Hillary Is Back Roasting Bush and His Cronies

Yes, my favorite Presidential candidate, I mean, my favorite Senator from New York, is once again holding Bush’s feet to the fire. And she just turned up the flames…

Excerpted from Hillary Rodham Clinton’s editorial in today’s WSJ:

In the past few years, the number of corporations flocking to places like the Cayman Islands to evade U.S. taxes has exploded. One of these companies, former Halliburton subsidiary KBR, has used offshore tax havens to avoid paying hundreds of millions of dollars in federal taxes. To no one’s surprise, instead of cracking down on KBR, the Bush administration has rewarded the company in April of this year with a 10-year, $150 billion contract in Iraq.

There appears to be no crisis, tragedy or disaster immune from exploitation under the Bush administration. The examples of the waste, fraud and abuse are legion — from KBR performing shoddy electrical work in Iraq that has resulted in the electrocution of our military personnel according to Pentagon and Congressional investigators, to the firing of an Army official who dared to refuse a $1 billion payout for questionable charges to the same company. In another scam, the Pentagon awarded a $300 million contract to AEY, Inc., a company run by a 22-year-old who fulfilled an ammunition deal in Afghanistan by supplying rotting Chinese-made munitions to our allies.

But the fraud and waste are not limited to the war. In the weeks after Hurricane Katrina, for example, FEMA awarded a contract worth more than $500 million for trailers to serve as temporary housing. The contractor, Gulf Stream, collected all of its money even though they knew at the time that its trailers were contaminated with formaldehyde.

While touting fiscal responsibility, President Bush and his administration have lined the pockets of political cronies like Halliburton and Blackwater. While calling for earmark reform, the president has allowed no-bid and questionable contracting throughout the federal government to dwarf earmark spending by a 10-to-1 ratio.

If we’re going to get serious about putting our nation’s fiscal house in order, let’s talk about putting an end to billions in no-bid contract awards to unaccountable contractors. Let’s talk about the number of lucrative contracts and bonuses being paid for duties never performed, promises never fulfilled, and contracts falsely described as complete. And let’s talk about reforming the federal contracting system so that we can take on the real waste, fraud and abuse in our federal government.

I’ve proposed a comprehensive overhaul to root out corruption in no-bid contracts and other shady deals. Reforms must include the following:

- Instead of rewarding companies that exploit tax shelters and incorporate in tax havens, let’s ban the federal government from contracting with companies that hide profits offshore.

- We should put in place safeguards so that contracts are awarded to responsible companies that abide by the law and complete the work they’re hired to do.

- Let’s put a stop to the disgraceful practice of giving bonuses to contractors for work never performed, which has been allowed to happen in Iraq and throughout the federal government according to the GAO and inspectors general.

- We need to increase transparency and competition in the contracting system, and to stop the ideological privatization of critical governmental functions.

In 1941, as the U.S. mobilized and entered World War II, then Sen. Harry Truman proposed and chaired the Senate Special Committee to investigate the National Defense Program. … By some estimates, the “Truman Committee” saved the American people some $15 billion — more than $165 billion in today’s dollars.

Truman took on the war profiteers because he understood that when the lives of Americans hang in the balance, we cannot afford to misuse even a single dollar. In the Democratic Congress, we’ve proposed a new Truman Committee to address the waste, fraud and abuse in Iraq and Afghanistan that has already taken place, a proposal stymied by the president and his allies. And my proposal would prevent waste, fraud and abuse in future contracting.

Of course, we need far more than a Truman Committee. We need the Truman spirit in the White House, where the buck finally stops.

***

Ladies and gentlemen, here is another example of a work horse vs. a show horse.

So glad Hillary is on the job. Her words have bite. Better yet, her actions have merit.

She understands that some things cannot be delegated.

Has Obama said anything about this? Has he done anything? Aah, there’s a real question. Actually, he wants to keep Blackwater going, for one thing. For another, he has yet to have a meeting on the subcommittee he chairs to oversee Afghanistan. For a man who wants to end the war…?

Just in the last few weeks, Hillary has been front and center fighting for women’s rights, stopping Bush from cutting Medicare payments for seniors, vets and those with disabilities and now is once again taking Bush to task.

This is how Hillary occupies herself in advance of doing campaign stops for Barack who, by the way, is readying himself for another vacation this week.

So glad Senator Clinton understands that true leadership means working and taking on a difficult task - not just giving speeches, or aiming to win a popularity contest.

It is interesting that Senator Clinton always champions Harry Truman, generally regarded as one of our ten best Presidents. Harry Truman also championed the need for universal health care in his time. Like Truman, Senator Clinton understands where the buck stops.

