How Obama Treats Labor [Monday Update]

This is from “LaborPains.org.” Mon AM Update: I am told by a reliable source that the AFL-CIO fully expected Obama to appear in person. The AFL-CIO has never been treated this way, ever, by a presidential candidate. Now back to the original blog post:

The title tells the story:

Stood Up and Hung Up

Then blogger J. Justin Wilson reveals the depressing details:

I just got off the AFL-CIO’s kick-off conference call with Obama. What a tragedy of errors.

First of all, Sen. Obama was about 40 minutes late to the show. You can image how fantastic 40 minutes of Muzak went over. Finally, John Sweeney introduced Obama.

Next …

After rattling off nearly the exact same speech he delivered a few months ago to the AFL-CIO (see above [video]), Obama proceeded to hang up. Click. Just like that.

Someone at the AFL-CIO muttered something like “is that it?” and then we went back to hold music.

A lady came back on and made an excuse, saying Obama’s line was cut off and that he would come back on the call. Minutes pass, and then she came back on and said that Obama had left the building. …

Go to “Stood Up and Hung Up” to view a video and to listen to the actual phone call.

Oh well. I completely understand.

It is such an annoyance to have to talk to those “typical” little people.

:::::

P.S. Originally I described the blog as “pro-labor.” That is not entirely true. However, the facts of the event — backed up with an AUDIO — remain true.

Now you know. It’s you. You’re a whiner and you’re to blame. The disease in the economy is not in your wallet, your pension, your job, your mortgage — it’s in your head. Phil Gramm says so and he should know.

He’s tried to help you with the free market and in these boom times you give him skepticism. Gramm is the economic wizard to the self-professed economically-challenged Republican candidate. Gramm was the most instrumental senator in the Republican de-regulation spasm under Reagan and Bush. That gave us a financial sector free of almost any restraint — followed by frauds, bank failures and bailouts (and you whine at having to pay billions when the wheels fall off the free market). This gave us a deregulated energy sector leading directly to the Enron crimes, speculative excesses, and the ruination of countless thousands of Americans now suffering in their heads — and at the pump.

Yes, Gramm tried to help you, turning loose the economic barracuda to save us with the free market. And here we are free at last — free of jobs (they wave any flag guaranteeing near slave labor), free of gas (stagnant wages won’t pay for it), free of a sound currency, free of principled conduct in finance and government, free of almost everything except foreclosure, war, debt and inflation. So it’s good to know it’s just in our heads.

Republicans should have been too ashamed to even run a candidate this year, but they have and it’s economic illiterate John McCain, advised by economic vandal Phil Gramm. If your head clears, vote against them because if they stand for capitalism it’s time to find something — anything — else.

Barry only cares about Barry, not petty labor organizations.

This is off-topic, but I know people will get a kick out of it.

Larry Johnson’s piece from last night has them atwitter over at Daily Kook, AKA The Site That Will Kick You Off If You Make A Truthful Diary About John Edwards:

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/8/10/212240/798

One of the people there, a front-pager by the name of Meteor Blades, is creating all kinds of scenarios with Larry that involve intrigue and espionage. Here’s a choice quote. The “He” in question is Larry Johnson:

“How do you know he’s crazy. How do you ……know his agenda doesn’t require him to appear crazy? It’s a house of mirrors.”

If you want some good laughs and to see Bots in Panic, check it out. I’m only about a third of the way through the comments but wanted to give others the chance to laugh with me.

Ha ha ha.

Nice work on the Batchelor show, Larry. And Susan, you were right — John Batchelor is excellent. I will be looking for that show more often in the future after listening to LJ’s segment and the one after his.

Comment by Clinton Fan | 2008-08-11 06:01:00

Wow, what a bunch of angry and flailing jerks. All they can do is hurl insults and snark. They repeatedly indicate that they have disdain for Larry, they toss personal insults at him, but they never back up their arguments against his assertions with any of those pesky facts.

“You’re an ugly asshole, so there!” is not a rebuttal. At least not in the adult world…

Comment by C.S. | 2008-08-11 06:35:44

Can’t expect adult behavior from playground bullies. Obama’s disciples and most of our elected officials all need detention or at least a long Time Out. January 21, 2009 sounds about right.

He thinks that he will win because the alternative is voting for McCain, and nobody would do that. He is in for a rather rude surprise inNovember (if he lasts that long).

Comment by Ani | 2008-08-10 23:02:56

Exactly so. His arrogance is beyond the pale.

This is exactly the same attitude that Phil Griffin, Pres. of MSNBC had when we were complaining about the disgusting migogyny of Keith Olbermann — he said in so many words:

‘yeah we know he’s a jerk, but where else are you gonna go?

