SUSA Florida Poll — McCain By Six

fl.gif

Florida Congressional Districts

Florida offers a rich prize of 27 electoral votes, 10% of the total required to win the Presidency. In 2004, George W. Bush won Florida by 52.1% to 47.2% margin over John Kerry.

Survey USA (SUSA) has a new poll out today that shows McCain enjoying a comfortable six point margin. That margin is slightly more than Bush’s five point win in 2004. Not a bad place to be.

In an election in critical swing-state Florida for President of the United States today, 08/04/2008, Republican John McCain defeats Democrat Barack Obama, 50% to 44%, according to this latest SurveyUSA poll pre-election poll conducted exclusively for WFLA-TV Tampa and WKRG-TV Pensacola. Obama leads by 9 points in Southeastern Florida, where he takes 52% of the vote; McCain takes 52% of the vote in Central Florida, 53% in Southwestern Florida, 55% in the northeastern Florida, and 59% in Northwestern Florida. Among voters younger than Barack Obama (47), Obama leads by 5 points. Among voters older than John McCain, who turns 72 at the end of the month, McCain leads by 13. Among voters in-between their ages, McCain leads by 14. Among white voters, McCain leads by 19 points. Among black voters, Obama leads by 68. Hispanics favor Obama by 60 points. McCain leads among both men and women, among both college grads and non-college grads, among both those who earn less than $50,000 a year and among those who earn more than $50,000 a year.

Most polls heretofore have shown Florida as in the “leaning Democratic” or “slightly Democratic” column so these new polling results are either an outlier or suggest a shift in the race. Coupled with other polls, both nationwide and in individual states, the trend seems to be the latter. There is a discernable if nascent shift in the race. It is now increasingly evident that in the past fortnight despite the “glory that was Baghad, the awe that was Berlin” that support for Obama has eroded. There was no bounce for Obama in the US. To be frank, his waffles have had more bounce.

As to why this is, I believe that McCain’s attacks mocking Obama have raised questions as to the character and substance of Obama and have for now painted Obama as an arrogant, holier-than-thou and out of touch elitist not to mention pitiful and laughable. Watching Morning Joe with Joe Scarborough this morning was illuminating. The first ten minutes of the show was spent watching and discussing McCain’s “The One” Internet-only ad. All the other cable news shows pretty much did the same. It’s not the ad per se, it is that they are largely only talking about the ad.

Whatever it cost the McCain to produce this ad, the dividends have been enormous. The ad is politically brillant on many levels. For starters, Obama’s messianic rhetoric is not likely to sit well with the average middle-of-road American. Young hip urbanites long on hope but short on the lessons of political realities may buy it. And certainly those uptown latte-sipping, fresh from the club with yoga mats under their arms with bottled European water in their fanny packs, headed to Whole Foods for a pound of arugula, and yet still looking for that ethereal redemption kind-of-liberals may buy it but will it play well in Kansas City or Penascola? Joe Scarborough, who was the Congressman from Penascola and thinks himself a “regular Joe”, thought the ad hit Obama “hard” and compared it to a boxing match where you open a cut above the eye with a jab and then keeping punching away. In short, it worked and it can’t hurt that they showed it over and over again. If this is a championship fight, round to McCain with Obama in the corner his aides trying to stop the bleeding. By no means a knockout, but a cut has been opened.

Obama’s own words are his own worst enemy and McCain, not to mention the RNC and the as yet unleashed 527 Political Actions Committees, are willing to do what Senator Clinton was not — mock Obama in commercials and day after day. Clinton mocked Obama here and there most memorably in Cincinnati and in Providence. But she fought largely on the issues and not on character. McCain is clearly going to attack both on issues and character.

