The Latest Florida Poll [Update]

No wonder Barack Obama is scrambling to pander to those in favor of off-shore drilling. When even Floridians are changing their minds about off-shore drilling, it’s hard for some, apparently, to hold fast to their “beliefs” (if they have any). [UPDATE: See LisaB's Polls and Race-Bait Fallout."] Via the Tampa Bay blog, part of the St. Petersburg Times newspaper:

New Florida poll: McCain 45, Obama 40

In a new poll released by the Florida Chamber of Commerce, 45 percent of Florida voters said they would vote for Sen. John McCain if the presidential election were held today. Forty percent said they would vote for Sen. Barack Obama. Fifteen percent were undecided. …

The Palm Beach Post has another story, “Obama would consider off-shore drilling as part of comprehensive energy plan” — and notes that both McCain and Obama were campaigning in Florida yesterday:

ST. PETERSBURG — U.S. Sen. Barack Obama said today he would be willing to open Florida’s coast for more oil drilling if it meant winning approval for broad energy changes.

“My interest is in making sure we’ve got the kind of comprehensive energy policy that can bring down gas prices,” Obama said in an interview with The Palm Beach Post.

“If, in order to get that passed, we have to compromise in terms of a careful, well thought-out drilling strategy that was carefully circumscribed to avoid significant environmental damage - I don’t want to be so rigid that we can’t get something done,” Obama said.

Off-shore drilling has become a push-button issue in the presidential campaign since Republican candidate John McCain announced his support to open more of the country’s coastline for drilling in order to reduce gas prices. Both candidates are campaigning in Florida today.

Obama has opposed exposing more coastline to drilling, saying that oil companies have not fully explored the areas open to drilling now and insisting that it would have little immediate impact on prices at the pump.

After speaking to a capacity crowd at Gibbs High School auditorium in St. Petersburg, he told the Post he would be open to expanding the current drilling boundaries if it meant winning approval for more fuel-efficient cars, developing alternative energy sources and making the country more “energy independent.”

“I think it’s important for the American people to understand we’re not going to drill our way out of this problem,” he said. … Read all.

mr flip flop says anything to get the votes…watch and wait for all the other flip flops to come from his nasty mouth..he is really arrogant..

Comment by mimi | 2008-08-02 13:15:57

I want to discuss this ‘arrogant‘ label for a minute since it’s a bone of contention with regard to AAs.

It is true that historically that AAs who owned their humanity were considered arrogant, i.e., they didn’t know their place. That ‘place‘ was as a slave.

But in the context of this election, the term used to describe 0bama is one that he has earned. He’s hiding behind the historical reference and trying to exploit it for his own personal goal.

In the broader context, arrogant people, those who are full of themselves with undue pride and a sense of self-importance, also implies persons who are not necessarily bright or intelligent. If you look at the people in your own circle that you would describe as arrogant, it’s probably also true that they are this way without any basis for feeling so prideful.

What exactly has 0bama accomplished in his life that compels people to feel that he is the One. He’s won several elections, all under dubious circumstances, including this one. He is not MLK. He’s not even Malcolm X or Abe Lincoln.

He’s a politician who has yet to prove himself. Yet, he’s full of himself. And he’s trying to get elected on the premise that he’s an AA and therefore deserves to win.

People need more.

His routine got old fast.

And once Hillary was out of the picture, he’s frankly, boring.

He stands for nothing. He can’t even use his old stand-by, the Iraq War, because the Surge, which he was against, has worked.

So exactly why is he the nominee again?

Comment by Katmoon | 2008-08-02 13:58:10

mimi, so well said. The sad thing is most people who choose to use arrogance as a racist term, simply prefer to, not in an application of without experience or merit. I concur.

Comment by trixta | 2008-08-02 14:46:59

So true, Mimi. The words arrogance and presumptuous apply to Obama not because he is an AA, but because his words and actions reflect the very meanings of those words. To try to recontextualize these and other words to imply racism is not just ridiculous, but manipulative! Luckily, the American public is catching on. Sorry, Precious, but you can only cry wolf so many times! As a person of color, I resent his crying wolf because he makes talking about race in a substantive matter impossible. Obama is not post-racial; he’s uber-racial!

Also, I agree that without HRC the coverage of this election b/w BO and JM is pretty boring!

Comment by Kelly | 2008-08-02 15:03:43

“Uppity” used to be the code word. (from slavery- for those who worked in the house; modern day I believe it is still used within AA commmunity for “sellouts”.) Can no longer use uppity because Rep branded Hillary as such. Uppity for Hillary because she does not know her place.

obama is arrogant.

