Blog Shutdowns: Spam Attack from IPs Assigned to barackobama.com

The other day Sitemeter attacked Internet Explorer and shut down quite a few sites. Today, there is another report on Blog Shutdowns from Death By A 1000 Papercuts. Here is what they had to say:

At least one of the attacks in the latest wave of blog shutdowns this past week came from IPs assigned to barackobama.com.

This leaves us with an unanswered question. Who or what caused the “malfunction” in Sitemeter?

But then a number of liberal blogs and Instapundit claim there is no connection to the Obama canpaign and the latest wave of blog shutdowns. This is patently untrue in at least one case now.

More on that:

We came across this post by MacRanger at MacsMind [MacsMind Hacking UPDATE] yesterday, where Mac presents “one fact that can’t be explained away”.

On July 22-25 Macsmind was DOS’d (Denial of Service) that originated from three IP addresses that are assigned to Barack Obama’s website. This isn’t a theory but was confirmed via law enforcement through an inspection of the site logs from those dates. The IP address in question; 66.39.4.254 66.39.143.229 216.146.206.181, are all registered via “Go Daddy” under the name barackobama.com.

On those dates, beginning at At 5:48PM Central on the 22nd, the hosted server that contained our site was hit by a 1.6 gigabyte flood of illegitimate traffic. The attacks never abated and only stopped when our host provider took us off line.

Spam traffic originating from three IPs assigned to the barackobama.com would seem to be compelling evidence to the disinterested reader. We haven’t been able to reach MacRanger yet, but the real question isn’t “Is the Obama camp involved in this?”

It’s “Will this story be publicized?”

MacsMind finishes with

Speculation is one thing, but facts are another. This time however we’ve taken protective measures to prevent this from happening again. Additionally the investigation will continue and appropriate interstate authorities have been notified.

Here is a comment from a user of MacsMind and other sites like Atlas Shrugged. Here is what was said:

What the hell is going on? Is someone hacking a bunch of conservative bloggers?

We know this attack was on Sitemeter users. But the above instance from MacsMind can’t be explained away, so easily!

Texas Hill Country has this take on the attacks:

“Translation: People using computers at the Barack Obama Campaign are using them to systematically hack, attack and shut down websites that don’t agree with him. This is so messed up. It’s some Orewellian type business and it’s stuff like this that makes Obama scary as hell…”

I am no computer geek and new to blogging. As a matter of fact I hunt and peck to type….but I had to give pause to this case of blog shutdown. Since when do campaigns attempt to shutter free speech! Obama who has claimed to be a Constitutional Law Professor at the University of Chicago in the past, actually a “lecturer”, now appears to be trampling on that same Constitution in this case.

Shame on you Obama!

Someone explain to me how this “You are with us or we will silent you” attitude is any different from what we got from the Bush Administration for two years following 9/11. These people are deeply disturbed- not satisfied with calling anyone who opposes Obama Racist or Unenlightened or Sore Losers or Malcontents or Bitter Enders, they’ve now moved on to just trying to silence us altogether.

They’ve totally bought in to the idea that our votes are not our own- they “belong” to the Democratic Party, which to them means they belong to Barack Obama. We are not former Hillary supporters who must be convinced that Obama is the best candidate- we are POWs who must do as we are told or suffer the consequences. Having been banned from the bigger “Progressive” sites, we are now to be denied our own.

Shut Up. Conform. Vote for Obama. That’s their message. If this isn’t rank Fascism, what is?

It’s not different, John. The left left neo-lib fascists are a reflection of the very neo-cons they complained about for seven years. The threats. The quelling of dissent. The hatred. The generation of fear. The lies and coverups. The blind loyalty. The in-your-face arrogance. The whole package is a mirror image. They are lost in their own fascist irony.

Why do people persist in calling them leftists? The Obama camp is nowhere near the left. In fact, I’m beginning to think he’s a closet rightist.