Judging by MSNBC’srappy ratings, they must be getting a good answer to that question.

I think Obama will receive a similar answer in November.

Comment by Obama is a bum | 2008-08-11 00:47:05

Obama already won the gold medal for arrogance, all others vie for a silver.

Obama and Olbermann are two big zeros.

Comment by C.S. | 2008-08-11 06:56:25

He thinks he can win, like Bush thought he could win; because he’s being told he has won.

An arrogant Bush was so thoroughly annoyed that he didn’t win that he and his group took it all the way to the Supreme Court to prevent a Florida recount.

IF Obama doesn’t win, see how fast the cry of discrimination fills the air and watch those torts (probably citing the 1965 Civil Rights Act) sail to the Supreme Court once again.

And don’t forget that old blackmail threat of violence if he doesn’t “win”. So many of our politicians are so afraid of rioting by the Obama loyal that they “fear our freedoms” more than losing our freedom.

Comment by Ferdberfle | 2008-08-11 07:01:47

Let them riot. If this is how they think they can win friends and influence people, let them have at it.

Comment by roseeriter | 2008-08-11 07:04:34

This whole primary has been a riot in one way or another. Let them ‘crash the gates’ and see how far they’ll get. Sometimes it takes a riot of some kind to wake people up no matter what the riot is for.

Comment by Ferdberfle | 2008-08-11 07:12:45

Agreed. The art of persuasion does not include threats of violence. The sooner they learn that, the better.

Comment by Pam | 2008-08-11 07:38:25

Yeah. Let them riot. It won’t last long. Maybe a week or so. I won’t buckle for a threat of a riot when my country is at stake. I’m fighting for my freedom & my most fundamental right of all, my own vote, right here at home!!

ARE YOU READY TO RUMBLE!!!!

YEA!!!

Comment by Ferdberfle | 2008-08-11 07:48:45

And a fitting punishment for the instigators would be to clean up the mess as part of a chain gang. And as an added bonus, the taxpayers could provide them pink uniforms that they could keep once they finished the job.

Comment by Chiten | 2008-08-11 13:14:54

The only people left in “Obama’s base” are gangster rappers, black prison inmates and black liberation theologists who like to riot and loot. The people in society most likely to cause violence and harm to others are his base, that’s why people are afraid, as well they should be.
The actual number is very small, the probablility of damage, injury and even death is very high. We’re going to need the National Guard called out in major cities in case the Obama numbers upset his “base”.

Any self-respecting black or white person is firmly against Obama. The only ones still supporting him are those listed above along with the very young and very foolish. He has zero chance of winning in the general election. His handlers know this, and they’re looking for an exit strategy.
Mark my words, Grandma is going to play a large part in the exit strategy (or whoever plays grandma on TV). I’m seriously hoping he wouldn’t sacrifice the life of his own grandmother, but there is no doubt in my mind that he would have the “death” faked as a reason to withdraw from the race.
Watch the media closely, they’re about to pull a fast one on us again.

Comment by Cathy6224 | 2008-08-11 08:46:19

Comment by Joseyj | 2008-08-11 08:54:18

McCain made a boo-boo by airing an Olympic ad that bashed Obama - rather than an ad promoting McCain.
Sometimes I think the Repubs WANT Obama to win….it would certainly do wonders for the Repub Party damaged by Bush.

Fox news had a clip of him ordering “a stack of pancakes to go” and speculated he wouldn’t eat them and they would end up in the trash on his bus… or maybe under his bus. They are already FLAT, there’s room under the bus for pancakes.

but seriously, as for unions, Houston we have a problem.

I am an AFSCME member, and our jaws are still open in shock over the way he treated our candidate, Hillary.
Getting behind him is something the bosses urge, but the rank and file aren’t buying it. We saw him in action all across the country and we’re not pleased. Our union is spending pac money on him through Moveon, and it is advertised as such, but he pretends he isn’t tainted with our pac money. If there was a way to stop them from taking my pac donations from my paychecks I would do it. Part of my paycheck goes to his advertising, and then he denies it. Sickening.

The teamster bosses cut a deal with him to stop oversight, which infuriated the rank and file since that opens the door to them being screwed.

SEIU had problems with their members even before they endorsed him. Since then their union bosses have shown themselves to be aligned with ob. Thugs are supporting the presumed thug in cheif. The rank and file are well aware of their bosses and there have been top news stories of corruption at the top.

Ob is NOT pro-rank and file, although he is all for the cash and power a union endorsement brings.

Let the union workers eat pancakes, skinny ol ob says.