He also uses a lot of his blue blood heritage to show the world that he’s royalty. Like the other day when he challenged McCain it a duel.Barry is in act descended from the Pilgrims and some relation to the common ancestor of Wild Bill Hickok: Thomas blossom.
I think he has a tough time relating to AA issues, like poverty. His advice is just eat less, turn up the thermostat and inflate your tires.
McCain has more compassion by a mile by the shear fact that he adopted a dying Bangladesh baby. She is not AA, but a lot of Americans only see skin color.
I wouldn’t be at all surprised if McCain chose Bobby Jindal for VP.

Gallup has ‘em tied at 44-44 again. http://www.gallup.com/poll/109180/Gallup-Daily-McCain-Obama-Remain-Tied.aspx

I wish they’d do an occasional update poll with Hillary as the possibility. We know she was outpolling Obamaniacal before.

I just sent an e-mail to Gallup suggesting they include Hillary once a week or so. In fact the website asks for comments:

This from today’s Rasmussen report of their daily tracking poll.

Barack Obama attracts 44% of the vote while John McCain earns 43%. When “leaners” are included, it’s Obama 47% and McCain 46%.

What is even more interesting is this:

New data released today shows that the number of Americans who consider themselves to be Democrats fell in July.

Looks like PUMAs are leaving the party.

Comment by Bigtime | 2008-08-02 13:15:04

Fell for the second straight month. That means since the illegal activities of the DNC/RBC, Dem membership has fallen by 2.5% . That is a lot of PUMA’s. I changed to unaffiliated, after 30+ years democrat, on June 2nd 2008.

Country before Party.

Comment by okasha skatsi | 2008-08-02 13:37:30

And that drop probably doesn’t even count those of us in states, such as Texas, that don’t register voters by party at all. We have open primaries, and your registration card is stamped “Voted Democratic(or Republican)” when you request your ballot. I know a lot of life-long Dem voters who decided months ago to go with McCain if Obama was the nominee. Even in my dependably deep blue county, with exactly ZERO elected Republican office-holders, a local newspaper’s poll shows McCain coming in at close to 40%, with about 5% going for Nader and Bob Barr.

And that, in turn, means Obama’s in serious trouble with Hispanic voters, even though it may not be showing up in polls that don’t differentiate between, say, Mexican Americans in South Texas and Cubans in Miami.

Barry is Kerry.

The SD’s should flip flop and run Clinton.

gotalife — This time Obama threw Pelosi under the bus. She refused to hold a vote on Drilling because she knew Obama was against it and moderate Democrats were going to vote with Republicans. Obama is only loyal to Obama.

The next day he reverses himself, leaving Americans to question the audacity of Pelosi in not addressing these pressing economic concerns. Of course, she is on of the wealthiest women in Congress, so she’s not really being affected by the crisis.

So if repubs bash him on any issue during this campaign, it appears Obama will eventually capitulate.

Hardliner agianst retro immunity w/FISA — caves in and votes for retro immunity

Firm adherent to the standard Dem policy against offshore drilling — caves in to drilling.

Firm adherent to immediate withdrawal from Iraq — caves to a tempered view, then un-caves, then re-caves, then…who can keep track.

Blames NAFTA for woes in rust belt, then after some pressure from freetraders & Canada decides NAFTA isn’t so bad, then later decides NAFTA is pretty bad, then later…auuugh, who can keep track.

The guy “won” (cough) enough delegates in the caucuses and some primaries by being the candidate of the pure left-wing of the party. And now that that pesky Hillary has been shoved aside by screamin’ Howie, he can get back to politics as usual.

The DU, Kos, and TPM gang backed a purist and got ripped off. Its rare that the ripoff is so evident before an election — heck, before the candidate is actually nominated!!!!

I have to imagine that supers are secretly thinking they should’ve shut up and not gone along with the tidal wave of BO love in late May/early June. And now they’re stuck because they don’t have the courage to vote how they really think now.

Kerry or Hillary would have a 7+ point national lead right now. Edwards (minus the obvious affair now - idiot) would be up 5+.

In this climate, just about any Dem should win easily this year. But more and more this is smelling like another Ned Lamont pick by our pals in the netroots.

HRC would win by 8-11.
Give 3% to the third party candidates
Therefore:

HRC: 53%
McCain: 44%
Third: 3%

With Obama,

I would give the third parties 6% (more disaffected voters).

