.U.M.A.) | 2008-08-03 00:37:28

All of you Obama haters out there. Get a grip on reality. Obama’s position is clear and consistent on drilling. Let me explain it to you.

He thinks drilling is a bad idea. He thinks it will do nothing to help solve the energy crisis. He thinks it will harm the environment. He thinks it will cost him Ohio and Michigan.

Comment by candymarl | 2008-08-03 00:48:31

Then why is he suddenly for limited drilling that takes the environment into account? That’s the same thing that McCain said.

Comment by J. J.. (The P.U.M.A.) | 2008-08-03 00:53:41

Because, otherwise it will cost him Ohio and Michigan. See, there is nothing inconsistent about his position. His position on drilling is that he must not lose Ohio and Michigan. That is also, by the way, his position on free trade.

Comment by Ferdberfle | 2008-08-03 11:07:17

Gee, what happened to the new politics and change? Seems to me he is more like the old pandering politician.

How many ways can you spell liar?

Comment by candymarl | 2008-08-03 00:56:01

Oh, so this was political calculation for votes in Michigan and Ohio?

But I thought Obama didn’t do that? After all, he’s not like all those other DC politicians.

He’s pure and transcendent.

Comment by J. J.. (The P.U.M.A.) | 2008-08-03 01:00:34

No, of course it is not just about getting votes in Michigan and Ohio. It is also about getting votes in Missouri and Colorado.

When will you get with the program here.

“We are the ones we have been waiting for”.

Comment by candymarl | 2008-08-03 01:18:04

I haven’t been waiting for Obama or anyone else.

I have been waiting for competent and experienced leadership. Not a savior. Obama couldn’t help poor folk in his own district in Chicago keep their heat on. That’s what “we” have been “waiting for”? He helped funnel taxpayer money to slumlords that didn’t fix a thing. That’s what “we” have been “waiting for”?

I’ll never “get with the program”.

I note you don’t deny that he’s taking these positions to garner votes just like any other politician.

But I thought this was the new day? The new way?

He doesn’t need to mean what he says as long as it gets him votes. Sounds like old fashioned politics to me. Nothing new here.

Comment by Lyn | 2008-08-03 01:37:02

I didn’t mean for there to be any doubt about where I was coming from. I was playing along with the sentiments in the parting of the waters ad “The One” that McCain put out. I think it was one of the funniest political ads I ever saw.

In looking back on his political career I have yet to see Obama stick his neck out on any issue. His neck was sticking out on off-shore drilling, so of course he changed his mind.

Is there a political core to Obama. I doubt it.

If you want to elect Hillary in 2012, you can not elect Obama in 2008.

I would love to see and hear this empty suit in a townhall questions and answers session. That would be the day……

Comment by candymarl | 2008-08-03 01:41:52

He’ll never take unscripted questions from the public in a town hall meeting.

I remember seeing Bill Clinton, a sitting President, taking town hall questions from the public. Some folks actually yelled at him and cussed him. When the crowd would boo them Bill would bring that to a halt. He would say that the person had a right to their opinion and to let them finish. Then he would actually answer the question.

If Obama is so much greater than Clinton, JFK, RFK, MLK, FDR, Lincoln and every other leader that came before him why can’t he take unscripted questions from the public?

Someone with that much greatness and vision should be able to handle that.

The One is prescient. Barack Obama does not play all sides - He transcends sides altogether, bringing only His wisdom to bear upon an issue - This is the true power of transformation. People of the World Hear - Obama! Obama!

Where some hear shifting positions - others know and see One who is all encompassing. There is a difference.

End snark.

Another Major Obama Inconsistency

OBAMA: “I mentioned this earlier, I want to tell you that, you know, I know it’s still being reported that we were talking about delaying some aspects of the Constellation program to pay for our early education program. I told my staff we’re going to find an entirely different offset, because we’ve got to make sure that the money that’s going into NASA for basic research and development continues to go there. That has been a top priority for us.” (Barack Obama, Remarks, Titusville, FL, 8/2/08)

HOWEVER:

According To The Early Education Program Plan on Obama’s website, he proposes paying for his program by in part delaying the NASA Constellation Program. “The early education plan will be paid for by delaying the NASA Constellation Program for five years, using purchase cards and the negotiating power of the government to reduce costs of standardized procurement, auctioning surplus federal property, and reducing the erroneous payments identified by the Government Accountability Office, and closing the CEO pay deductibility loophole. The rest of the plan will be funded using a small portion of the savings associated with fighting the war in Iraq.” (Obama For America, “Barack Obama’s Plan For Lifetime Success Through Education,” http://www.barackobama.com, 11/20/07)

Actually it’s the Repub’s fault. They made him flip flop and are forcing him to be like them. But, really I’m a nice guy that graduated from Harvard, I’m intelligent! NOT!

Where’s the “Obama throws environmentalists under the bus” headline? Are bloggers getting lazy? :-)

Anyone know how the blogger boyz are taking this latest gem?
How many times can the Progressive Brown Shirts swallow their agenda and defend a complete reversal?
First FISA, and now they can kiss goodbye any serious support for alternative fuels. That isn’t going to happpen, Obama just assured it.
I thought they believed they wouldn’t have to comprise their ideals with both the White House and Congress in the hands of Democrats?
That was the whole point of demonizing Hillary wasn’t it? No more compromising, right? No more “triangulating”, we want a new kid of politics, blah blah blah.
Stone cold idiots, every last one.