But also remember that the ad is Internet-only but every cable news programme has devoted substantial air time to the ad. And this is not the first the Internet-only ad or clever response by McCain that has caused a stir. Obama’s energy solution of “let’s inflate our tires to save gas” was followed by McCain offering a tire gauge for a $20 contribution. In essence, the creativity of the McCain campaign has bought them invaluable air time on the cheap. For the week that Obama was abroad, the networks covered Obama 24/7 and all but ignored McCain. But I don’t think that speech in Berlin was much of a hit in the US. Other than the need to bring down more walls, I can’t even remember any of it. It wasn’t memorable but what was memorable was that Obama gave a campaign speech to 200,000 foreigners, acted as if he had already won and then skipped visiting the troops for a lack of cameras. That didn’t sell well back in the US of A.

The other thing that has hit Obama is the inconsistency in his message. Whereas in the primary, his base didn’t care about the flip-flops since many of them were virulently anti-Clinton no matter what; Obama now has to appeal to a wider constituency many of whom did not cast a vote in the primaries not to mention attempt to recapture a large portion of the Clinton base. Certainly, Obama has disappointed a portion of his base, witness the “Change We Can Believe In” letter the liberal magazine The Nation sent him asking him to be the progressive they believe him to be. It was authored and signed by 50 prominent progressives including one Obama bundler (Jodie Evans) and one Obama delegate (Norman Solomon, the noted author) not mention people like Gore Vidal, Howard Zinn and Phil Donahue. But moreover to the average John Q. Public, Obama’s reversals on the issues make John Kerry look like the rock of Gibraltar. Obama, at times, is as solid as quicksand. Wish that he were really quicksand, then this unfolding politcal tragedy would be over quicker. Instead, it seems like we are in for a slow painful demise. Every day brings yet another backtrack. One can get whiplash trying to follow Obama’s comings and mostly goings.

The part of the equation that is changing for Obama is the media coverage especially from the print media. With Obama now front and center and alone, his changes in positions have come under scrutiny. The off-shore oil drilling is a case in point. Obama, in his own mind at least, didn’t think that offering to compromise on the issue was a shift in his position. But the media did. And so the headlines blared “Obama in a Major Shift.” And that story line then gets put on the cable shows where his pundits are force to defend the indefensible and come off looking laughable. I must admit it was quite enjoyable to see Donna Brazile twist and give Wolf Blazer the evil look that only she can give when the CNN anchor asked brazenly about the about-face in the seating of the Florida and Michigan delegation. Brazile played the “it’s time to come together” unity card as best she could though she still stuck to her the “rulz are the rulz” mantra. She was clearly not amused.

But for most of the rest of us why Obama is shifting on these positions is clearer. His internal polling likely shows that disaffected Democrats are not rushing back, McCain has scored points on energy and on character and that independents who are just getting to know Obama are less than impressed.

Still remember nothing in political campaigns is static and with just over 90 days to go much can still happen. And Obama does have a $5 million ad buy upcoming during the Olympic fortnight. And let’s not forget Obama does have a base for whom the kool-aid flows like milk and honey and they are still chanting O-BA-MA, O-BA-MA waiting for the Red Sea to part so they can enter blue heaven.

Addendum: Mika Brzezinski, the co-anchor on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, admitted that she first thought that the McCain “The One” ad was a pro-Obama ad which only goes to show how so many are so beholden to the O-BA-MA craze and can only be described as out of touch. It boggles the mind that she earns six if not seven figures.

I hate Mika. Just because daddy likes Obama (for his job security), she follows along.

Comment by Clinton Fan | 2008-08-05 21:53:49

Her father wants a hot job in the Big O administration–he wants to play Obama’s version of Rumsfeld, a blast from the past (Carter era) who comes back anew, decades later….that worked out real well this last time, now, didn’t it?

One bite of the apple is enough, Ziggy. Stay the hell home.

Don’t waste your energy hating her, though. Just turn the tv off.

Well, it would bring back the wandering Dems if he picked Nancy.

Only PUMA dislike (and some hate) Nancy. Puma and Repugs.

MOST Dems I talk to that don’t follow this really like her and the fact she and the Congress are the only ones that have pushed anything even though the Senate has never followed through.

The people that didn’t watch the fraud of which Pelosi was not a part of (in public anyway)

AND I saw her on Jon Stewart and she was totally “in the middle” about BO or Hillary. So you have to be really following this to have Nancy hate!

