Craig Della Penna on NancyA’s NASA Story
By NoQuarter on August 5, 2008 at 2:33 PM in Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, NASA
Craig Della Penna was impressed with NancyA’s August 3rd story, “That’s Not What I Said: Obama Flips On NASA.” He e-mailed me to remind me of his very first post here at NoQuarter, last December. (By the way, you can read all of Craig’s posts here.) Here is that first article, as relevant today as it was then:
An open letter to Senator Obama:
Dear Senator Obama:
I’m very upset by recent statements you have made about funding education by “postponing” elements of the space program. Let me tell you why this is a very ill-advised position.
1. It makes you look like an idiot.
If you do indeed postpone Orion by five years, you have effectively killed it. The project will lose its knowledgeable personnel, its production schedule will be canceled and there will then be no replacement for the 40 year old shuttle fleet. The Russians (and perhaps by then, the Chinese) will be the only nations with manned access to the ISS and to space.
2. It makes you look like an idiot.
The entire space program soaks up about 0.15 % of the federal budget, the DoD currently consumes about 31% of the federal budget (when you include the costs of our several wars). As president you could extract the entire NASA budget from the DoD budget and they wouldn’t even know it was gone, it’s a rounding error. In addition, the space program is the only government program in our nation’s history which can be shown to have paid for itself – in terms of fiscal and medical benefits derived from cutting edge technology which NASA either invented or sponsored.
3. It makes you look like an idiot.
Every self-serving, tub-thumping, ill-informed, moronic, blowhard political hack in the past fifty years has attacked NASA to herd the ‘proles’ to his side. By pandering to the Luddite, anti-intellectualism rampant in American society, they hope to send a message to the masses: “I’m one of you, I hate smart people too.” This is certainly not hopeful, nor audacious, it’s just old-time political quackery.
4. It makes you look like an idiot.
American education isn’t just about “readin’, writin’, and ‘rithmetic” so you can go out and make great gobs of money. There must be goals – great ones, dreams far larger than rolling up a nice, fat 401K. In order to meld us together as a nation, we need aspirations that demand greatness from us. Young people need to see that there is opportunity to actually accomplish their dreams and a purpose larger than earning a living.
Fools and madmen use our fear to conjure threats, precipitate useless wars and make cowards of us all. Do not be this kind of politician, we have more than enough already.
Leaders address the best that is in us, qualities we didn’t know we had and demand that we rise to meet those expectations because we can rise and we can create something new, beautiful and bold.
The space program represents those qualities of aspiration, expectation and accomplishment that we must embrace as a nation if we are to prosper and live long.
The choice you currently espouse leads, inevitably, downward, stifling creativity and handing the future to others. It is also intellectually lazy and can easily be shown to be massively counterproductive both economically and scientifically - and, it makes you look like an idiot.
You still have the chance to reverse yourself and reject the foolish counsel that proposes to cut off our future in order to make political points with fools.
It’s your choice as to what company you will keep – what will you do?
Cordially,

I am not taking up for Obama, I do not like him, won’t vote for him, but every president says they will cut nasa and then they get into office and all of sudden, they shut up. My belief is that Nasa knows something or has some important long term mission that only a very selected few are privy too. NO president will ever cut nasa funding, I promise.
I think it is because once they get into office someone way smarter than them explains to them the strategic value of NASA to this nations long term security and prosperity. NASA has been a boon to this country and will continue to be. We shouldn’t be taking funds away from NASA but adding to it. We need to work on cutting edge technologies, colonization of the moon and mars and maybe other planets or moons that are outside of this solar system. We need to be working on technologies to increase our food supply through growing food in space. The list goes on and on. And space isn’t the only important areas we can colonize. Our oceans represent 2/3rds of the planets surface and could theoretically house and sustain billions of new people. NASA is an important gateway to expanding our numbers in a sustainable and reasonable way while both protecting our environment and our wildlife.
You hope. The pink slips are already written.
IMHO, cost cutting should start with government entities like the FDA, where the paper pushers outnumber the investigators. Homeland Security is a joke, go to the website and you will find more links to goverment contracts than anything else. How about cutting funding for the privatization of government services, for which taxpayers pay grossly inflated prices as opposed to customary & reasonable charges? How about reducing the size of government in general, not just blaming it all on “entitlement spending”? How about DARPA (private companies), where scientists and engineers, raised on video games, dream up cool ideas, then spend millions of taxpayer dollars trying to make them work and find a reason to use them?
Federal entities are top heavy with highly paid chiefs and too few workers who actually roll up their sleeves and produce results.
Cut the fat from the top down, consolidate, streamline, and mandate competitive market prices for outsourcing.
this is another thing where Obama is not like JFK
He doesn’t JUST look like an idiot—He is the Websters poster boy for one!!
Craig’s letter is beautiful and spot on. When I first heard of Obama’s bizarre idea to cut NASA in order to fund education…well it just sounded like a weird Orwellian joke.
“He wants to cut jobs for engineers and scientists in order to put money into education so we can make more engineers and scientists…”
The “DUH” heard round the world.
Can I please use the “It makes you look like an idiot” line when I encounter obamabots on the street?
I’ll pay royalties.
Very well written.
As usual Backtrack Obama has all sides covered - supports, doesn’t support, and a nuanced centrist position.
Darryl, but McCain strongly supports NASA, and he didn’t say that he would cut it:
“Let us now embark upon this great journey into the stars to find whatever may await us.”
-John McCain
“John McCain is a strong supporter of NASA and the space program. He is proud to have sponsored legislation authorizing funding consistent with the President’s vision for the space program, which includes a return of astronauts to the Moon in preparation for a manned mission to Mars. He believes support for a continued US presence in space is of major importance to America’s future innovation and security. He has also been a staunch advocate for ensuring that NASA funding is accompanied by proper management and oversight to ensure that the taxpayers receive the maximum return on their investment. John McCain believes curiosity and a drive to explore have always been quintessential American traits. This has been most evident in the space program, for which he will continue his strong support.”

One big point for McCain’s team, as far as I am concerned.
Obama is not so much an idiot as a genius at having bad ideas.
I can’t stop laughing. Stop it. My side hurts.
I can’t stand listening to Obama talk anymore about anything. He’s a junk talker, rambling, doesn’t finish thoughts or statements unless he has a teleprompter or written speech in front of him. Much like Bush. Bush is the worse spontaneous speaker. Why so many idiots like to be in the limelight is curious at best.
don’t forget that a good percentage of the entire space shuttle program was black. The number off STT missions that were USAF or CIA in nature was fairly large. It wasn’t all Hubble and ISS related, NASA did a lot of Star Wars research and placed quite a few KH satellites in orbit.
OOOh. You be racist. You used the word ‘black.’ lol
cletus! buford!

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
(shared to me)
Working people frequently ask retired people what they do to make their days interesting. Well, for example, the other day I went downtown and into a shop.. I was only there for about 5 minutes and when I came out there was a cop writing out a parking ticket.
I said to him, ‘Come on, man, how about giving a retired person a break?’
He ignored me and continued writing the ticket. I called him a
‘Nazi.’ He glared at me and wrote another ticket for having worn tires. So I called him a ‘doughnut eating Gestapo.’ He finished the second ticket and put it on the windshield with the first. Then he wrote a third ticket. This went on for about 20 minutes.
The more I abused him the more tickets he wrote. Personally, I didn’t care. I came downtown on the bus, and the car that he was putting the tickets on had a bumper sticker that said
‘Obama in ‘08.’
I try to have a little fun each day now that I’m retired. It’s important to my health.
Whoever originally wrote this,
Thanks!
ROFLMAO!!! Zeke, good one.
