Why I Turned PUMA

I’ve given a lot of thought to why I turned PUMA. On paper, I should be a loyal Democrat excited about this year’s “break-through” candidate.

But I’m not. I will not vote for Obama under any circumstances I can think of (well, OK, if Cheney became the Republican nominee, I’d go for Obama).

Given my history of voting for AA and Democratic candidates, this really doesn’t make sense, does it?

Hillary was never the perfect candidate. Luckily, I didn’t expect her to be. I expected she would sometimes disappoint me and take a position I disagreed with. Such is life, quite frankly. I was initially intrigued by Obama - a fresh face and a promise of change. But as the season wore on, I settled on Hillary. Why?

Read the rest ->

Hillary has a history of giving a damn. That’s rare enough in today’s Washington. More rare is someone who gives a damn and has been giving a damn for years. Any read of Hillary’s resume shows deep experience and any talk with her will show you this lady knows her stuff.

And.

As a woman, Hillary has long experience watching men in power. She knows the fault lines of that power and how it often misses the concerns of more than half the population - women and children. She “got it.” Even if I disagreed with her on an issue, I knew it wouldn’t be because Hillary didn’t understand what it is like to be a working woman, mother or someone condescended to on a regular basis.

That meant a lot. Policy might or might not change much under Hillary, but I had a sense that it would certainly be more nuanced to include everyone. What could be more revolutionary today? Really? It’s often the subtle change that has the biggest impact.

But the DNC selected inexperience with an attitude. Even worse, a candidate whose very reason to run was as a “break-through” candidate shows absolutely no “break-through” policies or attitudes. We got race-baiting and a stunning disregard for people of good will who might disagree. We got misogyny freely and subtly applied and applied with a trowel. We got the newbie / juvenile “face scratch” and campaign music with “message lyrics.”

We also got an example of a race-fueled scorched-earth policy and execution of the same. How else do you explain the utter destruction of the Clinton history of working for the AA community? Disagreement from time to time? Sure. But the label of racist? Uncalled for. That’s truly wanton destruction, without regard for truth, history or people. Completely amoral and without any justification.

The willingness to “nuke” the Clintons in this manner means no one is safe. No matter your intentions, history or work, the “safety” is off and you, too, can be forever labeled a racist or just dropped forever like former “friends” and “mentors.”

Nothing and no one matters - not even if you vote for this man or support him, not even if you are the grandmother who raised him.

My vote for Hillary was a vote for experience, a woman’s perspective, a “stick-to-it” philosophy of working the problem and sheer intelligence. Competence, a willingness to work hard and an attitude of “never give up” completed the package for me. After 8 years of Bush, what could possibly be more different?

But none of that matters now. All of my reasons to vote for someone got shoved under the label of racism at one time or another during this campaign. Experience was turned into “working for the man,” a woman’s perspective got turned into “she periodically lashes out,” “stick-to-it philosophy” got turned into “take her into a back room until only one comes out.” Competence got turned into “likable enough” and “bitch” in campaign music, a willingness to work hard and a “never give up” attitude got turned into ungraciousness and unwillingness to, for-god’s-sake step-the-hell-aside.

That’s not just an attack against a rival, that’s an attack against the very things I’m looking for in a candidate. The Democratic party isn’t even offering me “half a loaf.” Their scorched earth policy has crisped me up, and the completely naked power grab by the party and its number one man has been breathtaking to watch. McCain is by no means perfect, but he didn’t shoved me under the bus. I’m there, courtesy of the “democratic” party.

And half a loaf is still better than nothing.

Couldn’t have said it better. I have been called “racist” for not supporting Obama by a 40 year political pal, two 30 year friends and my own son-in-law (who is rethinking his comment). This is spite of my record of fighting for civil rights, a liberal (the healthy, thinking kind) record since I began voting and a one time ACLU board member.

It hurts but I have to believe if they educate themselves and get off the koolaide, they’ll come back to sanity. In the meantime, I go my way.

Thanks again for the post.