I miss her.

If there is sense left in you Barack, step down. Superdelegates, if there is sense left in you, you know the difference now. Barack will lose!!! if Bush were to run against him, some people will still vote for Bush. And he is already carrying a lot of baggage. No other candidate has been questionable as he is. And the questions about him are really valid. The future of the country and the party lies in your hands - either you unmake them or make them better. Hillary is the one we have been waiting for, not that “emperor” who claims to wear new clothes. HE IS A FAKE! Pelosi, Kerry, Dean, and others now is the time to redeem yourselves or you go down in history as the one who destroyed the party and the country!

Comment by Faustina | 2008-08-06 22:27:10

Right on!

I wonder if these comments are only intended to roast Bush & Co. I get the impression from Obama’s campaign rhetoric that he just intends to shift the taxpayers’ booty from groups like Halliburton and Blackwater to his own favored groups.

I don’t see grants to faith-based groups as anything more than payoffs to friends and supporters. And I have read elsewhere that he will replace the housing bubble now plaguing apparently the entire world economic system with an infrastructure bubble by completely privatizing basic necessities like water, sanitation, transportation.

So what I hope Hillary is really saying between the lines in her loyal Democratic way is….Democrats, Obama, if you expect any campaigning from me, you’d better get with this program, or you can forget it.

About a year ago, I drove past the FEMA trailers at the Hope, AR airport. At that time there were 11,000 sitting there. I drove by last week and the number is at least double..It is an amazing show of Gov’t waste and corruption.

I was tempted to stop and take pictures..ten years ago I would have without a second thought..today, no way..thanks to the Bush Police State.

If anyone is driving on I-40 in that area, it’s only a few miles off of the Interstate..the site is a real eye opener.

Comment by SueB. | 2008-08-07 00:01:31

The trailers are stored at the Hope, AR airport. They’ve been there since 2005. Some finally got moved. And the Feds are paying rent on the land to store them there.

I absolutely love this article. It is so Hillary. Clear, concise and to the point. And it sounds like she is a fan of Naomi Klein’s as well! (”Disaster Capitalism”)

She really gets to the heart of the matter - the ideological privatization of government functions. We need to stop this now. When the Republicans say they want to drown government in the bathtub, they mean they want to replace government with private corporations.

They used to call that fascism. It’s now been Reaganified into a more friendly terminology…but we all know what they’re talking about. Government by Halliburton.

Comment by Ani | 2008-08-06 22:18:09

Precisely.

And Naomi Klein’s analysis in her book was spot on.

Comment by dezinegurrl | 2008-08-07 05:17:43

Maybe this is just wishful thinking but the last 2 lines of Hillary’s WSJ article sent a chill…..

Of course, we need far more than a Truman Committee. We need the Truman spirit in the White House, where the buck finally stops.

I think Hillary is working her way to seriously fighting for the nomination.

She certainly didn’t mean Obama as “…the Truman spirit in the White House, where the buck finally stops.”

In my mind those 2 sentences could ONLY describe Hillary. I think she meant it as a challenge to the nomination.

An update on the Obama Crew’s anti-Semitism.

I just got this comment on my last video (it’s still there and you can see it for yourself):

“AntiObama videos based on lies, rather than facts make excellent fly-paper. They “catch” fly-folks with inferiority complexes, narrow-minds,operatives, and “bad Jews” (not all Jewish people) disguised as ultra-patriots and sympathizers of Christianity and Israel.”

I also received an email at my YouTube calling me a ‘ki_e.’

Never mind that I’m Mexican-American and have no Jewish ethnicity.

The question is, what is the deal with the RAGING anti-Semitism and hatred of the Obama Crew? I heard that there are anti-Semitic slurs on his official site, as well.

What the heck is wrong with these people, and why isn’t the media reporting on this?

Comment by candymarl | 2008-08-06 22:40:16

Some in the Jewish community are skeptical. This is not allowed.

This is like the prayer for Hillary supporters to come to Obama’s side.

All who don’t support Obama are sinners. Therefore, their views can only be changed by appeals to God.

When the ’sinners’ repent of their evil ways and realize that Obama is THE ONE they will be cleansed of all their sins.

Oy.

Obama has attracted some of the nastiest, most vulgar riffraff around. I’ve never seen anything this bad in politics. Look at how they’ve treated their fellow dems/progressives on sites like fluffpo & dailykos. During the primary, some of Hillary’s campaign offices were vandalized, one had bullets put thru the door. They regularly threaten violence to anyone with a blog.