I can see BHO kissing up to Nancy’s HUGE Ego too! She’s in Love.

I wonder how BAD she will get even when he scorns her and throws her under the bus with the rest of us at some point? She’s Italian you know. And Catholic. Her LICKS can sting I bet! ;-)

Well Charles, I thoroughly enjoyed those insights!

Obama now has to appeal to a wider constituency many of whom did not cast a vote in the primaries not to mention attempt to recapture a large portion of the Clinton base.

Aye, therein lies the rub!

As we were so unceremoniously told by CNN’s finest pundits (we are all spoiled for choice), the Clinton base is secondary. Once again spewing the mantra of Obama’s campaign, a la Donna B: We are unnecessary, it’s the new coalition, stupid!

We will evidently remain both secondary and unnecessary (the latter being the W.O.R M.) until it’s time to enter the voting booth in November. It’s a bloody shame it doesn’t exactly coincide with Guy Fawkes Day. That would be altogether fitting now wouldn’t it? At least I’d be able to light the bonfire of his vanity, grin, and get away with it.

Indeed, his followers remind me more of V for Vendetta than any of McCain’s people ever will.

Are they kidding? I guess they’re not counting George Soros’ billions and the major contributors from Wall St./Sub-prime mortgage industry, nuclear power and oil companies. Then they run down the list of supposed policies that Obama has trumpeted, and they were all borrowed from Hillary. What a bunch of sanctimonious hypocrites.

I just don’t see her as a joke. Nothing funny about her. She looks and sounds like corruption to me. The night on CNN when she began defining her new party and new map, I finally understood what had been nagging at my brain for months. It really is a “New Coalition” and they don’t call themselves Democrats anymore. They are “Progressives”. There is a lesson to be learned here. When the labels change, it’s because a change has already been internalized. I was angry when Naral:Pro Choice America became just NARAL and the board of directors was taken over by men. Then the policy changes come and it becomes unrecognizable. Why did NARAL jump into the water(koolaid) so quickly? They said “O” supported the cause, but what is the cause now. I looked up his voting record on SmartVote.org and he has been NV on every major issue involving Pro Choice issues since being elected to the Senate. He supported the Supreme Court decision to set aside the mental health of the mother as a consideration in third trimester abortions. Now the person who wants to be the Democratic Party’s (Progressive Party’s)nominee thinks telecom immunity and the Protect America Act is ok and doesn’t violate the Fourteenth Amendment Right to Privacy. Separation of Church/State with faith based initiatives is no problem for Progressives and they want to pray for me. Isn’t that sweet? Public Financing, designed to keep the election out of the hands of corporations and the well connected? Not a problem. This is not the Democratic Party I have known and loved for so many years.

Comment by VRWC - Replace Mika Dept. | 2008-08-05 21:04:31

Why not replace Mika Brzezinski with Paris Hilton? Turns out that Paris has a lot of sense. Considering that Paris already makes nine figures per year, no longer needs a dime of her inheritance, is running for President on the slogan maybe of “Funny or Die,” and gives McCain as good as she got, MSNBC would have to sell itself to her in order to hire her, but that would be for the best. Paris’s energy plan makes sense and the McCain campaign has essentially endorsed it.

The campaign has gone on for so long that, I guess, it shouldn’t be surprising that humor is breaking out. I’m a little surprised to see Obama’s campaign slow to get into the swing of it. And remember this Hillary classic? Remember seeing it and thinking, finally!? Maybe party unity kept her from oftener pursuing that line, but it felt right.

Maybe humor, as such, is not Obama’s friend. On the other hand, don’t count him out in that department yet.

Obama/Pelosi 2008? Now that’s not funny.