Annie,
I can empathy with your experiences. One long time friend stopped talking with me because I will not support Obama and several of my Democratic friends/associates are furious that I will not support Obama.

Like you, I have spent my adult life fighting for civil rights; I litigated and won based on discrimination issues; and I took on the radical right, including members of my family.

For these reasons alone, I will not support bigotry and hatred coming from the political left anymore than I did coming from the radical right.

You have to vote your conscious and keep your integrity in tack.

Loved your line about Kool-Aid, whose sweetness and color hide its inherent lack of substance. Hope everyone gets off it soon.

I agree with you and the original author about Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton. She is the only candidate I can support, as all but one of my Democrat friends/family also believe. The holdout believes we may inadvertantly cause Sen. John McCain to be elected and that we’d get no rectifying of the damage this administration has caused.

I am wondering if you know how legal it would be to write in Sen. Clinton’s name on the election ballot in November in all 50 states if Sen. Barack Obama’s suspect dual citizenship isn’t the issue we think it is.

And I wonder what the Almighty has in store for this country, given the sins meted out in America’s name over the last 8 yrs.

I have met both Clintons and Mr. Obama at rallies. I didn’t hear anything thrilling from Mr. Obama who deigned to speak off the cuff for a senatorial candidate for a few minutes sans teleprompter. On the other hand, both Clintons came so well-prepared to their speaking engagements that it was actually exhilirating. They also have a compassion about them that transcends their words.

And this is not easy to talk about in a blog but here goes.. When I took a series of photographs of Pres. Clinton with my digital camera and downloaded the photos to my computer and e-mailed them, friends called me excitedly. It seems that there is an angel in the photos right over the president.

If the media and die-hard Republicans don’t realize it, the Clintons are here to do good. And they are the most highly qualified couple in politics since Eleanor and Franklin Roosevelt.

Comment by CountryFirst | 2008-08-10 19:09:16

I whole-heartedly believe that to write in Hillary’s name will be a vote for Obama. The only real vote against Obama and the DNC corrupt policies will be to vote for John McCain; that’s why as a Hillary supporter I will be voting for John McCain come November. There’s some dirty stuff went on when the DNC constructed campaign policies/voting policies that allowed the selection of an inexperienced, but corrupt power hungry slick talking orator over the more experience candidate with a proven track record. They highly underestimate the intelligence of the American public.

Enough of this ‘next time’ talk women have been listening to for generations. Notice Obama talks about his girls and other peoples children. What now we have to wait a whole new generation for another female candidate?

Even that is insulting…that you hear over and over in the media about the next generation. What about this generation? What about now.

It is pure and simple the injustice of it all. I cry when I see what this country has passed up. It is so rare to have a candidate like Hillary available to us. Too many years pass between greatness and to not scoup it up and cherish the find is an abomination.

That video made me cry! When I really think about how the party threw out this wonderful woman with amazing Presidential qualities for this scam artist democratic diarrhea (running shit), I just cannot believe it for the life of me. A part of me wants to know exactly why this has happened and a part of me hopes that I never know because it must be so evil that it will make the GOP look like a bunch of saints! Look at Hillary in that video! Really look at her and you see a President ready to lead. Why, why, why was that not good enough? Why didn’t people see? Why can’t half of the dems see through Obama? It has been clear to me since January! I just don’t understand. I want Hillary Clinton and not in 2012. We may not survive as a country until then. Hillary Rodham Clinton 2008!

Democratic leaders, super delegates, pledged delegates, Obama supporters, you piss me off. This is not a game here! This is the United States of America and she has been in dire need of a real leader for almost 8 years now! What are you thinking???? Do you think???? The world is made better by the doers, not the talkers. Remember that when you want an Obama to act and you are lucky if he’ll get up off his chair to give you an empty speech. You own him, he is yours! He is not mine! If I do not get to vote for Hillary Rodham Clinton, I will be voting McCain because I, like Hillary, am an action person and I will own my President McCain and I will hold him accountable when he screws up and I will write letters, emails, and make phone calls and get my say about it and harrass my legislator to vote correctly on a bill. This is why I have to ensure that Obama does not get the job is because you lazy asses will not own your candidate or hold him accountable and that is absolutely unacceptable to me!