Of course, the Obama supporters will repeat their old mantra. But it wasn’t Obama that personally did it. It was his campaign staff. Sounds like the Mafia, doesn’t it? The soldiers do the dirty work, while the Don’s hands stay clean.

Comment by BernieO | 2008-08-04 07:30:25

Is this related to the problems just the other day with Talkleft and some other sites that allow criticism of Obama? And someone please explain more clearly for those of us who are not well-versed in this topic. No jargon, please. Like what is Sitemeter?

Blogger.com has finally noticed that “some blogs” are being marked as spam. (”Some blogs” being pro-Clinton/anti-Obama, that is… although Blogger doesn’t say that. My blog was repeatedly marked as spam until I threatened to switch to TypePad or some other blog publishing system.)

Here’s the note (on Blogger Buzz at blogger.com):

Spam Fridays

August 1, 2008 — permalink
While we wish that every post on this blog could be about cool features or other Blogger news, sometimes we have to step in and admit a mistake.

We’ve noticed that a number of users have had their blogs mistakenly marked as spam, and wanted to sound off real quick to let you know that, despite it being Friday afternoon, we are working hard to sort this out. So to those folks who have received an email saying that your blog has been classified as spam and can’t post right now, we offer our sincere apologies for the trouble.

We hope to have this resolved shortly, and appreciate your patience as we work through the kinks.
— Brett

I wonder what the excuse will be, don’t you? I know that Blogger would never admit it f they found the same IP address (like barackobama.com) involved in this spam alert mess.

Heavy sigh.

There was a young bot troll here the other day basically threatening us ‘boomers’ that THEY created most of the internet and could shut us up very easily. There has also been several anti-Obama bloggers threatened that if we don’t vote for Obama there will be riots etc., This is as undemocratic as it gets. No Free Speech now from both sides.

I’m beginning to think that these threats are from a group of fanatics against America and basically are anarchists. There were many of those at the evil orange and may be just taking advantage of the political climate. Regardless Obama is just like Bush as are the extremists on either side.

NOBAMA!

So true. The obamatrons are just as dangerous to the well-being of our country as the neoconpoops who supported Smirky the Chimp and perhaps worse because they pull the race card better than the neoconpoops used the “liberal” card.

How many ways are there to describe just how screwed up we are with having a presence like 0bama on the political scene?

As disturbing as he and his campaign are, what about Dean? Pelosi? Reid? And the rest of the DNP leadership? These people have dug their heels in and are reveling in the fact that Hillary is not the nominee. They are ignoring us because they don’t believe our numbers are large enough to make a difference.

Furthermore, 0bama and the DNP have the help of the msm. And let’s face it, a lot of people who feel the way we do, simply aren’t on the Internet. They get their news from tv and newspapers. My sister who is just as anti-0bama as I am gets her info this way. The other day a local station did a story of a group of Clinton supporters who are organizing for McCain and because it was on tv, she finally believed what I had been telling her. It’s not that she thinks I’m lying, it’s that we have been programmed to believe that the msm is the gospel.

This is what the DNP is relying on. That the msm will push 0bama across the finish line and that people will either be bullied into submission and vote for him or they will as Brazile so brazenly dictated: STAY HOME!

From the start, 0bama has been using ‘gaslight‘ tactics. Everything they do is designed to make any reaction seem paranoid, delusional and beyond the pale.

A blog I used to frequent did an article that bemoaned 0bama’s fate of having to put up with the recent McCain ad attacks solely because he is black. There’s virtually no perspective from these people. They have selectively decided to ignore all that the Clintons put up with on the way to the WH. Or that 99% of 0bama’s media coverage has been positive.

As far as the hacking of anti-0bama sites, this is just the tip of the iceberg. They have probably already rigged the voting machines. Add to that all the voter intimidation that will go on Election Day by volunteers and we are in for the ugliest election. It’s going to make 2000 seem like nothing.