Comment by matilda | 2008-08-11 12:48:36

To stop having money deducted from your paycheck to fund non administrative activities by the Union (i.e. PACs or other political programs) you may request becoming a “core” member of the Union. Under that category, you would only have to pay that portion of your dues that supports the Union’s administration costs. Speak with your union about how to go about becoming a “core” member or call your local NLRB (National Labor Relations Board) office for further information on your rights.

You do realize that the heavier the package you send, the more they pay in postage? Some ideas include bricks, lead washers in the envelope, junk appliances, anything that weighs a lot and has little or no value is ideal for the job.
You end up costing them money instead of providing them with money because they pay the postage.
Next letter you get, pick up whatever you want that weighs as much as possible, tape the postage paid envelope to it and drop it at the post office. I’m sure BO will appreciate your contribution and they’ll cut you off the mailing list asap! (then you go to the site and sign back up LMAO).
If enough of us do this, it should bail out the United States Postal Service to the point they won’t have to raise the price of stamps again for another year.
This concept is FULL of advantages!

Comment by stateofdisbelief | 2008-08-11 20:24:06

94% of AA are voting as a block for BHO..it is unfortunate the vote is color based and not based on the issues that actually affect all of us. I am tired of the focus of our funds in healthcare going to emergency rooms paying for people who shoot or stab themselves in gang violence. I am tired of paying for young women to have more and more illegitimate babies for a larger stipend from welfare so they can continue to buy drugs. I am tired of paying for education issues caused because our classrooms are overcrowded with hundreds and hundreds of children with no fathers. How do they eat? We pay for their education and their meals. Why?..ask Barak Obama. He refused to help the Jenna 6. He’ll tell you-he abandoned all those AA’s the minute he could and they very stupidly follow him like he actually cares…sad.

I got on the other day. Wrote my own response to all the points the letter was trying to make. Tore the donation card up and put the pieces with the letter back into the postage paid envelope. Makes me feel so good.

Also, got a fundraising call from the DLCC today. When I told them I was now an Independent and had made the change back when the DNC made a debacle of the FL and MI situation…the gal said, “Well, that wasn’t our fault…you know that don’t you?” I tried to say something, but she said, “They broke the rules…”

Talk about P.O.’d My blood pressure shot out the roof and I told her, “Well, you just pissed me off worse. Good bye!”

Sounded to me as though this wasn’t the first time she’d heard this response.

I deal with all political parties in my profession. The rudest comments are now coming from those associated with (and working for) the Democratic Party. As a lifelong Democratic, I've noticed over the years an increased disregard by the Democratic Party workers and leadership of its constituents.

The Democratic Party has forgotten that there is still competition in this country, even for political parties.

I am happy to do my part to annoy Obama supporters, and I always feel happier afterwards - you know, if you’re “feeling a little down” or something, it’s a great, no cost (except to Obama) cure.

Be sure to send the reply envelope back WITHOUT POSTAGE and with your thoughts enclosed. I wish I had some Monopoly money to send, that is funny. That way the DEMS have a better idea of what REAL DEMS are thinking.

remember, the maximum donation from an individual is $2300, so you’ll need to send 4 $500s and 3 $100s of the monopoly money.
Of course, if you want it to weigh more, send as many small denominations as possible!!
I like the miniature money you get at wal-mart or the dollar store too. It looks like actual money but much smaller (or larger) and with markings to ensure that it’s “play money”. But you could probably fool of few of them….
If you have a color printer, print out a bunch of the $3 obamabills in green and send those.
Don’t use xerox images of actual money, it could be considered counterfitting and get you in trouble if you have a return address on the envelope. (was my idea, but my very intelligent wife stopped me with the realization…what would I do without that woman? …oh yeah, I’d marry Uppity!!! LOL)

Sadly you are probably right. Everyone keeps saying they can’t believe so many support oloser and they can’t believe the poles. Well I really do not believe the American people will vote this guy into office. If he wins I think it is a total FIX. There is no way. This country just isn’t there. Not yet! And not for some time still. Way to much stuff on him. And even though our lovely media refuses to report fair and unbiased news people are getting the messages about who this character really is.
God Bless America. Land that I love….

They call that a dictator when you don’t need the People’s vote and “win” without it.

That’s about how I’d treat them, but they aren’t exactly on the same side of the aisle with me. For Obama that’s just dumb. Still, I get a little bit of satisfaction from it.

Imagine if presidential elections were voted the way the union wants to vote on organization. Isn’t that the exact issue with the ridiculous caucuses this year? Intimidation, groupthink, and no privacy– thanks unions!