Hillary or McCain ‘08

This was a year we were going to elect Hillary to lead and follow through on words. What good is a $1000 dollar check from the oil company do me if they take it back two fold by raising prices to make up for the loss? What good does is do me speak and vote when they don’t care what I say? Instead a steady stream of emails from the 1, for more money…not gonna happen. He never barked when the sent ‘Machine Gun’ Sammy and ‘Corporate’ Roberts to the SCOTUS.

Hillary said no.

But Barky voted to…

…fund Bush the Idiot’s immoral and illegal occupation of Iraq…pretty much and exact duplicate of what Hitler did to Poland if anyone cares anymore except Bush put way more folks into their graves.

…strip you of the rule of law by supporting the Patriot Act, the FISA ‘compromise’ and basically rubber stamping every Bush action designed to make the nation into a dictatorship.

…ran a campaign that any banana republic dictatator would have recognised.

and all with the applause of the ‘corporatist’ press and the DNC ringing in his stupid looking ears.

Coincidence?

Not hardly folks. Load up on suppies: dried food, water and lots of ammo.

The worst is just around the corner for us if Barky sneaks in.

He gives every indication of being the sort of power mad freak that really would try and use the camps Bush already built.

I honestly think John Edwards was paid to run double team against Hillary from the start to assure she lost. Wonder how much money he was paid and or blackmailed by the sex scandal to play his part. Big daddy Dodd, Biden and even Richardson. What part did they play if Brazille and Dean planned this way before this election. The main thing that I can’t grasp is exactly when did Hillary, Bill and her supporters realize it was a done deal. Too many damn questions and not enough answers.

your right i think. is it just a “coincidence” that the sex scandal didn’t happen until edwards was out of the race and had endorsed obama?

it’s obvious that obama and his chicago thugs knew about the scandal in late 2006 and told edwards that he had to run or else they would release it to the media!

if it had been just hillary vs. obama, hillary would have cleaned up! if hillary had gotten edwards votes from iowa she would have won by a landslide!

obama forced edwards to run to steal votes from hillary!

why is the msm not reporting this? larry, you should do a report on how obama forced edwards to run or else he would reveal the sex scandal! the pro-obama media will never run a true piece like that because it makes they’re idol look bad!

I won’t vote for Obama, but must we pretend McCain won’t be a disaster? Of course he will-the modern GOP is beyond redemption. That’s why I oppose Obama-because I don’t want both of our major parties to be completely corrupted. I’ll suffer through four years of McCain if it will save the Democratic Party. But I won’t praise McCain or the GOP in the process.

Comment by Clinton Fan | 2008-08-10 06:45:39

He might not be so bad–after all, he was one of the Gang of 14 that prevented Senate anarchy.

And if he decides on a single term (hard to say, people like power, once they get it) he just might flip the bird to those arch conservatives and go his own way.

Lastly, there’s a Democratic majority in the Congress, I suspect that will only get bigger this election cycle–they’ll be the check/balance.

It will be better than Bush, certainly. McCain may have been an indifferent, indeed POOR Academy student, but he’s done some lifelong learning since then.

I’ve never voted for a Republican before. If I don’t chicken out and cast a Cynthia McKinney protest vote, this will be an interesting experience for me in my old age.

Comment by Irish1139 | 2008-08-10 12:44:17

I have never voted republican either and I am not sold on McCain but I keep remembering the fact that he wouldn’t leave his men when he was a POW. It takes courage and integrity to do something like that. I keep telling myself that a President is a lot different than being a Senator and some men rise to the occasion. I am hoping McCain is one of those men that rise to the occasion.

Comment by trixta | 2008-08-10 17:21:33

Comment by steven Mather | 2008-08-10 12:47:47

tdr and CF,

People should act according to their conscience. Demanding that non-Obama progressive Democrats vote McCain is little different than demanding they vote for Obama.