Also, I’m still not convinced that the Repubs are going to get behind McCain and even ’swiftboat’ this totalitarian creep. So chances are, we may never see the whitey tape. The Repubs may see this as their chance to reign for decades and may sacrifice this election to that aim.

America is in deep shit!

Comment by FerdBerfle | 2008-08-04 08:20:52

The Republicans will go after Oblahblah. I don’t believe we’ve seen anything, yet. McCain is too much of a real American to not respond to the Orwellian bs coming from Oblahblah and his minions from Obamaland.

Let’s see what the conventions have to offer. That will be when I either relax or start worrying.

mimi. I’m an independent conservative who had no intention on voting this year (Plus i live in Chicago.. so my electoral college vote is meaningless anyway)

Most Repubican-inclined voters I know were indicating the same thing. McCain was the last nominee any of us wanted.

However all has changed and even those of us in Illinois are determined to vote… against Obama.

You will not hear any of us say one enthusiastic word in favor of McCain.. You will hear much disappointment, anger and frustration directed towards him.. but we’ll be voting for him.

there sees to be a persistant vocal cry-baby contigent of conservatives who state they want Obama to win so that the Far Left Democrats can claim ownership of the consequences but i think those people are very shallow… and very few.

Google takes great pride in catering to China’s communist government, by providing censored internet to the people. They are practicing on us, in preparation for our new leader BO. Anti-BO sites are being shut down since around March this year - and since no one reports it on msm, the story does not exist, thus, no one is appauled except us out here in cyber-world. This is how it is done in facist world. Great Change, huh?

Comment by Robert | 2008-08-06 15:56:46

“Do no evil”? Yeah, right. Google seems to be doing a hell of a lot of evil with their censorship of blogs under its control, all based entirely on lies. Just further proof that the National Socialists we fought in WW II aren’t that much different from today’s socialists. Same attitudes, same tactics.

Comment by Katmoon | 2008-08-04 08:37:36

Pardon the length of this note, but I wanted to pass on the information regarding various criminal acts online lately. Hope it helps. I am sick and tired of the encouragement of these types of activities.

Under Federal statute a subgroup of Internet Fraud is Identity Theft as well as spamming; which are not held to only the common definition of each. Further under internet crimes against people are hate crimes-the main statute prosecutors charge with is a law enacted in the 1960’s civil rights movement, which makes it a crime to intimidate individuals into not exercising their federally protected rights (freedom of speech). It does not recognize as actionable those crimes against women or those based on the victim’s sexual orientation or disability. As with spam, state hate crime legislation is more comprehensive than federal legislation. Death threats are decided on whether the threat was true and imminent (therefore outside of the protection of the First Amendment).

Crimes Against Property-as related to computer use; are covered under the CFAA (Computer Fraud and Abuse Act 18 U.C.C. 1030) which treats computers crimes a Federal offences. This act made it unnecessary to amend individually nearly every federal law to include offenses committed with the use of computers. This act protects all computers connected to the Internet and all computer activities, whether they occur locally or nationally.

The Three Goals of the CFAA are
-ProtectConfidentiality of the data/communications
-Integrity of the data/communications
-Availability of the data/communications

Pursuant to these goals the CFAA prohibits using computers to commit any of the following seven crimes.

1. Knowingly commit espionage by accessing information without authorization or exceeding authorized Access.
2. Access other information without authorization or exceeding authorized access
3. Access any nonpublic government computer
4. Access any computer with intent to commit fraud
5. Knowingly or intentionally damage a computer
6. Knowingly traffic in passwords
7. Threaten to cause damage to a computer with the intent to extort money or other things of value.

These are the property crimes prosecuted by the CFAA:-Hacking-Cracking-Malware-Virus writing, Worm, Logic/E-mail bomb, Trojan Horse, Password Sniffer, Denial of Service Attacks, Data Manipulation, Web Spoofing, Web Site Defacements &
“IP Spoofing” is a technique used to gain unauthorized access to computers, whereby the intruder sends a message to a computer with an IP address indicating that the message is coming from a trusted port.