McCain: 48.5%
Obama: 45.5%
Third: 6%

Comment by AX10 | 2008-08-02 13:49:36

Considering the state of the nation as a result
of mostly Bush/GOP policies, that 3% win for McCain is a 1984 style blowout.

Pelosi is under the mistaken impression she can control him. Because of his lack of information, experience, and stance on issues as well as his well-known habit of being lazy and just riding other’s coat tails on legislation ( just showing up for the press conferences). But Nancy is wrong, wrong, wrong. You can’t control an egomanic and Nobama is for nothing except himself. Her eyes are premanently frozen in a wide-eyed position from all the bo-tox. She should have seen this coming. She was so afraid Hillary would steal her glory but Nobama is going to cost her her crown.

annie — that is the great question–why do they continue to promote BO? Yesterday Pelosi put her arm around Obama’s waist as they walked off together.

To say this is unusual for Party leaders to so embrase one candidate would be an understatement. When Clinton was running in 1992 party leaders went out of their way to say that the Presidential election had nothing to do with their elections.

That has been the most puzzling aspect of this entire election season for me. Why the big push for this neophyte? I have read many articles and posts on many sites and I still for the life of me cannot figure out what Dean, Pelosi, and Reid are up to. Brazille I understand. She just wants a black man elected President and she wants power.

My best guess is that it is just hatred of the Clintons. And that in itself is puzzling and troublesome. I have some concerns about some things that occured during president Clinton’s term of office too. But I do not hate him. And I think he was far better than his detractors portray him. And Hillary is her own person with her own ideas.

William Clinton is the only two-term Democratic President since FDR. The Clinton’s were great fund raisers for the DNC. And So the hatred and desire to purge the DNC of these two good folks is very puzzling.

I wish I knew WHY the DNC supports Obama and what they are up to. Whatever the reason it is tearing the traditional Democratic party apart and that is very sad for the future of this country and for the regular working class citizen of America that FDR championed.

Comment by Pollpatrol | 2008-08-02 13:46:09

The simplest theory I can come up with is Donna and Howie decided after Kerry’s loss that the Democratic party needed to be redefined and rebranded. They wanted to attract the youth vote and minorities - two large voting blocks that are very apathetic about voting. They decided that someone like Obama could attract these blocks while Hillary would not. Plus they perceived HRC as unable to connect with voters before this primary. So they sold their souls to Obama without even really knowing or vetting him and the whole plan backfired. They couldn’t conceive of HRC becoming the kind of candidate she became by the June. She was the star all along, but they’d already put all their eggs in the Obama basket.

As far as power issues - the nominee appoints the head of the DNC (Obama quickly reappointed Howard Dean in June) Hillary would have tossed him out on his ass and he knows it. So for Dean it was life and death to squash her.

Pelosi resents any woman having more attention than her. She’s just petty and short sighted, she also may have some personal issue with HRC, but she will pay dearly in the end.

Donna - the architect of the plan - I almost feel sorry for her. I think she sincerely thought this would rejuvenate the party. But it became a runaway train that she no longer controlled.

That’s my theory!

Comment by Darryl | 2008-08-02 14:22:38

I think you are on it today. Great post.

Comment by Darryl | 2008-08-02 14:30:06

Thinking about your theory. I agree with it 100%, but the part about the young vote. I mean, eventually wouldn’t they run out of “new canidates” to fuel the young vote. I mean a “black” president is only cool now because of the popularity of hip hop. In 10 years, hip hop may be “old”. What then, are they gonna put up a teen bop queen?

It may be true, but its foolhearty. Maybe they are really that dumb. Eventually those “young voters” will grow up. After electing their first rock star and having to deal with the regret and broken promises, they will learn to NOT trust the democrats. They may, in effect, be creating new Republicans in the long term, not democrats.

“I will keep the moratorium in place and prevent oil companies from drilling off Florida’s coasts,” Obama said in Florida in June.

“If, in order to get that passed, we have to compromise in terms of a careful, well thought-out drilling strategy that was carefully circumscribed to avoid significant environmental damage - I don’t want to be so rigid that we can’t get something done,” the paper quoted Obama as saying.

Obama’s ‘positions’ if they can be called that, are like shifting sands. What I notice is that when Obama invariably changes his position, his statements become considerably more verbose - BO’s common method of attempting to conceal his prevarications.

NQ should start a Barack position change watch and post the latest flip-flop each Friday.

Comment by Darryl | 2008-08-02 14:32:45

Excellent Idea–maybe in the form of a time line or something that is flash enabled so you can scroll down the line of shit. Actually make the time line a bunch of bulls, then when you scroll over each position, it craps! That would be good.