If one wants to send a message to the party, it is good to show them the direction they should go. Non-Obama progressives can do this by voting for a progressive. Even withholding one’s vote sends a message.

Defending freedom means defending the rights and responsibilities of others to vote for someone other than your choice.

NICE TRY! BUT A VOTE FOR ANYONE BUT MCCAIN IS A VOTE FOR GOAT-BAMA!

IF WE WANT TO TEACH THE DEM-CORRUPT-OCRATS A LESSON, WE MUST HOLD ARE NOSES AND VOTE FOR MCCAIN!

Comment by steven Mather | 2008-08-10 13:59:42

HF,

I disagree, though I understand why both Obama supporters and McCain supporters want people to think they must choose one or the other. If there are only two choices, then each vote has more punch:

If Democrats must choose between Obama or McCain than every vote = 2 points because +1 vote for McCain = -1 for Obama. If Democrats can choose candidates other than the two bad choices, then voting McKinney or Nader, e.g., or not voting = -1 Obama.

Even though voting progressive is not as election-potent as voting McCain, it does have many positive effects:

1) It weakens Obama because he loses support Democrats usually can count on. To argue that voting progressive means an Obama victory you must believe that Gore’s loss in 2000 had nothing to do with the Nader factor.

2) It shows the DNC that moving towards the center will cost them the support of progressives. One cannot discern a Republican vote for McCain from a nose-holding progressive vote for McCain.

3) It frees people to vote their conscience. It also allows them to avoid having to bear responsibility for the actions of the person that they were “forced” to vote for. Further, in time it will undermine attempts by two-party advocates to hold people hostage to the two-party system, which means people will be emboldened to live their constitutional freedoms.

Finally, to say people must choose between only two candidates who do not represent their views is no different than what was done in the USSR, where there was usually at least two choices on the ballot.

I’m sure I’ll also be called a racist for this, but I am terribly concerned that a radical group of Black Liberation Theology loons may be staging a coup of the party. Someone on this site (another post) directed us to the Real Democrats site, so I took a look. The posting was about Leah Daughtry, Howard Dean’s chief of staff, whom he’s put in charge of the convention. Turns out Daughtry is a Pentecostal minister who preaches Black Liberation Theology to her congregation. How many more of these white-hating, nut cases are there in positions of power within the party?

If you haven’t had a look at this piece yet, you really should.

YOU ARE NOT A RACIST AT ALL! I HAVE A FRIEND WHO IS A JANITOR IN CHICAGO FOR NOBAMA’S OFFICE AND HE SAYS HE EMPTIED THE TRASH ONE DAY AND THERE WAS A SECRET MEETING WITH ALL OF THESE GUYS WEARING BLACK LEATHER JACKETS WITH GIANT AFRO HAIRCUTS!

I DON’T KNOW IF YOU REMEMBER BUT THIS IS HOW THE BLACK PANTHER’S DRESS! WE CANNOT ALLOW OBAMA’S BLACK PANTHER’S ONTO THE CONVENTION FLOOR TO STOP HILLARY’S DELEGATES FROM VOTING FOR HER! WE NEED TO FIGHT BACK!

Guess it’s time to do another expose of these “preachers”/political activists. If this woman — and other scheduled speakers — are scrutinized and exposed before the convention they are sure to garner negative coverage, especially from Fox News. I’m sure the DNC won’t like that very much.

“I will not vote for Obama under any circumstances I can think of (well, OK, if Cheney became the Republican nominee, I’d go for Obama).”

Gosh, I hate to say this, but I’d even vote for Cheney to keep Obama out of office. Why? Because I know what I’m getting with Cheney. And most importantly - Cheney is not a CULT LEADER who appears to want to become king of the world. Cheney is just a scheming old school money guy trying to control the middle east - but I don’t think he’d try to put himself up as messiah of the planet. Cheney wouldn’t be running around giving speeches in Berlin and starting new hand salutes for himself. He’d lock himself up in his office and scheme while the country would go on.