And as Paul brings out, the media could care less, and bho floats around, acting like he’s some kind of saint…the “symbol” of a better America. It’s insane.

If you think back to the good ol’ days in the beginning of the campaign, before it was all about racism, that’s exactly who Hillary was going after (and encouraging her fellow Democratic candidates to do the same) - Bush! That’s all she wanted this election to be about (remember - it seems like years ago).

It took a village of idiots to change the theme from “Get rid of Bush and his cronies” to “America is mean, racist, and bitter”.

I have actually resigned myself to the fact that Obama will be the nominee, and I am hoping and praying that his VP choice is anyone but Hillary.

Question - is there some rule about seniority that would prohibit her from becoming Senate Majority Leader? Harry Reid has disgraced himself so much over the past few years that he should be asked to step down. (Same with Princess Pelosi in the House.)If McCain is elected, I can really see good things coming from a McCain/Clinton bipartisan effort based on common sense and love of country. The thought of Reid and Pelosi in charge under an Obama presidency is absolutely frightening.

yes, that is the only way, and now! Bambi is going to HI and will undoubtedly “find” a new and better BC. we must bust him now on it before he gets back so the “new” one can be viewed with the proper skepticism

I love Hillary also, and she’s not even my President. I’ve always adored the Clinton’s though.

I truly believe Obama will do the right thing and drop out of the race. Lately,he’s been repeating Clinton’s plans, and some using the same wording.

Michigan and Florida delegates will be counted full, was asked by Obama, but it was on Hillary’s letterhead..I still say this is all for show. And Clinton will be the nominee.
I think this is what one of the surprises will be at the convention, and the other will probable be Bill Clinton will also speak..

I think we should have a contest,on what the couple of surprises at the convention will be.I just added mine..

Maybe thats why Clinton is not pushing for her name to be into nomination,is because,Obama will give her the nomination.imo

Go Hillary

it’s late and I can’t sleep

this living breathing soap opera mystery is like a HUGE COSMIC CHESS BOARD that I spend hours instead of sleeping thinking of all of the possibilities, etc.

the WEB has created the BEST place to go to confirm piece placement or relay a question to the never ending puzzle that is 2008.

sigh - too much caffeine too

It would take a real man to step aside, and BO is a mere stick figure, an empty suit, parading in his ‘as if’ world.

Nope, he tastes this power he seeks, and he believes he’ll be taking this the whole way to the White House. Where he will proceed to put his feet up and schedule vacations. He won’t be clearing brush; he’ll probably be banking slush. (For his own overseas account.)

I don’t think Obama will step aside. Why should he? He won fair and square. Hill probably has accomplished one thing though. She has probably made it impossible for any other woman to be VP.

“fair and square” in what universe?

You obviously have not been paying attention. Of course, paying attention, facts and fairness, reality and humanity do not exist in bambiworld.

You can say “he won fair and square” until you turn blue (and I hope you do - turn blue, that is) but it will never, ever make it true. And it will never, ever make you decent.

You and barky cheated and lied and committed innumerable inhuman and inhumane acts. And, ya know, karma’s a b*tch, bot. May it get you by the throat.

I thought thats why you are here Because he didn’t win it fair and square. What about Michigan and Florida,Texas caucauses, and other caucauses? You think it was fair??

Go away, this election was far from fair.

lately I’ve been wondering, especially about the birth certificate fiasco unnecessary imho if he had nothing to hide.

but the dual citizenship may also disqualify him for VP…

will he suddenly drop out claiming “medical” reasons?

??

Comment by Ani | 2008-08-06 23:51:18

I have been pondering whether a medical excuse is coming myself. A way to bow out while saving face.

Hillary got one thing wrong: the history of the FEMA trailers for Hurricane Katrina.

FEMA did not contract with Gulf Stream, a trailer company in Indiana. The $545 Million contract was given to Bechtel, and Bechtel contracted with Gulf Stream. How do I know? I volunteered for over a year on the Mississippi coast to do Katrina reconstruction.

Any information on the trailers was referred back to Bechtel representitives. Not Gulf Stream. On top of the $545 million for the trailers, Bechtel was being paid a huge amount to install the trailers. If you wanted to haul trailers to the set-up sites(and they were paying really good money to Bechtel to do that) you had to contract through Bechtel.

And where is Bechtel’s home offices? Why, San Francisco, home of Nancy Pelosi.

FEMA workers in Mississippi were going nuts. They would contact Bechtel, telling of the problems with the trailers and Bechtel would just blow them off. FEMA reps would contact Gulf Stream, only to be referred back to Bechtel. It was a vicious circle.

Yes, Bechtel should have