I would suggest contact ting your local Attorney General for your State, as well as filing a complaint with the CFAA.

The USA PATRIOT Act increased the scope and penalties of this act by:

1.raising the maximum penalty for violations to 10 years (from 5) for a first offense and 20 years (from 10) for a second offense;
2.ensuring that violators only need to intend to cause damage generally, not intend to cause damage or other specified harm over the $5,000 statutory damage threshold;
3.allowing aggregation of damages to different computers over a year to reach the $5,000 threshold;
4.enhancing punishment for violations involving any (not just $5,000) damage to a government computer involved in criminal justice or the military;
5.including damage to foreign computers involved in US interstate commerce;
6.including state law offenses as priors for sentencing; and
7.expanding the definition of loss to expressly include time spent investigating and responding (this is why it is important for damage assessment and for restoration)

When company data is stolen or maliciously destroyed, the modern cause of action is the federal Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA), 18 U.S.C. 1030, a criminal statute that expressly provides for a civil action for damages and injunctive relief for anyone “who suffers damage or loss by reason of a violation of” the statute. 18 U.S.C. 1030(g). The CFAA was intended to provide law enforcement and private litigants with updated tools to combat criminal activity directed at computers. Pacific Aerospace & Electronics Inc. v. Taylor, 295 F. Supp. 2d 1188, 1194-95 (E.D. Wash. 2003). Based on the CFAA, a company is empowered to file a federal suit to recover its stolen computer data, seek an injunction to prevent their use and dissemination, and recover damages for stolen and destroyed data.

I bet you that pretty much all of these hacking morons are either so full of themselves that they are convinced they won’t be caught, or have no fricking clue that there are harsh penalties for what they are doing. They probably think it’s the online equivalent of egging the principal’s house.

I have a nephew who thinks there’s no problem with his “sharing” music and downloading movies without paying for them, but threw a fit one day when someone copied something off his blog and used it on theirs without permission. Seriously, these idiots are amoral and clueless.

Comment by C.S. | 2008-08-04 09:01:07

The attacks have gotten more sophisticated now but the political dirty tricks are the same. Obama may not have actually said the words “Go shut them down” (or maybe he did; he’s a control freak) but Nixon didn’t actually break into the Watergate Hotel either. And Reagan wasn’t setting in a room with Iran working out the details of holding those American hostages until after the 1980 election either.

This shutting down negative websites is just more of the same kind of dirty politics that Republicans have been caught using in all their “successful” elections since Reagan; which makes one wonder what Obama really admires about Reagan.

And it’s too late for me; they can do a total media blackout but nothing except shutting down the polls will keep me from voting against Obama - and if they do that our problems have only just begun.

Realistically, WHO REALLY has time to blog during the work day (lest they all come at night?) and it’s always night somewhere but when I was NOT disabled I did NOT blog (or rarely)

so you have to figure most of these are out of work kids for Bambi or OLD retirees (mostly for HILLARY) or those that are allowed to blog at work

not to mention jail birds with computer time (mostly for Bambi)

Who or what caused the “malfunction” in Sitemeter? [...]

Does anyone know what’s happening with Savage Politics? Has he been shut down? Like Larry, Susan, and others, J. Cifre is an important voice.

I fear the is the shape of things to come if BO wins. The freedom of speech, the right to dissent will be gone in honor of Obama. Anytime anyone disagrees with him he’s going to say “You don’t like my funny name and the fact I don’t look like a President on the dollar bills.” Look at how he bullied Lieberman on the Senate floor. Watch Out Washington! Plus look at the way he can’t handle any criticism without pouting. Not a sign of a leader of a democracy. Especially in a democracy as diverse as ours. Brownshirts no. Since blue was the color of his 2004 senate campaign, Barack Blue they called it,and he tends to wear blue. The better term is blue shirts. Blue is the color representing the Dems and he stole that party. A party which has allowed itself to be trashed.