Yep, I’d have to vote for Cheney. Scary that I’d even say that, but Obama scares me that much.

well i have to admit, that being a Puma for me gives me a sense of respect that , we matter and were not going to take the crap that these representatives of the Nation, do not do the will of the poeple , what ever happened to the senator our congressman, that had a conviction for the will of the people, to raise the pride of this nation, and its people for the better, and not so much about what everyone wants from us, being it money for wars, charities, and help. What about someone working for the American people, to help with the crisis we have in our own towns, and cities, for once we need the attention to be focused on our country and the welfare of her citizens. I do believe in giving but it is a time that we say to the members of the House and Congress, drill let the money help our citizens and help with our poor, lets do for ourselfves rather than others that despise us and dictate the price of oil to the exchanges on wallstreet. We as citizens must look for the best candidates to put into office that will have the pride and integrity that the poeple of this nation needs.,, so out with Pelosi, Dean, Brazile, Kerry, Kennedy, Waxman, lets start looking for those who have worked hard as a citizens and has always put the country first before himself, the people of US must come first, to have and wear the pride of we are a free nation, yes we have our faults, and are still learning , but we have the right to voice and vote those people who do not do their job for Democracy, get them out of office. The movement must stand for what is right we need to be the watchdogs of our nation of those who do not do right by the people, lets take our government back and honor those who fought so hard for us, to live as Free citizens, with laws that govern and protect us.Make America proud with the honor and the integrity that our men and women so fight for. NObama Puma proud, I own my vote.

Thank you Lisa.

Like so many others, it was the constant false allegations of racism that shocked me during the primaries. It infuriated me that BO supporting friends felt so self-righteously pious, and they felt entitled to yell racism at anyone voting Hillary. It was insanity.

I have a few less friends now, and I don’t care AT ALL. Certain people I never intend to talk to again.

I had dinner with one couple, and the stupid husband just spewed about racism and Hillary. As we left the restaurant I thought,”This is the last time we are EVER going to see each other, good riddance, OMG!”

But most of my dem friends were/are Hill supporters that just ended up loathing BO anyway. We’re all PUMA. CA.

Hillary was also not my first choice because I didn’t think that her personality would play well with the public and I knew the press would savage the Clintons and I didn’t want to go through that. Like Lisa B though as I continued to watch, I saw her as a much better and smarter candidate than I had anticipated and my affection grew. Obama was close to the bottom of my choices because of his short resume.

I too am appalled by the ugly nature of the ensuing primary with those blacks who supported Hillary pilloried by Obama supporters and even receiving death threats. Obama has turned out to be the most divisive candidate I have ever seen. As a white woman, who went to a primarily black high school, has had black friends, and have attended black churches (not like Wright’s however) I am truly saddened at this turn of events and feel that Obama has significdantly turned back race relations and I don’t know how long it will take to heal that breach.

Your readers follow with interest this thread,
For a certain party which abused and misled
Its supporters of old must the music now face
For bringing upon its country disgrace.
Certain votes, for that party, didn’t quite count
Save for the leaders to change the amount
Of delegates for the preferred candidate
Who weren’t on the original slate.

Because, for that party, voters don’t count
Bold insurrection must continue to mount
In Denver, lest the cabal holding sway
Be allowed to continue to carry the day.
That party may still Democracy preach,
Although its actions quite differently teach.
In the dregs of history, finally, must
Be placed the party which forfeited trust.

Excellent.

The Democrats played fast and loose with my vote.
That is not their right.
That is no ones right.
They can kiss my ass.

You’ve done a fine job articulating what I and many others are feeling.

Of course, it’s way too easy for the Obamanuts to simply shriek “RACIST!!!” at us, and prance away feeling smug and staying stupid.

Thanks for that essay–it should be published on the op-ed pages of major newspapers, because it really does strike a chord.

I have voted for the following
Mondale
Dukakis
President Clinton - Twice
Gore
Kerry

I will cast my first ever vote for a Republican this November.