Obama and his followers have no sense of humor. They try to pass of mockery as a substitute. I miss Hillary and Bill. The White House is waiting for her. I can picture her behind the desk in the Oval Office at 6am the morning after being sworn in as president talking to the Joint Chiefs about Iraq, having meetings about Health Care with people who can make it happen. In my mind, I can see her comfortable there, working all day and solving problems, organized and focused. The DNC is trying to destroy my dreams and the dreams of 17,999,999 million others who are longing for the games to end and the work to begin, bringing real hope and change to everyone in this country. I can see her asking Bill to arrange a trip to the Middle East to talk to Israel and Palestine to charm and push them toward a solution to the real problems there. I don’t like being deprived of my dreams and have them replaced with a nightmare of incompetence and hubris. I will not vote for Obama. I own my vote and I decide where it goes. It’s always been a privilege and honor to walk into the polling station and vote for a Democrat. Sometimes, I have lingered a minute or so in my pride of the system that made me a part of Democracy. The times my candidate didn’t win, I could tell myself it wasn’t because of my apathy. I had done my homework on all the referendums and proposals, the down ticket, the amendments, prepared to make my decisions and happy with the choices I had made. I may not be able to walk out happy in Nov., but my principles will be intact and my conscience will be clean.

Comment by HARP | 2008-08-05 21:09:41

Big donors are the key to Obama’s record haul

But records show that a third of his record-breaking haul has come from donations of $1,000 or more - a total of $112 million, more than the total of contributions in that category taken in by either Senator John McCain, his Republican rival, or Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, his opponent in the Democratic primaries.

Behind those large donations is a phalanx of more than 500 Obama “bundlers,” fund-raisers who have each collected contributions totaling $50,000 or more. Many of the bundlers come from industries with critical interests in Washington. Nearly three dozen of the bundlers have raised more than $500,000, including more than a half-dozen who have passed the $1 million mark and one or two who have exceeded $2 million, according to interviews with fund-raisers.

Does anyone recall the graphic of the 2000 hurricanes that ripped through Florida? I do. Wish I could find it now. They ripped through most republican voting districts only. It was uncanny and we wanted to think of it as a godlike spurn. We thought so at the time. Now we might think differently. We are a bit older.

Bravo, Charles!!!!

Excellent article!!! Thank you for reporting what we here in FL have known all along.

Without Hillary, FL will be a RED STATE.

I just read, Andy Martin ContrariancommentaryBlogspot.com. and I agree with him totally. Hillary name has to be on the ballot. I feel insulted by her if she won’t sign the petition. She can’t ignore the 18 million people’s will and the hard work of her supporters who worked day and night to stand by her. If she will do that to us,I even can’t say for her political gain, she categorically will loose our respect for her. A real captain, will never abandon his ship. So, Hillary don’t ignore, those supporters who were fighting and stand behind you, when you needed the most.

Comment by jadwiga | 2008-08-05 22:30:26

Hillary will not turn down the nomination. She said that she will sign the petition for nomination. When asked, what if she gets the nomination, she said ‘it will not happen’.

redstate.com made a great observation today about Obama’s support of big oil and McCain not voting for tax breaks for the oil industry:

“. . .Obama himself voted for a 2005 energy bill backed by Bush that included billions in subsidies for oil and natural gas production, a measure Cheney played a major role in developing. McCain opposed the bill on grounds it included billions in unnecessary tax breaks for the oil industry.”

Comment by StrawberrybitesBarky | 2008-08-05 22:02:43

MSNBC had a headline that said something like Barky blames energy crisis on Cheney…I didn’t even bother with the article, I can’t stand looking at him anymore. If somebody does have enough fortitude to read it, you may want to e-mail it to No Quarter. Another weird flip flop for Barky.

A lady called into a talk show tonight and said Obama does NOT FLIP FLOP!

He outright LIES!!!!

Good point.

I still think he will pick Bayh if Bayh can deliver Indiana. Obama will not get Florida or Ohio. Obama must win both MI, & PA along with Indiana to squeak a victory. I was also being generous in giving Obama both Colorado and NM. But even if Obama looses Colorado, he still needs Indiana, MI and PA.

Comment by QUEENIE | 2008-08-06 01:05:13

I wouldn’t want to be Obama counting on PA…i don’t think he will carry PA..

I am on a resort Island for the summer and most of the tourists are from Pa and everyone i ask from Pa.. will you vote Obama and they say..hell no!