Thanks to Nancy A and No Quarter for keeping everyone aware of these dangers of our living as free Americans. I read the comment by Katmoon and am grateful for the information. My questions is: can those sites/owners that are identified by ips be prosecuted, and if so, the sooner the better.

There is nothing like the “good daddy” representation of approprate police power to keep people in line — or in jail.

Re Google. During the primary I had Google send me Obama and Hillary Clinton items for my research. Almost all I was getting on Hillary were negative — were they ever negative! — articles on her. I finally stopped the “service” and have had a very different opinion of Google as important to a free society from that point on. I think they need some “warnings.

I suggest everyone write to godaddy.com — let them know that you are aware that obama & gang have violated their terms of use agreement.

godaddy.com would have suspended and canceled OUR account if we had done this.

Let godaddy know that you will not do business with them and you will not recommend that friends and clients use their service.

BACK UP EVERYTHING. Put everything on a separate file outside of your computer, use disks, USB Keys, whatever….just make sure to always keep your info safe on your computer and off.

Uh, excuse me, but why the hell would anyone in the Obama camp launch a DOS attack from points of origin so easily traceable to barackobama.com?

Looking up the registration info of an IP address takes all of 30 seconds. Anybody can do it.

Registering under a false name with falsified ownership data takes more than 30 seconds, but doing that is equally easy. Nobody checks anything but whether or not your payment bounces.

If you wanted to conceal the source of an attack, that’s easy as well. There are all manner of anonymous and shady proxy services out there.

Comment by Ferdberfle | 2008-08-04 18:10:19

Because they’re bots?

Comment by ziggy | 2008-08-04 18:57:38

I’d guess republicans. They’ve probably still got boxes downstairs in the basement containing the 3 million uncounted 2004 ballots.

I hope someone is still reading and gathering all of us who were shut down. Please add us to the list…

What can we do about this? Isn’t this illegal?

Larry, where the hell have you been? Obama’s team and Google (huge supporter), have shut down accounts on youtube, scrubbed actual columns (no caches, plus no wayback machine to get them), blogs have been threatened by his lawyers, blogs have been shut down, not to count being harassed by his thugs through comments, etc.. Don’t get me started on the Illinois legislature record, law school and teaching record, donor pages and FEC.

If they think nothing of doing this now, what the heck will January be? Pravda and no free speech, that’s what. Since Google has such China practice in censorship, this was easy.

This guy is frigging dangerous… and a fascist.

This calls to mind the cyber-attacts Russia just used on Georgia before it invaded. Is this what the DNC wants to become: Stalinists?

While efforts should be made to thwart cyber-bullying, I’m just as concerned about cyber-censorship:

Federal Communications Commissioner Robert McDowell stated in Washington yesterday that a return to the “fairness doctrine,” being advocated by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, would mean the regulation of political content on the Internet.

I was born/raised on Chicago’s south-side. I am a multi-ethnic (black, white and puerto-rican) 39 year old woman. I currently live in Springfield, IL and I am a hand-me-down die-hard Democrat.

As a single parent of six sons (four adopted) and a survivor of breast cancer (January 2008) and a survivor of four heart attacks from 2005-2007 (+three angioplasty’s + one stent placement), for the sake of the futures of my children and my children’s children, I am HIGHLY disappointed and disheartened by the Obama campaign, for TOO many reasons to list in a comment box.

Obama spent a TOTAL of 300 days serving the IL Senate, and in that time, NOTHING new was brought to politics. Nothing new gave way to CHANGE for the betterment of the people of Illinois.

Michelle Obama has stated, “If you cannot keep your OWN house clean, you cannot keep the White House clean”.