It’s not color, it’s character (or lack thereof), experience (ditto) and judgement (ditto, ditto).
Gerry Ferraro was right. If BHO were a white man or white woman, he would have been laughed out of the primaries.
Oprah would have ignored him or her, and not annointed him as the chosen one.
Dean and Brazile would have said “Who?”
The MSM would have ignored him or her.
Senator Clinton would have the nomination, and a chance to save this country from itself.
I’ve lost more than a few friends over this, as I will not compromise. There are few things more important. Remember Carter? He was the different candidate, and many voted for him because of a toothy grin and that he seemed different than the DC insiders. That worked out well, if you long for the days of double digit inflation, hostages, and the malaise of a failed and impotent administration. Hell, Ted Kennedy ran against him in 1980 and took it to the floor of the convention. He almost won. Reagan was the result. I went into the service during his first term. War with the USSR or in some South American (Nicaragua, El Salvadore?) seemed a distinct possibility at times. Reagan did bring down the USSR by bankrupting them, and nearly us.
Then there was Bush and war for Oil.
Bill Clinton, despite the constant menace of the right wing, oversaw prosperity, fiscal responsibility and a stronger, better America.
Then there was W, and that’s been a disaster.

So, BHO will roll into Denver, Dean and Brazile kissing his ass the entire way.

I’m voting for McCain. And my hope is that he wins.
Big.
And from the wreckage of the Democratic Party an new one arises.
A centrist, progressive party, committed to real social justice which is derived from real economic opportunity, not handouts. One that is committed to peace, and justice.
Not one controlled by nutcases.

No surrender.

Thanks, Kevin!

I read your post and agreed with everything. It’s a shame that we’re facing the prospect of McCain v Obama. No real choice…but at least….:

“Sen. Hillary Clinton will make, I am sure, a great president” — Sen. John McCain in 2005 to Tim Russert, Meet the Press, in Baghdad with Hillary.

At least this shows RESPECT FOR HILLARY! By a most unexpected source….McCain!

I completely agree with all comments.

Hillary Clinton turned out to be a real star.
The treachery used by the party and the Obama campaign
is unforgivable.
They can all go to hell.

I recognize it when I see it from the other side!

Thanks, LisaB - what an outstanding piece. And the video moved me to tears. GODDESS, I miss this woman! If she was to be president, I could actually watch presidential speeches again! I’d tune in for the SOTU speeches! I’d watch the press conferences! But if it’s Obama or McCain? That’ll be me changing the channel!!

Well done!

Lisa B

THANK you for a great insightful post that tells it like it is! the “face scratch” that Obama performed on stage like JayZ rapper infuriated me and millions of other women!

How dare this juvenile prankster show us his spitefulness against the woman who beat him the night before at the pathetic ABC debate, ‘flip-off’ her this immature way in front of millions.

“Obama Gives Hillary the Finger” is the Youtube mega hit. And this jerk is the misogynist star of it. And he wants to be President? And when in Kenya last year he donated thousands to his islamist Sharia Law cousin Odinga to imprison women and to harbor terorists.

Real Paula Abeles’ “Odinga-Obama Kissing Cousins” Only now the press is reporting the Truth about Obama being called “a neophyte Senator with a few days experience meddling in our country’s affairs!” BBC. KIkuyu presiden tof Kenya complained about Obama’s interefence. Great Judgmnet in Foreign Affairs.

Gimme a break!

I’am don’t care how many friends I loose, but I’am gaining real friends… We do need to force these people out of office. We have alot to do within the U.S. Let’s not forget 9-11 and the terrorist. I really got scared when I heard Obama say he was muslem .. oh, by accident. I used to live on Long Island and it still hurts just thinking 9-11. I will say one thing in favor of Bush he did not let N.Y. down when he said he would go after them. He has never faultered no matter what Palosi, Kennedy (big mouth Woman… Killer), Kerry, Harry and the rest of them say. That is something they did keep their promise on. I have learned how to spot them. The Obama crowd they don’t care about us being safe. And do you really think that Kennedy cares about women. Which Kennedy raped that girl down here in Fl. and ofcourse, got away wi