Regardless of how many ACORN-ites Ofraudma deploys to Florida, or how much pandering he does with the Latino community, I cannot see him winning either there or in Ohio, two states Hillary won in the primaries and would win in the general.

If he loses those two states, there is almost no way that he can win the presidency. Forget about ‘opening up’ new states: He will be hard-pressed to retain states such as New Jersey.

Comment by Paul F. Villarreal | 2008-08-02 12:42:28

EDIT: ‘hard pressed to retain blue states’

Comment by imustprotest | 2008-08-02 13:07:12

I agree Paul, Ohio is the key.

Cuyahoga County is having some SERIOUS Democratic party issues. The FBI raided two major players — including the chairman of the county Democratic party last week for corruption. It is going to be a ripe opportunity for a republican to get votes in what is traditionally a heavily blue county. If the republicans handle it correctly they could really turn Ohio deep red … especially by capitalizing on Obama’s NAFTA snaffus … Howlie Dean is going to be bald by November.

Are they surprised, really? What a bunch of morons!! I’m sure they are thrilled by the off-shore drilling flipflop now as well.

They are sounding pathetic..begging for Obama to keep his word!
He has shown NOT to be a man of his word..that is the essence of what makes him not trustworthy AND THUS not electable

The Nation joins the list of of lefty activists
such as Moveon.org, Dailykos, Huffingtonpost,
Ameriblog, Air America (or is it “Anti-America”) Radio, and The American Prospect whom all
villified Hillary Clinton making her into
something she never was: a petty, opportunistic,
power hungry, politician. All of the horrible things
attributed to HRC are really what Mr. Obama is all about. The Nation can drop dead with the the rest of them.

I agree with Dawnelle Leona del Puma, I would love
to reach through my TV and rip Ms. VanDeheuval
a new one for the all the crap that she spewed against HRC.

The sweet, sweet irony! Bloggers like Kos could not stomach the thought of Hillary as president because they were so sick of “politics as usual”.

Unfortunately, dimwits like Kos don’t read real books. If they had any understanding of the history of democracy as a form of government they would realize that the way pols operate today is basically the way it has always been done. It isn’t the people IN government who are responsible for how maddening democracy can be…it is democracy it self.

But a system that relies on consensus is always going to have watered down versions of whatever legislation.

Kos and his ilk also have no sense of recent history, or they would know just how stupid they were to trash the Clinton presidency. They would have known that Hillary did not spend 8 years serving tea and cookies.

Markos, Josh Marshal, John Avarois, and the rest of the blogger boyz get what they deserve with this candidate. Obama does not give a good god damn about their progressive platform. What makes me scratch my head in wonder is where on earth they ever got the idea that he did!

Good luck with that messiah thing, Kos! Don’t forget to take your daily dose of kool-aid fellas, you are really gonna need it in the months ahead.

Comment by roseeriter | 2008-08-02 13:03:41

I agree with you about Kos- He too has an over inflated ego. I also think Pelosi, Dean and the DNC figured because we, the democrats were so angry at all the crimes that Bushco and his supporters committed that we all would blindly follow them for the take back the WH from the republican insanity.
What they did not figure on is many Dems, now independents and PUMA believe in PRINCIPLES, Truth and Honesty, votes count, and the rule of law, and seeing the blatant fraud of the DNC turned us off as two wrongs don’t make it right.

That they ‘threatened us, bullied us and then disenfranchised those of us who supported Hillary, mostly because she had proven herself to be the best democratic candidate, will only hurt those DEMS and idiots like Kos who think they know whats best for the party. They are wrong on so many levels. Walking Lock-step for anything is undemocratic, and especially wrong if the candidate is not qualified.

Country before Party Loyalty is what most Americans have been starving for, not just any democrat, if Obama is even a democrat. We’re sick and tired of being divided.

Comment by mimi | 2008-08-02 13:25:07

Well, they figured wrong.

I am angry at Bushco, but I’m not so angry I can’t see straight.

They also think that the electorate is stupid. Boy, are they in for a shockaroo.

They also have overestimated the Independents and these young people.

And they are leaders.

Barf!!!!

I will never forget how the Young Turks made
a joke out of everything Bill and Hillary did.
Worthless SOB’s that they are.
I remember when they had Jackie Mason on.
I do NOT like Mason, but he was on their show (via phone) for an interview. He had to hang up after 5 minutes because Cenk would not let him get a word in edgewise.