Comment by wodiej | 2008-08-06 04:56:24

Bayh will not deliver Indiana for Obama. I live in Indiana and Bayh is well liked but Indiana hasn’t went Democrat for President since hmmm, 1964, LBJ. They won’t go Democrat this year either.

The tone of this ad is exactly like the the opinion piece written and presented by a British commentator when Obama visited London.

Like that piece, it makes Obama seem so ridiculous that it’s devastating…

Why can’t Larry go on Hannity,or Oreilly, and talk about this Birth Certificate issue. He’s been on many radio appearances,But television,is where the people are at night……If he had enough evidence that the BC is a fake, why wait so long to be interviewed by the number one shows on Fox…People watch those programs.I’d love to see Fox break the story wide open.

Oreilly says his viewers will know who Barack Obama is by November,,,Now thats too late,to save Hillary..

Comment by pew | 2008-08-05 23:47:51

The guy on Hannity that said Nancy Pelosi,is Obama’s running mate,is Hugh Hewitt, from Radio talk show.

I’m wondering if this is what Hillary wants? Does Hillary want to become House Speaker if it is true about Pelosi??

Would that not give Clinton more Power than a VP?
Is this what’s going on behind closed doors??

Would Clinton,than have to approve,everything Obama does,if he’s elected?

Has this turned into a Repubican board in a mere six months? No wonder McCain “endorsed” Clinton.

Sadly the comments have taken a nose dive Larry. I don’t recognise a single contributor here, currently. Going on this thread the summary output is ‘innane drivel’, which is not suprising when a chipmunk is being endorsed. Has anyone noticed McCain appears to have been sucking on the helium bottle when he announces “we are winning the war [in Iraq]”.

As an old friend, I never judge a book by a single page. Maybe I picked a bad thread! Susan I hope your bones & joints are weathering the storm allowing you to present a sharp & vercitile argument for your cause with the vigor and enthusiasm of old.

Comment by Joe | 2008-08-06 02:46:12

If you think that it is a Republican board, then it is because of the level of simmering anger leveled against the presumptuous Democratic Party nominee and the party’s leadership by Democrats totally disillusioned and disgusted by a process that led to the selection of the least qualified candidate for POTUS.

Friends, just remember one thing:
B.O.W.L.* Big Time in November (2008)
HRC - 45th POTUS (2012)

*Barack Obama Will Lose

Comment by Thinker | 2008-08-06 07:28:11

Joe: you’re off the beaten track

Clinton is a Republican. The only thing that seperated her from Bush’s brown hole was the vague connection with that other Party [ermmm the Demo’s].

As much as I dislike Obama, nothing could have been worse than Clinton. Hell, I’d prefer that little weasel McCain!

The question is does Obama have the balls to be President, or when “push comes to shove” will Mrs C rule from the VP seat [or whereever she sits]?

As we can see my preminitions of Rudd being a “born again” are slowly coming to pass with the Papal visit to Oz & the appointment of a Federal Police Chief from hell. But we can’t have revolting peasants, so it will be very much business as usual all the World over, now we can take the piss out of China for daring to be an Olympic host.

Comment by Joe | 2008-08-06 10:25:48

You do too much thinking sitting on the john, since it’s obvious that your brain has popped out of your ass and got flushed down the toilet. Find some other suitable forum for your drivel, Clinton-hating troll.

McCain will win Florida, no question. North and central Florida is conservative, and S. Florida has an older population and plenty of cubans. And also, Florida Democrats remember how their votes were nullified in 2000 by Republicans and then in 2008 by the Democrats. If McCain wins Florida and holds Ohio, that’s the election right there and so much for Obama.

Comment by Park Slope Pubby | 2008-08-06 13:25:53

For what it’s worth, Florida has a significant Jewish population. As does NYC, where I live.

Every single Jewish man I know is voting for McCain. Jewish women? Different story. But if McCain takes a majority of Jewish men, and a significant minority of Jewish women, it will be a huge change from previous elections.

And yes, most of them would vote for Hillary if she were on the ballot.