The problems and issues Illinoisians faced during Obama’s term in the IL Senate REMAIN UNCHANGED today…from higher taxes, to $4.50 a gallon gas prices, $8.00 per 10 lb. bag of home-grown potato’s, homelessness, unemployment and EMPTY food banks, to name a few.

Yet, after Obama’s brief two-year term of duty in the IL Senate, Obama claims he is READY TO LEAD America in its entirety.

I disagree whole-heartedly with the under-handed dirty-politics of Barack Obama, from stealing ideas, policies and strategies, to political posturing, impaired judgments, comments, advertisements, and personal relationships (Rev. Wright, John Edwards, Ludacris and others) to DIVERSION TACTICS rooted in REVERSE RACISM (black on white racism).

How much of John Edwards’ posturing AGAINST Hillary Clinton during the Primaries shifted voters towards Barack Obama?

Obama DID NOT conduct a FAIR and honest campaign as promised.

As a black woman, I DO NOT CARE that Barack Obama has a funny name. Nor do I care that HE DOESN’T LOOK LIKE the ‘OTHER’ Presidents on American money.

I was OFFENDED by the big-smile Barack Obama displayed each time he uttered these words…three times in a single day.

What do either of these racial epithets have to do with the requirements of running a country, repairing deep-rooted wounds of oppression, or dissolving inequality and uplifting a failing, depressed Government? Absolutely NOTHING.

Is THIS the kind of rhetoric America has to worry about Barack Obama spewing in the faces of our allies? Our enemies? I shudder to think what actionable offenses will follow.

If the SOLE choices available November 4th are strictly between Obama and McCain, I WILL VOTE for MCCAIN in FULL PROTEST of supporting Barack Obama’s efforts to secure the Presidency.

How can Barack Obama claim to be able to lead the Nation, when he obviously does NOT make a ‘Presidential effort’ to GIVE respect to others, such as President Clinton, Hillary Clinton, the news media or to ANYONE who opposes his politics?

Obama has been unable to repair ANY of the damages HE ALONE has caused the Democratic Party, instead, Barack Obama insights DIVISION, based on deceit, greed and mis-placed race-based pride and aggression.

An American PRESIDENT is required to have the ability to HEAL damaged relationships, enact stablity, and create MEANINGFUL CHANGE in an upward direction of patriotic unification…An American President should NOT be the CAUSE of discord and separation.

I DO NOT believe Barack Obama received the majority of the popular vote, based on the evidences of VOTER FRAUD running rampant in Virginia, Washington, New Mexico, Louisianna, Alabama and Milwakee (and counting).

How much of the popular vote was actually FOR Hillary Clinton? The world may NEVER know.

There seems to be a REPEAT of Al Gore/George Bush happening with this election and I, as an American citizen, REFUSE to allow it to happen to MY VOTE, EVER again.

What (if anything) is the PENALTY for Barack Obama in such a WIDE-SPREAD voter fraud? Do our votes NOT COUNT for a SECOND TIME in RECENT history?

Obama fought AGAINST Hillary Clinton’s request for the Delegate votes in Michigan and Florida. Now, Obama wants them for himself. THAT’S DISHONEST.

If Hillary Clinton is DENIED the roll-call vote at the Democratic Convention in Denver, and if a roll-call vote does NOT elect Hillary Clinton as the Democratic Party Nominee, I WILL WRITE-IN Hillary Clinton for President on November 4th.

My voice WILL BE HEARD…my vote WILL COUNT.

Obama has PROVEN his own inability to make RIGHT choices, use dilligent judgments or impartial decisions aimed at CHANGE for the BETTERMENT of the people.

If Obama WERE READY to LEAD, he would RECOGNIZE that the BEST QUALIFIED person to become the Vice President, if not the President, is Hillary Clinton. For America, for unity, and for REAL CHANGE.

Obama has already CHANGED HIS MIND again and again… except when it comes to putting the MOST QUALIFIED WOMAN in the 21st Century’s HISTORY into office.

What does THAT tell you an Obama Presidency?
